Hey everyone,
I am new back to the custom ROM game and I am wondering what is most stable right now.
I installed CMRemix yesterday but started getting "Google play services has stopped" loops and "cannot connect to camera."
I have been thinking about trading the device in for a Nexus 6, but I really enjoy the Note 4 and would just prefer to have a more stable build.
What do you guys think? I could always go back to Stock also, but that doesn't seem very fun.
This guy was 1 of the 2 developers for the s5.
I'm testing his rom out, right now.
Haven't run into any trouble.

Infinity and Alliance have both been rock solid. PacRom was great also
I have been using the SM-N910W8 port and it has worked well for me.Also I can recommend Alliance,Beanstalk and Pac-Rom also but there are so many choices for this model now. I say try them all and see which one caters more to your liking but remember to make a nandroid backup .
I've fallen absolutely head-over-heels in love with Alliance. I'd elaborate but I think pretty much every other thing I post these days is an ode to its perfection. I will however say that it's super stable and has unparalleled customization. You can theme almost every aspect of it on the fly. I've been getting above average battery life out of it too. Prior to finding Alliance iI hopped between a bunch of lollipop ROMs and Project Infinity was my favourite of the bunch back then out of the touchwiz based crowd, although if DynamicPop is anythinglike DK, aand I understand that it is, then that's most definitely going to be worth a look. Rapture /Arcadia (the one that has the most active development, I always get them mixed up) is a nice, stable no frills rom and pretty lean. As far as CM12/12.1 based ROMs Beanstalk has always been my favorite. CmRemix is great too, would give Beanstalk a serious run for its money, were it not for how wildly each release swings from super stable to a horrorshow so I found the whole process to be too stressful and full of compromise. When it's good it's great though. Unless something has drastically changed since I switched to Alliance Beanstalk is feature-packed, stable and easy on the eyes and battery.
In all honesty pretty much any of the lollipop Touchwiz based roms are pretty well put together and have one or more extremely dedicated and talented developers behind them
and you'll probably be happy with whatever you flash. AOSP ones seem to be a bit more hit-or-miss stabilitywise, but still have a lot to offer too. As someone else said, make a backup just in case and then flash away until you find the one that's right for you.

I've had my T-Mobile S5 for about 2 months, bought it used after my S4 drowned in a swimming pool. So far I love the thing, and I've been trying lots of ROMs, but I can't seem to find one that matches the speed or battery life of the stock! What's up with that?
Memorable roms I've tried:
Cyanogenmod 12.1 Nightly
Tesla ROM for S5
TipsyOS for S5
All of these roms were stable, but they felt slow. Especially from waking the device while locked, it always seemed to take a few seconds for the display to pop up, as opposed to the almost instantaneous response from the stock (debloated) T-Mobile rom. Another issue was battery life, with the stock debloated rom I get insane battery life. Like I can use it all day and still have 60%+ when I get home from work. With the other roms I never had more than 20%. I gave each rom several days to "settle" but nothing seemed to change.
I'm skeptical that roms based on CM12.1 would be any faster/better, but I'm willing to try. I think AICP would be my next choice.
What do you guys have to say? Any fast/good roms out there for the S5 that don't kill battery life?
I found the same, tried a few popular custom ROMs, but none of them matched the smoothness, stability or battery life of stock

I've felt mostly the same for the most part. I've had my gs 5 since the day it came out for tmobile. I really like it and all. But I've really been on the prowl for a good custom rom. Most of the best things aren't as stable as stock touchwiz.
I mean don't get me wrong there are a ton of custom roms (at least right now, a year ago not so much).
That said I have done extensive testing of alot of aosp roms. MY findings are below:
- The most stable rom I've used was probably a version of sokp rom from all the way back in may. Its not perfect, but pretty quick. I used it for 6 months before it suddenly started giving me bootloops which I think I caused by messing with xposed and my kernel. Overall, It has probably the best battery life and is the least volatile, but has little features and is outdated. Another thing to note is that I used ktoonez kernel with this so that maybe why battery life was better.

-Another rom that I used frequently, and am currently using is Fusion rom. Its ever so slightly more buggy, and you have to find your own gapps but still stable. Not to mention that fusion probably has more features than any other custom rom out there. I cant speak for the battery life just yet, but its bearable. Another plus is their still updating it! Its also the fastest of the three IMO.

- The last custom rom you should look into is dirty unicorns. Its not that big so you proabably havent heard of it, but its just as stable as the sokp rom. It has alot more features though, and is still updated frequently. Has alotta bloat though for an aosp rom, as isn't particularly fast for a custom rom.

Based on your memorable roms, I might also suggest looking into AICP which is suuuuuuupppper fast, faster than alotta roms but still only on nightlies.

