G5s Plus or the Lenovo P2? - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

As the title says, I'm confused between the two. Each offers different pros, yet come with their own cons. I'd like to pick one of them based on everything excluding the camera.

Iam using the G5S Plus Dual Sim (XT1805).
Actual using one sim. Stock Rom - some bloat apps removed. Battery performance is awesome, at least two days. I am a normal user. Overall performance is quite impressive and gives you enough power. The camera is ok, with enough light, you can make good pictures. 32GB internal space is more i need, but offers multi-boot.
I switched from a htc one m8 (2014).

P2 is better featured than G5s like bigger battery, nfc (if you're in us) or magnetometer (everwhere else) but P2 doesn't get any more updates or Moto nifty gesture and actions. UI wise, P2 is also almost stock Android. So it's really up to you to choose.

Ok- So I am not getting the advantage of the MOTO X

Hello,
I have the HTC One M8 and a MOTO X. I know the X provides the Nexus like experience, but the One seems to be faster and better constructed and generally faster. From what I can tell the screens are about equal thought the X is warmer. They both have 32 GB storage but the One has Micro SD. I did not have the original X but I am not blown away by the user expereince of the X, what am I not understanding about how great this phone is supposed to be?
Thoughts?
Thanks,

I can't say about the new one yet. But I know by the old one. I left my nexus 5 for dead once I started using this phone made me go from a nexus 5 32gb to a 16gb motox I still won't switch back and I have one gig of storage left.
I haven't felt the new one yet. But this phone just feels right in your hand. But I've heard the m8 is sort of like that too.
Might sound stupid but the touch less control is something that becomes the way it should be. Would be weird to not have it but I see Google doing this eventually in all phones.
The one thing that I would really go crazy with is ..this phone wakes up when you pull it out a your pocket. I haven't touched the power button to wake in 8 months. I grab my wife's Iphone expecting to wake.
Really I think how apple amazes millions with some great features, design with low specs and great feel and usability of hardware and software is what the moto x has that maybe other androids do not. You just have to use it for a while and you will see. I hope th new one isn't to large for the feel factor or that will be negated and the software will not be worth it. It is the whole package combined that makes this phone great. Only the voice recognition is the best of any phone otherwise it does nothing the best but everything combined it is the best overall.....oh yeah in my op lol
the X is about just "refining" Android.
I also had a Nexus 5 and once I played with an X I bought one and put my Nexus 5 up for sale. I just got a new 2014 and software wise find it more refined. The only issue I have is that the 2013 was already so good and smooth the 2014 does not really add much, if anything, to it.
The X is for those that want Nexus experience, flagship specs, and great hands free controls. I get by with an 8GB device, if i could but 16 is as small as you can get. I feel that ANYONE that uses an SD card is just poor with data management. Odds are most of your music you load up you don't actually listen to regularly. if you are keeping FULL TV seasons on your phone to watch unless you are traveling thats pointless, you can just load a few eps to get through that day. Same with multiple movies with high bitrates.
I have all the apps I need, and I still have 10GB left. I have 3GB Data, that I pay $64/mo for and I NEVER go over it and I stream Google Music and Pandora in my car when driving to clients all the time. I also get company email and Gmail. I update apps over Mobile Data, and download Podcasts. My photos auto upload to g+. I tether my laptop on occasion. I can not see how anyone can go over 3GB unless you are also torrenting or doing a LOT of social media videos and photos. The closest I have come is 2.7GB in the last 18 months.
People say they need storage because they don't have Unlimited Data. You don't need unlimited data. You just need to not be stupid with your data. I know people that pay more than I do (by like $25-30) and don't get the same amount of data I do just because they refuse to show around carriers.
/rant
I agree with that too about storage. I've felt the M8 and it does feel very nice in my hands but I hate HTC Sense. It ruins the Android experience for me.

how is the One M8 faster than the Moto X? both use the same chipset. i feel the Moto X is just as fast or faster than most of the skinned Android phones. for the screens, both are using different technologies. each will have their pitfalls
Moto X is mainly for those who want some added (useful) functionality on top of stock Android. if you like Sense, then stick with the One. if you want stock with some added things, Moto X. if you want just stock, then Nexus is the way to go. choices are good :good:

