Where have all the big phones gone? - Xiaomi Mi MIX Questions & Answers

Coming from a Huawei Mediapad X2 with a 7 inch screen. I am still looking for a phone with a large screen in a world that seems to now be going backwards screen size wise.
I have the Mi Mix 2 now and love it, but was really hoping the Mi Mix 2 was going to have a screen at least as big. I'm not really interested in going back down to a 6 inch screen.
The Huawei Mediapad X2 was great, 5000mah battery lasted for 3-4 days. But the CPU was just not that great anymore, it was always a little sluggish.
Are there any decent options out there any more for something in the 6.5 to 7 inch screen size? In a perfect world i'd like a 7 inch Mi Mix.
I actually still have my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 that I used as a phone for a year. but that was just a little too big. The sweet spot for me is a 7 inch screen preferably in a shell made small by minimal bezels.

@omniphil i have to say for a lover of big screens, my most optimum size was the Mi Max, which had a great battery too!
i was hoping the Mi Mix 2 would have been of a similar size, with a big battery, but was disappointed, so ended up with the MiMix (same size screen as the MiMax (6.44), but less bulky and better battery than the MiMix2.

I just stumbled across this... We'll see if this actually come to the light of day.. 5500mah battery!!!

I had the same problems last year. Didn't help that pretty much any review site classes a phablet as anything 5.5 and up. That said, if the consensus is that 5.5+ is phablet territory, it's not surprising that there are so few devices in the 6.5-7 inch range.
When I was looking for an upgrade from my Nexus 6 I knew I couldn't go back to smaller than 6 inches. Even at that size, most other phones felt very small. Even then the only 4 decent picks were the Mix and the Max (1), which both used the same screen, the Lenovo Phab2 Pro, and the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra (6.8) . The S8+ would have been ideal but it had only recently launched and was almost double the price of the Mix. In hindsight, I probably should have waited 4-5 months for the price to drop but I'd already had the N6 for a long time.
I ruled out the Max because it was just a bulkier, lower-specced Mix and the Phab 2 for much the same reasons. Even though the Ultra had a considerably bigger screen, it wasn't that much cheaper than the Mix and again it had mid-range specs. It had advantages like dual speakers, expandable memory ,and a slightly larger battery, but the Mix was just so impressive looking that I pretty much knew it was the one as soon as I saw it in reviews. Even today I still haven't seen any device that looks better (although a lot of reviews claim the Mix 2 looks better, I don't see it).
Since Xioami already have the Max line, I doubt the Mix will ever be as big again. Maybe they'll bump it a little for the Mix 3, but I can't see it, and certainly not 6.5-7. By the time the Mix 3 comes along I doubt they'd be able to get away with 1080p again. So, a larger/denser screen, high-end CPU/GPU, and maybe 8GB of RAM would put it in the S9/iPhone price bracket. I think I'd just settle for the Max 3, but it only edges the Mix in terms of screen size/expandable memory and stereo speakers. It's not really enough to call it an upgrde for most. If only they'd have gone with a more powerful SoC I'd definitely have switched.
What else is there, realistically, in that 6+ range, even now? Aside from the S8+, Note 8, Phab2, Max 2- not much else that I know of. Maybe Asus will launch an Ultra 4, but I can't see it based on the pretty poor reception/sales of the Ultra 3. I'll probably hold on for the summer for the Phab3 (6.5, Snapdragon 835, 6GB RAM). It won't look as good as the Mix, but it will at least be of a similar (and not lesser) size, and it'll have better performance.

