Moto X4 (unlocked AND Android One variant) wireless disconnect issues - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Seeing this issue on both my unlocked x4 running latest build (retus - PWWS27.1.3) and my fiance's Android One variant (running latest I assure you, can't get the info from her atm) where our phones will drop from the wifi in the house, and then immediately reconnect as if nothing happened.
Running a Netgear AC2350 r7500v2 with latest firmware (V1.0.3.26) through Verizon FIOS.
A lot of the reports and issues I'm reading about on other sites sound a lot like what the Pixel devices are going through, albeit they seem to be a little more centered around mesh networks, of which I don't have in use.
So pretty much, anyone else having weird issues relating to wifi on 8.0? If it's possible to go back to 7.1 I might give that a shot just to see if it's for sure an Oreo problem or not.

I had the same issue. I had to disable IPv6. I also got the phone replaced, the replacement does the same thing if IPv6 is enabled.

IPV6 on the router end you mean?
**UPDATE** Just checked, not enabled through my router.

Yes on the router. Before I upgraded the replacement, I think the WiFi was working fine. Something might be wrong with the Oreo update.
If you contact Motorola, they will replace it, my replacement didn't come with Oreo.
Motorola knows there's issues with the WiFi, but don't seem to care much. Not just the X4, if you search Google, you'll find some of their other phones with WiFi issues too.

Yuuuuuuup. Been finding a lot of people with the same problems. Instead of digging up old threads, figured it'd be worthwhile to start one here to bring more attention to the problem.
Now to find out if it's possible to get nougat back on...

[Q] WiFi occasionally 'killing' routers

Search function is currently unavailable, so apologies if this is a dupe...
Anyways, I'm currently running Rooted Stock 2.3.4 on my N1, and I've noticed that whenever I connect to my friend's DLink router (DIR-655, I think) the Wireless will work for some amount of time, but eventually it will stop working. And not just on my phone, either - the entire router stops working (at least for Wireless requests. Didn't have any wired devices connected to it). Thing is, last time I noticed it, it worked for quite a while - hour or two, maybe - then everything broke about 10 minutes after I received an email... At that point, the router needs to be rebooted, after which it continues working just fine.
The router is using WPA2 encryption, for what it's worth.
I've noticed this with previous versions of Android, so it's not a breaking change introduced with 2.3.4 or anything.
Unfortunately, I don't have an awful lot of Wireless routers to test with, and I haven't yet found an opportunity to test at home, so I'd be hard-pressed to say whether it's a router/D-Link problem, or if it's a device problem...
Has anyone else experienced this? Would flashing a custom ROM (e.g. CM7) fix this? Or would I need a new device? Any thoughts on what else I could do to debug this problem? As I said, this is a rooted device, with an unlocked bootloader and the latest version of Busybox installed.
I'm running 2.3.4 and haven't had this issue with this version or any previous ones.
I've had my phone disconnect from Google Services (the icons turn white instead of green), but the internet stays on and all other devices work just fine.
I have a Netgear router at home and a Linksys one at work and I'm connected to both the whole time I'm at either place.
Hmm... That's interesting.
I've never had Google Services disconnect, but I do have another issue with data randomly turning off. That's not a big deal, as I can just turn it actually off then back on again, and all is good.
Anyone else able to chime in with their experiences?
I have had this happen with cheap, crappy routers. Sometimes upgrading the router to DD-WRT helps, sometimes it doesn't. I had an ASUS this would happen to all the time, and an Airlink that this would happen to occasionally.
This doesn't ever happen to my Linksys WRT610N, and it never happened to an old ZyXEL X550.
I'm going to say, it's just a crappy router.
Thanks. Not really what I was hoping to hear, but that's life.
Did either bad router ever have this issue with other devices? One of the other folks living there has an iPad, and never has this issue, so I'm inclined to say it's at least partly my N1s fault. Also doesn't happen with any of the PCs connected to it.
Yeah, they actually did occasionally have issues with other devices. Hard to narrow it down because I have a ton of Wifi devices. The ASUS also seemed to go down based on time... after so long, it would just stop working properly. The Airlink seemed to get stuck based on demand and range. If I had my phone or laptop at the far end of the house and started using it a lot, it would get stuck. It was as if the router decided it was too much work to pump its signal that far and it would get tired.
Stock ROM on my N1 doesn't seem to allow it, but if you have a custom ROM, you might see if there is any way to set the Wifi to G-only. I had noticed on my old router that G wireless devices seemed less demanding for it.

