[Q] Not getting OTA updates/takes a long time to come out? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

The last update that was pushed to my phone was 47.1.A.2.374..... in the beginning of November...
What gives? Is there a way to get updates faster?
I know that XperiFirm exists. I would just like to get updates OTA.

If you don't want to go down the road of flashing your own firmware, there isn't anything you can do.
I created an account for the Sony forums, because in theory they are read by Sony employees. I started a couple of threads regarding inconsistencies in the firmware rollouts, but both of these were deleted by the moderator as 'unhelpful', so good luck with that
Edit: If you change your mind about flashing your firmware, I wrote a how to

Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2

Has anyone else received this update?
Not here.
Los Angeles, CA
lol figures once i get root an update starts rolling out, it probably enables wifi n like they released for the EVO today.
1.22.605.2 is the software version i have (rooted)
It adds 3G Mobile hotspot and fixes the signal issue, im in a pickle now though lol. cant remove superuser
Not exactly a pickle - just don't do the upgrade, wait for someone else to take the OTA download and make it root-safe.
where did you confirm this info as to what the update offers?
I guess i am confused, what would happen if we did the update with our rooted phones?
Nothing. Because with rooted phones you won't see the OTA Update...but if you were to manually upgrade without it being root proofed....you'd loose root.
Wait - weren't we already at 1.22.605.2? That's what rev I'm running, and I haven't taken an OTA since the first few days after launch.

Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2
I'm confused to, so if you are rooted, you won't see this update? or you will see it and if you do it, you lose root? I have the stock rom, which is what I thought disabled your OTA's is this an incorrect thinking?

The name of this post is Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2 so even though we are at 1.22.605.2 that is not 1.65.605.2
Thats the thing, i was rooted and did get the OTA update notifications, hit accept for the update by mistake. And the only reason why i confirmed that info is because i have it on my inc.
P.S sorry lol made a type in the title of the post, its 1.35.605.2
So if you updated as root, did you lose your Root? It is not guaranteed that you would loose it, just likely is all. I feel like they released it to break our Root, and nothing more... but maybe they fixed a few issues too... we have the same screen grounding issue the EVO had, and the recent update fixed theirs... but who knows...
EDIT: Posted an article to an outdated update. Oops...
so i assume you lost root?
Yes i did.
I haven't seen it yet. <-- OHIO
have you tried redoing root? did you loose recovery?
I havent tried redoing the root process again, but how is that going to work? isn't the root process based off of the original software? the baseband is different as well.
Haven't seen it yet either <-- Rhode Island
Didn't find any information on it either. Was their a "more info" link included with yours? as with other OTA updates. Changelog, etc.?
Better question would be, do you have a screen shot of your About Phone page (baseband, software version, etc.)
somebody who gets the update needs to upload the file so a dev can do something with it.

What I'd like to see in an update thread

Every time a new version update comes out there is always lots of threads on how to get it, how to root it, when it will come...etc. Unfortunately, there is rarely any mention of exactly what changes the new version brings and whether or not it is worth updating. Seems like so many in here are more interested in just having the latest version of Android and not with what actual improvements might come with it. Being that upgrade paths for the i537 aren't exactly simple (compared to previous phones I had that did not have locked bootloaders) could someone perhaps give us a rundown of what's new and improved in 4.4.2 to make it worth the trouble of upgrading? I am on rooted stock 4.2 with a ton of frozen system apps and before I go through the trouble to get the OTA I would like to assess if it is worth it. Also, will I first have to get the OTA of 4.3 before I will get the 4.4.2 update and if I do should I just wait to root until I have the latest version? Thank you!

You will have to flash the ML2 Odin package to be able to get the OTA for NC9 to install. Personally I would wait a couple weeks since it seems like they're getting very close to unlocking the bootloader.
To answer your question about the 4.4.2 update, I've posted the changelogs from both AT&T and Samsung in this thread. If you really want a rundown of what the 4.4.2 update will look like, just look at the regular S4. There are slight UI changes between the S4 and S4A, but you'll get the overall impression.
Thank you, Devo.:victory:

From what I understand yes. At worst it looks like they will be able to develop a patch that may not unlock the bootloader, but will allow us to flash any ROM with any kernel, effectively the same as if the bootloader was unlocked. There are still some things that are over my head, but everybody seems super excited about this latest development.
If you want to read about what is going on, read these threads (they actually reference each other):
If we are serious about unlocking the bootloader
Well, It must be our lucky day
These are developer threads so try not to clog them up unless you have something to contribute.

