After trying a few different tempered glass options I finally settled, the best I could with this set up.
As much as I loved the idea behind the glass screen protectors, I disliked the ones I tried for the following reasons:
- The surface being too reflective and turning my phone into a mirror in most environments, other than higher brightness indoors
- Losing the beauty of the AMOLED screen (blacks appearing grey'ish)
- The rainbow effect
- Slight loss of sensitivity
My application of the Ultimate Shield went relatively smoothly. The installation is a wet one (giggidy) and I also performed it in a steamy bathroom to again further reduce floating dust getting under the screen. Dare I say it, the screen is pretty much perfect minus a few lift ups at the edging. This was when I put my beloved Spigen Rugged Armour case on, however the MaxKu case - whilst not feeling as sturdy in the hand - does the job good enough and only slightly lifted it up at points. Very much only a bit and that I can live with.

tech21 or caseology in conjunction with ultimateshield

As the title, about to get an s7 edge and after a lot of reading have settled on ultimateshield screen protector. (avoiding glass tgsp) and am vacilating between two perhaps three cases.
Tech21 evo
Caseology envoy or parallax
Spigen rugged.
All of them review well. The tech 21 seems to have more of a lip top and bottom for the screen front, the caseology parallax seems a bit grippier, the spigen is quite thin.
Is anyone using them with an ultimateshield skin that can chime in with comparability with the protector not lifting or even venture an opinion on which of three is better while remaining relatively thin and unobtrusive.
lots of research the last day or two to answer my own question. pulled the trigger on the Tech 21 Evo frame.
reasons.
Caseology, looks great but there just isn't any lip top and bottom to help protect the screen if it lands flat. so eliminated from consideration.
comparing between the spigen and the tech 21, both have a lip but the tech 21 swung it with bigger drop protection and bigger bumpers on the ends.
more expensive, but I've decided not to cheap out on such an expensive phone. If the protector lifts then I'll deploy a sharp scalpel and shave the edge of the case to sort that issue out.
Hi mate, do you have any pictures of your phone with the screen protector and the Tech21 case? I'm having some issues with my VRS Design case.
Thanks!
Not got a picture but it does pinch the screen protector top left corner on my screen. thing is, with no glass screen protector really playing nicely with cases, I'd rather have something on there than nothing just to give that extra bit of protection for the screen.
I'm getting the skinomi case friendly screen protector in the near future. but in the meantime, leaving the ultimate shield on.
one other thing about the ultimate shield. I went for the front and back skins. getting the sides on is a pig because of the compound curves on the corner, but a patience and it's on really really well.
give it time to dry though. but if I was to put it on again, I'd snip off the sides and just keep the corners. the reason is, the thickness of the side skin is just enough that it makes the button response on the side not quite as crisp as it is without the skin on.

Real Life RhinoShield CrashGuard Bumper Review

Hi all, I would like to take this opportunity and give my honest and practical review about this case & screen protectors.. Pictures coming up soon.
I have had this case for about one week now and its been great in terms of protections. I generally don't have butter fingers. Most of the times, i have my phone on my office table. As far as the protection goes, this case does an excellent job protecting volume rockers, power button, alert slider and charging port. It's shock absorbing patterns is great for those corner drops. This has to be one of the best bumper case I have used on smart phones. Previously, i have been using the Spigen Rugged Armour as my daily driver. Its a very beautiful soft tpu case but doesn't match the protection anywhere close to what RhinoShield offers. This case is for someone who wants great protection in very minimalist way. It's definitely worth giving it a try.
I am also using the Rhino Tempered Screen Guard. I have used few other brands before this, I got to say this is one of the best out there because of the following reasons. Scratch reistant, slim profile, anti-fingerprint, not edge to edge screen protector which makes it easy for me to switch cases without worrying.
Pros
-great protection
-it covers the camera bump
-doesn't rock when its laid on table
-alert slider works fine
-excellent cutout for the usb Type C charger and speakers
Cons
- It's very snug that makes it difficult to remove/putting on the case for the first few times
- very stiff volume rockers
- side bumper could use additional textures styling to improve the grip since this phone is >5 inch.
-will not be able to use the full size tempered glass screen protectors
Here is a video from Phonebuff who did a drop test while using this case. It's a killer case. It sets bar higher for other phone case makers.

Cases & Screen Protectors anyone?

hey guys , tell us what case and screen protector you are using and a small review of it would be helpful for fellow members
I have bought the Norby rugged case and parallel universe silicon case . the norby is a very durable case but slightly heavy and the paint starts fading in a few days itself . The other one Parallel universe case is fine but feels rough to touch and slightly expensive .ill post pics shortly
I've tested :
https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B01LYA4J7M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Very good glass protection, with a smoother sliding feeling than original screen.
Glass has pleasant rounded edges.
https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B01ISP9SVA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Excellent case, very well cut, that do not make phone bigger but, as a consequence, does not provide a big protection against fall.
Very good scratch protection.
https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B01J8PS37Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Average one, silicon is not clean cut, but good scratch & fall protection.
Phone is notably bigger.

