Strange network issues - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Got my P20 Pro yesterday and mostly seems really good but I'm having some network issues that I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on.
Connects to WiFi no problem, internet is all ok but apps that connect to devices on my local network aren't seeing the devices. Harmony is one of them - it scans my network but doesn't find either of my Logitech harmony hubs - if I add them via their up manually then it connects but then thinks they are on an external network so connects through the cloud.
My DS apps are also not able to find my Synology server when scanning - I can input the IP address and it will connect but the server never shows when scanning the network for devices.
Is it going to be that the apps are the problem and they don't work properly with the P20 Pro - I struggle to think that's the problem, it seems like a network discovery issue on the phone, some protocol thats disabled or some onboard firewall that's hidden that it blocking local traffic on certain ports?
Anyone with any ideas would be great as I'm at a loss right now and thinking the phone will have to go back if it can't do these basic things...

Allow location for those apps, it's a Oreo thing

Same problem
Hi, I also have this problem with my p20 pro where a lot of internal services are not reachable when I'm on wifi... For example my synology diskstation, my smart home system Loxone, my Logitech Squeezebox Server and so on... And not only from the apps, also not in the browser... This is very strange and I'm not sure why this is not working...

In Oreo no app whatsoever can scan wifi if not allowed location services.

Hi,
I'm still having these issues...when I do a traceroute for a local IP it just won't get a route / no hops. But....my DSL line dropped out this week and I had to physically disconnect my FritzBox from the DSL line and all of a sudden all the different apps facilitating local things worked like a charme....back online again it stops working again.
I'm in IT for over 15 years and I haven't found a solution for this yet...this is really bugging me!
Anyone else has similar issues or found a solution in the meantime?

Could you solve this problem?

SlingPlayer problems?

Hi all, I have a weird problem.
I have a tilt and am using the HTC rom, I connect to wifi in my apartment and 3G or HSDPA when I leave the apartment.
When I'm connected through wifi, my Slingplayer works flawlessly, finds my slingbox, and plays the video. When I try to connect outside using 3G/HSDPA, I get "Cannot connect with current connection settings"
I know the Slingbox is working correctly because I can connect to it through a desktop PC without a problem, and I know that the 3G works fine on my tilt because I have no problem loading websites, using mundi, etc.
Any ideas? I've seen a couple other posts on other forums with the same problem but there were no responses on them.
Thanks!
Can you connect to anything else when on 3G?
Try your proxy settings
Did you change the default ports on the SlingBox config?
Are those ports (default or modified) open from the outside of your firewall/router?
If you have the ability to monitor inbound connections try monitoring while you connect through 3G and see if your device attempts on the correct port and that it is NATed to the correct IP and port.

I had exactly the same problem with my Belkin router. You need to set up a port on your router in order for it to work. I know on mine it involved setting up a virtual server.
I am using the TyTN II and I am having the same exact problems. I think AT&T killed access to slingbox somehow. I can surf the internet just fine, and then as soon as I start the slingplayer, my connection gets lost and my phone says "cannot sonnect with current connection settings." Any help would be appreciated, especially with the World Series coming up this week.

