Youtube HDR - Mate 10 Pro - Huawei Mate 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi all
Maybe I am wrong, but some time ago I could not see HDR mark on the video in YT,
Now with the latest updated (from 21 May) it seems that new app supports HDR on Mate 10 Pro

HDR is working now on YouTube app.
And I want to mention that I've compared mate 10 pro display with samsung S8 plus and S10 plus playing hdr videos and the result is that Mate 10 pro has the most beautiful display, collors are more realistic, there is a huge difference..... Mate 10 pro display is better than samsung one, the clarity is superiour, collors more realistic and it is an oled pannel too. I can't believe that mate 10 pro display is soo good, I'm a Samsung fan but Mate 10 pro impressed me.

They may have some different displays' settings, you've got it?
So, it's a tnin matter – the real test on the same settings.
And we know nothing about yours, dude.

As long as he is happy lol. Anyways its mostly subjective.... nobody cares about some HDR video testing. to this date HDR is barely available for normal youtube content nor other apps etc. so who cares? In the end any decent oled screen with decent brightness will do the job.

Displays were set to vivid to all the phones. Mate 10 pro showed more realistic collours. Test it yourself and see if I am right.
My phone is Mate 10 pro bla l09 single sim model.
The other two phones are from some of my friends.
Galaxy s8 plus refreshes at 1080p with hdr, and at 4k with hdr it runs even harder. Galaxy s10 plus works well in both resolutions. Iven the display resolution is higher on samsung phones the clarity and the colour calibration is better in my mate 10 pro, in my opinion.

Camera, Huawei P9 or Samsung S7 Edge?

I need a new phone, and am currently interested in the Huawei P9 Plus or the Samsung S7 Edge.
The main tak of my new phone should be for video and photography (besides me using it as a phone )
Which one is the better camera?
Based on experience
For video the Samsung is the better phone (4K Video). Based on reading the spec sheets.
Moreover the S7E has the optical image stabilization (OIS) that is very useful especially for video recording.
And now the international unbranded S7E can be found with a price slightly lower than the P9+.
Huawei P9 plus
I have used samsung for 6 years .. I never saw any of their cameras that can match that of the P9 or P9 plus .
The P9 line has the Leica double lens technology , it does not need OIS to perform in a superior way .. I am now the proud owner of the P9 plus ..

Hello Craleb,
Why do you say that? Is that based on personal experience, or is that based om comparing the specs of both phone?

Personal experience here:
Video : S7 Edge => OIS is a win. P9 Plus come with digital IS but your video will still be choppier and trimmed due to the technology.
Photo : S7 Edge => Much superior autofocus and low-light performance (f/1.7). Both perform admirably during daytime so the difference here come down pretty much to personal preference. I personally like the Leica interface and some of the modes come with that (shoot first, focus later, filters, light photography, night mode etc). P9 tends to get a little too grainy during low-light shots and slow to get a focus on things.
Black&White Photography : P9 Plus, hands down. No B&W filter can come close to the level of details and contrast that the dedicated cam on the P9 Plus can bring. The result is just gorgeous even when you shoot the most random stuff.
As far as the potential of the tech go, P9 Plus has much more potential. The post processing and the lowlight performance can theoretically be improved with a software update but I wont hold my hope for that. As is now, the S7 Edge still has the edge (forgive the pun) when you consider the overall performance for things you use daily. So unless you are a big fan of B&W photography, pick the Edge.
Great review. That confirms pretty much the general opinion on the online reviews I've read elsewhere. Have you played with RAW images at all? Just wondering if that improves things.
The S7 is sharp, detailed and hard to fault
but the P9 has its charms. It leans heavily on artistic styling, where image fidelity comes second. sometimes it has trouble focusing and without ois blur is fairly common in low light situations.
Some people look Samsung oversharpening filter as more detail... but it's really exaggerated on S7/S7E.

yer that's valid. tbh the output from the S7 cam doesn't show any improvement over the S6
compared side by side when zoomed right in, P9 pics do show a noticeable lack of detail however

I don't know, some people use auto mode rather than night mode in low light... I have some doubts about it.
In good light it seems great.
I would test it

One thing to consider regarding the P9 camera is that it has issues with popular apps. As of today, the camera doesn't work properly with WhatsApp or Snapchat. You get odd issues like auto zoom, slowmo videos, audio issues.....and no update from Huawei to fix.

Samsung can shoot 120 and 240 fps. Big deal for slow mo lovers.
Huawei p9 plus destroys samsung s7 edge in terms of camera,p9 plus can do manual configuration, just need to study about iso, exposure, shutter etc. just like DSLR,if auto i take S7 edge, but if manual mode,Big YES for Huawei P9 Plus.