[Q] Received OTA but cancelled and no OTA now (Update: received it)

[Q] Received OTA but cancelled and no OTA now
Hi, I have the Moto G XT1063. Some minutes ago I received the OTA for Lollipop 22.21.25.en.us version . I started to download it, but I wanted to grab the link using my PC as hotspot and using Wireshark but when I cancelled it I was told to go to System/Check updates to update it again later, and when I tried to update it again I got the message saying "Yout device is up to date". I tried different Wi-FI networks, USB update via Motorola Device Update but no update found.
Did this happened to any of you? Could you resolve it? How?
Thank you!
I got the OTA notification on my XT1064 earlier today at lunch. I am rooted (TWRP, Xposed, debloted) so I know it would fail anyhow, so I cancelled it...I am counting on the fact that we will have CM or slim for the phone soon.
I had the same thing happen to me for the last update when I was on vacation a few weeks ago. I had spotty hotel WiFi so I decided to cancel and try again later. Still haven't had a second chance.
Wow, WEEKS? I've already waited 6 weeks. I thought I would get the update in a day again but it doesn't look like I will.
I guess we will have to wait until the official version comes. I like how Motorola keeps their phones updated but their way of updating them is horrible and they have really dissapointed me. I hate the rollout being in phases and on top of that when I finally received the OTA after more than a month waiting and tried to update it later I cannot get it anymore! They must be joking! Besides, I don't know why they take so long! What's the mystery Motorola?
They keeping everything in secret god knows why or 2 russian engineers.
Even who is invited to soak test shouldnt talk about the update. I think they hate Europeans, because the difference between the two device (the EU version and the US one) is minimal.

Motorola does the same stage rollout update methods as Google, although personally I find Google to be much worse.
They do this to steady the flow of updates (to save their servers some stress), and to catch early bugs that are noticed by the first or second 'pool' of users.
Apple does this right in my opinion. Once an update is pushed, every single supported iOS device can update immediately.
Patience. We just need patience
It's only software...
Found a solution!
The same thing happened with me when we get the first sw update (stock launcher - Google Now launcher) I tried a lot but I was not able to update it. After 2 months I did a factory reset & then tried to do a system update & it worked I again got an option to do software update!

Sorry but I don't find what you've said as a solution. I definately don't believe that waiting 2 months after you received the update is a solution. I think that you got the OTA for a second time.
I will not do any factory reset: doing a factory reset DOES NOT do anything. In fact it changes an unique Google ID that Motorola uses to update their mobiles phones and could actually reduce your chances to receive the OTA. This was explained by a Google engineer- So for anyone reading this DO NOT FACTORY RESET your phone. Let's just wait; we are already in the batch-
You all can force OTA.
Go to settings => Apps => All => Find google service framework.
Clear cache and data of it, stop the service & then reboot the phone. Then again try to check for update.
Do it couple of times if did not work on 1st try.

NO! That's actually the same as doing a factory reset or even worse. It's a myth proved wrong. Just google "google engineer OTA" and you'll see how the rollout is done. I can't post links because I'm new here.

Finally I got it today. It didn't show up as a notification but I checked for updates and Lollipop 5.0.2 was there! Jumped from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 (412.3 MB). It's very nice. I believe Motorola is rolling it out officially since it showed up in the System updates check.

Wait... So you're saying since I rooted my phone with TWRP I have to then not accept the update and THEN wait even MORE? How can I use it now? i.e. is there anyway of reverting it to where I can use the update.

AT&T Software update as of 7/9/15 - 146.75MB

Not sure what this is yet. Non rooted, stock image.
5.1.1?? Will report back...
Not 5.1.1
No idea as they haven't posted changelog, but hopefully a fix for MicroCell issues everyone is experiencing.
Let us know if you see any changes.
Update downloaded.
Real upgrade from OE2 to OF3. Thats all it says.
@Globalrebel where are you looking for change logs?
Update just finished. Yeah Android version is still 5.0.2. Baseband G925AUCU2AOF3 now.
Getting it now.

This is getting ridiculous, we need an update from 5.0.2, the memory issues I'm dealing with even on XtreStoLite are almost unbearable
Exactly and as updates for 5.1 come out for other carriers we get updates for random att crap that are almost a month old
It's sad to say that the latest AT&T OTA patches the export for ping pong root, don't take the OTA, because you cannot downgrade the Odin fails

They know because it says on the Ping Pong Root thread not to update for anything past May 15th as the method for root has been patched
I'm curious if there are any other undocumented changes besides the 2 official changes listed earlier. It feels like a fairly big patch for a fix to an phone location and a kernel security fix.