Possibly a silly point but can you definitely connect over the internet to it? Or just over your LAN?
There's a wizard that enables the port forwarding for you - (called Remote Viewing or something?) should be with the software for the slingbox.
Could be that your desktop is just going direct over the LAN?
Also, I had problems when I was just using the automatic settings to configure the box - in the end it works far better if you ignore the UPnP stuff, and use the manual setup process (or so I found). Again, the desktop software wizard steps you through this.
If you can connect over wifi at home, but not over wifi or 3g when away, then unless AT&T are blocking the ports, its more likely your router settings, as at home you are inside your LAN but elsewhere you have to go through your routers hardware firewall.
Just have a look at slingbox's help files.
SlingBox works fine on AT&T. Check your proxy settings on the phone. Try the "remove hidden proxy" cab. The home router also needs an outgoing port defined as well. Good Luck, I know it can work.
I will bet that it's your router/firewall blocking the incoming net traffic. Try connecting to it from a Friend's internet connection or a public computer at the library or something.
Had a similar problem with slingplayer mobile on my new HTC TouchPro- phone from Vodafone but I put in my T-mobile SIM as I wanted to keep the Web and walk.
Slingplayer worked fine from Vario3 with same sim but not from TouchPro. Eventually unticked the use proxy server in the connection settings and it started to work. Weird, as on the Vario the proxy box is ticked and it works.
Anyway, worth trying if anyone else is having problems.
One of two things, either you have not port fowarded your router to allow the Slingbox to be remotly viewed, go to portfoward.com for exact instructions for your specific router, or your hidden proxy is messing with it. More than likley its not port fowarded correctly. BTW...when your in your home network, i.e... using WiFi, it will work without the router being fwded because your slingbox is already inside your home network. When coming from the outside of your home network through 3g or whatever your router has to allow access to the slingbox.

ATT Tilt/Kaiser WiFi Problems (SOLVED)

I just purchased the Tilt and love the features and possibilities, however I may be forced to return it if I cannot solve this problem.
I can connect the Tilt to my home WiFi network (Open/WEP) without any problems, and I can connect to several other APs (Open/Encrypted and No-Encrypt) without any problems.
In my office (where it'll be used the most) we use Cisco's lightweight access points with the WCS controller system. This system is configured with Open authentication and no encryption, and has a captive portal that you must login to in order to gain access to the network.
When I connect to this network, I stay connected for about 30-45 seconds (I can ping the Tilt from my wireless laptop for about that long), and then the Tilt stops responding on the network. The WiFi status says that it is reassociating with the network, but it never does. I can manually tell it to connect to the network, but that fails, too. While this is occurring, I can see all of the SSIDs (including ones not on the Cisco controller) that are available in our office, but cannot connect to any of those, either.
After a soft reset, I can connect to any of the other SSIDs with no problem until I try to connect to any of the SSIDs that are on the Cisco controller. After trying that, it repeats the same pattern and I must reset the Tilt before it will connect to any other access point.
I've actually done some wireless captures and cannot see any problems with the communication between the Cisco APs and the Tilt. It's just that after this "malfunction", the Tilt will successfully perform the normal 802.11 open-mode authentication, but will never proceed to the association phase.
I've talked to AT&T and HTC, and they told me my phone may be defective and to try a new phone. I've done that now, but it is still doing the same thing.
Has anyone had any similar experience?
Thanks!
This was a similar issue with my phone[Similar by reassociating with network, and soft reset], except it was on a campus[uses cisco] and not office! Basically i just had to register my kaiser's mac address with the school, and everything worked perfectly. Hopefully this helps!
That's an interesting observation. A campus network would be similar to my (large) office network.
Before you registered your MAC with the school, were you able to browse to anything?
I ask because our network doesn't require MAC addr's to be registered. It allows anyone onto the network as a "guest" and then you have to browse to a web page that lets you login to get Internet access.
But, the fact that you had to do a soft reset to get it working again is quite interesting, and points to a bug with WM6 or the device.
The Cisco WCS has some protection against DoS/etc. Maybe the tilt is doing something that's causing the WCS controller to think your device is a bad-guy and it places you on a blacklist. I think by default the WCS has a blacklist timer of about 5 mins... can't remember now. Could be what's happening though if after a reset you can't see the WCS SSID anymore.
That's a great point, too. We don't have any of the IDS/IPS functions that you're referring to turned on, but there's always those hidden features
We ran a quick test and watched the debug output of the WCS and didn't see any messages to indicate foul play.
It turns out that this problem was specific to Cisco's WLAN implementation. Cisco has a set of wireless extensions called CCX that are implemented on wireless devices (clients) to aid the infrastructure in managing the radio environment, location management, roaming, etc.
Apparently the WiFi chipset and/or drivers on the Tilt do not implement CCX (as 90% of other radios and drivers do), so when the WLAN sent a broadcast out asking for radio management reports, the Tilt's WiFi stack would just freak out.
We were able to work around this by disabling the CCX Location Measurement function in our Cisco 4400 series WLAN controller.
It would be nice to see an update from AT&T and HTC to fix this problem.
same thing happened to me.. same cisco wlse and same pda.. i also have to disable CCX. but it is quite useful feature of WLSE. i hope htc can fix it.

