Loud speaker takes about 2 solid seconds to activate during call - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

So i called someone just to check the call quality in both ear piece as well as speaker phone. But then i realized that it took a brief moment to activate the loud speaker. First i thought it might be a proximity sensor issue. But after testing it few more times, i found out that proximity's got nothing to do with it. It was always working as intended after i press the loud speaker button. But it always takes a solid 2 seconds to activate. Might just be a minor bug that can be fixed with a software update. And yes i did try clearing cache and recent apps and did try rebooting afterwards. It's still taking 2 seconds to activate.

I can confirm this behavior. I think what it's actually doing is fading the volume up when you switch to speaker, which makes it seem like it takes a few seconds to switch over. The reason I think this is because it seems to do the same thing with ringtones... when my phone starts to ring, it quickly increases the volume over the first second or two of the ring. My guess is some Moto black magics.

Ya i guess that's definitely some moto sorcery going on there lolz. And i guess this thread didn't pick any traction because these days, not many people use their phone for calling purpose anyways?

is the ascending ringtone problem solved on 2.2?

When I set a custom ringtone, the first 1-2 seconds of the song fade in.
If your ringtone has a bit of silence as it starts then you won't notice it.
The fading is not present in the settings menu, but only when a call comes in.
Please test and let me know.
Thank you
I have the same question too
Still got the "problem", to my luck though... used in ears with too high ringer volume and took the call fast enough ^^
You cannot technically call this a problem. It is done intentionally by samsung. What I am wondering is why it isn't configurable like it was in previous samsung phones i owned (like the TouchWiz F480)
For those who do not know, the fading is added so that the ringtone doesn't blast your ears deaf if a call comes in right after you finished your last one (unless if you are using a headset, the phone will be right next to your ear at that moment).
well the feature is crap. It should have option whether we want this feature or not instead of forcing us on it.
Thank you

Thank you Samsung for avoiding staining my shirt with brain fragments... my dog is also very thankful!
samsung should provide setting to turn on/off this ascending ringtone.
Perhaps they should provide the option.. but I personally think this "feature" is good. Especially since I got tinnitus, and hence take all precautions to protect my hearing from future damage.
any solutions ?
i have the same issue on my galaxy s
While some people think its a good "feature", others do not. I'd rather have this feature disabled like most people out there, so we can have those extra 2 seconds to hear the phone ringing from our pockets.
... Its not like you're holding the phone to your ear ALL the time!! Even when you're not doing anything. Cause if you are, then you have a problem!!

[Q] Possible blown speaker or just interference?

I'm getting some sort of buzzing from my phone, whenever I press a navigation button, or press any on screen button/action. I first noticed this when I was setting up my phone and deselecting which apps to install from a previous backup. Every time I would untick a box, it would make a sound for about 2 seconds. The best way to describe the sound, is like the ticking/buzzing sound a hard disk drive makes, only much quieter.
This seems to happen only when I take an action (IE pressing the home button, pressing on an app to open, ticking a check box, etc.)
This seems to only be noticeable in a quiet room, and regardless of the phone being on mute or not.
Obviously there is no disk drive in the phone, so my only guess would be some sort of interference, or static coming from the top earpiece. I'm leaning towards a blown speaker, because when I play music, I can hear a very faint buzzing/popping sound coming from the top earpiece.
Anyone else able to duplicate this?

Play Store. Just picked it up yesterday from UPS. That's what I'm thinking as well. Do you know how the RMA process is like with the GPS?
they'll replace your phone for free. what they do is they Charge you another $649 (as a temporary hold on your credit card), while they send you a replacement unit. WHEN you send them the defective one back, they cxl the $649 hold on your credit card.

The RMA instructions can be found here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2411741?hl=en&ref_topic=3244667
I've read good things but have no experience for any device I've purchased. Because of the stocking issues (worse than the N4 and N5 at their launches combined), I don't know how soon you can expect a replacement. (Way to shine, Moto!)
Have you all considered that the sound you are hearing is the feedback sounds from preforming actions?
To access (which they are all on by default) and turn them off go into Settings>Sound & Notification>Other Sounds
Before doing anything, be sure that these are not the sounds you are talking about. Last thing you want to do is RMA something that is not broke.

