i added some thermal pad on procie n emmc .. n it was cooler. the heat when charging while playing games was fine.
doesn't heat up when excessive use, but battery drains very fast when heated by environment
It heats up in sunny days. Before 2 days i was in city and just standing there, my Rosy's battery heated from 33 degrees to 40 degrees in just 3 minutes. That is not cool, i needed to turn him off to cool down. While gaming he is cool, not like P8 Lite 2015 who heats up that much that you can not hold him in your hands. While charging he is cool too. (Around 32 degrees).

Much better than my nexus 6 when it comes to this. Playing intensive games for long periods produces a slight warming, but nothing compared to any other phone I've ever owned. Not uncomfortable in the very least. Even cools down from being in the sun quite quickly.
The only time mine gets hot is when recording 4k video. It gets scary hot.

Haven't done and video. Outside that it gets warm at the worst, even when navigating with the screen on and charging at the same time which I have seen cause a lot of heat. Also warm when downloading and setting up a ton of apps, but nothing bad. Some heat is going to happen. and this phone has been cooler than most.
When i am charging and playing CPU / GPU intensive games such as modern combat 5, real racing 3 and, asphalt 8(which is a fairly old game), it can get quite warm at the bottom of the the phone but off the charger it works amazing and stays moderately cool when being used intensively

Have had no issues with device operating too hot, I have had phones that really push the boundaries, but this device has kept it's cool
Playing Real Racing 3 my R1 HD doesn't get hotter than 60 degrees Celsius. And I have a $7 original Blu case that's made of rubber and TPU so that says a lot about how cool this phone is under the hood.

Played CSR 2 this weekend for long periods of time! The phone wasn't hot enough for warming up my hands and the graphics quality didn't deteriorate either! Great heat dissipation for now! The phone is new though. Lets see after some months

The phone has an older processor Snapdragon 808 and is prone to overheating on the aluminum edges when in games or watching videos.
Playable, without much lag but it gets really hot. Definitely would recommend a case.
