Android Beta Program - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Someone posted on Lenovo's website asking about the Android beta program and the X4 (since it's a Project Fi phone) and was given a response that only the Nexus and Pixel devices can be part of the beta program.
How is that possible when the Samsung S8 has already got a second Oreo beta?

The AOSP Developer beta program is only available for Pixel & Nexus devices. This is a bone-stock, cutting-edge version of Android that is meant for development purposes, and is provided by Google directly.
Now that Oreo is released, and the AOSP sources are updated to 8.0, Samsung has taken the Oreo source and upgraded their own version of the phone software. This includes their custom software, bixby, etc. They are in the process of updating their entire current phone line from Nougat to Oreo, and they need beta testers. This is a totally different "Beta" program.
EDIT: clarification.

One plus update to Android 8.1 OP 3 / 3T?

Do you think that One Plus updates OP 3 / 3T to Android 8.1 or will it leave it in stable 8.0?
I doubt it. They want us to buy newer models.
As told to consumers by the Staff, the 3/3T will not be getting 8.1 Oreo as it is beyond the update cycle of the phones.
8.0 will be the final update pushed out officially by OnePlus.
However, you do have the choice of using ROM's when the Developer Previews are done on the Google Nexus/Pixel devices.
Edit: As pointed out to me by @Samitha192, Adam Krisko at OnePlus confirmed that 8.1 will be coming to the 3/3T.
Let's get 8.0 rolled out beyond open beta before we start speculating the future.

They said Oreo would be the last version, not 8.0 ! I believe that 8.1 belong to Oreo

It is under Oreo in AOSP, but it is a major OS revision. The Galaxy S7 did not get 7.1 , but it did get 7.0.
Don't keep hopes on OEM's releasing updates for phones that may be 2 years old when the 8.1 development has begun.

Samsung won't be updating their devices to 7.1 unless it's the device last update.
Any currently OS updated phone by Samsung will be done updated to Oreo.

8.1 looks more incremental than the jump from 7.0 to 7.1 (new sdk and some drastic changes)
Hopefully we get 8.1 on our devices. If OP to stop supporting 3/3t I'm expecting them to release the camera blobs so we can get 100% out of the hardware moving forward. :good:
I think these two will get the official android 8.1 update as there is already an unofficial Nitrogen OS 8.1 ROM for OnePlus 3/3T based on android 8.1 oreo is availble.

They said somewhere that they will release a 8.1 update for our phone, but can't find the source at the moment.
I only found this article: OnePlus 3/3T and 5/5T will get Android 8.1 Oreo but no Project Treble

Tbh Nitrogen 8.1 is better than Oxygen. Battery life is about an hour better with stock kernel.

I can second this, really impressed with the 12/12 build of NitrogenOS Oreo 8.1 ROM. Only thing I miss is SELinux enforced, but this will probably be changed when everything is working in enforced mode.

Yeah only reason its permissive is because this is a user-debug build. If I were to build a user build, it would be enforced and all.

I read about that and Moto X4 Android One will get 9.0 update sure.
The question is to know when X4's european owners receive this update.
According to Google:
"You’ll also get access to the latest updates from Android, such as Android Oreo before the end of the year. Android One moto x4 will be among the first to receive an upgrade to Android P."
https://www.blog.google/products/project-fi/project-fi-welcomes-android-one-moto-x4/
This was posted on the Lenovo (Motorola) website:

The official announcement of eligible Motorola phones that will get Android P will be made here: https://blog.motorola.com/

We already know that Moto X4 equipped with Android One will have Android P update but the question is to know if Moto X4 with Android Oreo standard will receive Android Pie.
On the other hand, the Motorola's blog in order to know updates news is the worst place where you can get report updates as they do not report anything at all.
Well, it looks like Motorola's blog just announced that Pie will be available this fall:
"...Android Pie will be served up on the below Motorola smartphones starting this fall:
...
moto x4"
https://blog.motorola.com/2018/08/15/baked-android-pie-coming-motorola/
My bets are that:
1. This only applies to Android One. Regular X4s will get it next year.
2. "This fall" means by the end of the calendar year.

The american retail variant are receiving updates at the same time as the Android One does, I think Android Pie will come together, but only for the american variant.

Build your own custom OS for Pixel 5 [11.x]

Intro
I'll start with this important note: this will likely be interesting to a small subset of users as it 1) does cost money to deploy and run this cloud infrastructure in AWS 2) requires a bit more technical knowledge to get this up and running than most things on XDA 3) the OS build process maintains verified boot with your own custom keys which means things like root/magisk are not a good fit. Anyways, I've created a cross platform tool, rattlesnakeos-stack, that allows you to build your own customized Android OS for Google Pixel phones using AWS cloud infrastructure. The default OS that this tools builds without any customizations is called RattlesnakeOS, which is really just AOSP with very minor additions. If there is something you don't like about the default OS, you can add customizations on top of it or start with a completely blank slate and build your own OS.
Features
Support for Google Pixel phones
Based on latest AOSP 11.0
Software and firmware security updates delivered through built in OTA updater
Maintains verified boot with a locked bootloader just like official Android but with your own personal signing keys
Support for building latest stable Chromium browser and webview
Support for custom OS builds
If any of that sounds interesting to you, head over to the README for full setup, build, customization, and flashing instructions. Also, feel free to stop by our matrix room RattlesnakeOS (#ros.matrix.org).
