custom notification for Gmail in OnePlus 3T Orio, Android 8.0 OxygenOs5.0 Won't work - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Tried adding a custom notification to Gmail.
Went the usual way: Settings > Sounds > "Ringtone for messages designated as Default" > local ringtones
The list of available tones on the phone comes up, but when i choose the one I want it wont sound, will appear as "chosen" but wont ring when mail comes in.
Red the threads, turned notification into .ogg, put it in same directory where all the notifications are, set -rw-r-r, and rebooted. now it shows on the list, sound when i choose it yet when Gmail gets a new mail the system will use another notification from the default list.
Any ideas ?

Have a look at Settings> Notifications> Gmail.

When i do that and reach gmail >press "gmail" logo on top> app info> battery> (bottom of scree) battery optimization > text in GRAY "doing optimization to battery" but tapping on the gray text has no reaction.
on the other hand "Gmail" does not appear on the optimization list on settings> battery> battery optimization

Thank you for swift response.
Checked my phone (BtW it's the Hebrew version for Israel) and i have the exact same options marked but the vibration option which i allowed on my phone.
But, when a mail comes in to Gmail the phone chooses a different notification (other then my custom one) and ignores my previous setting

[Q] Text notifications

Hi,
Hopefully a very answer to what should be a simple setting.
I've migrated to the HTC Incredible S from HTC Magic. The trouble is when I receive a text message the icon is shown but the message itself is also shown on screen. I can't find an option to get rid of that.
All I need is the icon showing me I have a message.
Thanks
Go to Mail -> Settings (by pushing the button with the 3 strips) -> More -> Settings -> Notification settings -> Activate Email notifications.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. However, it's not the mail notification I concerned about but text/SMS notification. I just want to disable the message showing on my screen when a new message is received.
I can't seem to find an option to remove this.
I think your barking up the wrong tree there jkolner, sounds like he is taking about the preview of a text message on the lockscreen....
I have looked for a way to remove this myself, and as far as I can tell the only way to stop it is to use a replacement lockscreen like widget locker. seems a bit of a security oversight in my eyes, should be a setting.
Arh... i use GoSMS so i don't have that problem.
The only thing i can find is Message -> Settings (by pushing the button with the 3 strips) -> Settings -> Notifications.
But that don't solve the problem :-(

You don't have Handcent SMS installed by any chance, do you? That will show any new SMS as a pop-up on your screen by default, but you can switch it off in the settings.

If you use the default lockscreen and the default messaging app, when you get a new text it displays the content on the lockscreen. I think this is the problem he is talking about.

Ah, fair enough. I usually customise the hell out of any phone I get as soon as I switch it on for the first time (and I cannot stand the default Messaging app), so I am oblivious to this particular issue.
I have ChompSMS installed. Again this does not provide a setting to disable this kind of notification. I'll have to look into installing a different lock screen.
I'm just surprised that this is not a setting that can be switched off.

Yes, and I believe that is the only option on stock. I checked in messenger settings and don't see any option for changing contact specific notifications. This may be an option in 3rd party messenger apps though.
In Messenger - Open a current SMS thread with the contact you want to change > click 3 dot menu > select "People & options" > change notification sound under General. You can also change the color of the conversation for that contact by clicking the color icon next to their name. These changes remain even if you delete the current thread with that contact.
I haven't found a way to change notifications for GMail.

I saw that option and didn't know if that was for specific contact or system wide. Thank you!

in settings->notifications-> you have to choose on every app what you want to display or not
There is no Notification in UI. Only "Notification panel & status bar" which doesn't have any settings for lock screen. I've found setting "Show detailed notification info" saying show the message details and sender of a notification on the lock screen, which I've disabled, but I'm still seeing who sent me an email on lock screen.

In notification panel & status bar, there is notifications management. in there you will see all your apps. select one , and disable where you don't want it to apear: banners, lock screen etc.
Thanks, found it.
I found this - it's in settings > notifications and status bar > notifications management > tap the cog in top right > Tap 'When device is locked' and choose the option you want
I solved it..
Go to:
1. Settings
2. Notification & status bar
3. Notification management
4. On top of the screen on the right you see a gear(setting icon) tab on it
5. You see an option (when device is locked) open it and change settings!?
i have a problem with this solution. When i did this i hear notification sounds but when i press the power button i cant see which app push me the notification. I just want to see the whatsapp notification on lock screen but not the message itself.