iPhone 6 Plus vs Note 4 vs Nexus 6: Specs Comparison

Came across this comparison, Note 4 crushes the competition.
Note 4 was found to have superior:
Display
Battery
Camera
Storage
RAM
I really think with the 16MP Camera, Samsung has finally created the best smartphone camera.
Check it out.
Source
Display.- Yes, definitely.
Battery.- I have heard the iphone 6+ has better SOT from most reviews. Not sure, though.
Camera.- iPhone has better low light shots, Samsung has better day light shots.
Storage.- Well... you can get a 128GB iphone, but that will depend on what you want to waste, for the same price, yes, you get more space with the note
RAM.- Android uses more ram than iOS, I'd say that iphone performs smoother due to optimization.
I've only looked into half a dozen reviews, and I'm not going to deny that the iPhone 6+ has some strengths (battery life). These phones are both excellent so I don't really see a clear-cut victor. Maybe that will change over time with new software.
I've been using the camera non-stop all week because I've been at a wedding in Sonoma. I'm not a photographer by a long shot and have used the camera on "auto" with HDR "on." I took this one this morning at a vinyard. They asked me to e-mail it to then to use on their website.
Ultra low light is nothing to write home about. Low light can be impressive.
Here's another good pic...
The Note 4's camera is good. And as a point-and-shoot which is the way 90% of people will use it. If I can get shots like this, anyone can.
At the end of the day, we have amazing choices of phones right now especially if you consider the Droid Turbo (I know it's Verizon only, but rumored variants coming to other carriers).
The differences between them have definitely narrowed and it comes down to what's most important to the customer. MAC/iOS people gonna iPhone, Android fanatics gonna Nexus... and the rest are up for grabs.
The Note 4 is definitely an amazing phone. Built in multi-window, floating apps, and the stylus are freaking amazing for a power user like myself. I can't believe I waited this long to jump on board.
The iPhone's better low light photos and marginally better battery life (if that's the case) is irrelevant to the features exclusive to the Note 4 line. (Apple isn't even an option for me even so.)
You just can't really go wrong if you're getting a top of the line phone for what you want. Sure there are some sacrifices to weigh, but there's never going to be a perfect phone for everyone.
To borrow from Nintendo, NOW WE'RE PLAYING WITH POWER!
Note 4 has the advantage of the external battery. You can buy Samsung battery pack with the charger and stop worrying about battery life. Now about ram ios doesn't require the same as Android to run smoothly but if you want to have over 3-4 tabs on safari without refreshing then you have a problem. Look at the new Ipad air with 2gb ram
Sent from my Note 4
Just remembered, Note 4 also has the MicroSD card slot. That's a huge difference in them.
I just switched to a Note 4 from an iPhone 6 Plus after 2.5 months. Here's my feedback:
Display - Note 4 is definitely better.
Battery - My iPhone lasted much longer than Note 4 but that may be because I have been installing apps/widgets left and right. We'll see once things settle.
Camera - Note 4 is slightly better for low-light pictures.
Storage - I had a 64GB iPhone and that was good for me. With Note 4, I will need to buy a card.
RAM - Note 4 may have 3GB of RAM (vs. 1GB on iPhone) but my iPhone ran much smoother than Note 4. I get occasional freeze and lag with Note 4.
I have booth Note 4, iPhone 6 plus and a Nexus 5.
Camera. Slighty better but much slower than the iPhone. On the other hand is speed essensial for my kind of usage.
Smoothness. Note 4 ain't close to Nexus and iPhone. I was a bit shocked when I noticed that not very much had happened since the S5, my chinese MX4 is butter compared if you counting all small lags. I flashed latest firmware two days ago and it feels a little bit better.
Storage. Has 64 on the iPhone and it's more than I need right now.
Display. Really good but I haven't used it outdoor on a sunny beach yet
Battery. Not as good as I hoped for. I have exactly the same apps and usage on all androids and it's very ok but not stunning. So far LG G2 and OnePlus roles my SOT with hours. I have a feeling the iPhone is slightly better. You can't really count on tests like GSM arena, they don't have my 84 apps installed.
Im using both for 2.5 months now.
Screen=note 4 is better but both great
Camera= i dont see any speed difference. Daylight note 4 better. In low light 6 plus abit better. Both very close.
Video=quality for note 4 Ois performance better on 6 plus.
Performance: note 4 is faster on pretty much every 3rd party app. 6 plus faster on system apps(gallery, phone etc)
Smoothness is pretty much same for me i dont realy see big difference. Only recents app has 0.5 delay on note 4(happens sometimes)
6 plus definetly needs 2gb ram safari is headache with 1gb. 2-3 tabs then reload is suck. Multitasking is better on note 4 too. But both good.
Battery in my usage note 4 is better.
From the design iPhone 6 plus loses to the Note 4. Apple did absolutely nothing for the iPhone 6 Plus other than stretching the iPhone 6. (or shrinking the iPad Air, depending on how you look at it) The phone is so slippery and uncomfortable even for occasional one-handed operation. I know people will augment the grips with cases, but that still does not help with its underlying design incompetence. Some of these iSheep would argue how inferior plastic is compared to aluminum used for soda cans, and would insist that cases should not be a consideration when discussing phone designs. How the times have changed.. I totally share Erica Griffin's experience with iPhone 6 Plus' ergonomics. (minus the girl jeans part, lol) Compare that with the Note 4, it looks abundantly clear who has more knowledge and experience in manufacturing phablets.
The rest of stuff is more about iOS v. Android to me, and I know which way I roll. There is just no competition. Though it does help to make a decision that iPhone 6 Plus lags and Safari refreshes tabs more than ever before thanks to the puny 1 GB of RAM Apple deliberately put in for planned obsolescence.
Note 4 has very good screen and battery life for me, but regarding smoothness Samsung is miles behind my Nexus 5 or even 4. Storage is impressive with SD card, but then again I didn't have problems with space on Nexus either. It is very good hardware with very bad soft. Things changed drastically with CM12 tough, now it is far smoother than Nexus 5.
I do not understand all the fuss with photos, none of the phones has good enough camera to replace proper camera. You can take a photo when needed.
If u don't mind rooting, Note 4 is great piece of hardware. If you prefer not to do it you might be better off with Nexus 6.
The best camera in the world should be the one you carrying around daily
I think and hope that the Lollipop for the Note is going to give it a bit less bumpy road. Some people care for it and some don't, same as with everything else in the world. If the Note can give me 50-60 fps and less hiccup I'd love the ride.

