wifi calling - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I got a n950U1 unlocked note 8 ( not rooted) which is a snapdragon version. I am not living in the states but bought my mobile in my holidays and was wondering how to get wifi calling on this phone. My carrier has it available as i was using it on my previous mobile, and can still use if i use my sim in iphone. I heard that the t-mobile version has it but how can i activate the setting or get an apk which can enable this setting for me? Is the app completely missing or any secret setting needs to be enabled?
Or is there a different way to enable this feature? I know that the N950F version has it but why not this one? I wasn't aware that there are differences in such options.

Also unlocked N950U1 is able to use wifi calling.
If not yet upgraded to Oreo, you can enable Wifi calling in IMS settings, using Shortcut Master app. (Search this forum for thread)
Setting will then be in Phone/Calling app, not in the general phone Settings.
After Oreo I no longer can access the IMS settings, but luckily Wifi calling remained enable after FW upgrade.

I have tried to enable via shortcut master but the app itself to make wifi calling seems to be missing. There is no setting to enable in IMS settings

I also have SM-N950U1 and I have NEVER seen or found the WiFi calling in this device, regardless of version Nouget or Oreo. I have read also a few months ago that using Shortcut maker it "should" be able to work but I also have had no success with this. You are able to find bits and pieces of WiFi calling but no actual app for it to work.

As I stated, the setting is in the Phone / calling app. In Shortcut Manager look for "WfcPref".

Not really a solution but more of a bandaid , maybe resort to flashing the t mobile firmware if all avenues have been exhausted?

I also have checked that option but there is no actual app launching, it is all tutorials or help files. I suppose it is not included within the firmware. Or maybe it is because i haven't initialize it with a t-mobile sim card. I was just hoping that maybe there is some sort of apk app by which we can have it.
This is all i get in shortcut master

Just to add also the phone/ calling app screenshot and the connections/ more connections screen

Here is what i noticed.
Note: I'm on note8 exynos csc xme
I use dual sim.
Sim1 do not support wifi calling
Sim2 supports wifi calling
I have wifi calling setting to switch it on only when i switch everything to sim2, data messages and calls.

Unfortunately my phone is not dual sim but i am wondering if rooting the phone would help me to be able to have wifi calling?
Is there any way to fix this by rooting the phone?

It's restricted by 2 factors. Your telco and csc.
Obviously to have wifi calling ur mobile operator must support this and allow ur phone number to use this function.
Second is the csc of your phone. Some branded phone restrict this, they do it via csc code. U can look around on this forum there is ppl that manage to decrypt the csc files edit it and load it back. Root required for this.

Hi again,
My telco has it as i was using on my iphone. The problem is with the note 8, There is no functional app or apk for this when i do a search on shortcut master. After rooting will i be able to get the wifi calling app from somewhere after editing the csc?
Or is it much easier if i change the firmware with tmobile branded and then use my phone with it. Do you think i will get the app then by editing the csc file?
Or will it still not work as it is t mobile branded.
This is so annoying, it should have been much easier and with much more freedom, why is this wifi calling even missing as app, they already can disable if the telco doesnt support it. I never had such issue before

With Note 8 N950U1 you should have wifi calling without any problems.
Check with T-Mobile site how it works and what to do, i.c. check the requirements.. Did you put in 911 address?

Hi vash
My wifi calling is working well on sim 1 until I change this sim card to slot 2, then changed call/text and data to SIM 2,
(because I inserted SD card with 2 sim cards now, my another sim card was issued by another country, cannot get new one, so I cut the SIM 1 and moved to SIM 2)
Then wifi calling disappeared, it's gone..
Looks wifi calling will be working on SIM 1 only.

I'm sorry.
WiFi calling is working for SIM 2 as well.
Depends on the WiFi internet connection quality.

yup.. wanted to ask you to check internet connection quality. if the connection is not good wifi calling doesnt work. most of the time when i am overseas, hotel wifi is not good enough for wifi calling.. thus kind of useless for me.

