live aod. oreo annoyances? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

If this is in the wrong place I apologize. First which devices run live aods? Im very surprised note 8 doesn't have this functionality. Second general gripes about oreo ota. 1) removed app longpress options such as "app info" etc why? 2)buried easily accessible settings through longpressing quicksettings. 3)not oreo but annoying. No dedicated live wp menu. Please add your gripes itt.

I think there is nothing to "gripe", all the complaints that you are presenting can be easily fixed or implemented by means of some app, if you read carefully this entire section, you can find many useful insights about oreo and its changes, in my case, instead of complaining or whinning, I preffer to look for solutions or fixes, but that is my opinion

<Mod Snip> (profanity) are you talking about not only did oreo remove functionality it literally borked many users phones. Why on earth would you celebrate "finding apps" to work around previous functionalities? <Mod Snip> (Flaming/Rude) Also if you are so keen on fixes than LIST THEM HERE. adress the issues or you're just griping about my gripe. Plus you did not answer the main question. <Mod Snip> (Flaming/Rude)

Fair enough mod. I've been around a while and have never flamed. But I'm really at my wits end. I had a perfectly functioning non rooted device that no longer works properly after 8.0 ota. I have default alert tones, all apps had specific akert tones, ringing with no indication of what they are. Apps will download but not install without a long period of time. Badges are borked. Apps will not open from notification shade. And Ive not found a fix. Ive read even factory reset will not remedy the situation. So if your handset works, great, but it seems like piling on when you get replies like the above. Ive removed Samsung account, removed updates from google apps. Cleared partition cache and nada..

I understand your frustration, trust me. I'm having the same issues coming from the S8+ to the S9+. I also miss some of the features that Oreo seemed to remove. However, please just try not to take that frustration out on other members. If you're not pleased with someone's response, as I said, you can ignore it or if it's really bad, report it and mods will handle it. I hope you find a resolution or you could possibly RMA if needed I suppose.
Good luck!

Thank you for your polite response. Im wondering if I should start a thread if there is an oreo specific forum? Btw does S9 have the live aods?

We have the infinity wallpapers, which kinda adds a live effect to the AOD but not really lol. I think your thread here is ok as is, there might be an Oreo related thread in the guides section for Note 8 but TBH I haven't checked. It's a well known fact that Senior Mods are too lazy to read. :silly:

I only stated that is useless to complain or whine
here in XDA, about all the things you do not like about Oreo or for that matter anything related, nobody here has control or solutions for what samsung implements, or takes away, and, for solutions, YOU are the one who must look for them, I never demand anything from others

So in any regard. If you want animated AOD. Heres what you do. Why if you go to Samsung store and try to dl an animated aod it tells you "your phone is not compatible with animated aod's" is beyond me but whatever.
1) go to AOD, under Lock screen settings
2)choose clock style
3)choose style where you previously or now can choose a static pic
4) choose gif will now be an option and about 20 default gifs will be present. Choose one of those or your own
5)profit

That may be true, but as I said if you go to Samsung store and try to dl an animated aod it will at least tell me "device not supported". But I got a few cool ones from giphy.

So Im copying this here in the hopes it may help somebody. At least re. Oreo's random and unceasing notifications.
I may have found the reason. The new power saving "feature" may be the culprit. It seems to sound an alert every time it sleeps an app not whitelisted. Probably one of the stupidest pieces of coding ever. I caught a notification in the bar of like an ekg line when it happened. But get this it immediately disappears. So if you dont catch it you have now idea why you're being alerted. Go in to maintenance and switch all off or whatever you think is appropriate and it should stop. However the random vibration alerts I can't figure out. Ill get them for apps I dont have them set for but sporadically like instagram. And then on next sms which I have it specifically set not to vibrate. Hope this helps.