I do like Sense- it has gotten so much better. I also love Nexus because of the all the development, so maybe I will give it a few more days to make a decision. I have the bootloader unlocked and root, so I know some good thing will be coming from the talented devs.
As someone who has owned both my opinions differ.
I find the Moto X 2014 much much faster and smoother than the M8. Even with the M8 running AOSP. ActiveDisplay is just awesome, its a little thing but it really is useful. The Moto X 2014 is easier to hold/use, and doesn't have a ridiculous power button located in a ridiculous spot. (My biggest dislike of the M8). While the M8 structure is beautiful and feels great, I didn't find it comfortable to hold/use. Sense 6 is beautiful but I didn't find it offered any actual value or features that I cared about or ever actually used.
Not that it takes much but the Moto X camera, while still lagging behind, is still far better than that crap 4up camera that HTC loves so much.
The Moto X does not really shine in any one way, it doesn't leap out in the crowd, its just a great phone to use.
Motorola seems to be the only Android manufacturer who actually cares about user experience. I downgraded from a Nexus 5 to the 2013 Moto X last year because it offered a much better experience. I upgraded to the 2014 Moto X this year and am not waiting for the Nexus. If you've never owned a Moto before you won't realize everything you are missing.
Moto X offers the following improvements for me:
-Active Display - HUGE plus if you've never used it
-Touchless Controls - I use this constantly in the car and at home when I'm working
-Moto Assist - great for when I am in meetings all day to silence my phone and auto reply
-Shake to activate camera - very underrated feature but if you're trying to take photos in a snap it's extremely handy
-Wave to wake phone to check notifications and silence calls - again underrated but works beautifully
-Bluetooth unlock when my 360 is connected so I don't have to type in my PIN
-Moto Migrate to keep all of my existing data seamlessly
-As close to stock as possible with these helpful additions
Also other considerations:
-Exceptional build quality - although M8 also has extremely good build quality
-Motorola is one of the only companies that actually pays attention to cell signal and reception and is superior, my Moto X 2013 hands down had better signal than my N5, 2014 is great for signal too, HTC Notoriously bad for signal
-Audio noise cancellation - the sound quality when recording and on a call is much better than other phones I have used. Moto X 2013 was FAR superior to N5 in this regard, I don't have a M8 to compare but consider it
-FAST upgrade time, we will be one of the first to get Android L - This is huge for me
I suppose a good answer will be when android L comes out, X should have it quick (of course lenovo taking over and Soni gone could change that) whereas HTC will probably be 6+ months behind because they have to retro fit the junkwear onto the new OS.
Who the hell wants skinned android L????! Not me!
Previous phone: Nexus 5
Current phone: Pure version Moto X on T-Mobile network
Comparison:
Con: touch sensitivity does not seem as good. Using swipe gestures in Nova Launcher I never had to repeat a swipe on the Nexus 5, but I occasionally do on the Moto X. I noticed there seems to be more of a lag when scrolling the screen on the Moto X. I set the phone to use ART instead of Dalvic and it seemed to help some, but the touch response still has a perceptible delay.
Pro: Voice command works well, even in noisy environments
Reception is improved
Speaker phone loudness and clarity is multiple times better. It is good and plenty loud.
IR sensors and software work great.
Screen is a little bigger, which I like.
Voice command to toggle silent mode is handy.
Battery life seems the same, or maybe slightly better.
UPDATE: I switched from Nova launcher to the Google Now Launcher, and the touch lag I mentioned in the Cons section above is no longer noticeable.
Con: I think the handoff from WiFi to cellular is not a smooth transition. The phone tries to hang on a weak WiFi signal to long before it switches to cellular, and I do have 'avoid poor connections' selected in the WiFi advanced options.

Thanks for all the comments. I had not given the X a real chance so I did, and I do love the active display and voice commands- very unique, good expereince, but HOW could Moto put a 2,300mah battery in this? The battery was flat by 2:30 under moderate use. I guess we need a UV kernel and some good battery tweaks ASAP.
I do really like the screen too, the blacks are so black, and the colors pop, almost too much... And it does just feel good in your hand.
I will give it a few more days to see how battery life occurs...
thanks,
I just picked up the new x an I also have the m8. I'm really liking the x so far never had anything besides HTC I still have my m8 tho.
Edit I been on mine all day now it has not got hot at all. Running real smooth
To comment on the battery life. Yes it's not AMAZING, probably my only complaint with the device, but it works as advertised. With fairly heavy use my first full day of charge, everything turned on, here was my usage pattern:
-Bluetooth, Wifi, and Location On
-Approx 11 hours connected to Wifi and about 8 hours using 4G
-Google Now On
-Brightness Auto
-Streaming music for approx. 1.5 hours
-GPS in use for approx. 20 min
-Screen on time just over 3 hours
-Total time until battery died almost 19 hours
That for me is much better than my original X. I have to charge the phone once a day anyway. That type of usage pattern is moderate to heavy and lasted from when I woke up to when I went to bed.

