[HowTo] The Safest Way to Disable All Bloatware on Your Galaxy S9 or S9+ - Samsung Galaxy S9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Carrier-branded Galaxy S9 models come with a ton of bloatware that you usually can't get rid of without rooting. With a little digital elbow grease, however, there is a way to disable bloatware on your S9 or S9+, and it's a lot safer that attempting to root and modify you precious device.
Package disablers are a great way to disable useless bloatware and free up RAM on your smartphone. Unfortunately, they can be a little dangerous to use, as carelessly disabling the wrong package can cause your S9 to act erratically or even freeze up entirely. Thankfully, there's a safe and painless way to disable over 120 bloatware apps and packages thanks to XDA user BAYmustafa96.
Step 1Download the Bloatware Remover File
First up, you'll need to download an XML file which automatically disables bloatware apps by way of BK Package Disabler for Samsung. The file was originally created by BAYmustafa96, but we've edited it to clean things up a bit and make it even safer. So to start, tap the following link from your Galaxy S9 or S9+.
Download the modified XML file for BK Package Disabler
Step 2 Install BK Package Disabler for Samsung
Now it's time to download BK Package Disabler (Samsung) by WakaSoftware. You can either go to the Play Store and do a search, or simply tap on the link below to purchase the app. Please note that BK Package Disabler needs a companion app to function, so don't open it just yet and proceed to the next step.
Install BK Package Disabler (Samsung) for $2.49 from the Google Play Store
Step 3 Install BK Plugin 2
Because of some changes by Samsung, BK Package Disabler for Samsung requires a separate add-on app to fully function. Don't worry, however, as its sister app, BK Plugin 2, is totally free to download. Once again, feel free to either do a search on the Play Store, or head to the link below.
Download BK Plugin 2 for free from the Google Play Store
Step 4 Grant BK Plugin 2 Administrator Privileges
Before opening BK Package Disabler for Samsung, you'll need to grant its sister app administrator privileges. Open BK Plugin 2 to get the ball rolling, then simply tap on "Activate It" within the initial setup prompt. You'll now be taken to a Device Administrator page, so tap on "Activate" to finish setting up. You can now open BK Package Disabler and proceed with de-bloating your S9
Step 5 Disable Bloatware
Now that you've got both BK Package Disabler and BK Plugin 2 installed and enabled, go ahead and open the former, then tap on the three-dot menu icon on the upper-right corner of the screen. From there, select "Import from XML."
A popup window will now appear, so tap on "Import from XML," then tap on "Select Path" on the prompt that appears. Next, head to the Download folder to retrieve the XML file you downloaded earlier.
Within the "Download" folder, tap on the XML file and select "Import" in the prompt box. The XML file will now proceed to automatically disable more than 120 bloatware apps for you. You'll be taken to the app's main page when it's done, so scroll down and verify by looking for bloatware that's been checked off and disabled. You're now free to exit the app after, and go on with the rest of your day.
Please bear in mind that this process is automated, so be sure to carefully check for frequently used apps —like Bixby, Adapt Sound, and Photo Editor — that might've gotten disabled. If that turns out to be the case, just open the BK Package Disabler app, scroll through the list and find the app you're missing, then simply tap on the box next to it re-enable it.

I had this installed on my S8+, however, with my new S9+ I am getting an activation error when both apps are downloaded from Google Play. "Version 1.1.5: Fail: Invalid package name...." Anyone else having this issue, and if so, how did you fix?

Yep, with BK Disabler. I've tried it every which way, even hanging upside down and it still hasn't worked. Same error each time.

This is very weird, i just uninstalled and re-installed and didn't get the issue. So pretty much the BK disabler, then i download the BK plugin 2, and works just fine, I enable the permissions and good to go!

Also just to clarify I am using the "BK Package Disabler (Samsung) by wakasoftware and it is on version 2.4.2
Then the BK plugin 2 is by MobizSystems and that's the version 1.1.5

Is there some way I can reset the permissions so I can accept again? (I don't know, just shooting stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks.)
Edit: I'm on the same version and with the same dev.

Maybe a difference between exynos and snapdragon?
Which one have you got?

