[Root][SM-T380][SM-T385] Samsung Tab A 8.0 (2017) Root Tutorial - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Guides, News, & Discus

Method was kindly shown to me by user Mefody in answer to a thread I posted.
Rooting SM-T380/T385 via Magisk Manager APK v.5.5.3 & Magisk 15.2:
1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.
3. Download & install on tablet Magisk Manager APK.
4. Put "boot.img" on SDCARD.
5. Run Magisk Manager, in setiings set "Patch kernel", then setup the Magisk zip (Wi-Fi must be connected to Internet ).
6. When asked, point Magisk Manager to place on SDCARD where "boot.img" saved.
7. After some time You will get "OK".
8. Find on SDCARD file "patched_boot.img". Copy in on PC & rename to "boot.img". Then archive it to "<any name>.tar".
9. Set tablet to download mode & flash above tar-file via AP-slot of Odin-programm.
10. Tablet will reboot & ask to wipe all data to factory's params. Do it... Be noticed, that all passwords, setting, google registry will be wiped.
11. After wiping & rebooting install Magisk Manager APK again... And YEAH!!! You got root!

Thanks for creating this thread. I used the original thread to root my tab, so seeing this as its own thing will be helpful to a lot of people.

Yes... Game Tuner installs & wokrs good.

Could you clarify on these two steps?
1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.

You have to open the stock firmware with an archive manager like WinRar or 7zip. Inside you should find an AP-Block folder. Inside of that should be your boot.img file

Thanks, where can I find the stock firmwares?

Here is another problem
Is OEM unlock in Developer Section required to install patched kernel and TWRP with Odin?
I can't find it even it's updated.

Does anybody know if this rooting method will work with T-585 on Android 7.0 (January 2018 update)? I guess KNOX will be triggered, right?
Yours
WeT-Klb

I say the root is TOTALLY FALSE!!!
I have been waiting for two week and there's no update to enable OEM Unlock option.
I have returned the unit with restocking fee.

Have you tried this method even without the option in developer settings to OEM Unlock? On my SM-T350, I don't have the option to OEM unlock either. But I can still root and install TWRP anyways.

I tried to flash modified kernel or TWRP with Odin and I got error
Only official software can be installed.

Perhaps someone could provide boot.img files and links here?
I for instance found no matching firmwares for mine. The one that had both matching versions numbers, said it was for Cellular US. This is a wifi only model. Confused
Thanks

I have that original boot.img and magisk modified one.

There's a 7 days waiting period after you turned it on the first time regardless reboot or not.
I will make a instruction how to root and I will post kernel and modified kernel.

I didn't realize it was so effortless to pull the boot.img out. BUt, until I have that oem unlock option in there, doesn't matter.
Come on, 14 days

Finally, mine has successfully rooted with Magisk.
I will post a guide.

In the OP I had the ADB_Root_G930U_QE2Files.zip linked to the ADB_Root_G935U_QE2Files.zip zip so please make sure you have the ADB_Root_G930U_QE2Files.zip when downloading. Its fixed in the OP now so just double check
I recommend everyone put the Flashfire AP zip and Rom Zip on your internal storage as the AP file is so large that it may not be read properly do too limitations of some SD Cards. When you select AP file in Firmware there should be 4 partitions that are selected. If not then you have a bad download or need to have AP file on internal storage
Thanks for all your hard work . I just installed this so far so good but I am missing Wi-Fi calling. Is that normal or am I just not looking in the correct place? Thanks

Ok will try that when I get a chance. Thanks again.
Thx for an awesome rom.
Sorry if this question is asked before but couldn't find a solution (checked Verizon thread as well).
I am running Playstore version ROM and everything is working fine except Video Recording.
Photo is fine but when I record a video with included Camera NX, it only plays sound and the screen is either still or black.
I have been taking a needed break. I will update all my s7 roms including this one in the next few days
Nice
That rom can flash for g930p? tks your work!!
@jrkruse
Thanks for all your contributions to this device. I just bought this device and I've been diving through the forums trying to gather as much info on this locked down device.
Could you provide me with just the boot images that don't check the system image and from what model/rom are they from?
Oh and could you provide the partitions locations? The latest roms have an updated Knox that blocks SU from doing it's thing and I have to perform everything via adb (eng boot).
Blank screen
Hello,
I am on your custom rom and the phone was working fine for a day. After I restarted the phone I am not able to see the lockscreen. Its just blank. I do hear the sound of taking a screenshot when I press the buttons and I also can see the " shut down, restart, emg mode" buttons when I hold the power button but no lockscreen. I tried running the recovery boot img but nothing changed.
There is some kind of issue at the locksceen after a restart.
I'm Stuck

I followed the directions up to Step 7.
For the life of me I can not get the AP file to copy to my SD card. Yes I have enough space on it and I can get the ROM copied.
I tried copying the AP file with a file explorer, on my PC, external card reader. Every time I try, it gets to about 95-99% and says "copy failed".
I know it says flashfire only, but is that my only option?

