Interesting S5 boot screen - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I have some AT&T S5's that I have acquired and they seem to have a custom firmware of some kind. Possibly an unlocked bootloader? Just curious as to what I have. I have included a picture of the boot screen.

The bootloader's are unlocked!!!!!! I managed to flash twrp on it and it is working properly!
I noticed it says Modeeveloper under the download mode. Maybe there's a way to figure how these are unlocked.

I have about 40 of these. Devs pm me if interested.

I know somebody with the same problem, started the other day. BS the bootloader is unlocked.. Whatever it is, it has hijacked the phone to the point that it freezes on the boot animation and loops. Tell me, how do you come into 40+ devices with this issue and why are you trying to offload them as if they're something special?

Don't know if you got my PM or not but I'm interested in getting my hands on one or two of those devices... I think there's a lead here that can finally free our phones. Lemme know asap if you can get some of these devices to me.

Is there some kind of issue with your notification system for PMs? I sent one a couple days ago and never heard back

The phones function perfectly, got them from a company that does network testing.

If its from the network testing firm I think it is, this may be a very welcome development. I have a hunch regarding the software on these devices.

What's needed to work on the Bootloader

What are we needing in order to figure out how to unlock or bypass the AT&T Bootloader?
I downloaded the stock files and have the aboot.mbn and the sbl1/sdi.mdn files. I have never worked on bootloader files before, but have some experience modding kernel and ROM level code.
This may be ignorant on my part - but since we have the files, couldn't we open and manipulate the code that is currently restricting 3rd party recoveries, kernels and ROMS?
What is needed? And/or, could we not utilize the modified bootloaders from another device with similar architecture? Perhaps like the Note 3 or even the S4; not to mention the T-Mobile S5? Since the T-Mobile and AT&T versions of all Samsung phones are almost identical, I would assume that would be the easist route - at least to help determine the differences that are restricting our device.....
Let me know if anyone needs these files or has info on what to look for within them.... I'm happy to mod anything on my end.
Thanks !
Because it is locked we can't just flash over it with another one due to signatures and miss match.
Need to research into the os and associated code to find an exploit that can be used like safestrap.

Or if someone that works at AT&T or Samsung would be nice enough to leak a signing key or a signed unlocked bootloader.
Key from Tmobile S5
T-mobile S5 is rooted. Can we find the signing key used for Tmobile phones? Is there is a remote chance keys are same?
Will recoveries on Tmobile and ATT phone be same?

Thats a good question. I wonder if we know how many keys the S5 will accept for signed updates? I.e. Is there a Samsung and a AT&T key for all S5's or is it per model or is it derived somehow from the IEMI.
Why would the developers even waste their time on the AT&T S5? They know the story behind it. Same ol' thing. I would rather have them actually develop roms on the T-Mobile S5, which we all can use btw, instead of wasting time on trying to unlock the bootloader. If it could be hacked, it would have, LONG AGO!

Well to be fair, if you took the best developers and hardware/software hackers in the world and put them in a room with an amazing salary.. it would be hacked..
So lets not say that its impossible. It is just extremely difficult and beyond the scope of the few developers (if any) that are still around trying to crack into it. The problem is that there aren't that many people that just want to sit around trying to figure out a way to make it work, they would rather move to different phones and carriers instead, because its just overall easier.

Yep, hate to burst anyone's bubble who has a G900A, but it's not going to happen... EVER. Options are to hold out for a developer edition phone from Samsung or get a T-mobile version... which is exactly the same thing minus the restrictions. Or if you are pissed at AT&T, just find another carrier. Maybe if there was enough churn from this, they would stop doing it.

No. Again, there is a difference from root and unlocking the bootloader. I was referring to the bootloader as that's what this thread is discussing. I never said it was impossible, it is quite possible just takes a lot of hard work. My prediction is that it will never be fully unlocked.

I think the problem is SELinux is an extremely tough nut to crack(and I'm guessing you could easily get a six figure payday for an unknown SELinux/PaX kernel exploit in the black market at this point). Pretty much every linux kernel vulnerability exploit code I've seen fails on all of my boxes with SELinux, PAX and hardened GCC(one of these protection mechanisms always ends up killing the exploit before it can deliver its payload). Do we know exactly what SELinux and PAX(if any) features were enabled in the .config that Samsung used to compile the kernel (and if a hardened toolchain was used for the userland)? At least from what I've seen a properly configured SELinux box with Pax and hardened GCC is one of the toughest boxes to crack. I guess what we can hope for is that someone at Samsung did something stupid otherwise its quite possible we could be waiting for awhile(unless a key or signed unlocked bootloader leaks).
(edit: This applies to getting root through a kernel exploit.(Although with SELinux that isn't enough you need to not only be UID0 root but you also have to switch the role to sysadm_r. The bootloader I'm not 100 percent sure on the secure boot process but my understanding from reading other dev's threads is that this will be even harder than getting a root escalation in the SELinux kernel). Although if we could crack the bl we could just inject root easily.

Android 5.1.1 OTA being rolled out on T-Mobile for the S6 edge!

RELEVANT TO US BECAUSE WHEN WE GET THE UPDATE, IT LOCKS THE BOOTLOADER.
IF THEY LOCK IT FOR THE S6 EDGE, THEY'LL LOCK IT FOR THE S6!
DO NOT TAKE THE OTA IF YOU DON'T WANT A LOCKED BOOTLOADER.
Unassuming Galaxy S6 edge users are in for a surprise, as T-Mobile appears to be rolling out a freshly cooked OTA based on Android version 5.1.1 Lollipop for the device. The catch, however, it is so far reported only on the T-Mobile network.
XDA forums user Sunderwear mentioned about the OTA a couple of hours back (at the time of writing this story). Urged by other users of the device, the poster also uploaded a video of his Galaxy S6 edge running the latest firmware. The video can be found at the end of this article.
As noted from the narration, the update also locks the bootloader on the device.
So, how many of you have already received the update? What do you think of it?
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/2015/04/29/android-5-1-1-ota-being-rolled-out-on-t-mobile-for-the-s6-edge/
Looks like someone in the Edge forum was able to downgrade the bootloader and flash TWRP but still, tread carefully.