First impressions compared to Mix 1

Here are some initial thoughts after using it for 24 hours:
Overall look and feel is quite different. Build quality is still excellent but rounded sides and corners give it a more mainstream look. Gone is the futuristic black slab - it is now more of a generic 2017 phone shape. The rounded sides and smaller size to make it more comfortable in the hand over long period though. The joint between ceramic back and metal sides is tight and smooth.
I am slightly disappointed by the size of the side bezels. I knew the top bezel would be larger due to the loudspeaker but the thicker side ones feel like a step backwards. I know we are talking fractions of a mm but it does again detract from the futuristic look.
Smaller screen is definitely noticeable compared to Mix 1 but for me this might be the ideal size (I don't play games).
The camera now protrudes a bit, again removing from the black slab look. I find the gold ring looks smart though.
Phone feels very snappy and responsive running stable Chinese rom. Will migrate to EU rom when I can unlock bootloader and then hopefully lineage at some point.
Fingerprint sensor is incredibly fast - fastest I have used in any phone. And sensor location is perfect and well marked - so refreshing after using S8+ for a while.
Bottom loudspeaker is fine - I would say similar to Mix 1. Earpiece is clearer as you would expect but again it has lost the crazy futuristic feel.
Not had enough time yet to properly evaluate battery and camera.
So as expected it is not a major leap forward. Indeed some on here have called it a downgrade. I feel it is more like a different phone model. Perhaps the futuristic Mix 1 was a one off that will not be replicated until there is the next major breakthrough.
I got mine last friday.
Battery take 1h20 to charge from 15% to 100%
With a full charge, I lasted 1 day and 3h, 6h of sot (1h of gaming (Clash Royale, DH5); lot of chrome, a bit of youtube). Not as good as the Mi Mix, but should last a good day.
For those who are interested by benchmarks, Antutu: 178k, Geekbench: 6700
And annoying issue, Gear app (for samsung smartwatchs) always crash, so can't pair my Gear S2...
What do you guys think about the camera? Espacially pictures in low light?
Im not sure if I should buy mi mix 2, wait for pixel xl 2 or huawei mate 10 pro maybe ..
Where did you guys buy from?
There's various options, check the threads in this subforum.
My impressions are positive but keep in mind I spent the last 3 &1/2 years with the OPO.
It should have been "fatter", to make the camera flush with the body and accommodate a bigger battery. It feels so thin, even with the case on. Cameras have gotten a lot better since the last time I was in the market for a new phone, SoC's too, no lag or stuttering. Battery life seems great initially, I can only imagine what the original mix was like. Enough space in the chin bezel to incorporate capacitive buttons, maybe it will happen for the mix 3. The other 3 bezels are definitely there, the rounded corners aren't helping but I'm not bothered at all. Speaker is quite loud, not as shrill as I'm used to hearing from phone speakers.
Excellent fit & finish. It is a good phone, with minimal changes it could have been a great one. If Xiaomi makes it easier buy the phones internationally, opens up stock android options and doesn't go mainstream but rather have the mainstream follow their concepts, they can skyrocket their market share. Especially with current pricing, they can go from "a alternative flagship" to "the flagship to buy".
Any random restarts? My Mix 1 was plagued by random restarts and I read on some other forums that other Mix 1 owners were having the same problem.

None for me. I've never had a MIUI device before but very impressed by how smooth this thing is
That's good to hear. I was very hesitant to order the Mix 2 after my experience with the Mix 1 but in the end decided to give the Mix 2 a shot. Looking forward to when my cases get hear so I can start using it.
Promising first impressions so far!
I've been using G5, Moto Z and ZUK2 for a year now. Moto z had the best experience I've ever had on an Android performance and stand by drain wise but it just died to bootloop. G5 has amazing camera but it's very sluggish and battery life is mediocre.
ZUK2 is a great device but the camera is FUBAR.
I'M considering giving mix 2 a chance. The 2 major points for me is the snappiness (alt tabbing between apps) and battery efficiency.
Seems like Mix 2 is going to be a safe choice. I'm just not sure how the miui handles, never used a Mi phone before.
Hi, can anyone test if the latest Google Camera HDR+ port works on mix2?
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-customization-raw-support/
Is the HDR+, RAW, photo sphere mode working?
hdr+ and photo sphere works, raw doesnt work in gcam but works in 3rd party camera apps