[HOWTO]Work Music On Ouya

Let's get started!
What you're going to need!(IMPORTANT!)
1. SU
2. Busy Box
3. A Way To Side Load
4. Knowledge Of Permission Setting
& Root Permissions
5. Root Explorer
If you're familiar with setting permissions via. Root Explorer that's a plus!
I'm sorry, but as I don't get on the computer much. I can't provide permissions to set and I'll tell you the usual.
Everything here can be found with a simple Google search.
Are you a noob?
Well, I can tell you that this procedure is very easy and something easy to remember.
Google a search on; "What Permissions To Set On Root Explorer In System" or something among those lines, as we will need to install .apk's that way!
Assuming you understand what to do, let's figure out what player you'd like to use.
I, being one to have large libraries of music tend to use PlayerPro, I recommend Google Music/Google Play Music.
Let's pull more strings! Pull the app off the net or if you own the app, extract it onto a side load app you trust.
Once done, proceed to Root Explorer with knowing you have the app on the Ouya itself, once you see it use the Copy Paste method and place it in the System Apps(can be easily found from Main Directory), once you've established this, now is where permission settings come into play.
You should be able to remotely click the bottom "..." Using the D-Pad or the Touch Pad. This is where Copy And Paste should be.
If you've gotten through this and everything is set up proper, the next step is to reboot the console itself, do a full reboot to prevent any confusion and risk not seeing/having the player working.
If you've done this correctly, once you go to view your apps, you should see your app installed and ready to go.
NOTE: And yes, I mean note! Do not try this with the side load procedure and expect it to work, people have attempted this and either 1. See force closes, 2. The app is not loading, 3. The app is there but will not open and doesn't truly seem to be installed.
SIDE NOTE: This can be done with both ADB and my procedure.
If this was useful to you, I can only ask of a favor!

MODS This just clickbait SPAM BS.
The title is vague on purpose, and the thread is basically saying "Hey bro, if you want a music app on your Ouya, just sideload that ****! OH WOW!"
However, like dully79 said, the only main reason to use the official Google Music app is to use the Google Music service and stream your library from the cloud. However, this is impossible without Google Services, which is not present in the stock Ouya ROM and isn't in any 3rd party ROM out yet, either. So basically, you can't do what he says you can do by doing what he says to do.
This is clearly intended to get people to try and go to his stupid YouTube channel, which he links to at the end.
How about you get traffic and views by having good content on your channel, instead of polluting this forum with useless bull****?

Please be respectful of my threads.
No, I do not have my channel setup at the end to spam boards, it's just a simple thanks if you enjoyed my tutorial.
I don't intend to spam people, nor do I try and grab traffic.
I am simply trying to help others understand a method, if you disagree, I'd be more than happy to remove my channel link with a simple request, and also a request that you not bash my threads as I'm only here for assistance and spend my time happily making ROMs and doing other things.
I will not criticize you unless you doing do the same, it's disrespectful to me that you try and hurt my progress and tuts I post as users may not know how.
If I were simply begging for something I'd spend my time in General Forums where people generally go to do that sort of thing.
Lastly, if you've got nothing nice to say, don't say it and just avoid wasting your time coming through a place where people go to help, not get help with a channel.
I'm disappointed to know that someone would go as far as to make a whole post bashing on what I do to help the community, and I will have this brought to the mods and discussed with them in order to better our area without someone posting the same in all threads.
My last words are, thank you for those of you who actually know I try to help and who simply understand that if I were to spam you'd seed traffic from my post everywhere. I love you all, and appreciate you not going this far to bash me.

To leave my feedback on a clearer note. YES! Yes you can listen to music from a storage device as long as the device is read as a USB Mount! This has been confirmed by others in the official Ouya Forums!
Google Play Music is for cloud streaming. And for any other read device!

Oops, my bad man, all credit goes to you if I took your method.
People cry a out signatures, there's no need for one! I love my community and will stand up for it!
This thread was your fourth post on XDA, at least on that account.
It is not actually a Development post and contains basically nothing that anyone in the Dev section wouldn't already know ("Hey bro, if you want to put an app onto your system you can copy & paste it into /system/apps! This makes it a system app! Oh wow!")
Then you link to your YouTube channel and ask people to go to it.
All of these things together made you seem like a SPAMmer. If you're not, sorry about that, but your post is still in the wrong forum and doesn't actual contain useful or new information. The fact that a much better thread explaining how to do what you posted about exists (in the correct forum no less) is just icing on the cake.