I have the Sprint S9+ so it is the Snapdragon version. I had to do a factory reset a couple of times to activate my S9+. Using the Samsung transfer with the cable plugged into both devices caused the S9+ activation to fail so after another factory reset I reinstalled via Google cloud and Samsung cloud. Not sure if it was a related to being a S8+ Oreo beta tester or not. Never had root on the device. I am using the "BK Package Disabler (Samsung) by wakasoftware version 2.4.2, and the BK plugin 2 is by MobizSystems version 1.1.5.
WORKING: Anyway, I was able to install BK Package Disabler (Samsung) by doing the "owner" steps shown when the BK Disabler failed, and BK Disabler is WORKING. However on my lockscreen I have a "This device is managed by your Organization" message. BK is working, but i dislike the lockscreen message. I discovered that I cannot backup/restore my system from either Google Cloud or Samsung Cloud....Have not tried another factory reset.
I also tried a different disabler called "Package Disabler Pro (Samsung)" as an alternative and it too failed.
I think the issue is the Snapdaragon variant is causing the activation error on any of these disablers. Has anyone tried to reach out to the app owner to see if they know about this?

Snapdragon.

If we cannot disable, maybe we can uninstall. Yes I know we dont have root, but maybe this would work as an alternative: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/.
The Reddit page the above references is located at https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/6ftg72/want_to_completely_disableuninstall_those_pesky/

Sure you could do it with ADB (no root needed).
But its laborious

I just used package disabler pro. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdp.singleplay

I agree. I don't want to go this route, but may be an alternative. I had emailed the app owners to make them aware. I believe the activation failure has to do with the Snapdragon processor.

What processor do you have? Snapdragon is U.S., and non-U.S. has the Exynos.

I bought is, and I can confirm it does work on the Snapdragon version of the S9+. Only sucks that I had bought the other 2 disabler apps mentioned in this string earlier did not work.
Not sure the .XML file mentioned in the initial post can be imported .

I've used the "S8 Delboat Bloatware Thread" on the T-mobile S9. It worked. This method doesn't uninstall officially but it removes them for USER 0. I didn't need to download a app to remove bloatware. I still got the tmobile update. So it's fine for me.

Exynos version here on S9 plus, getting the same error when trying to activate the license: Fail: Invalid package name.

Weird guys.
Some Exynos works some not.
Some SNapdragon works. Some not.
Can't explaint at the moment sorry.
WIll try to investigate whats the problem is when i am home.

This didn't work for me either, however, I was able to make Package Disabler Pro + (had to purchase unfortunately) work, and it is able to import the same xml file as well

Package disabler pro worked for me. Imported the XML, but it was very "aggressive". Disabled chrome, YouTube, and a lot of other usefull stuff that I would not consider bloatware.

Magisk Hide not working for Pokemon Go

I'm using a Galaxy S8, Android 7.0, Magisk 16.6. When I try to play Pokemon go, it gives me the "OS not supported" message. The 16.3 fix didn't work back when it came out and I haven't been able to play since then. I did check the app in Magisk Hide and I activated the setting to hide Magisk Manager with a random package name, but it still doesn't work. Is there anything else I should do?
The only thing you can do that will work is to completely uninstall magisk. That should let you play pokemon go.
Pokemon also looks for a bunch of known root apps on your device, not only Magisk. And MagiskHide can't hide other apps.

There are a whole bunch... Busybox installers, system cleaners, etc. There's an old list available somewhere in the Magisk PoGo thread (search), but that list might be outdated. Easiest thing is to uninstall some root apps and see if it works better.
An easier alternative, if you have the means to do it, is to use a clean spare phone/tablet for Pokemon Go, and keep your phone how you need/want it for everything else. Bluetooth data sharing is enough bandwidth to make PoGo work.

Sure.
Make sure you have Pokemon on the Hide list.
Hide the Magisk Manager (in the Manager settings)
Delete the MagiskManager folder on your internal storage (next time you download/install a module through the Manager the folder will be recreated).
Edit: There will likely be an update to Magisk that will hide the MagiskManager folder. But for now this is a workaround.

Hmmm, tried all this, but still PoGo will not comply, even when I sandbox it in the work profile. (island app) The latter sounds a bit strange to me, as it should limit access to anything. (Magisk Manager gets installed, but is hidden)
To be honest, PoGo is just a test for when they start messing with Ingress as well. When it's getting to much trouble to have the app behave, it's out. They are just games, nothing to compromise my device for.
Also rename or delete every file or folder on your internal storage / sdcard that contains "magisk"

Any file? Not only the directory, but one that can be found somewhere on the device/external sdcard? (Like Magisk-v16.7.zip which you need to install it...)
Strange it should see it when sandboxed.
You can try, someone else said so, I did also do it and had no problem anymore so far.
But you should be right, that when its sandboxed it should not see it anyways...