This is promising to me. I have been only htc flagship phones since day 1. On my m8 I can got 26 hours heavy use from full to dead. An I was worried bout battery on this phone but everything else I read made me jump ship an try the new moto. I'm really liking the phone since I picked one up yesterday...

[Q] Moto X or Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

I like stock android and moto features but it looks like the z3 is better when it comes to specs. which one do you prefer?
Better in terms of what specs? Both have the same Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor, same amount of RAM. The Moto X in its favor has a 1080p AMOLED display, a larger 5.2in screen, stock android, and customizability. The Z3 Compact in its favor has a slightly larger battery (2600 mah vs 2300 mah), a greater battery life, a microSD slot, and a waterproof (vs splash resistant) design. All I will say is that if you're looking for updates, there's no question that the Moto X wins out as it is already on 5.0. The Z3 Compact will likely receive it early next year. There's also the fact that the Moto additions such as Display, Assist, and Voice aren't available anywhere else. Your choice depends on whether you prefer battery life, a waterproof design, and a microSD slot above stock android, fast updates, hardware customizability, and a higher resolution screen.

yes but which phone do you think has a better investment, future proof and overall?
The Moto X is in another league compared to the Z3 Compact, build quality alone sees to that.
A better comparison would be with the Z3 proper.
If by future proofing you mean updates, then there's only 1 answer to that: Moto X. You've seen by now how quickly the Moto X got the updates to KitKat and to Lollipop. Sony can never be as fast as that simply because they choose to put their UI on the phone, which, unless it undergoes some plastic surgery when their 5.0 update rolls out, looks extremely boring and dated. I've had a Z2 before, and trust me, its UI got tiring after a while, especially when you see all the little places where the system lags in comparison to stock android (try pressing on the multitasking button with the X and the Z2/Z3 side by side, you'll see what I mean).
I used the Z3c for about 10-days before I sold it and got my leather backed Moto X. The Z3c is a decent phone, but it feels so delicate, and the super slippery glass front and back made me feel like I was going to drop it all the time. The speakers are horrible, supposedly from the waterproofing, but they sounded very muffled. My Moto X, even compared to 1st gen, has a wonderful sound quality, and is plenty loud enough. The flaps on the side (Z3c) are not very attractive, and it seemed like over time would get very tedious to use. One cool feature though is the addition of the magnetic charging port (like on a MacBook), but it was pretty fiddly to get it to seat right, and didn't play well with my car dock. The Z3c screen is really bright and clear and could easily be seen in direct sunlight, and the camera is leagues ahead of the MotoX despite having dozens of camera filter modes to wade through. On paper the Z3c comes out ahead of the Moto X, but as far as usability, ease of use, feel in the hand, build quality, and pure(ish) android the Moto X is a much better phone. And, one more thing, one you get used to the Moto's active display, driving mode, and always listening stuff it's really hard to live without.
Pretty different phones. I think the compact is more similar to the 2013 Moto X (screen size and resolution). I would take a compact over a 2013 X. The new 2014 X compares much more closely to the full Z3. I looked at a Z2 a while back, and it felt a lot bigger in the hand than the 2014 Moto X. I don't think it was really that much bigger, but the appearance in the hand was. If you are all in the Sony experience, have a PS4 and all that, then the Z3 could be cool - but for a straight-up clean Android experience phone, I would go Moto X. Now, the Z4 looks to be pretty cool with an 810 and Sony's new camera hardware. About 6 months out.
I happen to own both a Moto X and a z3 compact. I love love love my z3 compact. Best battery life I've seen on any phone that I have owned and I own at least 6 or 7 different phones per year. Both the Moto X and the z3 compact feel really good in the hand. I was using my z3 compact as my daily driver until 5.0 dropped in the Moto X. I will be switching back to it when lollipop drops on it. I really did not expect to like the device as much as I have. I raved about the device so much to my co-workers at swappa that two of them went out and bought the phone. The skin on the sony is not bad at all either. I think both are great phones but I will admit my z3 compact is my favorite. I buy and sell phones all the time and my z3 compact is one I don't even consider selling.. And I love the device so much that I got square trade on it just in case something happens to it.. My 2 other current phones and any of my tablets do not have square trade.. Only my z3 compact. If running stock Android and the latest version of Android is important to you then I would say stay with the Moto X. If you want a perfect size device, with a great camera and don't mind waiting for Sony for lollipop and want a phone with amazing battery life (with heavy use I get over a day and a half with very minimal usage I've gotten 4 days!) I really am impressed with that device.. Much more than I thought I'd be. You can't really lose either way honestly.

