Indeed, I think it's good enough and if you don't take pictures during a video the quality is even better.

even I heard it about that on slashgear I guess, the maximum stills are 9MP. well it's more than enough, I just wanted to double check about that.

9 MP is for burst mode, capturing pictures at a stretch in 10 FPS. Not for the photo shoot in video i guess!

burst has 3 settings, high speed (1280x720) mid (3920x2204) and low (1920x1080)
HDR must be automatically disabled as turning it on/off manually makes no difference to burst speeds.
Stills settings on NORMAL
HDR on =12mp top resolution (4:3 3920x2940) or 9mp (16:9 3920x2204)
HDR off =13mp top resolution (4:3 4128x3096) or 9mp (16:9 3920x2204)
Stills settings on SUPERIOR AUTO
HDR NOT SELECTABLE =12mp top resolution (4:3 3920x2940) or 9mp (16:9 3920x2204)

so what does burst mode exactly mean?
I really like taken pictures with my smartphone but unfortunately Android Phones are VERY slow taking a picture. I saw how a friend of mine was taking pictures with his Iphone5 camera and I was only thinking "I want that fast camera for my next Android Phone!! ^^
So how fast is that burst mode?

Burst mode is different again. Hold the button and it'll keep taking photos. What you want is a low shutter lag.. which is the delay between pressing the button and getting a photo. This depends very much on the camera hardware and the app driving it - it's very possible for one android phone to be slow and another very fast.
Rest assured this should be good... who do you think makes the iphone camera modules that you like so much

ah ok burst mode seems to be nice feature! Yeah I didn't really know if shutter lag is the right word^^ I didn't know that Sony is making the Camera hardware for apple, but that doesn't mean that it will be as fast as the Iphone taking pictures, because of their software...

Being slow isn't a bug it's a feature A feature called auto focus. When you click the camera button it first try to focus on the object it's facing before actually taking a pic. Try disabling it and you could use your camera to shoot like using a machine gun
And yeah burst mode is something similar to what I explained in a single click.

Shutter speed

Hi, I mostly use my camera for taking pics of my toddler and thus I need a fast shutter whats the best way to achieve this on my XZ without root?
I have found my wifes 18 month old arc s has a faster shutter speed..

Make a picture of the same object/area compare the pictures and tell us if you really need a faster shutter.
The pictures I've seen from the XZ were really really good. Of course there is a lot of noise when you look at the picture in full resolution, but it's not a DSLR.

Toddlers don't stay still for very long so yes faster shutter speed is better. quality is really good that's not a problem.
You need more light or a higher iso speed(more grain).

tried my brothers s4 his shutter speed is faster too...
I know what you mean. Having kids you see why it's great having a smartphone that can take pictures fast and clear.
Yes, I have a dedicated camera but I don't take it everywhere I do my smartphone.
I'm know of apps that can take fast pictures but I think it also depends on if your camera supports it. Good luck. If you find one that helps you should share it in case it helps someone else.

Shutter lag and shutter speed are different things
I have a feeling the OP means shutter lag.
The Galaxy Nexus isn't particularly fast, they changed it so it auto focuses before taking the photo (which it didn't at launch) because otherwise all you got were blurry pictures. The Nexus 4 auto focuses than the Galaxy Nexus faster and thus takes the picture quicker. The Xperia Z auto focuses the fastest out of the 3.
The Z's camera starts up much much slower.
In terms of shutter speed you could just set a higher iso to force the camera to pick a lower shutter speed?
My XZ has almost zero shutter lag with Cyanogenmod
shutter lag = time between you press "take picture" and time the picture is taken ?
On my old Xperia X10i you culd change the Focus from Macro or Auto to Infinite and shutter lag was nearly Zero.
Same works on Xz if you switch to Burst Mode.

I'm talking about the time between when you press the take picture button to the time it takes it. Xperia arc s,s3 s4 HTC one are ask faster.
so this is quite messed up

That's shutter lag. It's almost instant with Cyanogenmod so the problem on stock rom must be because on Sony's camera app, try a different app.

high speed camera is almost instant but why can't Sony implement it? such an important thing and they've neglected it.
I find if you keep the camera button pressed it will focus the camera and when you release it it will take a picture very quickly.
Interesting never knew this before, still not as good as instantly pressing the button so it takes a pic in half a second but its good enough,

I know it's not the best video quality wise, but it was just a quick test. But yea they do have to make some improvements to the camera software. But i think if i had been better at filming, i could have choosen a better spot to film at.

What's the maximum exposure time for the camera?

This always seems like a hard spec to find. Can someone go into the pro mode of the stock app and tell me what the longest exposure that this camera allows is? I apologize in advance if this has been answered. I searched the forums but didn't find the answer.
Thanks!

Thanks Twski! That's exactly what I was looking for. Regarding the other posts, I'm mostly interested in the stock camera app. I've found mods and ROMs to be disappointing and buggy and with photography, that's the last thing you want when time is of the essence.
