Using XZ1 Compact as a Flash Drive - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

How do I use my XZ1 Compact as a Flash Drive? I plug it into my computer, but all it allows me to do is 'read-only' documents. I have to copy them onto my computer, do what I want to do, then copy them back. Seems a long-winded approach when on my previous Z3 Compact I could just plug it into my computer and use it as a USB drive.

It should behave the same as the Z3C; did you select the correct mode (MTP) after plugging in the USB cable?

That option isn't on the list of choices

Ah yeah, sorry, it's been simplified to just "Transfer files".
It's supposed to just work, but since it's not, try installing the XZ1C drivers on your computer, or reset your phone or perform a repair via Xperia Companion.
Remember to backup your data before doing a reset or repair.

With the 'Tansfer Files', it allows you to read-only, not actually use it as a proper USB drive. The Z3C had the 'Transfer Files' option in addition to 'use as USB'

What I'm saying is that's not normal. You should be able to use it like a flash drive with Transfer Files option.
"Transfer Files" uses the protocol called MTP, whereas the "use as USB" option on the Z3C uses the USB Mass Storage device protocol.
The latter was deprecated in newer Android versions and replaced by MTP exclusively, which is why there is no option for it on the XZ1C.
MTP supports the same usage scenarios, so it's not an issue of having the "use USB" option or not.
In any case, that the phone itself is supposed to allow reading and writing to the data partition and SD card like you'd expect is a fact.
This suggests that the inability to write to the phone's storage you're experiencing is likely caused by external factors, possibly your computer.
I did a quick Google search for "MTP read only", from scanning the first few results it seems like there's the possibility that it's blocked by antivirus software, or default behavior of certain libraries with Linux.
Try performing a search yourself with additional keywords relevant to your environment and see if anyone has a similar problem and hopefully a solution.

Now try to listen some music from your mtp device without copying it to PC.

[SOLVED] Not able to connect diamond to system in 'Disk Drive' Mode

Hello Friends,
I got a new HTC Touch Diamond about two days ago. I'm very eager to transfer my songs to it and when I tried to do so by connecting the phone to the system in 'Disk Drive' mode, it didn't work.
Each time I would connect the phone to my system and select the Disk Drive mode, the below would happen:
1. I'll see a 'New Disk Drive found' notification in my system tray.
2. The add new hardware wizard would come up with a message stating that there was a problem installing the new drive.
These two steps would keep on repeating untill I unplug the phone.
Though, I can connect the phone in ActiveSync mode without any issues.
If anyone of you has faced this issue, please let me know what needs to be done? Am I missing something?
Note: I had an older version of ROM (ROM version: 1.93.720.2) when I got the phone and I updated to ROM version: 1.93.720.4. I faced this issue both the times.
I have never used the disk drive mode. This restricts you from doing many things. I would suggest transferring all your files through activesync in the normal "Explore" way. This way may take a bit longer to transfer your files, but you can also sync them (the music ones) with your pc if you have Vista.....

I agree that it applies a few restrictions, however, transferring files via this mode is much faster.
I appreciate your reply, yet I need to get the disk drive mode working.
Thanks,

try changin another usb port, i suspect the port is faulty.. or change another cable.. i encounter such issue before and it turn out dat my usb port is acting weird..
Is possible to have an issue with windows drivers.
If the phone is working in active sync mode with the same port and cable, is not that.
While is connected as Disk Drive in device manager in USB section are you seeing it as storage?
If is there try from computer management\disk management to see if the partition from the phone is ok.
Best regards,
[SOLVED] Not able to connect diamond to system in 'Disk Drive' Mode Reply to Thread
This problem is solved for me now.
It appeared that the problem lay with my system and not the phone. I removed unneccesary programs and "cleaned" my system by using a trial version of System Mechanic v8.
I tried connecting after and now both disk drive mode and activesync mode work for me.
Thanks,

Personally didn't figure it out till a week into owning the phone that there was an extra step
involved in activating mass storage mode.
As mentioned, just slide down the top taskbar, click on the usb alert box and mount.
Thanks guys i knew that, i have been using android lately on desire. Well i solved the issue by downloading a driver.

Sorry to highjack this thread but - do we need to use the "safely remove hardware" on the PC and "remount SD card" on the phone before unplugging the USB cable?

Supposedly, one should firstly "safely remove hardware" via the usb window on the PC anytime there is
a need to sever a USB connection to a device.
However, in all honesty, I only know a handful of people who ever do this, and I'm not one of them.
Most if not all products with connections via USB won't be affected when it is just manually unplugged (disconnected from usb port)
unless you have data being transferred while you unplug/disconnect the usb device.
But for devices with their own proprietary OSes (PMP, MID, MP3 players, phones, etc.), it is recommended
you follow whatever steps they provide for you in the manual.

