Unlockable Snapdragon proccessor - Samsung Galaxy S9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Now I take everything samsung says with a grain of salt and some hot sauce but the lady I just talked to (I recorded it) said that the snapdragon verizon s9+ had a unlockable bootloader (but she highly recommended against it). Has anyone else called samsung and asked them?

pretty sure all US variants will get a s9 with a locked down, just like the S8 and S7.

Reminds me of this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/galaxy-s8-unlocked-s-bootloader-t3563973

Yup there was a similar thread for te Note 8 also. Probably just another case of confusion of sim unlock vs unlock bootloader. Most consumers don't even know what a bootloader is. It's not likely that Samsung will train low level reps about bootloaders, there's no reason to. When a rep hears unlocked they probably refer to sim lock. Many low level reps probably don't know what bootloaders are either.

I use to be a RC... that is until samsung started locking thier stuff down. I'm hoping that what the lady said was right.. if not then I might go with the zx2, only issue is it doesnt have 4k @60fps. Irritates me they turned off 4k hdr on the s9

Why would she "highly recommend against it" if she was just talking about a sim unlock though. Not saying I think it's unlockable or believe what she says.
Sent from my SM-N950F using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Look, can we just take a second to remember that the Samsung reps have NO F-ING CLUE what they're talking about? When I had issues with my Note 5, they recommended I take off the back and pull the battery to get it to reboot.
So... Yeah. Don't get your hopes up here.

Yes more than likely the woman confused bootloader with sim unlock
There is no way sammy is going to unlock the bl on the snap...
I miss how they at least used to make developer editions at least for verizon and several others

The odds that this lady knows what a bootloader is is slim to none, when you said unlocked bootloader she probably thought of the phone being carrier unlocked. We've been through this a few times and its always locked on snapdragon phones.

That's what I thought but when she said "this will void your warranty if you unlock the bootloader", that's what makes me wonder.

why wouldn't it work on version? From what I read the exynos version is capable of the same radio band Verizon uses.

The first link is from June of last year so it does not matter. The quote you miss from Anandtech.
"Indeed the Exynos 9810’s new modem supports CDMA. Samsung’s licensing dispute with Qualcomm and their recent reconciliation points out to issues beyond “simple” technical matters."
Even if it has the radios it cannot use them in the US without paying Qualcomm. Hence the reason they only sell the Snapdragon model in the US.

Unlocked S5?

So, I am wanting to get the S5, but I am tired of all the AT7T bloatware that comes on these phones. Plus, being in the military, prefer unlocked phones. So, what are my choices here. Where can I get an unlocked S5 that will fully work on the AT7T network?

The closest you could get is a TMO branded S5 which ships BL Unlocked (at least initial shipments) a few bands may not work though depending on the TMO radio. Also you would need to sim unlock the TMO S5 and buy it outright which I believe is 660.

US Unlocked Model SM-N960U1

Hello, first post here. I usually just lurk. I recently bought the US Unlocked version of the note 9, model SM-N960U1. I see posts about only the Exonys units being the only ones with unlocked bootloaders. Will the carrier unlocked Snapdragon model have a locked bootloader?

i guess if something as trivial as spay and secure folder not working is enough to stop you from rooting then yeah life must suck in that sense.
appart from secure folder, spay has a viable solution on rooted phones with magisk with android pay.
but then again if your phone can't be rooted then why even bother debating why not to root or what are the down sides of rooting?
unless its for validation purposes of being stuck with not having such a choice( being able to root).
anyways what's done is done. no sense in debating pipe dreams

When you use Samsung Pay everyday, it's not trivial. And Android Pay is not equal to Samsung Pay. If it were, then I would just get a Pixel.
I'm not trying to validate anything. You stated there were ways around three tripped Knox, and there's not. Not for Samsung Pay and Secure Folder. And I'm not arguing saying people shouldn't root. It's your phone, do what you want with it. I just don't want people getting the impression they can trip Knox, then work around it. That's not true.
And as far as why argue when my phone can't be rooted anyway? Well, why did you come here debating in a thread about a phone that can't be rooted. I wasn't even debating the merits of rooting with you, I was just stating a fact. Troll somewhere else, Troll.
Hey
You device has an unlocked bootloader. So you can root it and flash anything on it the problem is that you have less options because no one is working on stuff for snapdragon models assuming that everyone use an usa version of it.
I will attach a picture of the chat i had with an representative of Samsung Canada.
I hope that developers here take the effort to create some stuff for the Canadian version.

Samsung Reps are notoriously wrong. The N960W is the same exact device as the N960U and does NOT have an unlockable bootloader. Believe me, if it were possible to unlock the bootloader and root the N960W, it would be all over the forums and everyone in the US would be selling their N960U to buy one.

Why can't the snap dragon variant be rooted?
I've seen various posts claim the snap dragon variant of the note 9 will NEVER be rooted ( or little to no chance of being rooted) , but the exynos version can. What I don't see, is why? What makes this version so impossible to crack vs exynos and why are people so sure that will remain the case? Not arguing whatsoever, just want to know. Is it all down to bootloader locking? I have the Sm-n960W variant, while most of the threads here refer to other variations. I was also told by best buy that this was unlocked, and I confirmed if they meant rootable not just carrier unlocked

Sometimes I wish XDA has a FQA thread for every device, so we don't get at least one thread of every page that has people asking how/when/why questions regarding SD variants getting root. I think probably the mod team here at XDA takes the stance that "everyone must search before asking" too seriously. The question is valid, and the answer is not intuitive to newcomers, yet somehow the knowing the answer seem to be some kind of unspoken prerequisite, which is strange.
Also, never trust customer service representatives knowing correct answers regarding root/bootloader, be it Best Buy, your carrier, or even Samsung. You are very likely to get a more accurate answer here on this forum, from people who actually own the device model.