With the eu Rom, can you get the wallpaper carousel working? (Do you have a selection of themes in the lower half of the screen, not just "Offline" wallpapers?) Thanks Chris
S...ucks compare to mix
I liked my mi mix's much larger screen. It is only 0.5" (or so), but it did make a world of difference. I find the mi mix 2 (and 2s for that matter) screen size too small. It is not as dramatic as when I went from my Samsung Mega to a Samsung Note 4 (the days of the phablet, when people mocked us...) but still...
I never understood why Xiaomi downsized the screen.
Now, what I hated about the mi mix is it's fragility (I admit it, I broke the screen 3x, and this last time I won't repair it given the sweet deal I got on the mi mix 2), the screen that is at it's edge along with the ceramic sides makes for zero margin of forgiveness when this phone hits the floor.
I am gathering that the shape and design of the mi mix 2, along with the new case that I ordered, will give me more longevity in terms of screen protection.
Oh, and the mi mix 2 wins hands down in terms of Data and LTE connectivity. The mi mix was on many occasions, lost in space as an app would spin and whirr while waiting for signal to open up (Waze, mobile parking apps, in general LTE use) whereas my Mi mix 2 hits all the following bands from my carrier...
Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz)
Band 7 (2600 MHz) and/or
Band 17 (700 MHz)