Long posts are the best posts! Anyway, the only reason I'm hesitant to try AICP is because it's CM based, and I had Bluetooth issues with the official CM. (I use Bluetooth every day for hours)
I think I'll try at least Fusion Rom, thanks for the insight! I'm hoping that SlimRoms will make a comeback and *hopefully* add support for our device. I used slim on a previous phone and it was phenomenal.
Hi, I have just flashed Nougat 7.1.1 factory image and it is notlaggy as previous nougat image.
But, IDK, I was having issues with Pixel launcher and ram usage, went to CM 14.1 but phone was laggy aF.
As I think, this will be the latest Nougat or Whatever update We will be receiving for this device.
And I wanted to know if I should keep stock nougat running for a few weeks [No FC's, no Restarts, No Issues so far] or if I should change to a AOSP rom.
Based on your personal experience, [And if you have traveled this route before], What would you recommend?
Stock Nougat 7.1.1 N4F26M or Any other AOSP [Tell me your favorite ones, without that extreme menu settings or linux shell to make it a daily driver]
I think more of a ROM for the looks, combined with good performance... Loved the Pixel Launcher tho! but it is not optimized correctly.
Miui is far behind on software version and no oficial port.

LineageOs is not eligible "Yet" for my daily driver [this is my only phone for now]
Do not like menu settings with a lot of banners and 'notification bar settings extended"..
I do want, performance settings, maybe a different kernel with the rom.

Why don't you give it a try to PureNexus ROM. Its fast, very stable and with very few bugs, if any, plus you get that Pixel like experience. It gets updated at least monthly, if not more often.
To me, it looked more stable that CM 14.1, I see that especially when I use Snapchat, which runs much better in this ROM. Dont get me wrong, stock Nougat is very good but does not have so many features as PureNexus has.

I'm having better experience with AOSP, I'm now running EmotionOS and the kernel it includes, I don't know if it has a custom one, If it doens't replace the kernel, I'm using it with Franco Kernel. Coming from the latest stock 7.1.1, is a much better experience IMO. Give it a try to Emotion OS with pico gapps.
Pure Nexus is amazing in terms of performance and most importantly the battery life. I am not talking about SoT or otherwise, I will tell you as a very layman experience. You use your phone, do whatsapp, surf facebook and browse during the day with all other normal activities of your life and PureNexus can easily give you 24hours or more of the charge without compromising the features and performance. I think you should try PureNexus AND stay with it for a week. Do not judge the battery life of a rom in a day or two, let it tune itself after a couple of charge (complete) discharge cycles and you'll be ok with it.

Well I use the kernel that comes with it, since I don't feel the need to mess with other kernels. It gives me pretty good battery life and rock solid performance. I use Kernel Adiutor only to enable Double Tap to wake feature.
If you want to change things a little bit then Franco Kernel works good as well. I used it but messed it up and the phone started making funny things, restarts and such. But then again I didn't knew what I was doing at the time, so I let it go completely. Other users though had very good experiences with it.
I'm very tempted to try Pure Nexus ROM, I'm a purist always used only stock and no root, in fact I miss marshmallow and how fluid it was, but anyway kind of happy with nougat. Now that seems that 7.1.1 is buggy (speakerphone issue) I won't side load that update til we know the issue is fixed. So do you guys know if that ROM somehow fixes that annoying increasing ringtone and tone sounds when a message arrives in Nexus 6? I already read the goodies the ROM have posted by you guys, what else do you gain with this ROM? Many thanks.

My 3T has arrived, and I want to migrate from my 5X. I have a couple of questions:
Which ROM?
I know this has been discussed ad-infinitum, but I can't see the forest for the trees. I see lots of discussion about Oxygen vs CM / Lineage / Paranoid Android / AOSPE. I can say that even though I'm a "power user" in that I use my phone a lot, I am happy to stay close to the vanilla Android experience with minimal bloatware / "custom" experiences. I will need root for Titanium Backup, Greenify(*), Xposed, and perhaps a couple of other apps. In the olden days, I used CM on my HTC Desire and Moto G, but my Nexus has been just great with the factory ROM. I'm looking for maximum stability rather than tweakability that I'll never use. And sorry for being lazy, but I don't want to try ten ROMs to see what suits me, it will just become a pain.
How to migrate my apps and data?
Just use Titanium Backup? It's worked well for me in the past between different handsets. Or is the Google Android sync working well these days, and everything will just sync when I sign in with my Google Account?
(*) Is Greenify still regarded as useful on a 3T?

