Flash OOs Oreo Stable release - OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

Folks,
Seeing alot of comments about bootloops, etc after trying to install the new stable OOS Oreo release.
I went through the same issue myself and found the following method to work best.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm not responsible if this does Any type of damage or issues to your device.
Be sure to backup all you need to back up to your PC.
1. Complete wipe of phone.
2. Flash the stock recovery that was used for reverting from Oreo Beta to Nougat. http://oxygenos.oneplus.net.s3.amazonaws.com/OP5_recovery.img
3. Wipe everything again.
4. Sideload new Oreo release. (Credit @HatRiGt, https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NW5zyUOL6bWgUWozFGLiutzud203npKp)
5. Reboot to bootloader and flash the Chinese TWRP. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1AKbC4HB0h4rEldQUowWGdyM4iYBVV--7
6. Reboot to recovery and flash Magisk. I flashed the 14.6 version and haven't found any issues yet. (https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4366826&d=1513897917)
7. Boot phone.
I cannot promise this will work for you, but it has done the job for me.
Running Oreo Stable with Magisk 14.6 and restored all apps from Titanium Backup that I saved on my PC.

I highly suggest blu_spark TWRP instead of chinese one, and i think this method is ONE of the other working way

Couldn't get mine to work with blu spark, hence why I had to use chinese

Link for Chinese twrp please

Thank you very much, work for me

Make a video of it please

New Magisk v.15.

Added to OP.

All is well. And with google Drive almost all data is back.

Nice & easy workaround..
Step 5 has to be : install TWRP on fastboot mode...

@hallo dare
Any chance you can make a very detailed video about this process?

You should try changing the TWRP

If you have problems with adb sideload:
Boot into fastboot and install stock .
Unlock/Lock your Phone and unlock it again. Locking will wipe the whole phone.
After this you can make a clean installation.
Reboot to bootloader and flash the Chinese TWRP and boot to Recovery.
Install the oreo.zip file.
Reboot to System.
Make your Setup: WLAN, GMail Account aso.....
After all boot to Recovery and install Magisk

Very easy, put oreo zip file in the root folder, backup all data, flash stock recovery, boot with stock recovery, wipe cache, upgrade internal..., Select oreo zip file and flash it, then back and select wipe, select erase every thing and reboot. Done.

Thank you so much! I finally got it working. I needed to do a factory wipe and skip the magisk installation but it worked!
Cheers!

Magisk won't flash on stock recovery, if that's the reason you had to skip installing it.

No I installed the TWRP and flashed magisk. It refused to boot so I factory swiped it and all was good. Now I have to figure out how to install magisk without getting into bootloop.

OTA update with root and TWRP?

hi! my OP3T is rooted and have a custom recovery (TWRP). now i get an ota update. i have read somewhere in this case its necessary to flash the ota manually in TWRP because i will lost root after this and if i flash it in TWRP i can after ota update flash superSU and will have no problems after reboot the phone.
i have tried this but get "Error 7" in TWRP while flashing ota update. isn't it possible at this way? what is my mistake?
thanks a lot for help and pardon for my bad english!

You should still receive OTA notifications with root. And it should detect you have root, and will download the full update zip, and it will install with TWRP.
Otherwise, you can manually download the full zip update from Funk WIzard's thread which he linked in Post #2 above (which also has detailed instructions on how to update when rooted and TWRP installed).
Works like a charm with magisk 13.6
I just did it with my OP3t and was super easy.
1) download update.
2) go to hidden folder .Ota
3) move zip file to another folder
4) put Magisk in the folder, too
5) reboot to recovery, flash ROM, then Magisk
6) wipe dalvik/cache and reboot
Edit: updated following testing of redpoint73's correct advice

As long as you already have TWRP installed (which is the situation we are talking about) you just need to flash the OTA update zip, then flash Magisk.
Magisk prevents TWRP from being over-written (replaced) with stock recovery. In other words, you don't need to flash TWRP, since TWRP is already there.

Yes.
Although I will caveat that with my rule of thumb: "hope for the best, prepare for the worst". In that a "dirty" flash of an update is often possible (saving your a lot of work setting up the device again). But you should still be prepared to wipe and do a "clean" install if you run into any problems. So back up your data, by your method of choice, before you try to update.
In particular, for a major update (such as OOS 4.x to 5.x) a clean install (default wipe in TWRP - data, cache and Dalvik) is typically advised.
Shall?? You used the word 'shall' properly in context? Kudos to the school system (I here assume India's) you attended, and to you for paying attention, using the 'King's English' in it's most proper form.