In my case I created a folder named Download in Internal Storage and copied Zip and AP files there. I didn't have trouble coping files there.
From my experience & guess, you may still have old files & settings even though you flashed U-firm files Step 1-2.
Try to access recovery mode and do factory reset and see if this helps. Make sure you backup all important files to External SD because it will factory reset.
So I rooted my phone using Araltd's guide in this forum. I've got a couple of questions about this rom...
1. If I were to flash this rom to my device, would it remove my root access?
2. What's device performance like? After rooting, my device is very slow and buggy. Will this fix that?
3. Will my device still be full of T-Mobile's bloatware?
Thanks!

1. Yes, it will remove Root Access but you can still use ADB to do root stuff like push / pull files.
2. Since it will use stock boot instead of ENG boot, it will fix the lag issue.
3. This is U (universal) firmware so it won't have Tmobile bloat but it will have Samsung bloat/apps. During the install you can also choose de-bloat level too. From my experience BS-Free (2nd one), is both lightweight and stable. If you go with Playstore level (most lightweight, replace Samsung Apps with Google ones), you will have trouble with camera.

The QF6 ROM you mentioned is T-mobile firmware so it will have Tmobile apps. Most of them can be removed from ROM install or disabled after.
Other than that there's no performance difference.
If you want Tmobile like environment with Tmobile update schedule, go with T-mobile one. If you want less carrier apps, go with U-Firmware one.
I will no longer be updating my s7 threads until the time Oreo is released with root method. For now I have worked with @stang5litre to bring my non-root method to his amazing rom. He currently has a nougat release found here http://stang5litre-roms.proboards.com/

If you at any point tried to root it or flashed the modified boot image then you are no longer passing the safteynet checks, my suggestion is to do a clean install and see if it works then try it again making sure you don't root after you are done installing this rom.

[Root][SM-T590] Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018) root tutorial

Disclaimer: Your warranty will be void, use at your own risk. YOU are choosing to make these modifications and I am not responsible for any damages these changes might do to your device or sanity.
Hi.
Based on the feedback from this thread, the following steps can be used to aquire root on the SM-T590. The process is quite similar to rooting other devices by using Magisk. It might also work on other versions of the SM-T59x family, which can be OEM unlocked (sorry Verizon users).
Obtain the boot image
Get the firmware that matches the version installed on your device. This is important, otherwise you can easily end up in a bootloop.
Extract the AP tar.md5 file, e.g. "AP_T590XXU2ARJ1_CL14463952_QB20043720_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta.tar.md5".
Upon the extracted files, there is a file called boot.img.lz4. Extract it. Important: Most standard compression tools, e.g. 7-zip, are unable to extract lz4 compression ccorrectly. Use the offical lz4 binary from your Linux distribution or get the Windows version here. Once extracted, you should have a file called boot.img.
Patch the boot image
Copy the boot.img file to your device.
Download and install the Magisk Manager apk from the offical Magisk Thread.
In Magisk Manager settings, set the image format to "img.tar".
Enable the "Keep AVB2.0/dm-verity" in the Magisk main screen.
Hit "Install" and select "Patch boot image".
Select the boot image copied previously to your device.
Once finished, the patched image will be located in the Download directory on the internal storage.
Copy the patched image back to your PC.
Unlock and flash
Go into settings and enable developer settings.
In the developer settings, select OEM unlock, read the help text and enable the unlock, if you consent.
Once the device is factory reset and rebooted, turn the device off.
Boot the tablet into download mode.
Flash the patched boot image with Odin in the AP-slot
Reboot, Install Magisk Manager apk again and check if root is available.
Have fun.
Thanks to @gscollier, @airmaxx23 and @EinsamerSpieler for testing.

