Will a carrier based Note 8 950F be able to flash a non carrier official firmware? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Long story short. I have purchased a brand new imported UK Galaxy Note 8 SM-N950F. Upon opening the brand new box, I got nothing out of the ordinary. Booted the phone and what do you know? It's locked on Vodafone UK... (it didn't accept my Vodafone RO sim for some reason). Talked with the guy, the guy freaked out because he sent me the wrong device and told me I'll get a phone unlock code within the next 3 days.
After I'll unlock the device, I wonder. Can I flash a normal, non bloated BTU firmware onto the phone over the UK VOD firmware that's currently on it? I adore the device but I ****ing hate being stuck with carrier **** especially knowing that Samsung is slow with updates and it being a carrier based firmware, it will be slower also. On my old S8+ I did the same.. worked like a charm, Knox not tripped, phone was running stock non bloated firmware and to this date is receiving updates normally and is working properly.
I heard that Samsung has decided to region lock the devices from S9 forward (or was it Note 8?) but I'm not worried as I like the UK firmware.
TL;DR: Got a Note 8 UK Vodafone locked phone. Can I flash over the UK VOD firmware, a normal BTU firmware?

I am asking strictly because I heard that the Note 8 might be region locked and that could maybe interfere with my plans.

its not region locked.

Yes, you can!
And I wouldn't worry about the region lock. Because UK and Romania are both EU countries and the region lock is enforced for the greater EU area.
This is what it shows on Eu Region Lock devices.

Which version of the Note did I get ?

Hi Guys and Gals
Was just looking through all the Roms etc.. (more over the Official ones)
and I am not sure which model of note I got sent
I bought it on contract from Dial-a-phone and it was unlocked out of the box.
It did a few updates the day I bought it.
But I'm curious as to which version I got.
More for when ICS does finally get released and hopefully I'll be one of the first not having to wait for Country / Carrier updates.
My phone shows

Which version / country is this for etc...
Is it Europe or Open Europe or some other country that Dial-a-phone got their stock from
by the way what is the difference between Europe and Open Europe ?
I'm not sure which one I should be going by as I have the following -
a baseband that says
N7000XLA4
A Kernal that has N7000XXLA6 in it
and Build number of Gingerbread.XXLA6
I am in the UK by the way
I know when I had my Galaxy S2 I flashed that to open Europe to get rid of the O2 Carrier Garbage
So Don't mind if I have to flash my Note to another one to benefit from a Quicker update to ICS when its released
Though there is no Carrier Bloatware on this at all.
Thanks
Dean
Hi there,
I think you are using the Europe Build.
The difference between the Europe and the Open Europe Build is simple:
Open Europe= It's leeked for developers, this Build includes dev tools
Europe = Build for users
That's why I think you are using the Europe Version. I don't think you bought a developers Note with the Open Europe Version. I don't know if this Build is sold at all.
Ok, sounds good then.
Hopefully the Europe version will get an ICS update first being as there's no carrier to wait for.
But then again I have read the UK Unlocked/Sim Free Galaxy S2 is still waiting as apparently Samsung want the carriers to do theirs first and see if any issues come up before they release a Sim Free update as these get used on all networks..
One can only hope this won't be the case with the Note..
europe version
I got the same as you

Firmware Country Variants A715F/DS

Hello,
Sorry if this has been asked, but i can't seem to find the same question anywhere else.
I have a Samsung Galaxy A715F/DS (vietnam) branded International Unlocked Phone, but i live in the USA... I see many firmware updates for this phone at SamMobile site, Is there a firmware i can use that will allow the phone to be more compatible for the USA use? and is it possible to flash a different country firmware with the same model number on this phone instead of using the Vietnam version? i'm well familiar with flashing firmwares, i'm just not familiar with different county firmware updates. Help please any suggestion or advice would be appreciative. Thank you

And what exactly is "the USA use"? You use it sideways over there?
Have the same version of the phone with XME (Malaysia) firmware installed. Try out the firmware TGY (Hong Kong) and no problem encounter. The only different is that different countries have their own type of software packages. Hope this help.

Samsung apps are based on the country code of your firmware. I'm interested in changing Samsung Pay so MST works because right now I am on UAE firmware and MST did not work when registering with the UAE version of the app. My rewards/offers for SPay are also in their currency, not US, so for now I am using Google Pay because I don't want to wipe my phone and try a bunch of different firmwares. Samsung's country codes make all this very complicated.
If someone has found a firmware compatible with USA Samsung Pay and US Samsung apps, please share.
Good day! Could somebody help me with my A715F/DS? After I updated via OTA, it bootloops and all other firmware from SamMobile is not working though ODIN - PASS but after reboot, the bootloop issue still exist. I attached all the firmware I used to flash via ODIN.