I did this too, I checked and the sound i get is "expected" slightly different if you enable and test agains the nexus 5 in lollipop but its is quite similar in sound. Its more of a popping sound for the lock screen and a bop sound for touching the screen.

I liked the sound on my nexus 5 but don't like it on the 6. I am not sure if it is just more clear now or what but I turned them off.
I just noticed this as well. I had Kritika (game) running on my phone, media volume at 0. I set it down on my desk to do something else and that's when I heard a faint static-y, hissing/crackling noise. It was coming from the top speaker. I held the phone up to my ear to be sure. I switched into Kik and the sound went away. I closed Kritika and opened up Slingshot Braves (another game, media volume still at 0) and there was a consistent white noise coming from the top speaker. Same thing happened when I tried it with SoundCloud and Play Music. It wasn't erratic like it was when Kritika was open, but there was definitely something there.
Seems to me like something is wrong with the media volume control.
EDIT: I've started a thread on the Google forums. Feel free to chime in.

You're not alone.
I'm experiencing this issue as well. There's also a subreddit post and another post here on XDA about it... I'm wondering if it's a defect or if it's normal.
Happens in top speaker for me as well. I notice it particularly well with the second half of the ringtone/notification sound, "Ganymede." Should we ask for a replacement?
Nexus 6 Volume/Speaker Bug
Same here. I am using the ATT Nexus 6 and have also noticed that the volume drops drastically when receiving a phone call. Also, it is difficult to hear the person on the other end even with the volume all the way up. The volume issue also applies when the phone is on "speaker" mode. It is still hard to hear. This may be a Lollipop issue.
I don't want to double post but I can confirm after receiving a replacement device that my original device did have a speaker defect. More info in my other post @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57118790#post57118790

Slight crackle in speakers?

Does anyone else have a slight crackle noticeable at high volume while playing songs or loud noises? Its a slight crackle and you can tell the sound is not as pure as it should be. Put a song on YouTube full blast and see if you can notice any little crackle, you might notice sound is not butter smooth....
I have a crackle on the bottom speaker with the stock ringtone. i posted about it on here, but noone responded
I have the same issue with the volume is all the way up. But if I lower the volume a little it's good. This phone is crazy loud

If it does it will just limit the max volume.
Yea it sounds like a software blip actually. The sound isnt like a rattle from an unseated or blown speaker its strange. I wonder why no one else hasnt brought this up...
I had issues the first day but none recently... Maybe they just need to break in
Yea if i blownin the top speaker while its playing it crackles loke crazy. Not that you shoukd do that. I did very lightly. The bottom speaker does not. Might have to rma.

This has to be an audio bug. I have also noticed it on my ATT Model. I have also noticed that the ringer volume drops dramatically when receiving calls. It is also hard to hear the person on the other unless the phone is held close to the ear.
Been having the same issue. It seems to mainly happen at the beginning of some notification sounds, almost like it has trouble initializing the sound on command.
I noticed this when I was playing a game, after muting all sounds, it sounds like the speaker is still active and produces noise. Its more of a hum than a crackle, for me at least. I I'm pretty sure its a software issue and not a hardware.

With regards to the popping/crackling/buzzing that I posted earlier in this thread (I think on the last page to be exact; also this may be different from what you're describing), I have confirmed via a replacement device that I just received today that it was a hardware defect, NOT a software defect. There is no popping/crackling/buzzing or anything like that with the new one, and I even held them side by side and did a comparison for another person just to make sure I'm not crazy haha (though it was pretty apparent when the new one didn't exhibit the problem I was hearing with the first one). On a side note, the screen on the new one looks like it has better whites (I didn't have a problem with the other screen, and it looked just fine to me, but side by side you can see a difference and I guess I got a two for one on this by doing the exchange!)
And finally, I didn't have to update the replacement out of the box like I did the first phone, which means they're now shipping phones that already have the latest update applied to them. Just thought I'd check back to let you all know that if you do have this issue, you SHOULD RMA/exchange it for a new one, because it is NOT a software glitch if you have the same issues that I described previously.
Hope this helps =]

Yes it does help, thanks! Im going to rma mine monday and post back with my results also.
I first noticed a problem with my speakers when I made my first call. My nexus 5 always had great call quality but my friend sounded so hollow and not at all as clear as on the 5.
Then I tried sounds, music. It definitely has a noticeable 'peak' and high and low notes flatten and rattle. Is this what you all are experiencing?

