Petition to fix low audio volume using headphones - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

I have just received my P20 Pro.
Like some of you have discovered the audio output to wired devices is significantly lower than rival phones. I have done some comparisons to my Nexus 6 audio output. I have found that the P20 Pro is much quieter ( almost 4dB difference)
Here are some pictures to back this information up I'm currently in talks with Huawei about this. Any extra information or confirmation of the issue in this thread could help us significantly with getting this issue fixed (as there are software methods to resolve this)
I have also made a petition so solve this!
I would like some help in sharing this and can you guys sign this please!
https://www.change.org/p/huawei-fix...m_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=share_petition

Yes, you can use the Mate 10 Pro volume mod to significantly boost it without distortion, if you have root.

I know this but why should we have to root our phones to fix an issue within the software Huawei should fix this straight away

Also it's quite funny that i have found that the volume difference is almost -4dB with the P20 pro but the audio mod is +4dB. I find this quite a disappointment. Surely Huawei would want another reason for people to buy the P20/Pro. Or any other of there devices. I had the exact same issue with my honor 8. It seems a little strange IMHO.
Also I have provided Huawei with all the information on this that I have found. I may make a petition on getting this issue resolved and share it with other Huawei/Honor devices.

I have made a petition link is above!

I've noticed this. It's been a big bug bare for me. Ordering HTC type C to jack dongle which arrived today. It makes for a much richer, fuller and louder sound than in the box dongle. If you sign up to HTC club it's only £5.

the actual audio output is quieter through the software too. would be helpful if you could sign my petition?

Come on guys! Please sign the petition!

Signed. Bluetooth earphones work perfectly fine though. Bought some soundpeats for £20

I have no issues with Bluetooth audio to be honest. But the wired is a whole different story. It's a shame too. As the P20 Pro is a brilliant phone but why let something like that slip through the net?

Why is my unit louder than the Mate 10 Pro using wired headphones? I turn the volume one notch down compared to where I used to set the volume on the Mate 10 Pro.

Because Huawei can't decide on a volume on their phones. My P8 was perfectly fine in volume until a software update. Then the volume dropped significantly. They need to fix these issues. And keep them consistent between hardware IMHO

Seriously? If I use 100% with headphone I'm pretty sure I already deteriore my ears so I'd prefer to launch a petition to lower the higher volume on hearphones.

@reggaemanu why would you do that when the physical proof that the P20 Pro is -4dB don't play your music at 100% if you find it too loud turn it down it's not like we can turn it up past its maximum point

42 signature's guys!

Almost 50 signatures!

Come on guys we have 71 signitures

Sent complain to Huawei by their form. Bluetooth audio is in my opinion not acceptable at all. Based on comparison to my previous Huawei phones, this one is just terrible.

Hey guys, are your headphones still very quiet? Has the system version upgrade solved this problem? What is the version of your mobile phone system now? Is it your headset problem,Did you get the same result with the rest of the headphones?

Audio quality in video recordings

I'm looking to record some local live music events and am wondering how the audio quality is when recording video on the P20 Pro. Does it distort and become shrill at higher volume levels? (not stadium concert-level - more like a band at a bar or similar).
I realize for best results an external mic is preferred, but I don't have one just yet. Currently I'm using a Note 8 and it does fairly well, but I wanted something with better battery life.

I tried recording audio at an outdoor concert and the audio was unusable. It was an older software version but I am unsure it'll be any better on .110 update.
Has anyone tried any external mic on the p20 pro? i tried using it but it doesnt detect the external mic and records with the internal mic.

Thank you so much for this post djl!!! I might be buying this so that's important.
On a scale of 1-10, how clear would you say it was from the last couple concerts you attended took video recordings of?? Your response would be GREATLY appreciated!! :good:

I think it would be better if you'll listen for your selves. Here is the link for a recording of a little performance in a shopping center https://mega.nz/#!fxwmwCRC!aPdjZ3r_26vEEFuFz-v4mnWtyM7UIS4n4DjrsfnMHkA

Well, I used it for a very loud Guns n Roses concert, and the bass totally destroyed higher tones. The phone muted sound when bass appeared, and videos were useless

Hmm ok. Hopefully they fix that in an update or at least on the P30 Pro.
I went ahead and got the OnePlus 6T, but there's a good chance I may upgrade again in the spring to either the Sony Xperia XZ3 Premium (or XZ4 Premium?), Samsung S10+, OnePlus 7, or P30 Pro. We'll see.