So My Moto X 2013 is getting old...

My Moto X 2013 is getting old. Too slow, not enough RAM.
But it's such an amazing phone, I cannot find anything to replace it!
There a few things I cannot give up:
- Size: all the new phones are too big. I want to be able to use it with my thumb in one hand. I need something no wider than 2.75" (70mm)
- Active Display: I cannot go back to pushing a button to turn on my phone and see alerts.
- Twist for Camera: Simply awesome. A dedicated button would be fine.
All I really need is:
- More RAM
- Faster CPU
- SD slot
- As pure as possible Android experience (or possibility to root and flash CM)
I'd also really prefer an AMOLED display. Once you get use to those blacks, there's no going back. (And the ambient display.)
Contenders:
- Nubia Z9
- OnePlus X
- Galaxy A5
- Galaxy Alpha
- Xiaomi Mi4C
- Asus Zenfone 2
- Huawei P8 Lite
- Moto G 3rd gen (too big really)
- BQ Aquaris M5
- Sony z3c
- Sony z5c - seems great but too expensive.
Note: I live in Spain, so US Carrier compatibility is a non issue.
I'm with you, and on Verizon so my choices are even more limited!

My friend, you and I are in the same boat with identical needs. Im going with Moto X Pure for Verizon
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Your width requirement is going to limit you significantly. I'd say that the Nexus 5X or one of the new Moto phones (X Pure, Turbo 2, Maxx 2) are going to be your best bet given your list. The Motorola devices should have the twist to camera, the 5X has double tap power for camera.
i've been eyeing the Turbo2 for a while. I believe that root has been achieved on that device, which is a key requirement for me.
but otherwise, my Moto X still has plenty of RAM and runs as fast as it did when I first got it 2 years ago. my lone gripe is battery life - which deteriorates over time anyways.
I'm also in agreement with the OP. I can't work up any interest in a phone bigger than 4.0 ->4.7 that can be bootloader unlocked, and has some way to wake the thing without wearing out buttons. There aren't many around anymore despite it having once been a popular form factor.
I happened to get ahold of a really great deal (~100 bucks or so) Galaxy Alpha 850m from Brazil. I got it for a little work project but realized it was just about everything I like despite being out of production. I'm currently using both, one for personal , one for work. The Alpha is unlocked & rooted, a perfect size, but has the octa-core exynos so no "tap or wave-to-wake" functionality I'm aware of. With a slightly extended battery, it lasts at least 2-3 days and fits in any pocket I've got. I can't figure out why they took the Alpha out of production so soon since it was only out in mid-2014.
My Verizon xt1060 dev is a great phone as well, but now that they're raising the rate on my old grandfathered unlimited plan, I'm losing interest, and having been using either t-mobile or att with the Alpha, I'm happy with the coverage (well, on any ATT related plan anyway), and on t-mobile for my neighborhood or town. When the price raise goes into effect next year, I'll give up on Verizon for awhile, if not for good.
Battery-wise re 2013: I'm only noticing the usual 5.1 battery complaints. Yeah, it uses about 40% more battery than 4.4.4 did, but after some tweaking, it's surprisingly good. I get ~1.5 -> 2 days regarardless of how I use it, but I'm not a "watch movies on my phone" sort of user (or a gamer). I switched it back awhile ago to 4.4.4 for a couple of weeks and realized the battery was still in fine shape, but I do like 5.1 better so that's where it is.
I'm waiting until someone puts out a good <=4.7" phone again before getting anything else. I can't deal with those Buick sized phones.
One plus X or Z3C are your best bets.Although I don't think you'll see big difference in performance, nor much difference from the extra gig ram either.

Moto X4 One with Project Fi? Current S8 owner.

I currently own the Galaxy S8 and played a few weeks with an Essential phone as well.
Both are fast and premium devices.
However, I am considering switching to Fi because I can see some benefits when traveling, plus I am most of the time connected to Wifi.
I really dislike what Google did with the Pixel phones, overpriced and (in my opinion) ugly compared to the Nexus line, so I don't want to get a Pixel phone.
The Moto X4 looks pretty competitive, the only cons I can see is the processor. I can even sell my S8 and get some extra money.
Has anyone been able to use both phones S8 & Moto X4 as a daily driver?
On a daily and regular use, do you see much difference? Speed, features, battery?
I don't really use it for gaming so, that's not a problem for me.
Is it worth to give it a try or sounds like a stupid idea?
Thank you guys.