Anyone noticing issues with WhatsApp? I can't seem to hear the conversation tone while I'm chatting. The notification rings just fine, it's just the conversation tone. I've factory reset, but made no difference. Any help will be appreciated.
hey all, i definitely have crackle on the bottom speaker. i do not have any issues with the top. I hear it with notifications as well as music. Here is a good test YouTube video that i am using to see if anyone can compare. I have to hit the vol rocker down 7 times from full volume to get crackling to go away.
I've contacted Google (i purchased through Google Play Store) and they are shipping out a replacement saying this should not happen.
Here are the steps they had me take to test the device.
1) make sure Bluetooth was off
2) check the volume settings for all types of notifications (ringtone, alerts, alarm...)
3) reboot into safe mode and see if it still persists
---> to boot into safe mode, hold the power button like u are going to turn the phone off, when the "Power off" option pops up on screen, long press it and it will ask if you;d like to boot into safe mode. THIS ONLY LETS STOCK APPS TO RUN, thats why i used youtube for the example.
4) factory reset(they asked how i did it, i did it normally through the system settings)
After this, the rep explained that this was the first time she heard of the issue and the replacement device shouldn't have any speaker issues.
I also asked if it will be a new device and she said yes, no refurbishes. If the issue happens again, she mentioned to call back in and they will replace it no problem. Hopefully this first replacement won't have the same problem, but i love the phone so much that im willing to have them ship multiple out until i get a good one.
hope this helps!!
EDIT: forgot to mention, they put a hold on your credit card for up to 7 days until they receive the device back. You SHOULD choose next day shipping as that will be part of the hold and your card will NOT get charged for any extra shipping charges.
Wish me luck!!!
here is a quick youtube video i made comparing a faulty device and a working device
pay attention to the "dings" in the beginning of each part of the video, you may have to watch it a couple times to hear the difference - to me its noticeable right away. The first 3-4 seconds of the video sounds fuzzy/crackly... The same "dings" around 7 seconds are not fuzzy or crackly at all.... there you have it folks, Hardware defect!
Same issue here
Tried factory reset etc, still same volume lowering amd crackling

Im curious about this too. I've noticed that it "increases" with everything though; notifications, alarms and even playing youtube videos. I wonder if this is a bug to be fixed at some point.

Really? Granted, I havent had a Moto phone since the original Atrix but I dont remember it happening on that. I dont necessarily care that it increases on ringtones or alarms, its mostly for maybe a half second. The problem is notification tones that are about half a second long that i dont hear.

I agree, I kinda like this feature too. Just some food for thought guys - the speakers on this phone are pretty powerful. The gradual escalating volume might be a measure to ensure that the speakers don't blow out.

I'm not sure, that's a pretty good question. I might be wrong, but maybe Google assumed that 1) YouTube videos are watched at a user-defined volume anyway, so why mess with it, and 2) there are apps that have volume escalation for alarms, and we'll install them if we want them.
Honestly, I have no idea. All I know it's that 1) there are many times when my ring tone volume was all the way up, and an incoming call would be a shock to me, when it started blaring, and 2) my girlfriend is loud as hell, so it's nice to have my phone controlling the initial volume of her voice, lol.
Sent from my 64GB MB Nexus 6
Considering just about every app that has sound doesn't do this I doubt its to prevent anything.
Most phone besides moto have ascending ringtones etc. I'm sure there will be a way to get rid of it eventually
When the ringtone/alarm/notification starts, does anyone else have a brief, less than half second, slightly louder tone play? It almost sounds like a pop before my ringer starts to fade in, but you can hear it's the beginning of the tone, just slightly louder then it goes quiet, and fades in
Edit: just did a little testing, it doesn't always happen, it seems like I could force it if I opened a game (clash of clans) for a couple seconds, then stopped and locked the phone.. then when the ringer starts it does the brief less than half second at a med-low volume, then goes to low and starts ramping up. The next call the ringer behaves normally, starts at low and ramps up.