Question Flashed BTU Firmware However Carrier Logo Remains!

My S21 Ultra purchased new from Amazon arrived earlier, however what I noticed was that during setup was prompted to install operator resources, which could not be bypassed. I initially presumed it was because I had my sim in, so factory reset and re-installed without the sim, but same deal.
Weird that the s21 ultra from amazon (was brand new) came with three.co.uk Carrier branding.
Anywhoo I downloaded the latest unbranded firmware
Download Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra SM-G998B BTU United Kingdom G998BXXS3BULC firmware
Fast download latest Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra firmware SM-G998B from United Kingdom with G998BXXS3BULC and Android version 12

and it flashed without a hitch. However on rebooting the Carrier logo is still there
What am I missing?
PS - This thread is the same issue Im having
S21ultra Three carrier branding (power animation splash screen)
Tried everything can think of to remove three carrier branding used odin and a btu with the csc not home csc and reset. Still it pops up as soon as your setting phone up like its partition into the phone. Will not let me unselect it even though theres tick box its greyed out. I cant stand the...

I gave up and started a return back to Amazon. Shouldn't have arrived brand new from Amazon with carrier branding on it!
It depends, IMHO, on what the Amazon seller promised you: just an unlocked or an unlocked & unbranded device. Branding is done in factory by Samsung.
Not necessarily anything wrong with a branded phone. It can/should still be brand new. You may only be bothered by the bootlogo on startup (look away) and Three-related apps can be deleted or switched off/disabled.

SInce around August 2020 it has not been possible to change CSC code by flashing via ODIN.
There is a paid-for service on "SamKey". Do a search.
when using samkey, u have to remove sim cards, then change csc via samkey,
once done, download BTU firmware, use odin, remember to go to recovery format and clean cash
and your good to go
Thanks peeps for all the replies, extremely informative
Received the replacement yesterday, decided to bump up the storage from 128 to 256gb.
Thankfully on boot and shutdown no more carrier branding on the replacement device!

Typically, in the US, the U1 version will change CSC when you install a working SIM from a different carrier. Of course, this won't work for you since you won't have a US carrier SIM. There may be ways to force-change the CSC on Snapdragon, but I haven't found them to work.
What's weird is that your phone already appears to be a multi-CSC ROM (you can see this in the "XAA" for the CSCs there). So you don't need a new ROM, but you still need to find a way to actually force the switch. I'm not sure if that's possible.
Note that per your CSC, this was originally a VZW (Verizon) phone, and is only "currently" an SPR phone... because it doesn't see a matching CSC to work with.
Anyway, all that said, I don't believe USA phones can have native call recording either. USA laws are crazy in this regard, so I don't know if any ROM will allow that here. That being said, I have been using BoldBeast recorder on my Android 11 phone and it works great. I do believe it won't work on A12, which is part of the reason I have not upgraded my phone to A12. You may want to give that a try, anyway, to see if it can work?

i think because the company unlocked the phone for the user after he paid the full price
before that the device was locked to their career

S20 FE 5G still on android 11. Can I update without rooting the phone?

I've bought this phone second hand online a year ago and I thought since it's not declared as stolen on IMEI it would be fine.
From what a guy told me it's from france so it's probably connected to a carrier from there, but I haven't figured out how to check myself.
I'd like to know if there any way to get the update without breaking functionality of the phone, like google pay, bluetooth or other issues i've usually had with rooted phones in the past.

It's worth mentioning I tried updating using smart switch and it didn't work.
you can download firmware suitable for your location and flash it with Odin all without triggering Knox, you can even keep your apps but with such a big jump your cache will need wiping afterward from recovery.
if you look in settings / about phone / software info / service provider software version. you should see 3 letters being listed there 3 times. that your (current) CSC code, googling that will tell which network or country the phone is from. you also need to find out the CSC version you want to download for your country. don't pick a CSC for your network, pick for your country.
Looks like your carrier tag is SFR, so if you search for firmware with model: SM-G781B and country: SFR, you will find firmware for it with Android version 13.
You can use:

After you get firmware downloaded use Odin to install it. You can use this Medium article.
It is very simple to use tool. (In CSC field use HOME_CSC file to keep your data)
