Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Unlocked) 11/29/2017 OTA Android update, Safe or not? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hello.
Does anyone know the actual contents of this OTA update that was released today 11/29/17? After the horrible time Samsung and Android gave me after the Note7 fiasco I have become very untrusting of them. The first Note8 OTA update left me with little options relating to rollback and such things.
I would like to know what is exactly in this update. The page I found is vague. The information they leave for the average consumer is always vague.
If no one knows, can anyone lead me to where I can find more information about this particular update?
So that leaves me at this point. If I install this update will it limit my options as for Odin, custom firmware, etc?
So all that Samsung tells me can be found here: http://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-N950U1/ATT/doc.html
Thank you in advance for any and all assistance. It is always appreciated.

Have not seen any issue's so far on this OTA.
Head over to sammobile dot com, to read more.
In short:
"In addition to the November security patch, the update brings improved performance in the Calendar, Gallery, Voice Recorder, and Reminder apps, a new secure Wi-Fi function, and a fix for an unexplained Samsung DeX error. The firmware version is N950FXXU1BQK6, and at upwards of 840 MB, is among the biggest OTA updates that don’t bring a major Android version upgrade that we have seen"

Safe? It will, at least temporarily, block any attempt at root. If you're running a Substratum theme, it's best to uninstall it before running the update, based on the experience of those who got the October update. Do not reinstall apps that were backed up while running the theme.

Thank you. I am going to Sammobile right now to read more about it.

Is it designed to block rooting?

Can you still do the WiFi hotspot trick. Where you try to sing into a hotspot with wrong password then turn on hotspot and quickly turn off WiFi. Can't live without that.

The method for rooting Snapdragon phones won't work with updated firmware.

Yes it blocks current SamFail method. The U2 bootloader also cannot be downgraded once installed.

Thank you for explaining. I was wondering if I would be able to rollback to original stock firmware after updating.
How can I get rid of this update and block all future OTAs?
This update is just sitting somewhere in my phone waiting for me to hit that button. What do I do, boot into factory tech mode and clear the cache or something?

What this about? First time I'm hearing about this. Is it like getting free internet or something? If the instructions are anywhere on this website would you be so kind as to post the link here.

Not 100% sure to be honest, but you can maybe try disabling security updates in settings/security menu or maybe disabling/freezing "software update" through an app like TitaniumBackup.
Check the SamFail thread for more info:

I have the unlocked Note from Samsung on Verizon's network. Currently, tethering works straight out the box. Can anyone confirm that this update does not break this? Thanks

That's what I'm trying to hold out for. I have not as of yet experienced any glitches or problems of any kind so I don't see why an update is justified. Just give us Oreo!!! It should've been pre-built into the Note8.

Thank you very much. I'm looking into it for more information now....

Took the update. So far so good. OpenVPN and MS RDP working fine as usual. I was a bit worried as I've read reports of updates screwing up WiFi. I've recently tried these apps on three new Samsung devices and had disconnect issues with all. Oddly, one was a dex using Ethernet - maybe this will fix that, I'll test it. Btw the other devices were a Chromebook pro and a galaxy tab a.

UPDATE ALERT - 19084 firmware released

Watch out if you are planning to root! Currently we do not know if this prevents new root!
New firmware 19084 was released yesterday. It predictably does not mention anything about fixing new root exploit, but anybody who would like to attempt root in future should prevent his Chromecast from updating.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromecast/FOIWpJydK9Y
Thanks for the update! From google source site, it looks like they have yet to patch the new exploit, but until I have a copy in-house to test with, I can not confirm this.
They might purposefully neglect to mention any patch of the exploit in hopes of catching people by surprise....
Munch better safe than sorry for those who are still waiting for a teensy to root
HEADS UP: Seems that google HAS PATCHED the HubCap exploit, but did not post the source for it (to keep us guessing?). Please avoid this OTA if you want root!
How can we see which firmware is currently installed on the chromecast? I connected it back to my tv with router off so it can't update, but I see no info concerning firmware.

I more than suggest. I don't know when it started, but the current Chromecast app will try to force an update before it completes setup.

Screen mirroring is already available...A new update isn't going to change anything about that if you can't mirror already the issue is your phone or tablet not the CCast.
SO if you want to root I suggest not taking the Update until you do, You are not going to gain anything just lose the ability to root.