Yes, thanks.
But probably not only internet quality, I think carrier will check some certificate or something.
Because no WiFi calling icon when I'm using the employee WiFi in office, I logon with my user name and password, and sometimes public WiFi is also not working for WiFi calling,

On the main screen click on bottom left call icon to make a call. Then go to setting on top right 3 dots down. You will see wifi calling enable or disabled. You can turn on or off. If it can help someone. I was looking everywhere and it didnt help, but eventually found it. It's not in connection and more setting like some place stated.

EE UK Wifi Calling

Hi folks, I'm having a bit of difficulty or confusion with wifi calling. I'm on EE but my phone is an XEU. There was a wifi calling option that didn't seem to do anything; no icon when enabled and no obvious network connection.
So I switched to the EVR firmware, wiped the phone and set up from scratch. Still got the same wifi calling option, still no icon or network activity with it enabled.
I don't seem to have VoLTE either, I would have thought the EVR CSC would enable that too?
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks.
I have been having weird issues too with a dual SIM version and EE Wi-Fi calling. Inserting a microSD card in second slot can sometimes disable Wi-Fi calling in that I don't even see the option for switching on.
Hopefully future firmware fixes these glitches as I'm really loving this phone after using iPhones for a few years .
Jake
Wifi calling and VoLTE enabled itself after a serendipitous restart today.
Did your wifi calling ever actually work without an EVR CSC or firmware @ajdjackson ?
Edit: Looks like EE had some stuff to set up on my account, problem was at their end. My account says they're setting up roaming and could take up to 24hrs so something has happened to instigate these changes.
Anyway, now I'm really wondering if I need to EVR firmware at all. Samsung's multi CSC system should allow EE's wifi calling but EE would insist that it doesn't. Can anyone chime in?
Yes - strangely mine seems to working OK now even with the sd card in second sim slot. I haven't flashed any firmware at all.
Jake
Right, after a switch back to XEU I can confirm that EE Wifi Calling does work on a non EE phone but VoLTE does not!
So I switched back to EVR and everything's working fine again.
Quite surprising since EE have always insisted that Wifi Calling is exclusive to phones supplied by them, yet I've never read the same about VoLTE.
Hiya,
Just thought I'd share my experiences...
Like you, I'm also on EE and again like you my NOTE 8 is an XEU SIM free model, in my case from CPW. I found the same issue in that the wifi calling option could toggle on and off but the setting didn't seem to do anything; no icon when enabled and no obvious network connection.
I phoned EE on 150 for support but all they could suggest was to reboot my router at home even though I told them I also have a "work's" mobile phone (iPhone 5c) also on EE and that combination does have working wifi calling.
I decided to try a test to determine if the issue was with my Note 8 handset or with my new EE 4G SIM by swapping SIM's between the two phones. The work SIM worked immediately by activating wifi calling in my Note 8. My personal SIM was active in my works iPhone for approx. 2-3 minutes with no signal before a pop-up message appeared asking if I wanted to activate wifi calling. I obviously selected 'Yes' and when I swapped the SIM's back to their original handsets my Note 8 now magically works with wifi calling with the original SIM.
It's almost as if the menu item in the Note 8 for toggling wifi calling on and off doesn't activate the sim card even though the graphic animates to show the function activated.
Anyways, I now have a Note 8 with working wifi calling.
Hope that helps anyone else with similar issues involving EE wifi calling.
*EDIT* Hehe looks like my signature is a little out of date.
S.
Thanks Steve. Do you have VoLTE? I can't get that working without swapping the firmware for the EVR specific one.

Hmm I don't know. I know that I have 'Mobile Networks' setting 'Network mode' set to 'LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)' as opposed to the other settings of '3G/2G (auto connect)', '3G only' or '2G only' but how can you tell if a voice call is routed over 4G? Does a special icon appear as in the case of wifi calling? Hard for me to say as I have zero signal at home and very poor signal at work so in both cases my Note 8 defaults to wifi calling.
Have you tried calling EE to check if VoLTE is only supported on branded firmware as opposed to generic XEU? I know that in the case of wifi calling their website is very explicit in stating that wifi calling is not only supported on EE branded/sourced handsets but also works on certain generic handsets such as S8 / S8+ & Note 8. Their website on VoLTE or as EE term the service '4G calling' is not so clear...

http://ee.co.uk/help/phones-and-device/wifi-calling
http://ee.co.uk/help/phones-and-device/4g-calling
This EE Community Forum post seems to lay the blame at Samsung's door as opposed to EE's...
https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/4G-and-mobile-data/VoLTE-on-Samsung-Galaxy-S8/td-p/559521
Reading the thread fully, it seems VoLTE is only available on EVR and not XEU.