Downgrade from OOS 4.1.5 to 3.5.x

I am having serious battery drain on any OOS 4.x.x rom. I used to have very good battery life in 3.5.2. can anyone give me a proper step by step guide to downgrade? Battery is a huge issue for me.
i have my own steps that i found it by my self but it will earse all ur data so backup ur data to pc.
here are the steps :
1. make sure u have unlocked bootloader, custom recovery (twrp) i prefer use blu_spark twrp latest version
2. pur ur 3.5.x firmware in internal storage
3. boot to twrp recovery and do a clean wipe(dalvik, data, internal, system, cache)
4. flash ur 3.5.x firmware. it will take a long time just wait it
5. reboot to system, ull get a no os installed warning in twrp just reboot it(swipe)
6. when the devices boot up ull get a enter password for decrypt data. just reboot to bootloader
7. when u in fastboot mode connect ur devices to pc
8. use op3/op3t toolkit to flash twrp from fastboot u can find the toolkit here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/development/toolkit-oneplus-3t-toolkit-unlock-t3507729
9. then wait when it boot to twrp and when it boot up wipe data, internal storage only
10. reboot to system. done
sorry for my bad english. i hope it works
Ok that sounds easy. Reboot to recovery after flashing ROM retains the recovery I guess. Do you have any suggestion of custom kernel for 3.5.x ? Also i have the latest twrp. Will is allow me to flash 3.5?

Thank you guys. It wasn't really tough. Flashed OOS 3.5.4 full zip. Rebooted to recovery then rebooted to system. However it was bootloop at the start then I restarted and flashed SuperSU zip, it booted up. Don't know why SuperSU is required to boot up. However I am not getting the support for Magisk. I tried cleaning up SuperSU and then flashing the Magisk zip but it didn't work. Any advice ?

[BETA] TWRP 3.1.1 for Mi A1

Hey,
TWRP 3.1.1 Touch Recovery beta version is released for Xiaomi Mi A1.
Download - Go to downloads tab
Update:
1. Magisk v13.4 is working fine.
Workaround for Xposed:
Xposed is not installing through TWRP and when tried with App, still it's giving errors. So below is the temporary solution till we get a permanent one.
1. Don't flash TWRP. Just boot into it from bootloader by using command - fastboot boot recovery_name.img
2. Flash latest SuperSU zip.
3. Reboot to System.
4. Your phone will be rooted now and install Xposed through app.
Important:
1. Don't flash it, just boot into it.
2. If flashed, re-flash the latest stock boot image.
Instructions:
1. Download the twrp image and twrp installer zip
2. fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-tissot-beta.img
3. Flash twrp-installer-tissot-3.1.1.zip
4. Reboot to recovery
Flash Magisk v13.4 built for Pixel devices by @Goodwin_c. Available in the downloads tab.
Issues:
1. Flashing SuperSU will break TWRP. SuperSU will work, but TWRP will be gone.
2. Xposed won't flash without modification.
Future update:
1. Make TWRP and SuperSU to co-exist
2. Compatibility with Xposed and Latest Magisk

We are not responsible for anything that may happen to your phone as a result of installing custom recoveries, roms and/or kernels. you do so at your own risk and take the responsibility upon yourself.

I could see in Pixel forums about flashing twrp. It has options to back up a, b partitions or even both. Atm no access to computer, will need to check whether urs allow us the same.

Surprise!!!
Booted TWRP? But isn't temporary? Sad ?.
But don't worry, I have created a zip, ahh actually ported a zip ?, to flash TWRP permanently ?.
But please do note that I haven't tested this personally yet, as I'm in a bus, traveling right now.
But if guys have guts, then go ahead, & try this, & please report back .
Instructions:
Boot TWRP & just flash this zip from TWRP. That's all...

Hi!
I just want to post my experiences so far.
TWRP booted up fine, also backup and MTP works.
I tried flashing magisk v14.2, which's installer told me the B slot is currenly active etc. Flashed without any problem. But rebooting the device I got bootloop.
Restoring the boot image from the backup made the device back to booting state.

Somehow Magisk is not yet working in Mi A1. Either flashed through recovery or other method, getting bootloop and other issues.

Oneplus 6 Bootloop after flashing Magisk over Oxygen OS Beta 11

Here is what I have done:
1. Boot into TWRP recovery
2. Flash OOS 9.0.3 Beta 11 followed by TWRP and Wipe Dalvik Cache
3. Reboot Successfully to android
4. Boot back into TWRP and flash Magisk 18.0 (I also tried 18.1, same result)
5. Bootloop
I've done this multiple times, each time I was able to get back into android before flashing Magisk.
Thank You for your help, much appreciated.
This might go without saying but after flashing Magisk are you also wiping Dalvik?