Yes, there is such problem.
I have Root Explorer app installed
When I try to move some app from "/data/app" to "/system/priv-app" (using Root Explorer) the device reboots and nothing is being saved at "/system/priv-app"
I want to make my app a system one
This method works ok on many other devices
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
I think system apps Device Security and Device Maintenance prevents me to do it.
I tried to delete them using Titanium Backup but phone reboots and they are installed again
Also there is Samsung Knox security technology

stupid question
I know this is a dumb question but where do you get the firmware....
Also was wondering if that reboot thing is still an issue.
I'll still root, I would like to try the LineageOS, eventually... how well does this work with Android apps/F-droid?
Update: still looking for confirmation on which boot image to use... guess you can't do a backup before flashing like you used to be able to do.
I installed heimdall and adb both seem to work

You can try to patch entire AP file, but I was told 19.1 may have problem. Try 18.0 first and see.

There needs to be a better option that works without the current issues when rooting. You either end up with reboots or can not log in to Samsung account at all

No.
A suggestion: don't. You obviously don't know a lot about rooting and stuff and RM3 is a bit atypical amongst android phones, so it's more risky.
Why do you need root anyway?

I will say this the above posted is the only way to root global. If an OTA comes out you better not try to update. What you will have to do is BACKUP anything important to you, complete uninstall Magisk and modules, go into fastboot relock the bootloader which will factory reset the phone then update via OTA, re-unlock the bootloader and re-root with the updated boot.img which you will have to download.... Especially important if OTA updates security patch. You have to understand custom ROMs are developed for rooting, stock ROMs are not.... Hence all the trouble.
Hi,
Two things worth mentioning :
- it seems the procedure indicated to rrot does not work with EU v. 1.15 ; I just tried and phone reboots, but with no root
- rooting the phone will not allow OTA. You will get notified of an update, but the update will not apply to the end.
Regards.

SM-T295 - Finally rooted tablet!! (updated 19-March-2021)

I have root on my SM-T295 A8 tablet!!
See my new post: How to Install TWRP and Root T295
Update 19 March 2021
Tested on T295XXU3BUC3 ROM
Prerequisites:
Bootloader unlocked - search forums.xda-developers for instructions how to do this.
OEM unlock on. In Settings/developer options, OEM Unlock slider should be to the right.
I see people still trying to patch files to get root.
If you flash the TWRP posted by @Talich52, with reboot unchecked you can install Magisk from TWRP.
1. If prerequisites met: install Android 9 bootloader through ODIN
2. Reboot to system
3. Go into download mode.
4. Open ODIN and in the AP slot put TWRP (see attachment below)
5. Uncheck auto reboot
6. Flash TWRP
7. Press vol dn + pwr keys.
8: When screen goes blank, press vol up + pwr keys.
9. Keep holding down both keys after reboot.
10. Tablet will reboot again.
11. When Samsung logo appears stop pressing pwr key.
12. When bootloader msg appears, release vol up key, quickly press & release pwr key, and quickly press vol up key until in TWRP.
13. You will then format (NOT WIPE) data. Answer yes to the format prompt
14. Clear dalvik/cache if prompted
15. Install Fix_vendor_9.0.zip or Fix_vendor_10.0.zip. See attached files.
16. Clear dalvik and cache.
17. Reboot back into recovery.
18. Install magisk - see attached
19. Reboot into system. May reboot again - that's okay
20. Enjoy!!
Updated (23 March 2020) my Tab A with XXS3ATB2 and got it rooted!!
Attached AP.tar file is for XXU2ASL3 only.
T295-Magisk-AP.tar
Okay, after multiple failed attempts, I read about a method to root my T295. It did not work!! But, I decided to just use Magisk Manager on the boot.img file only. The resultant file would not flash - it will fail. The original boot.img & recovery.img files are 65,536K bytes each. I had to take the Magisk modified boot.img and overlay it onto the original boot.ing file. I did the same for the recovery.img. Then the files would flash successfully. The first thing after booting was to check Magisk Manager. It showed I have Magisk 20.3 installed. So, I tested this with Root Explorer. I did have root!!
If you are going to try this, you need to unlock your boot loader, I think. I have not tried this with a locked bootloader.
Basic instructions
PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE STARTING!! VERY IMPORTANT!!
Here are the steps to root your tablet:
Make a backup of you apps & data before doing this. This procedure will
wipe all you data.
Go to settings.
Select software info
Tap build number 7 times to get into developer mode
Go back to main settings page.
Scroll to bottom and select developer mode
In middle of page find OEM unlocking
Make sure slider is all the way to the right (should say allow bootloader to be unlocked)
Unlock bootloader:
1. turn off tablet
2. press and hold down vol up & vol down keys together
3. insert usb cable (should already be connected to computer)
4. when bootloader screen appears, release all keys
5. press and hold vol up key for 5 seconds, then release
6. read instructions on screen to unlock bootloader (this will wipe all your data)
After reboot, go through normal setup.
Now for the hard part.
You need to download the complete ROM you have installed on your Tablet.
It will be better if you have the same ROM version as I do in post in this post (#1).
You need to unzip the ROM so you can flash it in ODIN.
If you are on the same ROM version as in my post #1, then you can just download my rooted files.
Unzip my downloaded root files zip file.
Unzip the downloaded ROM files.
In the AP* file, you need to replace my files in the zip: boot.img, recovery.img & vbmeta.img
Start ODIN. Select files for BL*, AP*, CSC* & CP*
For CSC file, select HOME_CSC*
*** Uncheck auto reboot ***
Flash ROM.
After flashing ROM. press vol dn + pwr key
As soon as screen goes blank press vol up key and hold
When get into recovery, select data wipe, then reboot
Set up phone as you normally would.
After setup, go to Play store and install Magisk Manager. Run Magisk Manager to see if you have root.
Do It Yourself Instructions
You need to do some research before doing this. This is NOT a walk you by the hand tutorial. You need to learn some things before following these instructions. Learn how to use lz4.exe. Learn how to use simg2img. Learn how to make a .tar file.
Make a backup of you apps & data before doing this. This procedure will
wipe all you data.
Go to settings.
Select software info
Tap build number 7 times to get into developer mode
Go back to main settings page.