I use the Galaxy S9+ for now. The video performance is much better, and pictures does not look oil painted.
When I zoomed at pictures at P20 they went bad very quickly, were S9+ are much better. Maybe why is not possible to zoom much at stock Huawei gallery
I had some lag at wifi remote Logitech hub, thats gone on S9+, lag at Google Photos is also gone, all notifications is 100%, while P20 were close from Huawei standard, On dual SIM I can see who's calling on second SIM while talking on first, which never happened on P20
, much better vibration on T9+, But P20 pro did have better battery life, about 1 hour more, while I never ran out on juice at S9+ with easy wireless charge. And P20 has the infrared remote too.
I do look forward to Galaxy S10+ and did not bather the Mate 20 pro where problems are similar to P20 pro

Nice! Yeah that was the issue I had with the Xperia XZ3 that just came out. Love the phone overall, but the camera was a letdown. It was great at outdoor photos and selfies, but indoor not so much. Def had some of that "oil painting" issue as well. Sony f'd that up b/c the previous phone, the XZ2 Premium, had like an excellent camera on it including a dual lens, where the XZ3 is single lens. But the XZ2 P's screen was a step back as it was LCD, and it didn't have T-Mobile VoLTE either. Anyway.........wow really? Ok. My issue with the Samsung and Apple (and even Huawei) phones is they don't seem to be color accurate, but instead tend to gravitate towards "warmer tones". Some ppl like that, but I don't. But for everything else they seem great.
Wow you're making me happy I didn't get the P20 Pro. I ACTUALLY ordered it last weekend but then cancelled it on Amazon before it shipped. lol And so yeah instead now I got the OnePlus 6T coming from T-Mobile. (trading in my LG V30 to T-Mobile for that $300 trade-in deal they had going). With the modded GCam app from XDA, the pics should come out really nice, though not from what I can see of samples, still not AS nice as Samsung's, Sony's, Apple's and Pixel's. So I dunno. But it might surprise me too! The XDA devs are constantly improving it. And when I compared it using the STOCK 6T camera to my LG V30 + its GCam mod, the 6T was actually a bit more detailed and color-accurate too. So it's up in the air now as to how good it will be. I just hate buying unlocked phones when it comes to reception. T-Mobile's about to deploy Band 71 (aka 600 MHz) in my area (Chicagoland) by year's end, and yeah Samsung will have it esp if I get a phone from them from T-Mobile, but Sony and Huawei? Nope. Hopefully next year they both will though. It's like come on be more competitive guys! lol Even unlocked 6T has it, so what's their excuse? lol
Yeah P20 Pro's battery is great, and 6T's is rated 1 hour higher on GSM Arena, which is nice. P20 Pro's is rated 3 hours higher than the S9+. That was another draw but in the end, I was made to believe the 6T with GCam mod could come very close in at least daytime shots, and with it having Pixel's Night Sight ported, I thought it could do the same for night. I don't know if that will actually happen though. We'll see. Phone comes within the next few days.
Yeah the S10+ is on my list so I will check it out. I just WISH Samsung would stop with the warmer tones. If they had I very seriously would've considered the Note 9 or S9+. The Mate 20 Pro................didn't have T-Mo VoLTE, so that was an instant fail for me. But if it had I would've prob got that over the 6T cuz I think slightly better camera than P20 Pro. The P20 Pro's Night Mode though is ridiculous. No other camera comes close. I guess it's really hard to find the perfect phone, esp if you're kinda picky about certain things like me. lol

Yes I can confirm it. Exactly the same happened with me on GNR this summer.
They say the newer Mate 20 Pro improved upon the video quality, so I guess you can always upgrade to that too, or wait for the P30 Pro. Though what sux is because of all this crap about Huawei being spies, it seems that the reception quality will suffer. The P20 Pro for example had VoLTE on it and therefore for like T-Mobile, you could access their Band 12 radio band, which has twice the range and four times the capability to penetrate through walls & buildings.
On T-Mobile, you can only access it if the phone is certified with them, which many unlocked phones are, but many aren't. The P20 Pro was, but the Mate 20 Pro wasn't, which is why despite wanting it (Mate 20 Pro) badly, I ended up getting the OnePlus 6T through a great T-Mobile promotion. Not sure if VoLTE works on Verizon or AT&T, but maybe? You'd have to check on here. HOPEFULLY the P30 Pro though will have it and also Band 71 too, which T-Mobile is currently deploying all over the place, and should be mostly done doing by the end of this year. Neither the P20 Pro or Mate 20 Pro has that, but I'm hoping the P30 Pro will. However, the way things are going, I have strong doubts.
My p20 pro audio quality during live video recording at concerts also sucks
have the same issue with p20 pro. after giving it so many tries recording live videos for bands and live music, i can finally say that my samsung s8 plus owns the p20 pro in recording in concerts/bars/loud music anyday*
Its worth noting that my s8 plus audio input/output is at MONO which has the small single speaker next to the charging port. not sure if the fact thats its mono makes it recorder clearer audio? Or perhaps it has noise cancelling feature in the software.*
For the P20 pro, I hope someone has a solution for this noisy live recording issue. I tried to play with the camera setting and audio setting but same results.
I' have same Issue ?.
There is a software way to Fix it? Seams that this phone have some sorta of audio filters enabled