[Q] why is djamol's account didabled?

I read a thread and saw that his profanities were removed. WTF does that mean. It seemed like he had lots of work being done. And from the sound of it a major achievement for wp8 as far as hacks go. What was this profanity and will his account be enabled again. Is this even real or am I bugging out. Anyone with info on what may have happened. Please reply.
He wasn't killed, so he can continue hacking.
I saw his original message. Many people here made a huge progress in hacking WP, but we are polite. No one tells mods such sh things.
Closing thread as an individual user's account status has nothing to do with WP8 help.

Things I don't like so far

In order from most annoying:
Cannot whitelist k9 mail (and other things) from power saving (this is a deal breaker, I'm taking it back)
Long press to select text instead of double click (vanilla android allows both) (almost a deal breaker)
Media volume cannot be increased without acknowledging warning when BT connected
Can’t disable bixby button without samsung account
No root (needed to run webserver on 80 and change iptables)
Fingerprint sensor hard to find, hard to touch (compared to nexus 6p)
Default phone app sucks and can’t be changed
-Notifications for blocked numbers calling
-Hard to block numbers
-Hard to add recent calls to contacts (uses wrong account or something)
Volume buttons hard to find, on wrong side of phone
Samsung sms app is ugly and horrible (replaceable)
Samsung calendar app does not allow multiple default reminders (replaceable)
Lock screen time is on multiple lines with no way to change it
Thats nice. Enjoy.

Now we know from authoritative source that volume button is on the wrong side all those years, imagine that.
There are ways to adjust pretty much all of these points. Some are android specific - assume you are new to Android??
Did you even review the phone/play with it before spending on something you have chosen to dislike? To be fair you've come to a forum where 99.9999% of people are note enthusiasts so you will be whacked with a great big stick with a post like this :silly:
Ok how do you whitelist from power saving in a way that actually works? The settings interface for that is much different than stock android and doesn't actually let stuff run all the time like it does on my 6p. k9 always says syncing disabled (and works fine on 6p with stock nougat or oreo).
How do you get double-tap to select a word in text? Works by default in stock android.
After asking twice before to confirm increase volume while BT connected, it didn't ask this last time I increased it. I guess it is magically ok now.
How do you disable bixby button without creating a samsung account? There is an app that used to work using accessibility but no longer works in latest update.
How do you get root? The rooting page itself says "2.Enable OEM Unlock from developer option (Currently no workaround for those who doesn't have this option)" and I don't have this option.
How do you change the phone app? I tried downloading and installing one from apkmirror and got an error when installing.
How do you prevent notifications when blocked callers call?
How do you get normal time on the lock screen? Not the always on screen.

A respectful suggestion if I may.
Your first post was..... confrontational? Not the way to have your teething problems answered or supported.
Many of us, in all forum's, experience teething problems. I suggest you ask questions preferably one at a time so a peer can offer you some advice.
I have yet to ask for help here and not receive it. You will find there are some amazingly smart guys and gals here who will help IF you ask a palatable question. I am afraid what you have done is cause bad feeling and that's not the way to get help with your problems. Just food for thought. :good:

I agree with the fingerprint sensor placement, for me being left handed, I have ot align it perfectly for it to work. Luckily the iris scanner is fast.
One issue I am coming across is my phone would random reboot and some settings would be changed to stock. For example, the font size would be change to default instead of everything tiny. My quick shortcuts layouts are stock and I have to re-login into some apps.
It happened about 3 times since i got the phone the first week of September. Hopefully I'm not alone. Sucks if I am though...lol
There is no help for those issues. That is why there is no response, and why the phone is going back. I am surprised anyone can stand the samsung interface and that is why it might sound confrontational. The apps that samsung replaces default apps with are really awful.

The only issue or possibly even an advantage is Samsung is edging it's own ecosystem in more and more. , basically it encourages one to buy another Sammy device and stay on board with them.

Anybody can fan-boy and circlejerk, that takes no skill.
It takes skill to spot issues and courage to speak out on them.
Every phones has its issues, these do not make Note 8 useless, but buyers can more easily decide if it is for them, when they know its particular failings.