Yes, this shows the VoLTE icon which appears whenever I have no wifi or I disable wifi calling.

The discussion on EE you linked is interesting, so they do limit VoLTE to their own supplied phones. I'd recommend switching to an EVR firmware, despite the guy who says there's no advantage for the user, I've found VoLTE very useful, especially in conjunction with Wifi calling. VoLTE/Wifi calls are so much clearer, they can seamlessly switch if you lose the wifi signal and they seem to connect a bit quicker too.

Ahh there is a symbol, thanks for sharing the picture. I can confirm that do not get VoLTE and whilst it would be good to have every function that I pay for working the fact that I get zero 4G signal at home and at work where I spend 90% of my time means I'm not realistically going to miss VoLTE as my phone now has a working 'wifi calling' service. I suppose that if EE ever get round to providing coverage in the blackspot that surrounds my home location then I might consider swapping to EVR firmware. I won't hold my breath though because in the 20 years that I have lived at my current address, EE and Orange before them haven't bothered with trying to provide adequate cellular coverage.
I remember going through exactly the same crap with my Samsung Galaxy S2, Orange firmware got an app called signal boost and the vanilla xeu firmware didn't and we had to do a number of things to get the app ported over to XEU. Seems like no matter how much technology advances over the years some issues never change.:silly:

Tips for Getting Functional Wifi Calling on AT&T.

Since there have been a few posts about people wanting to get their non-AT&T S9 working on AT&T with all the advanced features, I figured I'd post some tips since I have 2 S9s that have been successfully converted.
1. You must come from a U1 firmware to the AT&T U Firmware.
2. Make sure your Sim Card is fairly new. I have had sim cards work in an older phone but not a newer one.
3. Have AT&T hard set the IMEI of a AT&T branded phone(that supports wifi calling). Do this by putting your sim card into the AT&T branded phone and call AT&T customer service and say your Wifi calling and HD Voice are not working.
4. Make sure Wifi Calling was active on the AT&T branded phone before moving the sim card to the S9.
Also make sure you have ATT csc installed. There are a few required apks that are in the odm folder. I was able to get it working on a SM-G965F
I wonder what else could be tried?
I have done all of the above coming off a brand new unlocked U1, flashed the U FirmWare with ATT User data file. I can actually setup WiFi calling on the new handset (it doesn't really work ,however) and about 10 minutes later I get a provisioning failed message.

Funny you should ask this. Up until last night I could swap the SIM into the old phone and WIFi calling would provision and work. I tried this morning and the old phone is now giving me the same "ooops... we cannot provision..." message. I was thinking bad SIM card again? It's 10 days old though.
EDIT: Chatted ATT and verified they have the old IMEI set from the old phone that had working wifi calling.

I will be at work tomorrow which is located near the ATT store also and at work I have access to a fiber fed service with WiFi for "Non Work" use that is great and I will try that. I have Gigabit CATV internet at home wired thru a Ubiquiti Router and POE Switch and using a MU-MIMO (UAP HD Nano) access point which gives me a 433mbps wifi link to my S9. At home, I also have a 1st GEN At&t Micro-cell which I have left unplugged in case that could be an issue.
If WIfi calling doesn't activate on the work wi-fi then I will grab another SIM card at the at&t store and try again.