My second N6, the same problem

I bought the Nexus 6 (blue, 64gb) the day one, in November and since that day I noticed random reboots in a particular situation. When I switch to a WiFi network to another it shuts down and so I have to turn it on. When it turns on I have lost all my WiFi networks configurations, so passwords, dhcp settings, etc.
Random reboots rarely happen also in camera/gallery apps.
I tried to send it back to google and I received a new nexus. The first one was produced in June 2014, the new one in December 2014. The issue is still there. [emoji17] I've also tried to update to 5.1 but no resolution.
I have rooted, installed twrp, decrypted both my nexus 6 with toolkit.
How can I solve the problem? I was very happy with this phone.
Try using it completely stock and see what happens. I'd say chances are that if you set both up the same, it's something you're doing and not the hardware on 2 different phones.
But other people have made the same basic mods on their nexus and their phone has not this kind of issue.
Is it every network? Maybe try a stable custom ROM to see if it happens there too. Could be a problem with specific networks or even apps. Troubleshooting is the key. First try full wipe, no restored Apps.
I could be as simple as an app the developer has not updated since gingerbread or something stupid like that.
Is there a way to find the malicious app?
There definitely *was* a bug causing loss of wifi networks, and I think there may also have been a reboot involved there (not sure if we rebooted it manually, or if it just did it on its own as a response to a wpa_supplicant crash...). It was across the board for Android 5.0 though, not limited to Nexus 6. I saw my wife's Nexus 5 do it once. Never actually had it happen on my 6.
I'm not sure if this bug was fixed or not, since it wasn't something we tried to reproduce, and only happened once. The bug is definitely related to wpa_supplicant, since that is the only program that actually interacts with its configuration file (which is where the wifi configurations are actually stored).
As far as galleries go, you're not giving much to guess by. I certainly haven't seen galleries cause reboots like that. Maybe you are using a bad one?
Try this gallery; https://github.com/lbdroid/Android-Binaries/blob/master/Gallery2.apk
That is the actual AOSP gallery, modified to install as a standalone application. The source code is in another repository on my github.
*note: it will not do you any good at all to swap out your phone, since there is no indication that you are experiencing a hardware issue.
But why other people doesn't experience this problem that is related to WiFi? All people use WiFi and every time. Is there a way to fix the WPA_supplicant issue? Maybe a custom ROM?
My first n6 had also an hw issue, I think, because before it rebooted it gave me some little "buzz" from the top speaker.

all people use WiFi is an incorrect statement. you can say most ppl use wifi, but all would never happen. I hate using WiFi and NEVER use it except when its absolutely necessary. ive probably used WiFi 2 times on my n6 since getting my n6 in November, and there's no WiFi issues here.

Yes, start with stock and install a few apps at a time until you get the problem. Given the fact that you have 2 different phones experiencing the same problem, it is much more likely that it is something software related rather than hardware (though I suppose it could be possible if you're really unlucky ).

You said that it happens when you change from one wifi network to another. Most people don't do that. Most people have one wifi network at a time and don't change it.
There is also a huge difference between wifi network configurations... A/B/N/AC, frequency, bandwidth, multiple-bands, encryptions, etc.

WiFi stops working

I noticed that WiFi stops working on my new G4 pretty often. The WiFi icon is on, and the connection is "up", but the data transmission stops working. I see the top arrow blink (is that transmit?) but the bottom arrow doesn't come up anymore. Trying to do anything fails and times out.
To fix, turning the WiFi off and back on makes it all work again.
Anyone else experience this problem? I know @jonathan3579 reports the same issue.
I am connected to 5 Ghz using an Asus RT-N66 running Merlin firmware. I have no issues with any of my other devices.
Using the "Switch to mobile data" option helps a bit by falling back on LTE when the WiFi stops working.

Same here. Very annoying. Love the form factor of this phone
I have tried the option to switch to mobile data when WiFi unavailable, but still have issues. May just go back to my G2 running Cloudy 3 ROM .

I'm having the same issue at home. I could be watching a video and suddenly stops. I don't know if it has to do something with root. I noticed it starts happening yesterday. I never had this issue and I got this phone sine 5/27 when it was released. I'll do a factory reset.

I'm not rooted and mine has done it ever since I got it (and did a factory reset before setting it up). I doubt resetting yours will fix your problem.

Are you having this issue everywhere you go or just one specific place?
I had not noticed it at work, but I only got on the WiFi yesterday for a little bit. This morning it failed on me, so, that's two for two. Haven't used it in many places.
The hotspot works great though. I tether an iPod Touch in my car automatically whenever I drive and I haven't noticed any issues there.

I'm at work and I have been watching multiples videos and no issue at all.
I just noticed this today happening to me too. =(.
Pretty great phone otherwise! Also connected 5ghz to a RT-AC68U (the T-Mobile cellspot), flashed with an older Merlin firmware.
Had to reboot to get it to behave again.
Me too
I've been having this issue too. I've noticed that I lose data and WiFi calling simultaneously. I thought it was my router because we were having issues with the router dropping phones and laptop, but now with a new router it is only my phone that is having a problem.

Running DNSet has definitely helped with keeping the data flowing, and I appreciate that.
WiFi calling is still dropping. When I look in the settings it says "enabling" and just hangs.
What internet provider do you have I'm assuming Comcast

This issue appears to be due to the 5ghz radio. I am not sure if it is software or hardware, but if you connect to the 2.4ghz band, the issue will go away.
Its most likely a issue with lollipop

Lollipop on the G4 maybe, but I have used a Nexus 6, a Moto X and a Dell Venue 7840, all running Lollipop, without issues. The G4 is the only one that has this issue. I never tested my old G3 on this network with Lollipop, I sold it before the update rolled out.