The answer is simple. Because Samsung ALLOWS that bootloader on the N960F and the N9600 to be unlocked. The N9600 has the same Snapdragon processor as the N960U and the N960W, yet it's bootloader can be unlocked. So it's not the processor, it's the software.
Don't ask why, because I don't know, but that's the difference. And since the S7/Edge, the US bootloader has NOT been unlockable, despite the best efforts of developers. It's just simply impossible.
And despite what the people at Best Buy say, the N960W is not rootable or bootloader unlockable. I doubt they even know what it means. As was stated, if it were possible, people here in the US would be buying N960Ws or flashing the N960W firmware to unlock the Bootloader.

No. It's been said over and over in this thread the N960W is NOT bootloader unlockable. It doesn't matter what firmware you put on it. It can NOT be bootloader unlocked. I don't need an official statement from Samsung to tell me it can't be unlocked.
The 9600 is the only SnapDragon device that can be bootloader unlocked.

you need to unlock the bootloader to use magisk v22+
Unfortunately for rooting and unlocking bootloader, you can't do that with phones purchased through Verizon. You need to find an unlocked phone to do so. Swappa is a decent place to get one nowadays, but you have to pay in total, no payments can be made.

That could be slightly deceiving. An unlocked phone is carrier unlocked that's it. It does not mean you can unlock the bootloader. So technically you would need an unlockable bootloader device not merely an unlocked phone. You can buy an unlocked Verizon phone with no way of unlocking the bl as witnessed by the OP.
True, I should have worded that better!
If you know what you're looking for though, an unlocked device is still the best route, at least for Pixels. Most of the time if it's not locked to a carrier it can be rooted and unlocked. At least in my experience it's been this way. But I also ask questions and make sure I know what is being purchased before following through.

It wasn't really meant to be critical of you, I'm sure you know all that. I've just seen too many horror stories of buying an unlocked device and not being able to bl unlock due to restrictions the carriers put on. Some have been lucky and paid off the device, begged tech support to allow bl unlock and succeeded in that request. And then there are those devices that are carrier unlocked and will never be bl unlocked like the Verizon models. So as you say, ask questions and make sure you know exactly what you are buying.

You can't find instructions for it because you can't unlock the bootloader on the Verizon branded Pixel 5. Sorry

Interesting. I have, it's not difficult. They just don't post it in the forums.

Yes, it is. Stop acting like anything is impossible. You can switch this feature on, and off. Easily.

You can't just say that with no proof and think anyone will take it seriously. So prove it, we're all ears.
Hell, if that were true, I would ONLY buy Verizon phones

Provide instructions then. You just saying it can be done without providing them is a moot comment.

Time to put up or... well you know. Posts like these will send new users on a wild goose chase attempting to gain root/bootloader unlock on their devices purchased from Verzion and end with them being unhappy that they can't.

Not if you truly know what you're doing. A few years ago people stopped posting about hacks and just share with a few friends. That way, they can't fix those problems. It was figured out back on the Pixel 2 they search these forums, we'd do hacks then be fixed in the very next update. You can think this and that is impossible, but you are sadly wrong. You can enable the OEM unlock on Verizon models, yes you can!

Still not buying it. It has always been a game of cat and mouse when you're talking about going around security features of a device. Unless the flaw was in hardware, it was almost a given that the device would be updated and the vulnerability patched out. Second if some people did know how to unlock these devices they would almost certainly offer unlock services of some sort or there would be no point in keeping the information secretive.

So what's the point of posting this if you're not going to offer any guidance on how to do it other than essentially saying you have to know "someone".
It's sad how things like this can become so twisted and turned and convoluted. It doesn't do any good does it? None that I can see.
I'm guessing, but anyone talking about a vzw being unlockable is probably referring to someone who got a vzw 'in the box', unopened and never activated.
I just got a pix3 in that condition, and yes, remove vzw sim, boot up minimal except connect wifi, enable dev and turn on oem unlock... it does work.
But the key is 'never activated'. It seems pretty clear that what happens when u buy from vzw, they won't give u the phone without activating it. So it has to be old stock, unsold, vzw is trying to move out of their warehouses.
cheers

If you know how to hack, you know how to do this. Am I going to give a step by step guide? No, I'm not going to sit back and give them the information they need to know. Simple as that. I'll keep hacking every Pixel that comes out, directly ordered from Verizon.

Nothing about that statement is correct, sorry. It's been proved time and time again.

What's your definition of "hack"?
If you really can do this, why don't you offer to do it for people? I'm sure more than a few would be happy to throw you some $$ to get their Verizon devices unlocked. I did this back in the days of the HTC devices when a Java card was the only bootloader unlock method. You'd also get less blowback than effectively saying "Nah nah I know how to do this but I'm not going to tell you."