Sounds like a plan. I wish I knew why wifi calling is such a pain, I could never get it to provision on my old AT&T uverse internet. I ended up provisioning my Dad's Galaxy S9 wifi calling via the hotspot my S9. If anyone you know would be able to hotspot their At&t phone that might let you provision wifi calling.
1. ATT must have a Samsung Branded ATT Phone's IMEI in the system, so that the features are allowed on your phone.
2. If you have U1, you need to use the U CSC, the U1 CSC breaks wifi calling and all other features that AT&T gives you.
3. If you are able to get root, and can see the system apps,
Under App Folder you need to have
UnifiedWFC
Vsimservice
Under Priv-App You Need to have
NSDSWebApp
WfcServiceV2
3. When you are trying to enable Wifi Calling Service, what happens when you click the wifi calling quick toggle.

Could not provision on my work wifi or my AT&T iPad hot spot wifi.
I went to the AT&T store and got another new SIM card. I then chatted 5 or 6 AT&T Cust Svc. agents and got one that re-provisioned the IMS features and set my IMEI from the S7. They now work on my ATT branded S7, but not on the unlocked S9.
Within 3 second of toggling the WIFI calling feature I get the "ooooops we cant turn on wifi calling, please have an authorized person call.........."
I flashed the HOME CSC when coming from U1 to U. Can I just flash the U CSC as is, or would it be better to flash back to u1 and then back to U with the proper CSC.?
It would appear I had several obstacles to getting this enabled.

LOL Failed again!!!
Flashed U firmware and ATT User Data file. Nothing works. Same message.
What is "...Also make sure you have ATT csc installed......?" I have not been able to find any FW that is AT&T for the U. Every other carrier, yes. but no AT&T.
SO I have flashed back and forth a few times this evening. I did not locate a specific "ATT" CSC file. I did find the ATT USerData file that places the WiFi calling option in the menu like always. So it looks like you can use IMS features on ATT as long as you have the ATT U Version or a Carrier U version variant.
However, If you have the U1 version then it is not possible to use these IMS features on ATT.
I think you can just flash straight to U make sure your sim card is in the phone. If it doesn't work, try factory reset and then flash U CSC
I forget are you able to root to see what system files you have?
You could probably update the phone to the newest U1 buold, but switch out the csc with the U.

All U CSC's include att CSC.
Not rooted yet. Looking forward to it. I'm on U FW now. I couldn't get the IMS features working but I strongly suspect its AT&T. If AT&T
Disabled and enables my IMS on their end then my S7 wifi
Calling works. So into my S9 the SIM goes, it allows me
To check my 911 address and begins to provision but usually
Fails within 10 minutes.
Then, from there on I get the standard "Oops we cant provision" error message on subsequent attempts. Which requires lengthy calls to ATT to disable & enable IMS again. This makes me believe that my S9 IMEI is getting checked and flagged, then IMS is disabled.
Out of the blue I got a forced ATT OTA update today that updated my FW to ARBI, now I see another pending software update waiting. For the new boot loader I assume.
I did try my MINT Mobile SIM and even on the ATT FW I got the IMS features to work, and toggle in the "secret" device info.
I thought I'd give it a go w/o rooting.
My auto-update OFF was overridden and I got pushed the G960USQS2ARF4 to my handset last night.......
US OR US1? Well you can flash the arf4 U CSC right?
So they have you with an ATT S7 ? PM me or telegram me at @Psyscope I'll give you an imei for s8 that will make sure you should have wifi calling provisioned for your account.
These three apps are needed do you have them when you go to Apps?

Sounds like you are running the latest AT&T firmware. If you put your sim into the S7 and call AT&T Customer service and report that Wifi calling isn't working(make sure they hard set the IMEI of the S7 to your account), then re-activate wifi calling on your S7 and then move your sim card into the S9, and try to activate wifi calling.

I get all of the activation responses and can even modify my Emergency Location dialog etc. , but no work with WiFi only or poor cellular area.