The X4, while a nice phone with excellent build quality has three things against it--internal storage size, at least with the 32GB, as much is taken up due to the way the OS is stored, the processor and the camera. On the plus side, you have Project Fi (although some people have soured on it, view the reddit forums if you want more details), although this includes Hangouts integration, so you can for example text from your computer without even having your phone on you, or make and take calls. The battery life is also excellent. You WILL need a case for it, the phone is simply too slick to use without one. I haven't used an S8 at all, but I am personally happy with the X4, as is my wife.
I have the X4 on Fi, and my coworker got the Pixel 2 on Fi. I don't think the Pixel on Fi makes any sense: Why would I buy a $900 phone so I can have a $30/month cell phone bill? Anyways, there is a difference between the two, but it's a lot smaller than the price tag difference would suggest.
The X4 is very nice. Battery life is great. Built quality is great. Software is near stock Android. I haven't even rooted it yet, as I see no need.
It's not the fastest CPU, but I wouldn't need the fastest CPU if I had the option. It's plenty fast as is. I play a few games here and there, and it holds up great. Only slowdown is when I'm taking a LOT of pictures in a short amount of time, and I'm using HDR+ (see below). But even then, it's only a quick second before it's done, and I'm off to taking more pics.
As mentioned above me, there are drawbacks. The 32GB storage is literally 50% taken up by the system. There is only 16-18GB for your data. I use Google Photos, so my pics are backed up, and I have Google Play Music download my library to my 64GB sd card, so it doesn't bother me that much. I think I still have 8-9GB free, and my SD card is only like 1/4 full.
The camera is not great, at least at first. The stock Moto Camera is the worst camera software of any phone I've owned in the past several years. But, it's not a hardware issue, it's a software issue. Download a modded Gcam apk, turn on HDR+, start using portrait mode, and the camera is actually really good. It won't win any contests, but it's VERY good, and I've never it crap out on me.
There are a few minor inconveniences that separate this phone from a phone twice it's price, none of which bother me enough to spend hundreds of dollars extra to fix. The speakerphone is only mono, and comes from the top of the device. Not a big deal when you're on the phone, but watching Netflix in bed is noticeable.
I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking at it. It's great.
Great to know!
Thanks both for your answers!
I just ordered it today from the project Fi page and even got a $20 off discount on my next billing cycle (via referral code).
If the phone is acceptable, I might consider selling my S8.
I agree, makes no sense to me to offer super expensive phones for a service that is supposed to save you a few bucks.
Thank you!
We dont have project fi here(UAE) but i am using moto X4 more than a month.. Device is very slippery and glass protection on the back side so sensitive..Minor hit can bring huge scratch on your phone body..

Moto x4 or Moto Z?

I have the 3/32gb version of the x4. I have the option to get a brand new Moto Z with 4/64gb which as you know is also AMOLED screen and Snapdragon 820 processor with adreno 530. However it's a single camera. Should I do this?

The problem of Moto Z in my opinion is not having IP68 protection and the fingerprint sensor is that poor square with no gesture support. Otherwise it's a great gadget, I heard this Phone got a great price on Gearbest now.
64 GB vs 32 GB, new battery...
So I got to own both. Sticking with the x4.
On paper the Z sounds better. But the processor slows down significantly when using multiple apps. I would even compare it to the new gen of Snapdragon 4xx series. The 64gb doesn't mean much because a large chunk is taken up by the software. The ram is an extra GB at 4 vs. the 3 on the x4, however running all the same apps, the x4 had much ram left open for use than the Z did. Ram management was terrible. Other than that, the camera was the worst in low light I've seen in a long time and bad in general. The battery was the worst and it also gets really hot really fast. Lack of fingerprint sensor gestures. The screen was very nice and vibrant but the x4 screen was also very good, just not quite as good but the no reason for me to keep the Z over the other cons. I wanted to get in detail with my experience because I got to use both extensively and there is no real world comparison anywhere on the internet other than the spec sheet which sounds good in favor of the Z, but it's definitely not in real life. Even the quadrant scores were way higher on the Z, but actually the phone felt useless with a few apps open.