OxygenOS: Better camera. Reliable slow motion video recording, slightly better image quality.
Currently there is a bug on the latest official version (and custom ROMs based on it) that randomly wakes the screen up during phone calls if you have the double tap to wake feature enabled. Disable it or use the latest open beta, which is number 13 at the moment.
LineageOS: You have Substratum and and a bunch of ROMs based on it with a bunch of features. I believe you know it already, so it's up to you to decide.
Use Titanium if you want the app data as well, for example facebook login, offline game saves, etc. Google backup simply installs all the apps and logs you into Google services.

I do take a lot of photos (snaps, for serious stuff I use a DSLR), so camera quality is important to me. However if we're talking about a small difference between cameras, and the Lineage camera is still fine for most use, I don't think I would use camera quality as a single reason to prefer one ROM to another. Anything else good / better about OxygenOS, or is it mostly bloatware (for someone like me who's quite vanilla ).
It will be weird but good going back to Lineage, as a CM user from many years ago. What about AOSP(E)? Does it feature in the equation?
On one hand, I love the developer-friendliness of OnePlus, on the other hand, there's so much contradictory information out there, it's hard to know what's real. Some people say the cameras are night and day, some say they're similar. Some say battery life is night and day, some say similar. I just edited my original post because I read that Paranoid Android might be a contender... You get my point...
From what you say, I'll definitely use Titanium. I've been with it for years, so I know where I am. In fact, maybe I should stop Google installing the apps so I can do it with Titanium?
I went from the Nexus 5x to the OnePlus 3T myself, and I'm currently running Paranoid Android. It's close to stock, has great battery life (usually I have 73% battery after 6 hours of frequent usage, but I don't have a Sim Card at the moment so I don't know the drainage with data enabled) and great performance. Bluetooth devices have a battery level in the status bar which I find incredibly useful, and theming is nice and easy. Only problem is updates, so I recommend switching to an Oreo based ROM when they are developed and switch back to PA when it gets Oreo.
i have been use all rom and the best still oxygen os very stable and minimum bloatware best rom so far but now i tried AOSPA and great but i think the oxygen is best
If you are lazy, Use FreedomOS : it's stock beta rom with nice addons: bloatremover,magisk,... and it's stock, mean you are no need to think about other problems like bugs~ they will be fixed by oneplus.
If you still want something like you old nexus i think you should take a look at Viper: not update so weekly, but it mean less bugs, brilliant features, nice stock apps, and even 2 theme engines: one similar to OOS and one is famous Substratum

That's exactly the kind of disruption I want to avoid. But PA is currently pretty up to date, so hopefully they can keep it that way. I could wait a few weeks for Oreo whilst bugs are ironed out.

They're still on 7.1.1, PA is up to 7.2.3. Also I'd be worried about the long-term, it seems PA have disappeared in the past, but at least they are a big team, FreedomOS looks like a one-man show.

PA 7.2.3 is android 7.1.2 like other custom roms based on aosp/linage , 2.3 is just their name they call that rom,
And about long term support, here in XDA, we all knows every devs have their life, they could drop their project for works family...
we can't blame them:fingers-crossed:, since we pay nothing but "likes" for their works, PA may discounted, FreedomOS too.But there will many good devs here, in XDA create new good rom for us,
Did you have an nexus5 before?i run it great for years with slimkat, DU... then google dropped support for it and slim disappear, but even now, nexus 5 still can run good with android 7.1.2 Darkrom. and even Gcam with HDR+ from pixel, So dont worry about support. we're in XDA, with little search, try few roms for days, then choose your favorite :good: I'm currently running Viper with google cam, but maybe i will add lastest freedomos as secondary in multirom.

I wouldn't blame any open source development for not having time, but equally I'd rather use a ROM that gets updated in a reasonable (not quick) time. I just don't have time to spend hours researching every few months.
I have a Nexus 5X, running 7.1.2 from Google, with minimal tweaks. SuperSU, Titanium, Greenify (is that still a thing that people use), AdAway. I've been really happy with that setup.
So it's a funny decision:
PA based on AOSP with many useful things added.
FreedomOS based on Oxygen with non-useful things removed, and a few useful things added?
Did I sum it up reasonably?
Also, are these statements relevant / true?
PA is CAF-based and FreedomOS isn't? If so, should I care?
FreedomOS has Viper4Android and ARISE, which as a music fan I should care about? Or is it just fake audio processing, which actually makes the audio less natural? I'd never heard of either until I started reading about 3T ROMs.
This is not a place to compare roms, but a place to share your experience with your current daily driver on your Oneplus 5.

