back to stock - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Hi! I recently purchased the Moto x4 and was wanting to root to get rid of ads, do a little audio tweaking, etc, etc. My question is does anyone know of a guide or does anyone have instructions on how to flash back to stock if I should need? Also, regarding taking Google security updates, how would one take an update after root? Relock bootloader and take ota? Any help would be appreciated. I see there isn't much info for our device in these forums. Tia

Tmobile Moto-x 4.2.2->root->4.4

I just received my Moto-X today with Android 4.2.2.
It wanted to do an OTA update to 4.4 which I postponed.
I'd like to get root, then apply 4.4 and keep root. For now I'm not looking to run a custom ROM, I just want to be able to use Titanium Backup, Adblock and things like that.
Please let me know what's the best way to do this.
Thanks!
Mark
Lucky, mine came with 4.4. Seems like a pain to root.
Unlock the bootloader, flash twrp and get superuser. Seems like the easy route to take for you.

Thanks very much for your help!
I have rooted my last three phones before so I am not a complete noob. That said, I have done it so infrequently, I really appreciate the help or any detailed instructions so that I don't go and brick it.
Here's what I found out. Please let me know what I've forgotten or misunderstood:
1. Get bootloader unlock from Motorola. Even though I don't have a dev edition, they will provide this to me because I have a paid-for TMobile Phone. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b
2. Moto-X TWRP from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2424110
3. For Superuser, I found http://dottech.org/126773/how-to-root-moto-x-android-guide/ this is for CWM but I'm thinking it should still be good for TWRP?
Did I miss anything there?
Can I take the OTA updates included 4.4 or need to do something else manually?
Thanks much!

Dev edition and T Mobile are the same. One thing though. It is recommended to use the Motorola Fastboot Utility. Though you won't keep root if you're on 4.2 by doing this method. So unlock the BL then take the OTA update. After that flash TWRP and then install superuser. And you're good to go.

EU XT1052 OTA, some guidance please?

Hi there, I have a stock retail EU Moto X (XT1052) and this morning I got the notification that there was a system update.
My phone is 100% factory so my bootloader is locked and I am not rooted, but I know how to unlock and root
My question is if I unlock and root would the OTA be useful to devs here? if so where and how to I capture the update and considering how may other users have reported issues with battery life etc what is the best method to return back to 4.4.2?
Thanks guys

Well, first this is already being discussed here (as well as some info regarding the changes / battery life in the new update):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/moto-x-g-e-4-4-4-kitkat-rollout-t2805645
You can feel free to read through that thread, and address any questions, concerns, and/or comments there.
Second, other users have already been kind enough to share all of the OTA files, so that would be unnecessary. A kind offer, however. :good:
OK, thanks
I must admit I did not see anything about the EU 1052 OTA but I suppose after waiting so long I could have missed it
Cheers
If you have the OTA file to share (you can only pull it off your phone if you are rooted), it wont hurt, even if someone else has shared it.
Just make sure you say exactly what phone it is for (carrier and model).
If you do unlock your bootloader and root to get the file, just remember you'll need to flash stock recovery back on your phone to take the OTA (please use the stock recovery from the ROM currently on your phone... If you don't have it, visit http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 download the SBF that matches what is on your phone, and unzip it. the stock Recovery.IMG is inside it)
OK, I've got the Blur_Version.161.44.16.ghost_row.Retail.en.GB.zip
I have taken a quick look around but I can't see anything, is there a specific OTA thread I can add to? if not which is the best section to add to?
Thanks

The link I posted for you in Post # 2 would be the best place for it. That is where the 4.4.4 roll-out discussion is taking place, and it is also where all of the other OTAs have been posted. That one IS already in there, though.

[Q] a few questions

Hi
i bought the nexus 6 32GB unlocked from google, it came with 5.0 then i got an update for 5.0.1 and now i decided to root my nexus 6, no rom, kernel change, just root, so i used the nexus toolkit to unlock the bootloader, so now i have busybox installed, and root.
now i want to update to 5.1 via OTA but when i check for updates there are no updates, could it be because of root or unlocking bootloader?
and i use t-mobile but the phone is factory unlocked so should i install the t-mobile version or just ignore the t-mobile versions?
Hi, you have a few options available. I don't use or recommend the use of toolkits unless you have some basic knowledge of fastboot and ADB. However, I believe you can use the toolkit to accomplish what you're trying to do. Also, I would recommend, because you're already unlocked, to just manually install the factory image via fastboot. As long as you don't flash user data, you won't loose any data. So in essence, it's like taking the OTA. Most of all, I recommend that you read as much as time allows so you know what you're going into.
Once you root you are not able to take any OTAs. To take an OTA you would have to go back to pure stock and stay there. If you would like to keep root there are many threads in this forum that walk you through the process of updating. Hope this answered some of your questions.
Thanks guys,
im familiar with android, ADB and fastboot, never had to use it much, this is my first nexus device but i have worked with many android phones in the past
im just trying to figure out the nexus 6
thanks, i got an answer i will go from here

Can I Take any verizon updates go back to previous versions for future possbl Unlock.

Does anyone know if I can take the current Verizon software update From Sept 1st NRD90M.G950USQU1AQGL. I Will I be able to revert back to the original stock OS version with Odin if I update it? Does SamPWND work on this or any updated OS software. I would like to get an update to allow me to use Bixby voice, the stock Rom is missing that, is there any safe update to take.
Reason I ask is that normally you need to stay on the original stock OS or downgrade if there is ever a bootloader unlock method ever found. I tried looking for this kind of info couldn't find it. Usually there is a thread with stock roms with this info but I can't find any. Any suggestions?

I took the first 2 Ota updates and flashed back to original firmware without problems before I switched to unlocked firmware. Sorry for the late response.

You should have no issue doing so as long as they don't mess with the bootloader

Updating XT1925-6 without losing root.

Hello,
Please, I was wondering if someone could help me on how to update stock 8.0 rooted moto g6. I don't want to lose root. I have flashfire but I don't know where the phone stores the Ota once it downloads it.
Thanks.

You can't
You have to flash to stock. Then reroot. I wouldnt recommend using flashfire unless a guide on here has said to. these devices are a little advanced to root so you must read everything also. No skimming please.
Is there a reason you can't re-root after OTA?