In any case, what process do i need to freeze in TB to stop my phone from trying to download and/or annoying me with that pop-up when it does happen?

AT&T Software Update is the main one, but there are a few others - I don't have an AT&T ROM on mine right now to help out, but it's been posted a few times already (I think I even posted those once)
Just freeze att software update. Then it can't even run so no downloads. I got lucky I clicked on update after reading it in Android central but didn't want to install it. Postponed couple of times but somehow it automatically loaded the update process. I was like sh#t. When it booted up it said a problem updating. And then I blocked the updater. My root almost gone lol

T-Mobile says update rolled out. Is there a way to force?

According to this page
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-18109#update_download
T-Mobile began rolling out 6.0 on October 5th. It states in the instructions to perform the update manually is essentially performing the android check for updates however I get no prompt to download the OTA.
Has anyone found a way to force the update? Possibly resetting the device?
Thanks!
Wait for the OTA, sideload when someone gets the link or flash the entire image (lose everything)...
Keep pressing that update button, but it does nothing ..
I'm literally going to beat a dead horse but why, are even Google's devices subjected to this ridiculous update process? If someone wants the OTA then they should be able to get it..
I am rooted on TMO and did a manual update to LYZ28K a while back. I clicked on Check for System Update just for kicks and it downloaded a 23.2 MB file. Any idea what that is?

There are methods you can use when manually flashing to not lose data. (Don't flash userdata.img) be it through fastboot cmd directly, or through the use of a toolkit like Wugs.
OP, save yourself the headache and just download the update and fastboot it. It's a unified image so there is no need to wait for a "specific" version.

You can still get OTA's as long as you're not rooted. Unlocked bootloader doesn't matter. Anyways, even if you did root, you can just manually flash the next update the same way. Takes less than 20 minutes to do.

We do, it's called the factory images that google provides, we get the updates immediately (had 6.0 on release day), if you want to "wait" then it's only on you, the means are out there to get the updates right away, otherwise, gotta wait for the carriers. Android isn't and doesn't seem like it'll be like the iphone, independent from carriers as far as updates. Unless Google grows some nads and lays their foot down, this is how it will always be sadly.....once again, unless you just get the update and do it yourself like maybe 80% of the community here.
While II respect the fact that the majority of the XDA community is willing and capable to erase all data and side load 6.0 this isn't something that should be accepted in 2015. I'm not asking for Google to be like Apple, but for a Nexus device, a device designed to offer the latest and most up to date version of android, to be forced to wait for weeks for a proper OTA update is just ridiculous. I simply laugh at the android 6.0 articles that the tech blogs are releasing when 99% of the user base doesn't have access to the software.
Like I said I know that this has been discussed time and again, it's just hard to believe that a company as mature and advanced as Google, can't get an OTA rolling out to all 5 million Nexus 6 owners when Apple does in fact provide the latest software, on day one to multiple hundreds of million users. It's honestly quite gross.

Nope, you don't have to erase your data to sideload an update (keep in mind that sideloading an OTA isn't possible if you have root, custom recovery or custom kernel). You don't even have to erase any data (provided that you don't need to unlock your bootloader prior to flashing) if you flash a factory image (even though it's nice to clean out the old system once in a while).
This was just a tangent, my real reason for replying follows:

Of course they can roll out the OTA to everybody at once, but they don't want to (and I agree). Check out this article (2 years old, yes, but the base principle still stands):

You don't have to wait weeks. You have to potentially wait days, sometimes it is hours. Soon someone will snag the OTA url, if they haven't already, and then you can use ADB to sideload it without needing to wipe anything.
I haven't been following too closely, but I actually haven't seen anyone that has stated they have actually received 6.0 OTA yet. Some people posting they were, but they were getting one of the security fixes. Maybe they actually haven't pushed the OTA to the Nexus 6 yet for some reason?

It also has nothing with Google's ability to roll updates out to all of the Nexus owners. It is how they decide to stagger their updates out to people. They do this to make sure everything goes smoothly. If they put an update out that causes some sort of major problem, it would suck if it was in the hands of every single user, rather than just 1%.
The only update I received today was LYZ28M sadly. Not sure why they don't just have an app where people can download Nexus updates any time instead of OTA.
I got all the important stuff backed on Drive and most of the time I get all back even without backing it up