It's not a critical assessment...it's a misleading one.
A few observations.
The volume button on the left side is the more ergonomic position and also makes it less likely you will drop the phone while changing volume making it an objectively better placement. The fingerprint scanner? Yeah, it's poor ergonomics at best and your complaint there is well justified.
Root is something you knew going in you wouldn't have, if it mattered you should have bought something else. I do agree in general that the trend toward taking root access from us is one I hate. That's why I bought an international version and rooted it.
The Samsung calendar app is less well featured than the stock app but it uses no resources when not used and you can always use the google app or one of the several better than stock google calendar apps on the play store. You don't get to complain about not having an app you can put on you phone in seconds which isn't even close to the best app of its kind anyways. I BTW didn't use the stock app on my 6P, didn't meet my needs.Samsung's stock SMS app is awful, IMO someone should be fired there because it falls below even a minimum level of functionality. But then while Googles does manage to get to at least a minimally functional feature set it isn't much better and both are a long way from what can be had in seconds for free that work better than either on the market. You don't get to complain about this one either though, the stock google app is a few clicks away and a few seconds will give that stock google experience if that is your preference.
Same number of clicks with Samsung to add a recent callers to contacts. Hard to do so is dismissed.
Hard to copy because you have to long press instead of double tap? Seriously? lol That's a fairly lame complaint without even taking into consideration the S-pen which opens up a whole world of options that you don't have on the 6P, one of which is using the S-Pen in the first place.
I like the default dialer and it has features which Google's does not. Regardless it can be changed as well as which dialer is the default, where did you get the idea you couldn't change dialers?
I don't have the media volume warning with my phone unless I'm on headphones, not sure why you do?
The Bixby button can be disabled, it can be disabled without signing into Samsung. Just an FYI, it can also be slaved to another function. All without root.
You can white list any app from power saver, just takes a few clicks, assuming of course you know which clicks. You have in an oblique way a real gripe here, Samsung's menus are getting better but they are still too bloated. The search menu function is your friend in pursing hard to find settings.
Who uses lock screens in this day an age? You've get bio-metrics and AOD, leaving the lock screen as an artifact of what was once the best we could do but isn't anymore. Think of it this way, I'm a pathetic old man and I've been able to understand that lockscreens are now just an extra step. Your complaint in this regard reminds me of my friends who cant handle new tech and are still trying to hang on to their flip phone.
At this point you probably think I'm busting your balls a little bit and you're right. On the other hand your complaints are largely groundless. The only real objective gripe you have is the fingerprint sensor location. Your assessment of the volume button location is subjective, not objective, and objectively is incorrect. Your complaints about the stock apps can be applied to google apps in the same way and most of which I changed on my 6P just as I have here. The impression I get is that the main problem you have is you need to learn how to shop better. There is no reason to buy a phone that does not have root if you know you want root. There is no reason to buy a phone well known for it's rather overbearing GUI and menu bloat if you know you are going to hate it. Why do that to yourself?

Question What's going on in this Preloadinstaller.txt log file?

Found the following log in my files last night after a period of issues with my phone such as the notifications being reset, various digital wellbeing entries disappearing and some data loss etc despite me quite literally only using this thing for Facebook and YouTube.
Ignoring additional back story (someone else uses my phone regularly, need to know what's been done before I take issue with it), what on earth is going on in this log, and why/how was it even generated in the first place?
I'm autistic so unfortunately I have found myself both unable to drop this or find answers so I figured I'd look here.
If someone could explain if this is normal everyday behaviour for the phone, and if not what would be needed for this to happen (never seen the log before and it's in a folder with thousands of others, most of which are in an "adlg" folder).
To clarify, I did not request the logs nor do I know how to get them to generate so I am completely at a loss here.
Thanks so much!