I tried many Roms and Kernels since I've got my OP5 about an week and a half ago.
First thing i was getting rid of the "buggy" official stock rom haha. I played with it for a vew hours and gave in. Than i was preparing everything for unlocking, rooting etc..etc... It was easier than i thought! Didn't expect it!
First ROM i flashed was an unreleased BETA build from a team i being part off. Just to getting used to this device and playing aLOT with an optimized Kernel (also an build by the Team Dev) after a vew days, i was trying other ROMs, i mean no Roms that where close or based on stock OOS. More based on AOSP and LOS.
After a couple of days, i found my right ROM and Kernel combination so i ended up with:
"RR Unofficial" with "Blu_Sparky" Kernel!
I like the debloated version of RR and the battery friendly and easy tunable Blu_Spark Kernel with EX Manager.
I get about 9-10 hours SOT, since I'm not an heavy multitasker or gamer. Besides that, i'm facing no errors, no random reboots, no screen blackouts, or whatsoever! It is for me the Stable Combination!
Currently I'm waiting for an Android 8 Build by the Team Dev. Which is also going to be an AOSP based Rom with "hopefully" aLOT of Optimizations!

My first ever Android device was a Nexus 6P, and I ran only Pure Nexus on it. I then moved to the Pixel XL, and also primarily ran Pure Nexus. After basically two years of running an AOSP based ROM, I had only good opinions on AOSP based ROMs.
Because development seemed a little tricky for Pixels, I decided to switch over to the OnePlus 5. I, then, flashed a handful of AOSP based ROMs, hoping I would receive the same stability, smoothness, and just the right amount of features Pure Nexus has.
The results didn't seem to be the same. I am by no means bashing on, hating, or criticizing any AOSP based ROM that is available for this device, but I personally just did not feel the same smoothness as I did on Pure Nexus. I decided to try LOS based ROMs, and the unofficial RR has by far been the best!
It's smooth, stable, and very snappy. There is one thing that "bugs" me though (excuse the pun lol):
The VPN icon doesn't hide, unless you disable and reenable something else in the SystemUI tuner. This workaround only lasts until you restart the phone, or even restart the SystemUI
Another thing worth noting (which isn't a bug), there are some unneeded apps that I have to manually uninstall with TitaniumBackup, such as the Music app, the file explorer, and the default phone and contacts app (among a couple others). Very small inconvenience and it's not enough to keep me away from the ROM lol.
Other than that, it's an amazing ROM, especially because it already comes with a custom kernel, and YouTube AdBlock/Background Playback!
Going back to the AOSP based ROMs, just to further reinforce that I'm not trying to bash these ROMs: OnePlus 5 is still a relatively new device, and development is probably still in its early stages; I'll definitely give those ROMs another try down the road, and see how my experience is then.
Also, I wasn't on those ROMs for too long, so maybe I just didn't allow the OS to "settle". Not sure if this is even a real thing, but I've heard other users mentioning letting a fresh install of an OS "settle" before truly making any critiques/comments.
As for OOS based ROMs, I was on stock for a very short amount of time, and I also tried xXx, both great ROMs (especially xXx). However,when you have as many features/customization options as RR has, it's hard to use anything OOS-based, especially because there is no full Substratum support (which is super important to me).

The VPN icon doesn't hide, unless you disable and reenable something else in the SystemUI tuner. This workaround only lasts until you restart the phone, or even restart the SystemUI
Another thing worth noting (which isn't a bug), there are some unneeded apps that I have to manually uninstall with TitaniumBackup, such as the Music app, the file explorer, and the default phone and contacts app (among a couple others). Very small inconvenience and it's not enough to keep me away from the ROM lol.
Other than that, it's an amazing ROM, especially because it already comes with a custom kernel, and YouTube AdBlock/Background Playback!

Well elaborated. And as you know the device is very new, so hopefully custom roms will become more and more stable with time.

I used Nexus 6p before i bought the OP5 and I think OxygenOS is one of the best roms build by a hardware building company. After some months I started to switch my kernel because I had a little bit drain and started to read in Xda what could help and now I am at my best every day use combination and it is OOS plus blu_spark it works stable and I can underclock it easily because I am a light user: Browsing, WhatsApp and Phone call sometimes Maps that's all what I need and this combo lifts my usage to 2 full days. I am not an SOT guy so the lowest Screen Off Drain is my Must Have.

Just a quick update on my daily driver:
In my previous post I mentioned being on RR Unofficial, but since then I have switched to Pure Fusion!
As you know from my previous post, I'm a huge PureNexus fan and Pure Fusion is based on that, so I flashed it in a heartbeat.
That with the stock kernel has been amazing, as I feel it provides just the right amount of features I'll most likely be sticking to this ROM for as long as I own this device!

As far as I can tell, it's pretty much identical. The settings for the ROM have the same UI, very similar set of features; maybe just a little more than PureNexus!
It's also fast, smooth and stable like PureNexus as well

I'm on N as there is no O build available just yet. Signal is completely fine, but I believe there were a couple of users having issues with signal strength.
I've encountered no bugs or issues thus far. I did have random reboots but a clean flash seemed to have helped