Yes it is most likely the phone side that is the issue...
The Mirroring works for the devices that support mirroring and it is unlikely to change much in an update.
All the CCast does is receive a stream....the Phone/Tab does the majority of the work by creating the stream and not all units have the ability to do that yet.
Besides...Even if you root the CCast it won't take long for Team Eureka to update the rom to get any goodness the newest update has in it....
So even after you root if there DOES happen to be something that allows your phone to mirror you will get it in Team Eureka Rom soon enough.
If you have a Chromecast "tucked away" waiting to be rooted you might want to turn off WiFi and factory reset it so it has no ability to update when you power it up for rooting later.

It should also be noted, that once you get this update, a factory reset COULD essentially brick the device, or at least give you problems.

AT&T Tab S 8.4 - SM-T707A Lollipop upgrade released

Hey all,
Thought I'd let those of you that have an AT&T Tab S 8.4 know that Lollipop has been released today. Happened to be on the AT&T Software update page here: http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425812&cv=820 and noticed it listed the update.
Manually checked for updates on my tablet, it's downloading now. My 8.4 on AT&T is totally stock.
Downloading now... 1.1GB
manually checking shows nothing for me
Mine wasn't too laggy after the upgrade. But as I know from places like XDA usually a very good idea to do a full system wipe which I did.
What I am most thankful for is there is now an option to remove that Samsung screen that has those Samsung widgets that go full page. Can't recall what it is called. Yeah I know could have got rid of that using a 3rd party launcher in 4.4 but so happy Samsung put option there to disable it finally. To get rid of it, long press blank space like you were going to add a widget, then click Home Screen Settings, then uncheck "Content Home Screen".
Has anyone who rooted with kingroot updated? I'm assuming it'll kill root, just curious if I need to unroot prior, or if the update will still install. I'll post the answer tomorrow after I update.
I've had some Samsung devices which will update while rooted, and some that will not.

Maybe try to adapt the method given by ashyx here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/guide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484

I'm rooted with Kingroot and it's currently downloading the update. If you load Xposed Framework and Wanam Xposed, under Security hacks there's a setting for Fake System Status that allows you to set it to Original.
I'll follow up when the download finishes.
Update: The download completed but the install failed and then got stuck in a boot loop. Ended up having to go to the Samsung place at Best Buy to have them re-flash KitKat. Now the tab is telling me I have to wait 24 hours to check for updates. I'm sure everything will be good now that I'm back on a factory image.

Turn off automatic date and time and manually advance it by a day, and try again.
When they re-flashed KitKat did it wipe your tablet? The OTA failed me when rooted, failed me after un-installing adaway and un-rooting and removing KingUser. I cannot do a firmware upgrade via Kies 3 as it's not available. I cannot do an emergency firmware recover via Kies 3 as it's not soft bricked. I can't find either the KitKat or the Lollipop firmwares online anywhere... Currently I have a tablet, works fine, I did a factory reset (in the back of my mind knew this wouldn't work) that has a custom status and won't take the OTA.
If anyone knows where I can find the KitKat firmware, or the OTA, please let me know.
Or maybe someone could grab the OTA off their tablet after downloading prior to updating and share the wealth with the community???
Has any kingroot user tried triangle away, unroot via kinguser, and take the OTA?
Also just realized that if I can fail the OTA, I can obviously download it... Where do I grab it from if I wanted to flash it with odin or sideload?

OTA came down successfully while not rooted. The reflash at Best Buy didn't wipe it.
As far as I know, the factory images for the AT&T versions aren't available anywhere, or at least I've been unable to find them. They obviously exist because I'm pretty sure the guy at Best Buy used Kies to flash with an image that's available to him from Samsung.
I re-rooted last night in the attempt of using triangle away to clear customs status, then un-rooting. This was odd because device status still shows custom but download mode shows official and Knox is 0.
While I was briefly rooted again I downloaded the OTA in the hopes of copying it to my PC and updating via ADB Sideload... Couldn't find it. If anyone knows where Samsung puts these I'll grab it and post it to share.
im not rooted, performed a factory reset, and my device still doesn't see any updates. Can somebody provide a link to the ROM?

Turns out there is a imei problem with the tablet that is preventing the download. My imei number is paired with a IPhone 4. Anyway will take a few day to fix then the upgrade should work.
I get the same. I wiped my device hoping for a different outcome, and still no update.
I found this in the thread below.
It is an old tread but I'll comment anyway. SM-T807 is the 3G version while SM-T805 is the LTE version. Both Hardware (CPU/GPU) and comms modules are different. So 805 LTE (which has Lollipop) firmware won't work for 807 (no Lollipop is currently available nor Samsung plans to release soon).