Question --- This is kinda what I've done in the past to get calling features on ATT but I do it by going to my AT&T Business portal (I'm a business customer) and changing the IMEI there. That has worked for me in the past by using an IMEI from a branded store model phone - lol
But I have had some issues ---- when the IMEI that I put in the billing portal doesn't match my actual phone that I'm using then When I go to Phone > Settings > More Settings > Call Forwarding I often get errors or can't set the provisional forwarding numbers (I used Youmail for Voicemail in the past and currently I have been (when Busy, Unreachable , or Unanswered) forwarding to my Google Voice phone number that now has a Google Voice over WiFi Beta program. The other issue is that setting the IMEI to another number messes up Call Forwarding with things like Samsung Gear (AT&T numberSync) ???
What exactly did you get the AT&T Customer Support to do when you called ? maybe its different than what I'm doing in my Business Portal
A different imei has no effect on forwarding, that's related to your sim card. The IMEi if it is an AT&T branded one you call them and tell then to update it to one that's linked to an att branded Samsung phone that is wifi calling capable.
In regards to the s7 edge you would need to extract the csc files from an odin. Then find a custom rom and move the files around. Are you using the an unlocked S7 edge u or F? Because ttkg has a CSC selector.

You know call forwarding rarely works that way. There is the feature
Where you manually setup forwarding.
Dial **21*, followed by the 10-digit number you wish to forward the calls to, then dial #. For example, **21*1235556789# forwards your call to 123.555.6789.

Any chance you could help me with those two files I'm missing --- assuming you are rooted ?

May update enabled WiFi calling on my SM-N950F/DS (T-Mobile)

I have an international (gold) unlocked dual SIM and I thought I was hallucinating today when my phone got the May Android update and suddenly there was an option for Wi-Fi calling in Phone settings. I didn't think it would work but it definitely is at least on T-Mobile as I see "T-Mobile WiFi Calling" when I pull down the notification shade and calls work in airplane mode (with WiFi on).
Super stoked as this definitely didn't work before. Anyone else see this?
Why didn't wifi call work before?
I have a n950f and a German t-mobile sim
Wifi calling always worked

Different device than my SM-N950F/DS. Samsung didn't enable WiFi calling in settings in the dial SIM model until now that is.
Good to know, thanks!
after updates it doesn't show on my call settings. did you do anything different?

Volte/WiFi calling

Hi, guys.
Just wondering if any of you have working VOLTE/WIFI calling on your Pixel 5.
I'm on Vodafone UK and none of these are working, I don't get the options for the two in Network settings.
Apparently, they are not provisioned ATM.
Have you had more luck with your operators?

all working for me on 3
Yeah, I had a feeling going with Vodafone is a mistake...
Working here with O2. They have a guide on the Vodafone website for the Pixel 4 so can't see why it doesn't work with the 5. https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk...ress the phone icon.&text=Press Wi-Fi calling.
Well, it's Vodafone. Apparently one of their geniuses has to add a line of code somewhere..
Anyway, the guide for P4 asks for activation from within the phone app's settings and the Wifi calling/Volte settings are missing from there on the Pixel 5.
On BT Mobile i have Wi-Fi calling after turning it on in the mobile network settings, the VoLTE option is also there, it is greyed out but set to the on position.

No VoLTE, tried it whilst out and about and the call quality was terrible after being used to it for so long.
I'm on iD mobile who use Three. I can see that volte and wifi calling have been provisioned and i have the option for turning wifi calling on but can't see an option for turning volte on.

Yup been through all the options and can't see it!
It seems it's different for every operator, I can only suggest to give ID a phone call..
I'm on 3, have no issues at all
Wifi Calling
works on my P5, also a 3 user
option is found under Settings, Network and Internet, Mobile Network, Advanced, Wi-Fi Calling
I'm on Vodafone and I don't have settings for WiFi calling either. Funnily enough when I got text message from Vodafone to download internet settings they didn't even have the pixel 4a/ 4a 5g or 5 on there.. so that's probably why people on Vodafone can't enable it because Vodafone themselves haven't added the phones on for WiFi calling
https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk/google/?type=all&topic=turn-wi-fi-calling-on-or-off
Check out this thread on Vodafone forum, will try it myself and see if it works

