Security updates? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the sm-t713 variant. Security update of August 2017.
Does Samsung send out regular updates for these Tabs?
I'm coming from a Nexus 7 with an Oreo ROM and was spoiled with monthly updates. TIA.

I came to this site looking to security updates, too. My Galaxy Tab S2 (wi-fi) , Android version 7.0, shows Android security patch level: April 1, 2017. I have tried "Download updates manually" and it says it is up to date. Is there a way to force a newer security update? Do I have to root and install a custom ROM to get this device secure?

Well, the LineageOS builds are up to date in Security Update matters... ^^

I have the 2016 S2 8.0 but my patch level is August 2017. Since the security patches are now at least 6 months behind, I have a feeling we won't be seeing any more. Is yours the 2015 version? Maybe that's why it's even further behind than mine. I will probably flash LineageOS 15.1 at some point although I don't need its features.
BTW, you don't have to root to flash a custom ROM. Just flash TWRP with Odin and then flash a new ROM and Gapps with TWRP. Rooting is optional on LineageOS.

One more question if I may? After installing LineageOS or other custom ROMS, will they get the regular monthly security patches?

LineageOS generally has weekly updates so every 4 weeks or so, the security patch gets updated (as long as the developer maintains the ROM.) Some of the less popular ROMs may not see updates as regularly.

Right now we are @ 05.01.18 as patch level, next one will follow soon
EDIT: Like... now: @ 05.02.18

Possible to get later Android Security patch updates or is Z3c forever insecure?

I'm running SLiMM ROM 2.1 with April 2016 Security Patch level. A couple of questions:
1. Is there any way to update just the Security Patch level without flashing a new ROM?
2. Is there any other ROM with updated Security Patch level I can flash on a device with locked bootloader?
3. Is there any other ROM with updated Security Patch level I can flash on a device with unlocked bootloader?
4. What is the latest Security Patch level available for Z3c(locked or unlocked BL)?
4. What is the latest Security Patch level available for Z3c(locked or unlocked BL)?
On stock .291 the Security Patch is : 1 May 2016
Kernel vulnerabilities can easily be patched and flashed on a phone with unlocked bootloader. Other vulnerabilities living in the system won't be as easy to patch.
forever insecure.
z3 compact is definitely my last android phone, i was tired of this ****.
well that kinda sucks. I really like this phone and wanted to continue to use it as a daily driver, but if i cant get it up to date security wise im not sure i will. Hopefully the Paranoid Android project will release working ROM with up to date security patches(since Z3c seems to be pretty much abandoned by CM). The lack of security updates is a really big concern on Android. It's ridiculous that a consumer who is willing to flash his phone himself cant get updated security.

Personally, I don't care about security updates. That artificial drama created around all these flaws and insecurities that are present in Android are just ridiculous... It's probably one a quadrillion chance our devices will be attacked or anything will happen to them. Just use them like it should be used and nothing wrong will happen. I may over exaggerate the problem but telling you won't use your phone because of the security updates is like telling you can't leave your house because there are so many sick people around and you also may get sick. Just don't be so pedantic, really...

I am using android phones since 2009. I dont care about security updates too but no new updates mean no new features, thats why i am sick about these phones. for example, z3 compact didnt get the nougat update, so i will not be able to try multi window feature, which is very useful. Even an iphone 5 gets latest ios update and features, 2012 model phone, 4 years getting updates.
sec patch level on concept 3636 is 1st july 2016

That's because the iPhone hardware and software stays mostly the same each year. They don't make changes that are big enough to make the previous generation obsolete. So if you want to always run software with features that are 2 years behind the trends on hardware that is a year behind the trends, then go to the iPhone. But don't say you want the latest and greatest and then mention iPhone as the solution.
one year later and SONY forget about us..
The next phone will be from another company..

3. CarbonROM 5.1 with security level Nov 2017
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/cr-5-1-carbonrom-t3529766
Regarding number 3, there are some custom ROMs available, such as:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/orig-development/oreo-unofficial-omnirom-t3696536
The ROM mentioned in the link above contains security patches from Dec 2017. Look at the feature list (what's working and what not) before flashing.
Hope that helps

Does Nexus ROM get security updates added to new versions?