Reasons why I bought 7 pro S10 plus owner

Where do I start with this, well let's start with my S10 plus 512gb version as that was my daily driver since launch. For me that's a seriously long time to stay with the same phone. It still is top notch, pardon the punt.
I never thought I would leave my favourite phone for so many reasons on the shelve to pickup the cheaper Oneplus.
The following are the reasons why I'm currently holding on to Oneplus 7 pro, the features which I most impressed with:
1. QHD 6.67" amoled screen, vibrant big and bright all screen. Nearly as vibrant as Samsung's screen.
2. Camera best Oneplus have produced. Images sharp with good detail, really impressed. Obviously not as good as Samsung's but for me good enough. I'm not a massive picture taker or selfies person.
3. Loud dual speakers, again this is top notch. Not as full or rich sound as S10 plus but it's darn close. Another surprise.
4. Triple SSS performance (coin that one) - Super smooth speedy performance. No strutting or freezing experienced yet.
5. Near stock firmware with a few Oneplus touches.
6. Quick updates to latest Android software.
7. Pop up camera prefer it over the hole in the screen, use it unlock phone as it's cool.
8. That damn refresh rate, boy ow boy is it smooth. This has completely spoilt me, it's fluid. This was always missing in android phones when comparing to iPhone. It's not perfect but it's brilliant.
It's pricey but when I consider how much other flagships are selling for its value for money.
I would pick this phone over every other phone even though it doesn't have wireless charging and waterproof ratings and only 256gb storage. Anyone overly reliant on these features then this phone isn't for you. Fortunately I'm not and I'm sticking with it for as long as I can.
So far I haven't missed my s10 plus and I'm glad Oneplus took this flagship route too. And I'm glad they've given people choice of going premium or the cheaper version.
Any questions give me a shout.
totally agree with everything you wrote!
This is my first day using this phone, also switching from the s10+ 512
Also I have come from the S10+ 8/512gb Ceramic White, whilst I very much enjoyed my experience, and Samsung produced a solid device.
The user experience is the selling point for OnePlus, it is simply untouched at this point, it's a perfect blend if you will.
I'm not saying I had any issues with my S10+ it was smooth, and OneUI is a remarkable improvement. However there was 4 Solid reasons for me to switch.
1)The 90htz all screen display, now I have experienced 90htz with the R.O.G and it's something I very much appreciate, also an uninterrupted screen, (the punch hole is not bad) but having the Find X and Next previously I grew to appreciated (no interruptions).
2)30w Fast charging, yeah this is a great thing (currently have 44w with my Vivo IQOO) and when using the S10+ with 15w it was painstakingly slow in comparisons.
3)UFS 3.0 now this was included in the "Galaxy Fold" why it wasn't present in the S10+ or even the 5G variant is Monday boggling, as clearly it can be massed produced and Samsung are in the semiconductor industry so "confused" but another reason to switch it up.
4) Software oh boy do I fully appreciate oxygenOS is clean, well optimised and has a fine blend. It's almost perfect, and in some ways better than stock itself (although it's close to)
5)ok I'm adding in but it is a great development device, still now OnePlus are friendly in this regard and in my opinion I think they are fully sensible as they learn so much from this, the development community gives them information on what we want improved, implemented, the likes and dislikes, even development that makes things better like Gcam, they learn from this. So their is no arrogance, this I like.
Samsung are closing doors and TWRP has to run on the boot partition now (not good).
So I'm not saying the S10+ is not a great device it's fantastic, it's just not quite as good as a user experience you get with OnePlus. Ok camera needs work on the 7 Pro, but I think it will get there and for the pics I take it's perfectly acceptable.
Will get my 7 Pro tomorrow, looking forward to that great user experience.
I only wish the oneplus had the gs10 plus type of curve display since they decided on a curve. The gs10 plus curves almost at the end of the border while the 7 pro curves at 75% of the screen.
I also switched from an S10+ for the display without a notch, better update support, and overall smoothness of OnePlus phones. I'm deciding whether or not to keep it as a back up since the resale value has plummeted.
Goodbye to my nice S10 Plus and hello cool 1+7Pro! Cheers
I honestly was debating whether to get the S10 plus or the 7 pro. Decided on the 7 pro and was going to think about it for the next week since I have 14 days from date of purchase to return the phone. My mind is made up now so now I'm trying to get my wife one now.
I own both the 7 Pro and the S10+
This is coming from someone who hasn't owned a Samsung since the Note 4 and has owned almost every OnePlus device.
While the 7 Pro is a really good phone the S10+ is just better. The only things better on the 7 Pro is the screen scrolling (90htz), OnePlus gestures (best Android gestures hands down), UFS 3.0 storage, and screen off gestures.
The fingerprint reader is faster on the 7 Pro but the fingerprint reader on S10+ works when your fingers are wet, and you don't need to wake the screen to use it.
I do like the size of the 7 Pro (I like bigger phones) but in-hand the S10+ feels better, 7 Pro is thicker than the S10+.
Samsung's new One UI is nothing like the old Touchwiz. The S10+ has so many customization option it's not even funny. I have found no reason to want to root the S10+ (coming from someone who has rooted every single phone they have owned).
7 Pro camera is ok but the camera on the S10+ is good if not great (not Pixel great).
The S10+ will be my daily driver and the 7 Pro will be my rooting, flashing, playing around on phone.
I have both the S10 5g and OP7 Pro. Both are outstanding devices. You can't go wrong with either. But the price difference can't be overlooked. With tax, the S10 5g (512gb) is double that of the OP7 Pro. Think about that for a minute...DOUBLE!! How may things can you think of that are half the price of the competition and actually better?!?!? I can't think of any. Says a lot about OP and what they have accomplished. There are obviously pros/cons with both devices. Depends what your needs are. Kudos to Samsung & OnePlus for making great devices!
Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk
I may be only one, but I think the overall performance of the 7 pro is in a whole other league. I've yet to ever see this thing stutter at anything I've done on it. Cannot say the same about my current S10+ ceramic or any other one I've had including the crazy 12gb 1T variant. I've had the U, U1, W, F and F/DS and most of the time phone will stutter. It was most noticable when unlocking it and going to the home screen, mind you my home screen is not a clutter fest but a simple single row of 5 icons and one clock. Then in general use, chrome would take a bit to open etc.
Then there is the wireless power share, total gimmick if you ask me. It's cool sure, but useful to what degrees? Maybe if you got the Galaxy buds (which wore also asstwine aipod sounding hot garbage) and charge them when going to bed.
Wireless charging? Could careless for it, never use it anyway.
Built quality tho will have to go to Samsung. The 7 pro feels nice in the hand and you can feel it's much better then the 6T which felt like a $200 toy but it can't beat the feel of the S10+. I've also noticed OnePlus uses some sort of lower quality of metal for their housing as I'm noticing some fine scratches from 2 days of use and being super careful with it. Never had that issue with the s10+, no case ever, no screen protector and not a single micro scratch.
Coming from a Note 9....I really like OP font and speed. As others mentioned, even chrome is faster loading. Yes the screen on the Note is much better and the gcam loaded on the Note owns OP...for now anyways, but something about this phone smoothness and speed has me hooked on it. I'm still in the 14 day window on it and thus still deciding to keep it... But otherwise I love it. Love the OS, speed, gestures, etc. The screen curve is ok, but could have been better. Look at it like this guy's.... It's better than what's coming from pixel 4....
True, the Pixel's are always behind and have a hard time catching up with once a year release...
What I prefer Samsung S10 plus ceramic
over Oneplus 7 pro.
S10 plus build quality ceramic version feels and looks much more premium
S10 plus is thinner
S10 plus speakers
S10 plus camera and video recording options
S10 plus 512gb memory option
Would I go back to S10 probably not as I'm Oneplus is almost my ideal phone. After using Oneplus software, screen refresh and triple SSS performance I couldn't.

is it still worth to buy in Sept./Oct. 2020?