Okay so update for Vodafone users, I got it working.
Following the second link above, 1. Go into Vodafone app and turn off WiFi calling, restart phone. 2. Go back into Vodafone app and turn back on WiFi calling (wait for 3/5 minutes and then restart phone again (you should receive a text from Vodafone saying it's enabled on your account). 3. Go to call app > settings> calls>WiFi calling>enable.
It also shows on networking settings in advanced now too.
Now I'm connected to WiFi calling, hope this helps Vodafone users

I'm one of the persons that posted on that thread .
It works for me now. Just try the following:
On MyVodafone app, disable wifi calling and immediately restart the phone. Then enable it again and immediately restart the phone. The Wifi calling settings should appear on Settings/Network and Internet/Mobile network (Vodafone)/Advanced.
At least they have in my case.

Well thank you in that case, resolved that issue easily
Happy to help, it's fkin frustrating to be in your house with only edge signal, hardly able to have a phone conversation, waiting for Vodafone to do its job.

What an arse i am, turns out the other caller was using their phone on speakerphone, made a few calls since and VoLTE is working just fine on BT Mobile.
Neither is working for me as well, but was working fine on my old phone.
What I noticed on my device is that it came from Google with the "KDDI only" build on it(see https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-5/help/kddi-variant-t4178033), which I suspect might be related to the issue.

I don't think so. The model of my phone is RD1A.200810.021.A1. Let me guess, is this the same as yours?
PS: what network are you on?

Question Not seeing Network Preference under Enable Wifi Calling Tmobile USA

Hello
I just got this phone and set it up. Its a Global version 13.0.4 SKDMIXM.
I am on TMoblie USA - the phone is working great on LTE and 5G .
I am not able to see the Network preference under wifi calling where is can select Prefered Wifi Calling.
It appears that its running on default Prefered Cellular - because I can only see the VoLTE symbol on top.
Can someone help me in fixing this configuration to select Prefered Wifi Calling ? TIA

Hello, I'm using a 11T Pro Dual SIM India model with India SIM in Slot 1 and TMO SIM in Slot 2.
I have not found the specific setting to make Wifi Calling "Preferred" but, my phone does indicate Vo WiFi even when I have Wifi connected and Mobile Data turned on too once Wifi Calling is enabled as below.
Apparently the Voice Over WiFi Settings (at least here on my phone) only show up for SIM 1, does not show for SIM 2.
Attached are sample screenshots where the Settings are under SIM 1.
Steps to get there-
Settings > SIM cards & mobile networks > Click on SIM 1
All the way down, last Setting is "Wi-Fi Calls" to enable "Make calls using Wi-Fi".
Hope this helps.

Operators can disable this menu if they want to lock you onto Wifi preferred or cellular preferred. Does this only happen with this phone or does it also happen with the SIM in another Android phone?

There's a possibility of TMO-US not supporting WiFi calling on the Xiaomi 11T (Global), perhaps.
Although, I have been using various Unlocked phones (Nokia & Samsung) on TMO-US for the past few years & have practically never had issues with WiFi calling on any. Shall have to test it once I'm back. Won't be for some time.
Is your phone on the latest firmware? Try updating it to check if there's a new update available
which hopefully can solve your issue.
Couple of options to test, in case you have not already tested them-
a) leave WiFi Calling Enabled then disable the VoLTE feature and check if WiFi calling works?
b) disable Mobile Data, WiFi Calling enabled with WiFi connected and check if WiFi Calling works.
c) some users have had to ensure their E911 address is correctly in place on the TMO account too.

I had a working One Plus 6 - so I know TMO has VoWifi - I use it a lot due to poor reception at home .
The current workaround to force VoWIFI is
Turn On Airplane MOde
Turn ON WiFi only
then it works in VOWIFI with out any issues
I know I am missing a menu Item that can toggle this setting . I would prefer having that setting but its not a breaker for now . The phone works with all the Network features of TMO , LTE , 4G , 5G etc . No visual voicemail thats all.
Thanks

Thanks - this code is what got me to where I am now . I think from other articles - the mbn config may require some tweaking - but it refuses to give me access to it when i use *#*#663368378#*#*
Same access issue here too.
Wish you luck.
Pinging to see if there is a soln. in future.