So I finally made it work by flashing with "Blue" TWRP. I still don't really understand the difference between the official TWRP. Whiel in loop looping after installing magisk, I went back to TWRP, flashed Blue TWRP and it booted. Wen't back intro Blue TWRP and flashed Magisk 18 (Not 18.1, thought that might have been why) and it worked. It confused me because I have successfully flashed magisk with the other TWRP before so I really don't know what fixed this.
Thank you for your help. I think I flashed me rom over 30 times yesterday getting this to work.

Update to DP4 from Official 9.5.11 with root and without data loss

Tried and tested method to update to DP4 with twrp and root working.
If you update to DP4 directly before installing twrp you will be stuck without twrp.
You need USB pendrive and otg for it.
Steps
1. Update your phone to latest available official version.
2. Boot to fastboot and install TWRP (of course you need boot loader unlocked)
3. Flash DP4 from Thumbrive (keep it in external storage only)
4. Flash Recivery TWRP.zip from thumb drive
5. Reboot recovery
5. Flash DP4 again followed by Twrp.zip
6. Reboot recovery and flash magisk and any other mods you need.
7. Reboot
If you followed every steps correctly you will have working TWRP and root on DP4.
I am using it since DP2 and never had issues.
Note. Since Q diesnt allow twrp to read internal storage you will need usb drive for flashing mod also.
I have uploaded a video with DP4 Features if you want to know about its features.
New features
1. Volte working
2. Names of themes changed
3. System UI settings changed
4. Fingerprint faster
5. Overall phone is faster now.
Removed google assistant swipe shortcut.

You need to use msm tool for reverting to stock
Or Stock reset rom for downgrade.

Is there any way to downgrade without MSM tool? I have a Mac. Local update doesn't work. Thanks for the reply.
Try MP version from DP Version package via local upgrade.
This will be available once the official thread is created by oneplus.
Or you may try DP to MP version for DP3

I was able to install twrp and magisk on dp3, i think you can do it with dp4 aswell.
I just fastboot flash boot twrp.img , it says slot a ok, slot b fail.
So i switched active slots and reboot, which boots to twrp installed on other slot. While in twrp (which cannot access data) i installed twrp through adb, switched active slot and installed twrp again. Same for magisk 19.4 installer.
After installing twrp and magisk to both slots i switched active to B and rebooted, which took me to rooted dp4.
Hope that made any sense
Oh and while in twrp, i used twrp installer (latest) to install twrp to both slots.
why do you possibly need to flash the rom and twrp TWICE? shouldn't the usual upgrade process for a rom if you are already rooted still work?
Flash the Q rom
flash twrp
reboot to recovery
flash magisk?
don't understand the reason to flash both twrp and the rom 2 times as posted in the instructions
regardless, i followed the exact steps and it didn't work for me. i boot to a plain black screen and can't get past it. any ideas?

Can you elaborate on step 2? Do we flash twrp.zip the same as the other steps? or do we flash the twrp-installer?
1. Downloaded the 9.5.11 update from Oxygen Updater (DONT REBOOT)
2. Went to Settings\System\System Update and click on the wheel on upper right corner.
3. Select Local Upgrade, then install the update (DONT REBOOT)
*DO NOT REBOOT after applying the update.
4. Remove Magisk modules that may cause problems (Call Recording is one of them)
5. Launch Magisk, and click the first "install"
6. Choose the "Install to inactive slot (OTA)" option
7. Reboot once completed
8. Download TWRP (from another location) and then go into Magisk and install it, but ***DO NOT REBOOT!!***
9. Install Magisk again. Click Install, then select "Direct Install" option.
10. Reboot
Will this work for DP4 as well????

I don't think so - what I've read on Oneplus page, when you hit restart (after installing magisk) it will reboot and during that erase all data. then reboot again to system. So you cannot restart via system updater,, you need use TWRP to flash it, so i would stick to the 1st post instructions (including 2-times install t ocover both slots). But hey, ican be wrong, you can try and let us know, it would be easier for sure
Is this the only way to get root on DP4?
Simple way
Info for TMobile gm1915 on 9.5.11
You must have magisk installed.
Update through local upgrade method and don't reboot. Then go to magisk select modules hit + and find twrp installer install twrp and then choose install magisk choose install to inactive slot. Then reboot.
Data does not get wiped but fingerprints need to be added again.
Also twrp decryption does not work so best to keep otg USB with you with whatever you may want to flash.
You don't have to flash to both slots it's not necessary but do as you wish.

Hi, I followed all the steps in OP and didnt. using latest twrp and magisk 19.3 (stable)
Now my phone is still starting its first boot about 15 minutes.
Update:
Probably the problem: installed magisk modules.
Anyway after some research default twrp is'nt mounfing local storage. The latest custom TWRP is! So no issues with USB Anymore, just use local storage like u used to do! This is actualy the only way to use the Magisk uninstaller because you need to mount data for uninstalling magisk modules.

Anyway it took me a view hours of testing but now it works smooth! ?