I am looking for new phone from past 4 days and I am not able to find better option than this K20 Pro, due to sd855 present in it. For the price it's available right now I couldn't find another. My main priorities are:-
1) it should handle game fluently
2)good rear cameras (not for printing photos but uploading on instagram)
3)have a good community for custom rom development (this phone have that)
4)have decent battery backup as i am not going to game whole day but yeah approx. 2hrs game session
5)last but very important for me a HEADPHONE jack is a must thing.
I wanna ask is that, is it worth to buy this phone even when its 1year old. Also, I wanna know if there is an alternative to this phone or should I go with it without having any thought.
Earlier I considered realme x3 pro(due to sd855+ but there was no headphone jack, no custom roms) and ONeplus nord( i think it's overpriced and without headphone jack).
I am gonna use new phone for atleast 2yrs, so what are your thought about this phone? is it worth to buy or to wait to for another flagship killer(which is very hard to see in near future)?

I am looking for new phone from past 4 days and I am not able to find better option than this K20 Pro, due to sd855 present in it. For the price it's available right now I couldn't find another. My main priorities are:-
1) it should handle game fluently
2)good rear cameras (not for printing photos but uploading on instagram)
3)have a good community for custom rom development (this phone have that)
4)have decent battery backup as i am not going to game whole day but yeah approx. 2hrs game session
5)last but very important for me a HEADPHONE jack is a must thing.

Don't think too much now, go for it. I had similar questions before buy it, but for me they were: no notch, fm radio, jack, custom roms, a fair battery (4000 is the minimum). I didn't care too much about the cpu but this one is a beast. The cameras are just fine since I'm not a photographer. The only con for me is not having an external sd card. The biggest pro for me is not having to look at a f#cking hole or notch. We already have an aosp 11 rom if you need it & we'll probably have some more android os versions. This phone is worth to buy & if you ask, I would bought it again without think twice.
I kind of regret it. There's noting really wrong with the phone, it just leaves a lot to be desired.
-The screen is very small and narrow & the bezel is quite large for a modern phone.
-Battery life is pretty good, but not great.
-The screen quality/resolution is not good. I find it quite distracting, although you get used to it somewhat.
-The back camera is not good compared to other devices.
-There might be no more support for Xiaomi. Meaning we may never get Android 11 for the device. As we've technically had our 2 updates. Which is pretty bs.
The screen size of the Pocofone F2 or the Mi 10 Ultra is where I'd probably put my money.

First time I've heard of a 6.4" screen described as too small???
The aspect ratio is identical to almost all current phones, so it's certainly not narrow compared to anything else. The resolution of FHD+ is absolutely fine. The human eye cannot distinguish higher resolutions, at typical reading distances. This is why going to QHD is pointless and a waste of money.
Currently almost all phones with the SD865 and SD865+ have jumped in price by quite a margin over the previous SD855 phones. So this phone still represents very good value for money. It's certainly better value than the current SD7xx midrange phones, that are similar in price.
However the K30 Pro/POCO F2 Pro came with only a reasonably small increase in price, so is not much more expensive and is probably the best value SD865 phone currently available. This would be my choice if I was buying a 'budget flagship' today. If this is stretching the budget too much, then this (K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro) phone is definitely still worth buying.

yes dude I agree with you K30 Pro came with reasonably small price increase, but it's not available in India. If it was launched here I would definitely go for K30 Pro, that is why I was considering this K20 Pro. Well thanks for the help bro I got my answer. Going to get this phone on upcoming sales with exchange and bank offers.

worth considering you points bro that you told, but I think it's gonna a huge upgrade for me as I will be switching from my Samsung Galaxy S7. May be screen quality will not be that good compared to samsung, but I currently I use my device on 720p to reduce battery drain.:good:
bro can you tell how are the pictures captured with google camera mod is? (compared to stock camera)

What you are talking about are phones from 2025. The K20P/Mi 9T Pro is an amazing phone. The screen is actually quite large, but not oversized (the phone's dimensions are about as equal to the OnePlus 3). The bezels are thin enough to not be annoying, but not too thin for you to accidentally press the screen while holding it (looking at you, Samsung phones with edge display. Even though there's a rejection algorithm in place to solve this).
The battery life is decent with 4Ah, but we already see that the next-gen phones have a capacity of 4.5Ah to 5Ah. 4Ah is still enough to last a day, the problem I face with MIUI is that idle drain is a lot.
The 1080x2340 screen is pretty good, especially in terms of PPI (I mean, you shouldn't complain if you compare this to your desktop monitor, laptop, or television). Color space is also pretty good with D3 color space when you use the "warm" preset.
The main rear camera is superior (IMX586) and gcam modders are busy with unlocking the full potential of the sensor by modifying the driver.
The only thing you are correct about is the support from Xiaomi (or should I say, Xiaomeme), with not only lack of updates, but lack of security updates. The latest MIUI 12 EEA v12.0.2.0 rom came with a 1-month outdated security patch. It's a shame to see that they simply don't care about their flagship phones, or they have too many devices and rom variants to maintain, so they rather focus on the China beta roms and push completed changes over to stable Global, EEA, CN, RU and IN.
If you have no issues with MIUI (MIUI 12 is actually pretty good, I prefer it over stock android, because of the split notifications), I'd suggest staying on it till Xiaomi decides to end the support and then switch to a custom rom.
Go for it, good phone overall no notch and cheap.