Don't buy tempered glass protection for 1+5!!

It seems that all currently available on AliExpress (at least) tempered glass protection are flawed, because of:
1- Protectors that covers the body in full, and has some black areas: has actually glue only on the black non-transparent zones, but nothing on display area it self (so only display ages, upper and lower parts has glue), this makes it rubbish, because it will not stick well to the screen, one or two gaming sessions and it will end in recycle bin.
2- Fully transparent one, with full screen coverage: because 1+5 has 2.5D screen, those covers will not stick well on phone edges since tempered glass is rigid, this maybe can be used only with covers that overlap edges of the screen also.
3-Fully transparent one that don't cover all of the screen: those usually stick well, but only if they left about 5mm on each edge uncovered! I believe it is clear that such a gap ruins the protective purpose of the tempered glass, aside the ugly look due to gaps. (Again, having an edge overlapping cover could make it look better)
So it seems the only practical option for now is to use usual non glass protection unfortunately.
If I missed something or you have some suggestions please let me know..Some manufacturers claims that there protector is 4D, what means that it should solve all above issues, i didn't try those yet, anybody tested them?
I am regretting removing original 1+5 protection
As I bought and still use an Orzly tempered glass protector I concur with your analysis at this time. When I first applied the Orzly is was perfect without the issues some experienced but after 3+ weeks the sides must have lifted slightly due to my bumper case and dust particles got underneath next to the left/right buttons. Since then I've been religiously looking for an alternate that passes the case test but none so far have come to light.
I like the feel of the tempered glass so much that I've resisting going back to the film/plastic alternatives which I had always used in the past. I'm even considering going naked on the screen, relying on Gorilla Glass 5, but continue with a bumper case. Or the reverse, by using an Orzly but with no bumper case as I already have a dBrand skin applied. None of those options seem all that appealing. The one protector that seems to work with a 2.5D screen is the Galaxy 8's Whitestone Dome Glass but it's a crazy expensive $41USD and difficult to apply. I'm not sure even if a OnePlus 5 version was available I'd spend that much money.
I haven't had any luck with any tempered glass., due to point 2 which has been raised:
2- Fully transparent one, with full screen coverage: because 1+5 has 2.5D screen, those covers will not stick well on phone edges since tempered glass is rigid, this maybe can be used only with covers that overlap edges of the screen also.

After reading all of the reviews I decided just to leave the plastic one on until someone gets their act together and offers a proper tgsp for the OP5
Sent from my OnePlus5 using XDA Labs
Agreed with OP and all of above. I had and still have the Orzly TG protector on, but dust underneath. I want to go back to the usual plastic ones, but don't know which one covers as well/much as the original one that came with the phone. Any recommendations?

Im still waiting for my Nilkin glass protector to arrive (it's almost been a month, sigh)
If this one has the same issue as the ones I've tried before it (lack of adhesive around the edges), I'm going to try and go back to using plastic screen protectors.
I don't want to use my device without one, but I also hate how these glass protectors don't fully adhere to the screen around the sides (including top and bottom)
Biuzko tempered glass screen protector from Amazon had been working perfectly for me for many weeks.

The YouTube channel you mention is also my favorite choice for screen protector info for the Oneplus 5. He always tests the protectors with various cases. His branding of the channel can get annoying but his market coverage is excellent and vast. With the plethora of tempered screen protectors its your choice for an accompanying case that often makes a big difference in your satisfaction. Here is the Big unBox - Biuzko review.
One thing I noticed is when the Big unBox applied the Official OnePlus 5 tgsp video it had lots of bubbles on the edges that he said couldn't be removed while I watched XDA's TK review and his application looked perfect with TK giving it a thumbs up. In the comment section of that review TK said all was well even after a month of usage. I was surprised as the Official tgsp has garnered horrible reviews and comments in the XDA Oneplus 5 accessories section. The most consistent criticism of the Official tgsp is that it cuts off a tiny fraction of the screen. In fact, so far my research indicates all of the "Full Adhesive", "Full coverage" tgsp cut off part of the screen. Personally I think the reason they have a black line on the edges is to hide inevitable bubbles due to the curved edge. The thicker the tempered glass the wider the side black stripes (e.g. Orzly versus Official).
Here is the criteria I'm using in selecting a replacement for my Orzly tgsp and cheap bumper case. Note that I've already installed a dBrand skin so that skews my criteria somewhat.
Tempered Glass screen protector:
- Must have full adhesive (not just top/bottom and side adhesion) and full coverage
- Would prefer, but am a tiny bit flexible on, part of the screen being cut off (limit is that not one pixel of the notification bar's clock is trimmed)
- Must have an oleophobic coating
Case:
- Needs to be as non intrusive as possible adding grip but not greatly ruining the sleekness of the phone
- Uses a minimalist design and/or clear materials so as not to obstruct viewing of the dBrand skin I've installed
- With the case on the buttons (power and volume rocker) must not be difficult to press
So far my research has me leaning towards the Official OnePlus 5 or Biuzko tgsp with a Rhinoshield Crashguard case. My one issue is that the Rhinoshield reviews always mention how difficult the volume rocker buttons are to press. Here is the video that has me leaning in that direction as is seems to best address my criteria
OnePlus 5 best case/protector setup
I'll being doing more reading and searching today hoping to find the unicorn of tgsp/case combinations. The dust under my Orzly is driving me mad but the feel and responsiveness of its surface has me rejecting a film/plastic protector alternative.
I'm using the Biuzko as well with the Tudia MERGE case no problems.
The trick is to first put OP5 in the case, THEN place the screen protector on. It fits perfectly, and you can't mess up the alignment since it falls right in. Then I just try to put pressure on the sticky parts for a few minutes.
I've had no problems for 3 weeks now.
I installed mine the same way, but I'm using the op5 carbon fiber case.