Question Notification Issue

I found that my Facebook Messenger app and Snapchat Map don't notify me when new messages come in.
I've successfully run the debloat script.
Using Nova Launcher.
I've also checked my notifications and turned off silent notifications for almost every app.
I'm at a standstill.
I really like this phone but I wish we could flash the OS which would solve everything. Any ideas?
Install heartbeat fixer for gcm app, set it to autostart and 1 minute interval. Also give it all rights possible.
Do the same with fcm toolbox app.
Don't use dark mode (system wide).
All apps need to be set to high battery use (the above and the ones you want to get notifications from).
Disable priority notifications.
Or get another notifications app altogether, but above should be enough.
Dark mode is okay, as long as you have no single messaging app with a muted (group) chat. Yeah sounds strange as f**k but that's the culprit for most.
If you have one muted chat it will break all fcm notifications after a 5-10 minutes screen off delay. The same is not only true for dark mode but also battery saver or similar. Can only run this phone in balanced or performance mode without breaking notifications should there be a muted chat.
Actually fcm toolbox may fix the dark mode problems, but I'm not sure it's fully reliable in dark mode.
Sometimes it crashes nonetheless, then reboot is needed (this is like every two weeks once)
Don't forget to lockdown all apps you need notifications from in the recent apps drawer and never swipe them up. (Yes all apps working with fcm it's enough if one stays open besides fcm toolbox and heartbeat fixer).

I was unable to download heartbeat fixer because it said the app is too old for my phone.
But apparently dark mode is the issue. After I turned it off, everything started popping up.
That's super unfortunate.
You can install it anyhow as apk with adb. Installing FCM Toolbox and Heartbeat fixer is the only way to use dark mode (if you have muted chats) on this phone. It's really lousy that Vivo has this bug since a long time, and doesn't manage to fix it (same on many other vivo phones). I mean notifications are and elementary function of a smartphone (especially with a not usable AOD as on the Vivo) and Vivo botched it on nearly all of their China OS phones (I thing Funtouch also has the dark mode bug on most phones - not sure).
I tried that way with adb and it just isn't working for me. Unless I'm doing something wrong.
I did find an alternative just now:
1) Don't use dark mode --- not a big deal for me, cool.
2) launch the apps that are sending notifications (messenger... snapchat)
3) swipe up to show all apps running and lockdown the ones that aren't working.
As long as the apps continue to run in the background, the notifications work.
I'm regretting not choosing Samsung.

How to fix notifications on Vivo X90 Pro+
Seeing as there are dozens of people who are claiming issues with receiving notifications. I figured it's time to make this thread. The following has worked for me to restore notifications for every single app I use. To date, I have had...

Does anyone have a guess on why dark mode is unable to show notifications, and why Vivo think it works fine?

Well I think vivo somehow collapses on muted group chats in dark mode. Why it only happens in dark mode is the bigger mistery. It explains why it works for some people however (those not having a muted group chat).
Vivo doesn't seem to care at all. Seen quite a few people on bilibili claiming they only speak with a bot on support.
And yes, the only way for them to react would be likely receiving loads of returns with reason horrible software. Or important reviewers like Xiao Bai complaining. As long as the YouTubers and reviews mention software as an afterthought, likely because they never use phones as daily driver hence not notice those problems, nothing will change.
They do know phones get exported from China and seem to be fine as long as they don't sell the same model abroad..
Likely if trading Shenzhen gets loads of returns and complaints they would listen too. maybe only if TS delists them...
Alright, we're done. It was a simple ask... let's breathe and go our separate ways folks.
@luontokoodaus -- I appreciate all the work you've put into for fellow Vivo users.

Although I switched on "show on lock screen" for Spotify, it's still not showing.
Is the related to the darkmode notification issue?

It most likely is. After I turned off dark mode, my notifications started popping up on lock screen and some apps still continued to give me trouble so I locked them to continuously run in the background and now all is well.
There are some issues when in dark mode , viber for example doesnt show notifications on lock screen ( it lights up screen with no sound or content displayed) , so for now the solution is to be in light mode for now. Its too bad that vivo doesnt fix this, with some minor software changes this would be 10 out of 10 phone.
Talking about dark mode, previous model such was X80 had the same issue, but got fixed after software update, so I believe X90 will get that sorted out as well in the future