John.
After not being able to take the OTA after rooting, even after un rooting, not being able to find the OTA and sideload (not in /cache), and not able use Kies or Odin I finally took it to the Samsung kiosk at my bestbuy.
They reflashed 4.4.2, didn't wipe anything, and immediately downloaded and successfully installed the lollipop update after getting home and on WiFi.
Just don't mention that you rooted ;')

AT&T Software update as of 7/9/15 - 146.75MB

Not sure what this is yet. Non rooted, stock image.
5.1.1?? Will report back...
Not 5.1.1
No idea as they haven't posted changelog, but hopefully a fix for MicroCell issues everyone is experiencing.
Let us know if you see any changes.
Update downloaded.
Real upgrade from OE2 to OF3. Thats all it says.
@Globalrebel where are you looking for change logs?

This is getting ridiculous, we need an update from 5.0.2, the memory issues I'm dealing with even on XtreStoLite are almost unbearable
Exactly and as updates for 5.1 come out for other carriers we get updates for random att crap that are almost a month old

They know because it says on the Ping Pong Root thread not to update for anything past May 15th as the method for root has been patched
I'm curious if there are any other undocumented changes besides the 2 official changes listed earlier. It feels like a fairly big patch for a fix to an phone location and a kernel security fix.

AT&T Software Update is the main one, but there are a few others - I don't have an AT&T ROM on mine right now to help out, but it's been posted a few times already (I think I even posted those once)
Just freeze att software update. Then it can't even run so no downloads. I got lucky I clicked on update after reading it in Android central but didn't want to install it. Postponed couple of times but somehow it automatically loaded the update process. I was like sh#t. When it booted up it said a problem updating. And then I blocked the updater. My root almost gone lol

[Q] How do you ignore AT&T software update?

Hi guys, up until now, i have been using Package Disabler to ignore the mandatory AT&T updates that are forced unto my unrooted S6E. Unfortunately, package disabler has stopped working for me, and I've also heard rumors that the developer was asked to unpublish the app. If you guys know of any other way to block these AT&T updates, please share your methods to me. If possible I would like to avoid resorting into rooting my phone in order to accomplish this.
The current build/baseband version on my phone is: G925AUCU2AOF3
Due to this unfortunate turn of events, I'm afraid of turning my phone on and having a mandatory AT&T update install only to lower its performance.

My situation is similar to the OP's. I just bought my S6 and it came with OF3. Since there is no root currently, I want to block any new OTAs and wait for a root on OF3.
I'm using the Debloater app from gatesjunior - which apks/packages do I need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
Thanks
Question has been asked many times over many models of the Galaxy S phones...... here's one I found with a quick search from the S5 forum (just ignore that it says use Titanium Backup to do this)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/help/stop-att-software-update-t2862076
Thanks for the response, KryptosXLayer2. I'm aware that this has been asked many times before (and I've had the SII and S4 as well), but it changes for each phone, and I haven't been able to find something specifically for the AT&T S6, so that's why I asked as I wanted to be sure I got the right files. I took a look at the post you linked to, but the software that was given were the names in TB and don't match the apk or package names when filtering in Debloater. So, I'm still unsure which ones I need to disable.

AT&T Galaxy S6 Active will not update

Hi I have a problem from going to 5.1.1 from 5.0.2. I have tried clearing cache,
I have 9gb free,
made sure everything is up to date and enabled,
and have factory reset my phone.
Still doesn't work.
Says something about "dm- verity verification fail" if I go into that developer screen when you hold power, home and volume up right after it tries to update again while loading.
Never has been rooted and have had it for a few months now. Also I was wondering if I could root this phone and just manually update it with custom firmware and forget about Ota updates anymore and be able to run the latest and greatest firmware. I have read in a few places that the new bootloader is un-cracked though and can't be rooted? Thanks.

Greetings,
Thank you for using XDA Assist. To get you the specific help you need, I'm going to move this thread to your device's Q&A forum. Good luck!

#1 didn't show any update but I did go to the samsung kiosk in best buy. He said he has had this problem with phones on other carriers too and he flashed it! Still would like to know if anyone is working on rooting these...

Would love a root, but if the rumors are true, that a new S7 Active version will be announced in Jan and released in Mar, and the new S7 Active (still likely only an AT&T exclusive...) has noticeable improvements, perhaps a root solution for this phone may fall to the way-side.
I'm on the fence about getting an S6, kinda waiting to see if I can get any confirmed specs for a new S7.
Argh... tough...