5. press and hold vol up key for 5 seconds, then release
6. read instructions on screen to unlock bootloader (this will wipe all your data)
After reboot, go through normal setup.
Now for the hard part.
You need to download the complete ROM you have installed on your Tablet.
Extract ROM files
Extract system.*.lz4, recovery*.lz4 and vbmeta*.lz4
Use tar to make an AP.tar file with the 3 above files. **Search the Internet if you do not know how to use tar.
Copy the AP.tar file to your phone. It is better to use adb push to prevent file correuption.
Install Magisk Manager from Play store.
Run Magisk Manager. Select install Magisk. Choose Select and Patch a file. Follow directions on screen to patch the AP.tar file.
Once the AP.tar file has been patched, use adb to pul the file to yur computer.
Extract the file from the AP.tar file.
Now come the hard part:
You cannot edit .lz4 directly. You have to decompress them. After decompressing system*, use simg2img to decompress the sparse file. Search the Internet if you do not know how to do this.
Now we make our modified files so they will flash in ODIN.
Instructions:
I used hex editor neo - a windows 10 app
I opened the stock kernel & recovery files in hex editor neo
I opened the Magisk modified kernel & recovery files in hex editor neo
I copied the modified kernel & recovery code onto their respective stock files in hex editor neo
I saved the stock files & closed hex editor neo.
I used cygwin to create a tar file: boot.img, recovery.img, vbmeta.img plus other files in original AP*.MD5 file.
You should also flash all ROM *.MD5 files (BL, CP, CSC) per Magisk instructions.
New AP.tar contents:
boot.img
dtbo.img.lz4
meta-data
recovery.img
system.img.ext4.lz4
userdata.img.ext4.lz4
vbmeta.img
vendor.img.ext4.lz4
I used Odin to flash the tar file
After installing Magisk:
(Powering up normally) → (System with NO Magisk)
(OEM Recovery Key Combo) → (Splash screen) → (Release all buttons) → (System with Magisk)
(OEM Recovery Key Combo) → (Splash screen) → (Keep pressing volume up) → (Actual recovery)
Please follow my instructions and the install instructions from Magisk web page.
Magisk Installation
What system do you use to manipulate the files? (Windows? Linux? Android?)
What is "overlay"? Do you extract the boot.img from the original AP.tar.md5, and from the magisk-patched.tar, copy the magisk-patched-boot.img to the beginning of the original-boot.img, and then replace the boot.img in magisk-patched.tar?
Do you give Odin four files, or just AP? Do you use CSC or HOME_CSC?