I switched to 2.4 ghz and WiFi calling appears to be staying connected. My provider is Oceanic Time Warner and my router is T-Mobile cell spot.
Fingers crossed and thanks for all the help.
Did these wifi problems start after root?
Mine were happening before root, I think. I switched to T-Mobile cell spot router right before I rooted because my old router was regularly dropping connections, and I have been paying attention more since I rooted. I am also caring for 11 month old twins, so things are kind of a blur. What I am saying is I might not be the most reliable source. I can say that switching from 5ghz to 2.4ghz seems to have solved my WiFi issue.

[Q] - Nexus 6 Wifi Slow

Hello All,
Just got a nexus 6 and went ahead and installed a custom rom (Pure Nexus).
Not sure if its a ROM issue or not (Trying a different rom shortly), but my wifi is terribly slow. I put it next to my amazon fire tablet and ran a speed test multiple times.
Amazon - Avg is 15-20
Nexus is 5-7
I have read some forums that says changing the band helps or forgetting the network and readding but no luck.
Anyone else have any tips before I have to send it back for a new one?

Less than a year. ATT UVerse provided router.
No problems here, I did a 135 down and 50 up on Comcast router
Looks like something with the Rom. I put Chroma on it and now get around 20 down. I do not think its app related as I just restored all using TB.
Going to clean flash pure and try again.
It's not Pure Nexus, but something else. I'm getting 160 down, 12 up (802.11ac) on Pure Nexus. Have you updated your device's baseband to the latest?
Stock ROM, 802.11n, reaching ISP cap of 60/10 on web speed tests.

Found out it was a rogue app that caused it. Thanks for your responses. Can you point me to the latest baseband? I saw the Modem Collection thread here but the latest looks to be for the M preview back on 7/10?
Go to Google's firmware page and download the latest firmware package. Extract the files inside. I believe there will be an additional archive in the firmware package that you can extract that will contain the radio image.
I was having slow WiFi issues too. I updated the firmware on my router and switched the channel and now it flies.
That's not so easy to do when the entire 2.4GHz band is congested with connections, as it is in my area. Simply changing the channel didn't work for me, and I had to get new hardware that supported 5GHz. The gamers and video watchers in the house all appreciated it.
Other phone is same?
my problem previously was the same..i tried it with stock and aosp based roms, then i went to asked my sister to call our isp.. and the technician was able to verify the problems.. it was our internet cable.. they replaced it and it worked back to normal..
I had a similar problem, but only with the 2.4Ghz band, I live in an apartment complex and in Los Angeles so it's even worse. Luckily nobody uses the 5Ghz band so that works fine for me.
Update but found out that the issue is that my wifi slows down when my BT is on. Does not have to be connected, just have to be on...
Another Update is that I found out the combo is...
Wifi Connected + BT on (Does not have to be connected) + RetailMeNot App
I froze RTMN and now there is no slowness.
So the app is the culprit, not the combination of bluetooth and WiFi. Good thing you got it sorted.

Another WI-FI issue

As I've already read, SD 835 phones including this one suffer Wi-Fi drops and disconnects. My particular issue is that even though the device is connected to wifi either speed seems to slow down a lot or internet simply doesn't work, I can tap whatever I want in Chrome and the loading bar below the address bar fills in a millisecond and disappears. Happens on different routers, router configuration reset doesn't help nor does device reset. Was the issue already addressed by any update or should I wait?

It is, however most people complain about disconnects making them restart the phone. In my case wifi is still connected, but it sometimes seems to stop working while still being connected and wifi relaunch fixes the issue.. 145 fw didn't solve it, so I guess we should wait.

I returned mine and ordered the US version to see what's what. Should be present there too but one can hope... don't want to give up on the phone but if I encounter it there too then I'll have to go for another model. I'll report back whatever I'll find.
Have a similar wifi problem using (US) firmware .145. A restart fixes it, but eventually the problem resurfaces again. May wait to update until firmware following .179 is available, as I've read that in some cases .179 makes the problem worse. (?)

I'm using CE1 .145 firmware and it started to do that problem a week ago. I have never experienced that before that time. I have to restart my phone at least twice a day and it appears even I'm not connected to any wifi router.
I'll see when update will come. It's horrible.

Several days ago, my xperia also sufering wifi issues. The wifi is disabled by my device.
I have done so much attempts to solve it until I got this:
Connect the device to the PC and open ADB Fastboot. Then, conduct this codes:
adb shell
settings put global captive_portal_detection_enabled 0
That's all. My wifi work again.
I hope that will work on you.
Code:
adb shell
settings put global captive_portal_detection_enabled 0
This worked for me. Thank you