Thanks. I kinda freaked out today when I clicked "safely remove hardware" AND "remount internal SD card" on the SGS. The device later failed to recognize the internal SD card and screen went black. I thought I had bricked it and killed my internal SD. From now on, I might use an external microSD card to transfer movies into my device.

[Q] Question: Regarding The Mounting The Internal SD...

Hello,
I'm running a stock i896 (Rogers) Captivate. I am on WinXP 32-bit (x86).
I'm having trouble mounting the device's internal storage. What I've tried to do is connect my phone in the following two ways:
-1. Connect USB cable; select from one of the phones three options in the phone's pop-up menu: Kies (Firmware update), Media player, Mass storage
-2. Enter phone's Settings menu, and enable the option: Applications -» Development -» USB debugging; connect USB cable.
Both methods yield the same result: I hear Windows notification sounds that indicate a USB device has been connected (so far so good), check My Computer, and find that I have two new drives listed (one for internal, one for external—I assume).
The problem is, in attempting to access either of the two new drives (both labelled non-descriptly: "Removable Disk (X", where X is one of two consecutive drive-letters), I get the message: Please insert a disk into drive X:. I know not what to do at this point; I have no MicroSD card, but I assume that I ought be able to access the devices internal SD card without too much hassle...?
I've tried three different driver-packages so far (with clean uninstall/installs in-between): two Samsung ones, and one that came bundled inside PDANet's setup-package. (PDANet allows for cabled-sharing of a device's internet connection. The included driver was recommended in another thread.)
I wonder if there's something simple that I have to do—some toggle, that I've overlooked.
I'm new to the whole 'Droid mobile scene, having come over recently from Apple iOS (and I'm never going back). I'd like to get this sexy beast loaded up, and replace my old portable media-player.
While we're at it, are there obviously-superior alternatives to the stock media applications? Specifically, I like smooth, functional, pretty-looking apps—ones that are simple, efficient, easily-usable, and comprehensive (you know: good ones). Just wondering.
Thanks
Pull down the notification tray, tap USB storage, tap mount.

nc not appearing in pc

Tried in stock, cm7, different usb ports, win7, winxp, reboot nc but no joy. My nc wont appear or get detected by my pc.
All I want is to transfer files from pc to nc
Did you click the button in your status bar to enable USB mode?

which one is that? how will I enable usb mode?
is it the one with wifi, bt, gps, volume icon with the No notification?
how to copy movies and pdf using card reader?
When you plug into the PC, two extra notification icons should appear in the bottom status bar. If these do not appear then ignore the following, if they do appear then...
Pull the status bar up (with the round icon with the green up arrow or touch and drag up), then select the gray text that says "Select to copy files to/from your computer" You should see a little android guy with one button below him saying "click to turn on file transfer" or some such. Then it should show up as a drive on your PC.
there is no notification icons that appear in the status bar near clock and batt...
It says "No notifications" too in wifi bt crosshair volume bar...
I have the same problem with my nc not showing up...
Can not connect to PC with USB. Using SD to boot to the CM7.
Have not found anything regarding the USB mode.
Where is it?
on your OC... Nook NOT connected....
Go into device manager...
View... check "Show hidden devices"
Under Android Phone... delete "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Under Disk Drives.... delete any drives that are "B&N Ebook Disk USB Device"
Under Portable Devices... delete any drevices that are not currently connected
Under Universal Serial Bus controllers...
select each device that is not a "Universal Host Controller" or is not OBVIOUSLY not nook related (i.e. "Apple ...." or "Generic USB Hub" or "SAMSUNG..." etc...
Check the properties of the device... on the "Details" tab... select "Hardware Ids".... delete any that are "USB\VID_2080...."
Install the drivers then connect the Nook
I actually had this problem for quite a while. Check the microUSB connector on your cable, if it's even a little bit loose, you may need to replace it. Just call B&N up and ask for a replacement, they should give you a free one.

WalangA, are you still having problem or being solved? Let me know, I might able to help.
Also, pls tell us you're running CM7 from where? eMMC or uSD.
If you have home wifi, here's another option: go to the market and download WiFi File Transfer. Start Wifi File Transfer on your Nook and it will give you a number (something like 192.168.1.3:1234). Open a browser on your desktop and put whatever number shows on the NC into the location of your browser. You can then move files back and forth - no usb cable needed.

[Q] File System Access via USB?

Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?
Works for me. ES file manager does too.

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

I know. Never understood the need for specialized drivers when they could just mount as a standard USB Mass Srorage device and be compatible with everything out of the box
But I guess that would just make too much sense...
Has anyone tried a otg with it yet
Same Problem Here...
I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.
Probably already answered but yes you can. Just gotto my computer as yyou'd lookfor a uUSB device. And sorry aboutmiss sspells. Swift key sucks so much...... Omfg.
Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117349/
"USB Mass Storage feature is currently not available, however, files can be transferred to/from a computer utilizing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)"
Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.