UPDATED! Shock horror. Mate 10 vs Mate 9 display!!b

Ok maybe a little dramatic but still - a little disappointing.
I have done a few tests. Played the exact same HDR YouTube videos at the exact same time with my Mate 9 and Mate 10 one above the other in landscape mode. The Mate 9 is MUCH brighter than the Mate 10 on maximum brightness. I have factored turning off auto brightness and turned off Smart resolution etc etc. They also have different colour temperatures even if you set them both to warm, default or cold - they still look different.
I have tried HDR videos on both phones and I see absolutely no difference. I studied the colours so hard. I see absolutely no difference between a 1440p video and a 1080p video playing at the same time. In fact, most times the Mate 9 looks sharper and more vibrant. Also shockingly the Mate 9 offered for example 1080p 60fps option on a video whereas the Mate 10 offered maximum 720p 60fps on the same video. 1080p was nowhere in the list. What the hec! Battery at 100% so no resolution switching to save power.
Basically, it is true 1440p is wasted on a phone. There is no difference on a small screen such as a phone. All these people saying "yeah but X phone only has a 1080p screen" don't realise that it doesn't really matter. It all looks the same.
So I hear the Mate 10 is HDR 10 compatible and yet I don't see it with my eyes. If I am doing something wrong and someone wants to correct me, please DO. I want to be wrong.
What are your tests and opinions?
Despite all this, I still love the phone. ?
I take it all back.
I have discovered YouTube does not show HDR10 output even if the video says so.
ONLY the built in video player supports true HDR10 content.
I downloaded these HDR sample videos from an XDA post:
https://mega.nz/#F!jYwlgbBA!piXwD8sYa7zjsRtjStuAyw
Play them in the default video player and they look stunning. I took a screenshot of a paused video and when opened up in gallery, the colours were bland compared to the actual playing footage. Proof enough.
Phew! This phone is amazing!
Do you get higher peak brightness when in vivid mode ?
AFAIK - Currently Netflix is the only third party app supporting HDR 10 for this phone
Youtube coming soon though,
So, you might want to change your thread title, LoL

Of course it's the same because mate 10 comes preset to 1080p lol. And stop listening to tech reviewers the are dumb, only way to see it 1080p and 2k is to use magnifying object like camera or glass etc. I have iPhone 7 plus, LG G6, Moto Z play, Essential phone and the s8 which I sold because of burn in, I don't see the dots pixel on any off them because I don't look for it, they all looks the same some are brighter and vibrant than others. That's it.
Another thing, the max brightness on auto is superior than the manual max brightness. That happen on a bunch of smartphones.
So, it's dumb to compare max brightness with the auto setting turned off.
The best way to compare it, is going outdoor with the auto checked on both and look which one seems brighter.

Mate 10 Pro - Pie review?

Hi everyone
Since android's version of Android PIE, is slowling rolling out to Mate 10 Pro's, has anyone yet made or found, a review of the changes, specifically for the Mate 10 Pro?
Sure, there's a couple of reviews & Youtube videos of the Beta version and of EMUI 9, but I'm looking specifically for the official PIE update on the Mate 10 Pro.
Anyone found a review yet?
Not really
I'm using it for a week now. It looks better. Battery life was bad over the first 2 days after the update but it's better now ( slightly better than Oreo). Some stutter is happening here and there but not too much. Free ram seems to get lower ,so apparently using more ram. Camera is much better.
Can you specify in what way the camera got better ? picture quality ? video quality ? night mode ? exposure ?
I haven't gotten an update since April last year, so I got EMUI 9 and all the intermediate changes all at once. Camera is insanely better, it doesn't overexpose at all like it used to, back in EMUI 8 the camera overexposed everything all the time. I got 960fps slowmo from only having 240fps one. I got hand-held night shot that works exactly like the P20 Pro, works wonders. The interface is changed I have to get used to that, it's not bad. I can also turn off Master AI now, couldn't do that before...

4k 25fps possible?

Im still undecided weather im going to go with this phone or the realme x2 pro...
The 855+ over the 855 isnt really a big deal for me... But the camera is.
It appears that the realme x2 pros camera gives more realistic colours and contrast over the 9t pro... But its still pretty close to the line...
The MP rating mean nothing as there upscaled MP no the native sensor MP rating. Ive still yet to find the true MP rating for both cameras...
Anyway, Ive asked this in the realme forum too...
Can the camera be put into 25 or 24 fps mode? I do youtube videos and tbh 30p sampling to 25fps is adds flicker... its really not ideal at all...
I would like to be able to record my videos on 25 fps if possible... Can this phone be put in that mode? Maybe with open camera?
My old redmi note 4 cant go into 25fps with open camera... but can this?
Anyway if anyone can let me know

I cant "test it" because i dont own the phone.... Im asking before i buy!
I don't know if there's a way of forcing it but I'm running the Syberia Rom with ANX cam and Urnyx GCam, 4k30/4k60 are options but 4k/25 is not.
Filmic evaluator doesn't report 25hz as an option either just the maximum of 4k60.
Hope that helps!