Anyone know if a new driver is part of WM 6.1? I am holding out for the official AT&T version but was just wondering since I have this problem with the wifi at school.

BT Home Hub (UK) - Unable to connect

I got my parents a Chromecast for xmas after getting one myself and being impressed with how simple it was to set up and use with Youtube, Plex, etc. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get it up and running with their BT Home Hub 4 router and keep getting an "unable to connect to internet message". I've seen various posts on other forums mentioning the following as possible solutions, none of which worked in my case:
disable UPNP (also disable UPNP extended security)
disable "Smart" setup
disable parental restrictions (already done)
split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into 2 separate SSIDs and only connect to the 2.4GHz one
I'm no expert on routers and networking so would be grateful if anyone else who's with BT in the UK has had similar issues and managed to find a solution they could share. I'd also like to move away from my current ISP whose recent service has been a joke and out of the few providers who offer high speed fibre in my area BT seem like the best of the bunch although not being able to use my Chromecast would be a real pain.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

What firmware build is that Chromecast on? The "Unable to connect to Internet" message means it's successfully connected to WiFi, and at least for me, earlier firmware builds kept showing that. I left it alone for a few days, then power-cycled it and it had managed to download an update (build 13300) that fixed things.
If you haven't already tried power-cycling Chromecast, try that - it might have connected long enough to get an update.

VPN connecting issues

Well ... it seems that i have some issues connecting to a VPN server (manual connection, from Network Connections -> More Network Connections -> VPN).
I cannot connect to it from Note 8, while i can succesfully connect from Note 4 (same networks, same router, same configurations).
On Note 8 i am on N950FXXU1AQI1 fw.
I had even Factory reset it and tried again, but without success.
I am adding server log for both note 8 (red) and note 4 (green).
Can someone try to see if it works (manual VPN, PPTP type)?
-------------------
Later update: tried AnyConnect as well (to a eneterprise VPN that i use) and it DOES NOT work as well (connection failed), while on Note 4 it works without a hickup.
So it seems, that at least for me, i cannot connect to ANY VPN network, which is an major issue for me.
I've had issues with my note 8 vpn as well. I usually have VyprVpn and PureVPN. The connection is a hit or miss really. And when it does connect, it starts with no connection and then network speeds up but slowly.
Hope this helps.
i understand, but i am forced to use that VPN app as i a company constraint (AnyConnect is CISCO VPN - weidly spread in companies).
While the Android Default VPN should work out of the box ...
VPN
I use pulse secure to vpn to the company intranet.
well ... factory reseted one more time, and all is working ... really strange ..
Turn off power saving
I know this is an old thread, but I just ran across this issue myself and found that if I turn off power saving the VPN works well. I hope you had already found this or another solution.

wifi hotspot traffing filtering

Hello everyone on this forum!
I have an issue with my P20 Pro when using wifi hotspot, or I think it's releated to my phone. To the point...
Sometimes I have to use wifi hotspot from my p20 pro to share internet access to my work laptop. Basically, if I'm at home office I use VPN to connect to internal network of my work place, so I can access internal recources. And everything is working when using hotspot except one program which uses SQL database. On phone wifi hotspot I can't access this database and it looks like my phone is blocking traffic related to this database. Database is giving me error that I'm not connected to internal network. I tried to reset network setting, still the same problem. I checked on some other phones:
google pixel 4a - database access OK,
huawei P20 lite - no database access,
any other non-phone hotspot network - database access OK.
Any segestion why this is happening?
Try usb tether and switching to 5Ghz (if possible on notebook side). Sounds like some routing issues but if you tried resetting already then I don't suppose you'll be able to resolve that.