The original plastic cover was just perfect, is there is any possibility to find an équivalence ?
There's only tempered glasses on internet

Hello,
I recommend you the plastic screen protectors from GadgetShieldz. I made a review about it on another post on xda but to summarize, it's a bit difficult to apply but then it's great. The screen looks good and it's cheap ^^ highly recommend.
FYI, I was struggling with TGSP for the OP5 and I just gave up. There is no good alternative atm.

Skinomi makes a wet application protector in both clear and matte. I posted pics of the matte version here. Since that post, I've experienced no scratches or orange peel effect. It's also great for no fingerprints.
You can always get the Nillkin H+ Pro, but only if you are using a spigen case or otterbox. Right now I am using the Spigen Rugged Armor with Nillkin H+ Pro and the gap between the glass and the case is around 1 mm (i would say 1.5 mm if I have to be more accurate). The Otterbox case is even better but I find it too bulky, tried it once for an hour and I did not enjoy it, but some of you may like it.
Few words about the Nillkin H+ Pro.
I know there are few variants of the Nillkin glass and I have tried all of them in the past. In my opinion the best glass is exactly the H+ Pro even tho it is a 1 dollar more expensive. The glass has zero rainbow effect or halo effect, it is 99 to 100% clear. It has amazing orleophobic coating. My Honor 8 has the same glass for 6 months now and it is flawless. I am going to change my nillkin glass with the official 3D tempered glass but only because I received the rhinoshield bumper. Otherwise I would not change my nillkin. You are going to get used to the small gap in a week or so.
Don't leave the phone without a glass.
I just applied mine, best screen protector I ever had, pure quality. Quote me on that
I love the official OnePlus screen protector, it's premium & looks good. Who ever made this thread is straight up wrong. The one he recommended is no Bueno, the glass part doesn't have enhesive. Look I am a OnePlus 5 conisuer, the screen protector is fantastic ?
I have siegen case. Can I buy the original screen protector from oneplus store with no problems? Or can I suggest me something with dust proof and oil proof ?

Spigen Rugged Armour vs Ringke Onyx Brushed Metal Case comparison

Heres my Spigen Rugged Armour vs Ringke Onyx Brushed Metal Case comparison reviews with side by side photos
Just a foreword I've only had Spigen cases for my OP3 and its saved me a least a few time I've dropped it either at the airport or the road - brown trouser time where u think the screen will be smashed/cracked. All times walked away with slight mark/scuffs to original OP screen protectors. Fancied something different for my OP5T so went for the Ringke as well.
Look and feel
As you can see both made of same material
The back of Ringke feels unique very sandstone type texture which provides excellent grip whereas the Spigen is very smooth rubber
However the Ringke case feels much thinner so not sure if offers same protection as Spigen
Cutouts and Front lip protection
Front lip protection to protect the screen - think the Spigen wins slight extra thickness to the the lip
Extra protection for the camera both same - few extra mm to protect the rear cameras
Again both have cutouts for all key ports - Ringke also has dust covers for USB-C port and headphone jack which is actually a good thing (fluff stopping charging situations) However a big negative - very hard to access the alert slider using the Ringke due to the top lip so Spigen wins
Both are compatible with the original OP screen protector with no lift off but I think this may be due to human error as I assume applied by hand at factory and I seen some when not fully lined up with screen /front camera etc.
Costs well the Ringke is the slightly cheaper and it came with a free lanyard both premiums products but for me the alert slider access is key issue for me I will keep both and swap due to how I feel. Any questions fire away
I used the Spigen rugged armour on my oneplus 2 and 3. I was thinking about getting it for my OP5T, but I got the sandstone case when I bought the phone and that is just absolutely fantastic... probably doesn't do much when it comes to protecting the phone.. but, it looks amazing.
Once I get tired of looking at this beautiful thing, I will probably end up buying the Rugged Armour
It would be nice to see a pic of the phone in the cases...