Push notifications disabled

Hello everyone
I turned off all battery saving endeavors that I'm aware of:
1- Settings > battery & performance > power > battery saver > OFF
2- Settings > battery & performance > power > battery use > more > battery saver > turn on automatically > OFF
I noticed that after pressing more, if you select the second option: battery optimization
It lists apps that are either optimized or not optimized (that you can optimize)
I noticed that what's app & gmail were optimized by default.
Maybe that explains why their push notification was turned off overnight?
If you click the settings icon in the power section, it opens a menu. In that menu there's an option:
Clear cache when device is locked:
You have the option from setting it trigger from 1 minute, to 30 minutes or never.
What cache are they referring to?
3- under developer options
I turned off MIUI optimization
I left 'memory optimization' on low
Maybe the 'low' turned off push notifications during the night?
So, how is miui optimization different from memory optimization?
I noticed that this morning I did not receive what's app or gmail notifications till I opened each individual application.
This is a huge issue because I need push notifications to be like their namesake: PUSHED

I don't know 😀
I'll find out throughout the day though, I guess.
I did also turn off:

In the above, I turned off optimization for those apps.
So, now I won't know whether memory optimization in developer options or whether battery optimization will resolve it.
Well. No more disabled push notifications.
Either this resolved it:
under developer options
I set 'memory optimization' on off
Or this
I noticed that after pressing more, if you select the second option: battery optimization
It lists apps that are either optimized or not optimized (that you can optimize)
my wechat/messenger/pebble all work fine.
Gmail for some reason isn't automatically syncing so it doesn't receive the messages.
This is incredibly frustrating.
I read that the gmail app from google play works better than the one in the mi app store.
I uninstalled the mi one, installed the google play one, and that worked.
I also noticed that in my flailing about, I turned on the 'WLAN only" option in settings->sync, which was a bad move. (not my root cause though).
I added everything I tried (and I did a lot) to my FAQ.

Apparently it didn't work.
I slept at about 11 pm
I woke up this morning to notifications from about 1 am
Then when I opened the app, I received messages from 2 am and onwards.
I checked the above settings. They were the same as before.
Very weird. Discomforting experience.
Try my suggestions in the thread to disable MIUI optimizations to reslove late/missing notifications problem:

This is the only one I hadn't done
Let's see
Ok some bad news
Today morning gmail was disabled
It could've spay been disabled yesterday but I didn't notice
I went to bed at 10 pm
Woke up at around 1 am
I found what's app enabled
But gmail was disabled
When I entered gmail, the last email received was a little after 11 pm
Then it refreshed & I saw emails from 12 am & 2 am
I fell asleep again & awoke again at around 4am
Same thing
Then finally woke up at around 6 am and the same thing happened
But since waking up & continuously using my phone, gmail is working fine. Emails are pushed.
It's surprising because I replicated the what's app settings to gmail.
Therefore they should be behaving the same.
Try this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...gcm&pcampaignid=APPU_1_YWdIWJ2-JML3vgSk-6qQDg
Ok
It turned out gmail was not synchronizing
See photo
I restarted that device & that resolved it
Why do you suppose that happened?

I'm not 100% but I think because google framework is installed, not part of the stock system,
that stuff like 'Google play services' has to be "kept active"' (autostarted, etc, etc) the same as wechat/gmail/etc.

I noticed that some themes can disable the push notifications. Perhaps you should try all the tweaks mentioned here when you are in the default theme first? Also, if you are in MIUI 10, some themes show a warning that they are not compatible with Miui 10 and that some parts of the "system" may not work properly. Did you get this message?

Individual per app notification sound

Hello!
I just went from an s8+ to s10+ (1tb if that mathers), i now only have one kind of notification sound for everything, on the s8, snapchat and facebook messenger had other sounds to tell them apart, now everyting just sounds the same...
Is there a way to change sound per app notification? I can't seem to find that setting..
Each notification sound is set inside each app. Or you can just go Settings > Notifications > click "show all" and change the dropdown menu to "All".
You can clikc on any app, and if it has a notification sound setting, you can change it in there too.
Step 1) Navigate: settings>>notifications>>see all>>appYouWant
Step 2) You'll see a list called categories with toggle switches with names like "General Notification" click on these, you can set individual tones in here.