Buy a Pixel 5 now or wait for Pixel 6?

Hey guys,
I wanted your opinion regarding the Pixel 5. How happy are you with the aesthetics of the device? How does it feel on hand and how does it feel in the pocket?
This year I've tried a bunch of phones and I want to switch to something smaller and that has good camera and good battery life. Currently I have a s21 Ultra which is a good overall phone but this thing feels like a brick, it's heavy when you carry it and if you have a good case the phone is even bigger and heavier. Tried a regular S21 but that again was a bit bulky and heavy when used with a good thick case.
I've been reading about the Pixel 6 (all rumors at this point) but it seems like they are going to increase the size in the 6 series. The smallest upcoming Pixel 6 you can get will be 6.3~6.4 inches and even though it will have upgraded cameras and better specs I think I would just avoid buying it because of the size.
What do you recommend? Should I just buy the Pixel 5 now or maybe wait until the 6 series are released and then make a decision ?
Absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Pixel 5. I LOVE mine.
That being said, no XL version. I didn't like that. I came from P2XL. I like bigger screens. I'll probably get the 6XL

Im trying to stay at a maximum screen size of 6". And I want the weight to be reasonable. Another phone that's getting my attention is the asus zenfone 8. Seems like the ergonomic king of all androids powered phones right now. But it's a tough call between the regular supported software of pixel vs Asus.

So I'm someone who shares somewhat similar views / opinions. Just changed from an lg v40 to a pixel 3, very happy with a smaller screen and less weight.
It absolutely is an individual thing, of course. Some constantly use their device, gaming, video's etc etc, and a bigger screen (read heavy) outweighs (punny) other aspects.
But if yer like me, really only use the device as a phone, take good pics occasionally, facebook a little, etc... AND carry it in your pocket always, then size and weight become prominent in the choice.
Seeing as google is going the 'bigger is better' route, I'd say a 3, 4 or 5 is where I'll be for years to come (thanks!! Lineage!). Basically, I just don't do enough screen / face time to justify a larger heavier phone.
But a 5 now? Naaah, it won't be long, with 5a and 6 becoming available, the price will drop. buy then.
cheers

The idea of switching to a smaller phone came to me after I was hiking and traveling with some friends for about 3 weeks and most of them had bought the Iphone Mini. I was surprised by how a tiny phone like that was pretty much on par with my s21U and some other top of the line expensive android phones that some other friends were using. It took good pictures, battery life was good, and even though I had a beast on me (the S21U) when we compared pics, battery life, browsing, app switching, etc, I saw very minimal differences. The damn thing feels like a toy when you hold it but it is such a good device. Now I can not use an Iphone as my daily driver, I don't hate their products, they're just not for me. The main criteria for me has always been
1. it has to be android OS,
2. must be root friendly
3. good battery and good pictures
Carrying the S21U around is kind of a pain in the butt lol. I can certainly use it with one hand as a tall person with big hands but it's so uncomfortable just carrying it around. And for the specs it has I was expecting more out of it... so far it has simply been a good device. I can't say I am impressed or wow-ed by it.
I think I'll wait for the 5a be announced and see it in person before making a decision but I am already 60% against buying it as it seems like they will up the screen size to 6.2 inches. The camera and processor will stay the same pretty much as the pixel 5 -> but it will be cheaper than a Pixel 5 so I'm not sure if that'll be enough for me to consider it. I'm definitely not waiting for the 6 series to be released though, at this point it seems "confirmed" that all the 6 series will be at the 6.3-6.4 screen size and up.