yes, i get that sometimes.
ok cool, just got the phone last Wed, and with some of the quality issues that have been popping up, I'm trying to rule out any defects before it's too late lol.. great phone so far, just a few weird quirks like this, hopefully they'll get them ironed out in a timely manner.
I don't mind it on my call ringtone, but it is really annoying with my facebook messenger or my text messages. It also doesn't help that if the notifications aren't full volume then I can't hear anything; because the front facing speakers are always up against my leg in my pocket.
Any word on a work around for this yet?

Any devlopments? I cant stand this "feature" (mainly for alarms).
bump again. Would love to get rid of it. It even does a gradual volume increase when switching from handset to speakerphone on a call. And that's just silly.
Still no solution to this miserable "feature"? Drives me nuts.....

I started having the speaker pop issue start recently. It's any time after something uses the speakers. Like you can hear the amp shutting off. I've had the phone since Monday and mostly keep it on mute so maybe I just haven't noticed it before. But this weekend I've been playing more with the ringtones, notification, etc. It's kind of irritating now.

I too have the crackling sound when pressing on the lower third of the back of the phone. Not sure what about the sound 5 seconds after typing but I have noticed that some times the sound is quiet from time to time seems random to me. After watching the tear down video what I believe your hearing is the glass back making contact with the plastic that covers the wireless charging part and then separating from it when you relieve the pressure. I'm betting the rubbery plastic covering the wireless charging pad is slightly tacky.
I'm experiencing this since you asked, probably wouldn't be if you didn't lol
Also have popping noise since the Razer update randomly and when I use the touchpad, it's annoying, I think the problem is software, and hopefully will get fixed soon, as for the enjoy l empty water bottle sure when squeezing the lower third of the phone, I think it's an adhesive thing like notasaurus says

I doubt its the wireless charging part. Even when pressing down where the logo is, I still hear the crackling sound.
I also have the same issues
Just wanted to add a vote to the crinkling when squeezing the phone and the speakers popping. No other issues with the phone so far. (For me personally, the crinkling when squeezing the phone isn't an issue.)
I'm not sure if this helps (I don't own the device) but I remember reading somewhere another user faced the same speaker sound popping issue, and what they did was go to Settings > Sound and turned off. . . one of the "Other Sounds" sounds. I can't recall which one but try turning off all - Dial pad tones, screen locking sounds, charging sounds, touch sounds and touch vibration(?) ... see if that helps? One of them was supposed to fix it.
Again, I don't own the device, I just remember reading this somewhere, some other user faced this issue.
Lockbutton doesn't feel right
I have a weird feeling with the lock button, it's not feeling like a button. Could it be that it's stuck inside? Just unboxed it... Can't really press it - only tap it. I have the Razer Phone V1 which has a defined click, but the V2 feels more like those home buttons from iPhones with the taptic engine instead of a real button but without a tap feeling. Is that normal? Otherwise I will make a refund on Amazon and get a cheaper one from the Razer store...

From your description, it sounds like you received a defective phone or something.
Haven't used the Razer V1 phone, but have used 2 different Razer Phone 2s and both have physical clicks. In addition to the feel, there's an audible click also (coming from the button itself--not artificial). I will say that because the button sits flush with the phone, it feels "different" than other phones I've had because tbe frame of the phone protects the button. But it should physically depress.
Regarding the clicking speaker sounds you have been describing, your feedback is welcome! Please join and contribute to the XDA thread Snap sound coming from speakers.

Ok, talked to the support yesterday and they say that it's a defect. And that they will send me a new one.
Oh man, Razer definitely has to improve their quality check procedures. I have now my 3rd Razer Phone V1 (one with defect speakers and one with a digitizer malfunction) and now my 2nd Razer Phone V2 after that problem with the lock button.
Never had problems like that with my Nexus 5X or my Moto G... And those were a lot cheaper.