In answer to your question, basically, yes.
I only flash the 3 files in the .tar file
I am on a Windows 10 laptop. Only 3 files need to be modified by Magisk: boot.img, recovery.img, vbmeta.img
I use Hex Editor Neo for overlaying the modified kernel and recovery files..
At the end of these 2 stock files is code that needs to be there, thus the 65 MB file size.
So I open the stock .img files (boot, recovery) in Hex Editor Neo, and copy the modded boot, recovery code into each stock .img file..
I use cygwin to create the .tar file, then flash with ODIN 3.1.14
Where does this leave you with respect to booting? Do you have to hold down buttons like you're trying to boot to recovery, then let go at the right time, to boot with Magisk active? Have you booted "normally" since you installed Magisk? Is Magisk still active? Have you shut down completely and then rebooted?
Wu's writeup says, when he's patching an AP file, to install to recovery, the boot.img is patched to "remove the signature of the image to prevent soft bricks". He doesn't explain why the signature would cause a soft brick with an unlocked bootloader and a nulled-out vbmeta. If you're restoring the original signature, it seems like you're flirting with the situation he was trying to avoid.
Will you be posting in the main Magisk thread. Aside from the news of another success, the details of your solution might help Wu improve the automatic patching enough to make manual adjustments unnecessary.

No keypress is required for booting to maintain root.
I have tried this multiple ways: shutdown/boot & reboot - still have root.
I have not posted in main Magisk thread yet. Can you give me a link to the main thread where I can post this information?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/mod-magisk-v1-universal-systemless-t3432382
This is the General Discussion thread. I've seen references to github for reporting bugs. github might be a better bet for providing technical information about how patching should be implemented.

Thanks for the link. I have posted to the Magisk forum.
Well, besides the possible outcomes, I tried the method and it worked for me. I'm not loosing magisk between boots too, not touching system apps but I can install modules and get root.
So, thank you very much for the finding!

Attempting to restore Knox would be a waste of time because it is impossible. When you think of Knox, think of the manufacture warranty. Once you void the warranty, it's a goner.

How To Guide [MAGISK] Root your Realme GT 2

Pre requisites
• Unlocked Bootloader (probably only Indian variant?)
• ADB and Fastboot drivers (I'm assuming you've set that up since you unlocked bootloader)
• Python (used to extract boot image)
• Your stock rom (I found it here: https://realmefirmware.com/)
• time (need some time to download your stock rom and get a hold of your boot image)
Steps:
1) Download Oppo_Decrypt tool from here:
https://github.com/bkerler/oppo_decrypt
2) Extract the contents and place in a folder
3) go to that folder and open a command prompt/power shell in the folder
4) Use commands accordingly
If you've added pip to path:
pip install -r requirements.txt
If you've not added pip to path:
Python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
done? Everything installed?
now get your rom zip file, inside it you'll find a big .ofp file, extract that ofp file and place in the folder where you've extracted your tools
now inside this very folder where ur tools are, create another folder and name it "extract" (tbh u can name the folder anything you want but for the sake of explanation I named it that)
now open a command prompt in the folder where the tools are kept
type: Python
Press space
drag and drop the "ofp_qc_decrypt.py" file in the command prompt
Press space
Drag and drop the large .ofp file you extracted
Press space
Drag and drop the extract folder
Press enter
Wait for a while till there's a message saying
"Extracting super.img" or something along the lines
Exit out of command prompt
Go to the extract folder you'll see a file called "boot.img"
Send this boot.img file to your phone
(Also recommend keeping a copy of the boot.img on your PC for safety)
Install Magisk Manager Apk from the official website on your phone
Open Magisk manager
Click on Install
Click on select and patch a file
Choose the boot.img file you just sent from your PC
after done send the magisk_patched.img to your PC
Now boot your phone into Fastboot mode
(I'll assume you know how to since you've unlocked bootloader)
Connect your phone to your PC using USB cable
open a command prompt and check if your device is connected by typing:
fastboot devices
if it shows up then proceed
type:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
(Your file name can be different you can just drag and drop the file)
after it says success, type:
fastboot reboot
after reboot open Magisk manager app (might ask u to download?)
and reboot if it asks you to
Congratulations you now have root access!
How to extract images from OTA zip files:

When there is an ota update download it from software update and wait for it to finish extracting
DO NOT CLICK ON INSTALL
Go into Magisk
Do Uninstall Magisk > Restore System Images
Now Click on Install Magisk > Click Install to Inactive slot (after ota)
click ok and let's go
DO NOT CLICK ON THE REBOOT BUTTON
Now go to software update and click Install, your phone will reboot with root available still and ota update applied