I can relate, for sure. Have never tried an iPhone but sincerely doubt it would work for me either. I hate the proprietary 'you're forced to do it this way, whether you like it or not'.
Agree, the 5a and 6's are going to be too big. Only reason I'd wait for them to come out is then, the p5 will drop in price. Then I'd get the p5
I really enjoy my pixel 5. Perfect size. I did really like the S20, however, I didn't want to give up root. Also, at the time it said that on Verizon I wouldn't get 5g with the Intl version, but I do believe that I would of gotten it (not that I've seen 5g even once in my area on the Pixel 5... but that's another discussion) As for battery/pictures, I haven't owned a Samsung in recent years, and this being my first Pixel, I am really impressed with the camera. And Battery for me is wonderful. I am not a heavy user, very minimal, not many apps, no social media, no gaming, etc. so my baseline wont be the same as yours, but the Pixel 5 fairs well considering its specs.
I can't imagine using a phone too much larger than the S21. My brother recently upgraded his S20. It's so, darn, heavy. I'd get used to it with time, but going from my P5 with a slim case, to playing with his S21 is difficult. I am considering the Pixel 6/S21/S22/others/ here soon, but if I am content with the P5, I'll be on it for as long as I can make it last..
I agree to wait for the 5a to be released, even the 6 if you can wait it out, as then the deals for a new one, or someone letting go of a lightly used one should be for a good price.
I usually get the latest phone each year but if the P6 is a millimeter over 6" I might have to skip it. The P5 at 5.7" is really the largest I'd like but 6 is max. It just won't fit in my running shorts or my saddle bag and would probably fall out of my pocket in the car. They really need to rethink the larger size or just go the standard/XL route so everyone is happy.

how much does google discount the older phone when they release new ones usually? I've never shopped for Pixel phones so I'm not familiar with their strategy. Right now Pixel 5 sells for $699 on their website

Not positive but it should be discounted 100 to maybe 150, initially. So think about the cycle of the pixel 4, and where it is now. It was originally 799, but it's at 400 now and a 4a is 350.
Those are much more reasonable prices for the phone, imho. I have a pixel 3 and with lineage available, more than happy to use it until the price drops.
cheers
Pixel 6 is going to be a major jump in terms of design and camera hardware. I would totally wait for it.

And, playing devils advocate here, some would say the 'major jump' in design is a major jump backwards (they will be too big). Camera hardware is changing, that's a good thing always. But it's worth asking yourself; are u unhappy with the pics you get now? I mean, if you're not taking photos professionally, is this a difference (assuming there is one) that would matter to you?

I'd agree with the specs and design improvements, however, the OP didn't really seem that concerned with better this or that. He was concerned about the size and bulkiness of the device, which I am in the same boat. At 5.7" the P5 is simply the right size for a lot of folks. In the 9 months I've had it I've been totally satisfied with everything about it including battery life. Looking at 6.3 is a big difference. Now if they can keep the weight down and perhaps max it at 6.1 well that's a different story. And then there's the price. One caveat is the $699 price now of the P5. That needs to go on sale for $599. Then it's a buy without waiting imo. The next couple of months should be interesting as leaks are released.
It would have been nice if they kept the screen size for one of the 6 series phones to 6.1" maximum. Looks like they are upping that to 6.4". The big screen size alone is keeping me away from wanting to get one. Also Wonder if there will be a huge difference for point and shoot or daytime pictures between the 5 and 6... we'll see when they do the comparisons.

I'm really hoping that they keep the screen size to a maximum of 6.1. From the leaks so far it seems that they are going for the big screen though. I'm using a s21U now, I like the camera, not exceptional but it's better than good imo. I really like the zoom capabilities of it also, they come in handy if you want to zoom to far away objects. But I'm getting tired of these big screen and heavy phones. It's sad that there's not many Android operated devices that have a good size and good specs and are root friendly.

Agree. Google will no doubt make improvements to the camera ability. Believe I've read the high res zoom will go from 2x to 6x. Great of course. But the closer you zoom in, the steadier you have to be, thus the exposure has to be quick, meaning the ISO has to be high (grain). During a bright sunny day it will probably work well.
Me personally though, I'll stick with my 40x zoom Canon pocket camera, if I'm going out to shoot birds or something. While sure, it would be nice to have a phone with more zoom power... do you need it? how often u gonna use that?
realistically speaking, it's a 'nice to have', but certainly not something I've ever thought I needed.
cheers
An alternative suggestion - get a 4a super cheap for now and see how the 5a and 6 pan out.
I have owned 4a and 5, moving to them from the S20. Both are excellent and while the differences between 4a and 5 might look significant on paper, they are barely noticeable in use. The 4a is quite the bargain.
What I liked:
-Size. Though I personally prefer a 6.2" screen (the OP6 was perfect), having it smaller was actually really nice instead of the giant bricks most phones have become.
-Camera. Even though the hardware isn't the greatest, the software makes the Pixel 5 take some damn fine photos for the price.
-Root!!!
There's some downsides to the Pixel 5 in my opinion.
-Under glass speaker (who in engineering thought this was okay?) This is insanely annoying and I can't fathom how anyone could deal with this, and is the main reason I returned mine.
-Piss poor hardware (it's slow, and noticably so).
-God awful Haptics.
-On mine, sometimes it would actually butt-dial people even though I had a finger print set up. Or it wouldn't answer calls even if I got answer 50 times (this doesn't mean this happens to every one, I firmly believe mine was possessed)
Your mileage may vary, and you may be okay with my gripes, but if it were me, I'd wait for the 6.