Before using the hide magisk manager option, make sure magisk manager is NOT a system app. This will successfully repack magisk manager.
Then delete magisk fodler from internal storage and hide PoGO.

May be other ROMs come with integrated Magisk. That was the case in mine. Convert it to user app first.
Then try magisk hide again and look for the package name in app info (It should be something random). Then continue with other steps as it is and it should work fine.
Let us know how it goes
Hi togehter,
if you use the Fake GPS Route, then uninstall via TWRP Magisk and then works PoGo (new version) perfekt, that works with my Samsung S5
I have a problem with my Samsung S7 edge, if I uninstall Magisk, then I have the problem, that the S7 go to a bootloop <--- Have anyone a idea?

SecurePatch 01.12.2016
TWRP Recovery
If I install Magisk again, then boot the Samsung S7 without a bootloop, but then dont work PoGo
Xamel
Uninstall in the magisk app not by flashing a zip in recovery
Before I rooted my XZ premium I played pokemon go Just fine, afer Just enabling developer options (still locked bootloader and not rooted) it did not work Annymore, switching off developer options fixed pokemon go again.
Now with properly rooted Phone with magisk busybox, and whole bunch of rooted apps I am stuck as wel.... bonkers!!! !!
Could someone find a solution?

Well, it doesn't. I'm experiencing the same.
i am using it on pie. is really frustrating the app update by itself.
SWITCH OFF AUTO UPDATE IN PLAYSTORE ARE NOT WORKING AT ALL.
detach in TB is NOT WORKING also.
but version on nougat doesn't have this issue, maybe google did something fishy on PIE?
I guess you should ask for help in the dedicated threads for Youtube Vanced instead of creating a new thread for this.

Same in Oreo. Never had problem with Nougat.
I installed it just like the OP, it would detach but play store would attach youtube back on the update list by itself every night. When the phone is restarted the detach module in magisk will detach it again, but the next morning, play store would put it back on the list.

I've been trying to figure out this issue for a while.
Basically issue for me is on Google Pixel XL and now Pixel 3 XL and my friends Moto x4, all on both Android Oreo and Pie... Using Magisk repo install and uninstalling stock YouTube, and then adding enable_detach empty file in cache folder in root along with turning off "Enable auto update" in Google play store for YouTube . Usually this works for a few weeks but every now and then it ignores it and updates itself and turns on auto update without user explicitly allowing it. (Says YouTube was just updated).
I can easily fix it by uninstalling updates again but my friend doesn't know how to do this easily. I also tried to remove YouTube forcefully with titanium backup from system app and detaching months ago but that caused a lot more problems. Currently it gives option to attach to market forced despite it still showing up in market saying update (and auto update off for it)
I wanted to understand the plz and settings.sh options if using specifically Magisk method 1 (Magisk repo). Or are those only if using the other methods under magisk and/or root only option (no Magisk)?
Use the Sudohide xposed module.
This Module will prevent apps from detecting other installed apps on your device. Settings are done on per app basis.
Steps to hide VancedYT (A) from Play Store (B):
1. Select app A in the main list a new list view will be launched
2. Tick the checkbox next to app B in the newly opened list view
3. Press apply to save and back to exist
4. Restart luncher or reboot the phone.
Slow down.
Detach using titanium backup WORKS
For me I could only press "attach to playstore"
So I did. After I got button detach.
It worked and removed it

He meant, some of the Samsung system apps doesn't show updates available in the Galaxy Apps store or Play Store. There are updates to certain apps, like the camera and dialer on APK Mirror, but when you download them and try to install them, it gives an error and says the app wasn't installed. That is his issue, that he can't update some of his apps.

Some of the apps you're trying to update, like the camera, can't be updated by side-loading or downloading an APK, because it's a system app. You can't update system apps. In the case of the camera, I wouldn't want to update that anyway, because even though it's a higher version, it's not necessarily meant for the Galaxy Note 8, because the "newer" versions remove the ability to use the optical 2x zoom, which I'm sure isn't supposed to happen. I think those are updated camera APKs for different models, maybe like the A- or J-series.
What you could do, if you are rooted, is to just replace the system APKs with the updated ones you downloaded, but I wouldn't recommend that, because sometimes the updates to system apps might also depend on updates to other library files which you don't get with the APK or can't download and then might cause some problems and issues.
As far as your question about Bixy and News Republic: I have no idea. I don't use Bixby, so I don't even know how it works.