1. I don't know where you got the info that Realme X2 Pro camera gives more realistic colours because it's not true and it gives oversaturated colours while Mi 9t Pro gives natural and more realistic colours.
2. You can record 24 or 25fps up to 4K on Mi 9T Pro with Filmic Pro(see screenshot below).

That's just made things more confusing....
I'm pretty sure that's what side by side comparisons said...
So you're saying the 9t camera IS better?
Though I tried to find that app on playstore and it wouldn't show up... Wither not available in the UK. Or this phone isn't comparable and the store won't show me it... (this phone being my old one)

I'm not saying that 9t pro camera is better, it's about the same or a little bit worse than on x2 pro. I'm saying that 9t pro camera gives more natural and realistic photos compared to oversaturated and oversharpened photos on x2 pro.
I don't know why you can't find Filmic pro, it's the best app of that type. Here you have link to that app so try to open it and you will know the reason why you can't find it(instead of install there should be red letters notification telling you is it your phone's fault or your region's fault):

Just because filmic pro says it allows recording in 24 fps doesn't mean that the footage will be 24 fps. On my old SGS4 I have 30, 25 and 24 fps available but the footage is always 30 fps.
In order to establish what you can do, you need to make a test capture and then check it with mediainfo app.

Question Dolby vision yes or no on the mi11 normal?

Im looking for a Native 10 bit QHD Oled phone panel with atleast 510 ppi 6,7 inch screen size.
I came at the OnePlus 8 Pro the Oppo Find X3 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 11.
The X3 pro is 200 euro's more costly then the oneplus 8 and the xiaomi about 130 euro more.
I had thought the mi 11 had dolby vision but maybe this is only for thexiamoi ultra and the mi 11 Lite?
Seems strange if the base model wouldn't have it but the lite budget version would.
The ultra version doesn't seem to be sold anyway in my country (holland)

I have the Xiaomi Mi11 and find it fantastic it may not have Dolby vision but it has HDR 10+ 6.8" screen with 1500nits peak brightness, very smooth 480htz sampling and 120htz screen. The sound is amazing for a phone, great camera's and an IR blaster to annoy your friends Down the pub when you turn the TV from footy to a soap. But the choice is yours.

Yes aside from dolby vision the other stats seem perfect.
So what you are saying is only the ultra and the lite version have dolby vision?

I would say they're both similar just did a side by side comparison on GSM Arena and they are both good, and yes the mi 11 does upscale any videos.
The screenshots you send. Thanks!!! by the way!
1. Seems to do with motions
2. HDR AI enhancement.. I suppose this is only for HDR content
3. Upscale videos that are not native ress to native ress I suppose
Number 3 might be the same as the " video image sharpener" in Oppo
However for SDR to HDR technology and bright HDR video there does not seem to be such option. Now maybe bright HDR video option might not be needed since the firmware already does what it needs to do in a way it lieks or something i dont know.
But the SDR to HDR technology seems really interesting to me. Especially since I will be streaming my desktop to my phone alot. I don't know how useful this is. but if it isn't on the xiaomi 11 might be a shame idk.
Just found this on the oppo site hmm
The O1 Ultra Vision Engine supports Video Image Sharpener and Video Colour Enhancer features, which are implemented only for certain adapted apps.
The Video Image Sharpener is available for Photos and YouTube, whereas the Video Colour Enhancer is available for YouTube.
"You can only enable one of the functions at one time."
Doesn't seem to help with moonlight streaming then I suppose.
Also I see there is an option "enhanced countours",on the Mi 11X though.

The first time I saw a hdr video on the mi 11 it seems to be very bright but does not have very wide color gamut, so I tested it with my colorimeter . when playing a hdr video it switches to profile that able to get very bright, I think for a medium patch around it measured 1000 nits but the color gamut measure only 83 precept of dci-p3. It not very bad as the high brightness give a perceived look of a more saturated color. When you are on sdr mode, there are very good color profiles. The original color color mode target a SRGB(99%) .It has very low de 2000 and have good white point. You also can change the white point. The p3 color mode target dci-p3(95%).The average of de2000 1.3 ,max 2.9.It does not support hdr as it will switch automatically when watching a hdr video. Also, the dci-p3 mode does not allow very high brightness (not an issue as you won't need it on sdr ). As you lower the brightness you start to crush black on dc dimming, when not on dc dimming it switch the pwm frequency and does not crush blacks until quite low brightness. You can switch to 90 hz mode, and it won't crush black on dc dimming but has green tint (worst while display a gray color), you can change the white level to reduce it . The display has a Diamond sub pixel arrangement and not rgb but still very sharp because of a very high resolution. It is much sharper than a full hd oled with Diamond sub pixel arrangement . I really like this display.I use original color mode with 90 hz . For me, a display that do not crush blacks looks so much better, especially for watching video. I saw so many phones with oled screen that crush black and look not good.
