Camera takes about 600ms after pressing the shutter button on the screen.
Launching the camera app isn't slow at all, they have a neat graphic and good automatic composition that tells you to move closer or further.
The camera sensor is just poor for lowlight or video taking. With regular images its fine.

launching the camera from screen off is instant. LOVE IT!
focus speed is awkward. takes a second and more to focus. Blackberry need to work on their auto-focus response.

I just tried it and camera app opened surprisingly fast, before 8.1 it could be pretty slow sometimes and the image would freeze for a bit pretty often. Of course it's possible that right now it's just a good phase and it might get worse. Shooting photos itself is not bad, not super fast but not terribly slow.

I'd rate it minus 10
Not only is it slow to be ready, once ready, it can take literally seconds before you can take the photo as it tries to focus and set the exposure. I found a camera app called Open Camera v1.43.3 by Mark Harman in the hope of improving this. Alas it doesn't. It is a good app in other respects, adding functionality or improving the interface.
Have you tried the gmod cam?