Isn't it odd that just one guy has gotten the update? T-mobile has sold hundreds of thousands of these units and only one guy got an OTA?

This type of thing might happen with a lot of updates. You need to remember the rooting/moding community is very small compared to the people who just use their phone as is. So if anything I think its weird that someone in this community got the update.

As the device has only been out for a short time, there isn't much support yet. Be patient, good things will come, they always do
Plus I remember back when I got my G4 Play, was about a month or two after launch and there was hardly anything for either that or the regular G4. Took a few months but since then development even to this day is pretty solid for the devices. It will come, just will take a little while.

[WARNING] Exercise Caution Flashing T-Mobile Variant

Hey everyone!
Not to cause any fear mongering, but as we get closer to unlocks coming back from OnePlus, I'd like to make sure that everyone exercises some caution.
According to what little information we have we know that the Modem is likely signed by T-Mobile.
Everyone is eager to try to get the Global ROM working on the T-Mobile version and we'll do our best! But please exercise caution. As of now we do not have any factory images, or stock images for the T-Mobile variant.
If you softbrick your phone, it may be a few days before it can be fixed!
Flashing an unsigned modem may result in your phone not being able to function properly from a network standpoint!
If you rely on your phone on a daily basis, please do not "Guinea pig flash." No one wants their new device nonoperational.
As always, do what you want to do! Just please be wary, and know that there are risks until we can properly assess the differences!
Is there a program oneplus uses to flash firmware? I've always been familiar with LG and Samsung devices, but anyway I know we can most likely flash anything that isn't signed with different RSA keys. Don't know if oneplus is similar. Submitted for my unlock bin at midnight so I should be receiving mine soon. I'll try and pull as much information as I can so we can compare.

This phone uses the standard fastboot to flash.
This is like the Nexus, Pixel and Essential phones.
Typically you cannot flash to a locked partition unless the omg file is signed correctly.
That means that you will typically get a failure message if you can't flash a particular partition.

The only one that I'm aware of is MsmDownloadTool. However, I haven't seen much mention of it in context to the 6T. I know it was used for the OnePlus 6. But I believe it's more used to simply recover from soft bricks.
There is so much false information in the OnePlus site forums. People telling others that once they unlock they'll be able to flash the international version without a problem. I posted that they can't rush into anything and to stop spreading false info or people are going to end up with bricks.

Very much so. I mean maybe things will work just fine.... But it is not wise to ever just jump into something. Like mentioned, we don't even have factory or stock images for the T-Mobile variant. Something goes wrong and you don't know what you're doing and you're dealing with a brick until development catches up. I know everyone is eager, but people need to be smart about it too.
Once I get my unlock token if things haven't already been tested I'm more than willing to volunteer my device as it's not my primary or even secondary device. Unless u know ur way around fastboot adb dd etc pls do not start randomly doin things to ur device as has been stated it could be days before we have a way for everyone to restore their devices should something go wrong.. Everyone needs to be patient as of right now logix is the only one with an unlocked tmo variant..as such plz be patient till we have more concrete info to share.

Yeps! I should have mine Monday morning, assuming the full 7 days from OP. We'll need to prepare a stock flashable image set before we do anything. I'll be doing a lot of testing as I have a Pixel 3 XL as well to fall back on. I have a few theories thus far on how things will go, but that also assumes that the -only- difference is the modem partition.

I may have mine Sunday or Monday.
What about extracting the partition images from the payload.bin and flashing everything but the modem in fastboot?
Edit: if you're rooted and have twrp couldn't you potentially make a backup for if it doesn't work?

Once again, we have no backups/stock images/factory images currently. If you were to do that and the device doesn't work, then you are stuck waiting for someone to provide a flashable solution to fix your paperweight.

So we can't do twrp backups currently?
Just wanted to mention that if you are able to flash the global modem. I have the dual sim from 1+ using both a TMobile and a Verizon sim with no issues on data, sms, mms, calls (verizon had to have them enable CDMA-less)
Perfect service on both now in Phoenix, Arizona.

What are you thoughts on the pixel 3 xl vs OnePlus 6t?

I rarely touch my Pixel 3 XL, honestly. The OnePlus 6T just feels better in the hand. The in display finger print reader is awesome and saves time of having to pick up the phone constantly, and the notch on the XL drives me through the roof. I thought I'd get used to it, but every time my eyes travel to it I get annoyed lol.
It's not a bad device, though. I just find myself always picking up the OnePlus 6T.

Yeah that's pretty much my take on that phone why I never actually got.
Hi folks, it is interesting following your developments, I wish you the best of luck! I bought the global unlocked version directly from OnePlus, and I am actually curious if I will be able to go the other way haha, Flash the T-Mobile modem onto my global device. My only reason for doing so is I am on T-Mobile but I experienced a lot of data dropouts, phone loses connection then usually reconnects after 5 or 10 seconds but one time actually required a reboot. Was wondering, if it's even possible to flash the T-Mobile modem, might this help my issue. And would I potentially be able to keep the updated ROMs from OnePlus but running with the T-Mobile modem.
No one knows currently. Until we have unlocked T-Mobile variants, the only thing we can really do is speculate.

Not sure if the APN would have anything to do with it but did you try using T-Mobiles BYOD APN settings over the autonomic one the phone sets up?