Rooting FireOS 5.3.1 and blocking OTA updates will obviously not get any security updates that are rolled out by either Android or FireOS developers. What about Nexus ROM; same situation or would it get new security patches added to new versions of the Nexus ROM?

ggow has backported up to the November 2016 patches. However, a lot of the new patches are for MM and N, so there hasn't been enough to justify a port. He's pretty busy, maintaining several ROMs, so I can see why he chose not to do some later patches.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear, that at least the high priority security patches get rolled into updated versions of Nexus ROM. Sounds like Nexus therefore provides better security than staying with FireOS 5.3.1 and blocking OTA updates.

Android Security Patch version for Custom ROMs

For custom ROMs, usually the security patch is very old.
Is there a big risk? Also is there ANY WAY to upgrade to latest Android Security patch? All comments and detailed guidance is welcome.

No security patch update / pie update found

Hi, I purchased this phone only last week, and I wanted to update it straight away, but it dowsn't find any updates, either for the security patch or the pie update. ATM I have security patch february 2018 and Oreo 8.0.0. The icon of the security patch is orange with an exclamation mark in the middle, so I believe I should update it. What do I do?

Thanks. For this information
Strange that the servers for N7+ are down just when owners in UK are still waiting for OTA update to Pie or the Nov security patch for Oreo 8.1. HMD are getting worse on the updates, only got the Oct update mid Nov and it is now only 3 weeks to Christmas. Before we know it, it will be 2019 and still no Pie

There is still hope.
I am glad that I sideloaded Pie in Sept (or October, can't remember).

Tried thst, renamed file as per post and started installation but got Installation failure error. Am currently on Oreo 8.1 with Oct security patch so maybe that is the reason the update will not install.

Are the official updates for the X4 already over?

Hi, the last update I have is a security patch from March 2019.

Last one I got was April 1, 2019 on my XT1900-1
The latest update for the is the May 1 security update.
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/payton/official/
Using it on my Android 1 Edition and it's running very well. The March 1 update had a weird bug where the ZRAM would constantly crash slowing the phone to a crawl, no such issues on the latest update rooted with Magisk.

Hi! Is it possible to convert the reteu model (xt1900-7) to an Android 1 edition?
Thanks
I'm have the Android one edition and I just received the July security patch, if that's the updates your see referring too.
On Android One - Fi's channel (but, current sim is on T-Mobile USA) - got a system update 3 days ago and again another (2nd. one) update last night. Here are the screenshots - check & compare yours
PPW* included some system upgrade, where as the other one was a smaller Android security patch.

This could work. For a while I had run my XT1900-7 (RETEU) with XT1900-1 (RETAIL) ROMs. Everything worked except for Google Pay.
Hi, I just got July's update this morning (Moto X4 XT1900-7 RETEU)

Yes, it is possible, but OTA's will not work. Only fastboot flash full ROM every month will work (if full ROM will be available for download...)
I am getting mental with the Moto X4 xt1900-7 Reteu. What about the updates? I got this phone from Amazon Spain, but I am currentlyin Germany, the phone came with the basic 7.1.1 firmware, and got authomatically updated to 8.0.0, OPW27.2, Security Patch Level: 1 December 2017. I bought this because of the small size, and his compatibility with Lineageos, but I need the Android 9.0 Pie before installing Lineageos (this is stated in Lineagerom webpage). The update never come ...... System Update says "Your Device is Up To Date".... Frustating!!! Do you know if there is a version of Lineageos that I can install fromOreo 8.0? or can I download Android Pie for my Moto somewhere? Sorry, getting totally mental Can anybody help me please?

Solved!!! Maybe someone would be interessed about this, just posting my experience
Lineageos installation instructions say the following: Warning: Before following these instructions please ensure that the device is currently using Android 9 firmware.
My Moto X4 XT1900-7 Reteu didn´t get the Android 9 update (still no idea why), it took me 3 days looking for a way to install the update manually with no success. Then I decided to try install lineage-19.1-20221123-nightly-payton-signed.zip anyway and it worked
The process was totally smooth and extremely fast, everything seems to be working perfectly, but I would like you to know that I didn´t install any Gapps, so I can´t confirm if this could create any problem.
Thank you to XDA and all the contributors, this is a fantastic source of info