Galaxy buds

Is anyone using Galaxy Buds with their P30 pro? I've just switched from the Galaxy S10+ and I've found that when I use the galaxy buds with the P30 pro I'm getting really poor call quality on the receiver's end. Sounds fine for me, but people on the other end say they have trouble hearing me and that I sound like I'm underwater. When I switch back to the S10+ then my calls sound normal again. Anyone else experiencing this issue, or have any suggestions?
I think the issue is the buds itself i read about that issue with other phones as well. There supposed to some updates from Samsung to improve the quality. I have one myself I don't mind the audio for listening it's pretty decent however the call quality is crap a lot of feed back. I don't really care to be honest since i only use it mostly for music. I really like it for the comfort and case size it's nice and small compared to others. Could there be improvements for sure. But you'll probably need to pay a higher price if you want something better overall. But even with the expensive ones that I've seen the casing way to big for me. To be honest i'm eyeing on the Google buds waiting for those one to be available like to see how good they are.

That's the strange thing though, they sound fine when I pair them with the S10+, it's only when I pair them with the P30 pro that the call quality sucks, which doesn't really make sense to me. I'll try them out with a couple more devices to see whether it's the buds themselves that don't play well with non-Samsung devices or whether it's the P30 pro that doesn't like them.

Poor sound quality output ?

Hi there..
I've just bought my X2 Pro and I'm so satisfied with it.
But the main point is the sound quality output is so poor and lakes the details,
I'm coming from Xiaomi Note 5 AI and the sound with my earphones Xiaomi Pro HD Hybrid was so awesome and high detailed (really HD Audio) and the clarity was so fine with it,
But when I plug the earphones with the X2 Pro I notice the big difference, it became so poor and distortion is visible like I bought cheap earphones or somethining
I tried hard with the Dolby Atmos settings but with no good
Please help me guys, I'm so disappointed!
Any help?
The output from the headphones is very low even if kept on full volume . I was using oppo f9 pro without any Dolby Atmos in it but still the output quality and sound was just up to the next level and m using same Sony in ear sports edition expensive headphones with X2 pro however very very disappointed . I think we should report this to realme and ask them to fix it in their next software update coz it's a Flagship device from realme and they have priced it close to OnePlus 7 series. I still regret not buying OnePlus 7 just to save some bucks.
Bought this street using the k20 pro. The audio at high volume has a lot of distortion and disturbance. Is it a software glitch? If so, can someone tell me how to solve this?
Amplifier sucks here, that's all. It's the same story with all these mid-range phones and budget flagships. They may have kept the headphone jack, but it's essentially useless for anybody who cares even a little bit about sound quality.
Get a $30 dongle and move on.
Contrarry to what you guys report. I am using Poweramp, with equalizer tweaked to my likings, output from the 3.5mm jack is phenomenal. I am using signature acoustics c12 with high res wav and flac file formats..cant comment about Atmos but yes the volume is just about adequate, not low but certainly not loud..

Question Galaxy Buds pro static noise

Hello,
I am facing a problem with my buds pro, whenever Ambient mode or ANC is activated there is a weird hissing /static noise on my left earbud. I updated to the lastet firmware and reset the buds but still the same issue.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Sorry. Mine don't do that. Since you already reset the buds, not sure what else you could try.
My right bud pro has this issue.
I reread your Q and checked out this new Buds product.
Could be hardware or firmware. Took Samsung 1.5 years to finally get the SSC algorithm/ firmware right with Buds+ so don't hold your breath.
I'm still comparing the two but if audio quality is the same I go with the Buds+.
ANC is lot harder to implement and can degrade the sound quality.
These are sealed so background noise usually isn't a deal breaker.
So far I'm still leaning towards the Buds+
I want a definite HQ audio upgrade more than ANC.
Goofy Samsung... is good at dropping the ball.
Just to update you guys, after endless calls with samsung support France ( where I live). I ended up returning the unit and getting a new one, the new ones don't have any issue right out of the box.
The store told me that it was not uncommon so I guesss it's a hardware problem.
Thank you all for your replies!

Yay!
Samsung Tech Support sucks, trying to use it is believing. They won't cross ship either; they need the return before they send out the new ones.
Did you get lucky? If so it's a sure sign of a known defect. Either way, well done
Remember to update their firmware if updates are available...
Do you have the Buds+?
Have far does the bass extend on the Pro's?
Cutoff for the Buds+ is 27hz, at 35hz it's strong.
Cutoff for the Buds is 30hz; low bass is noticeably weaker and more distorted than the +'s.
Anyone who has a pair of the Buds+ and the Buds Pro please post your opinion of your listening experience between the two.

If it happened after a firmware flash it is either a bad flash or bad firmware.
The former is more likely if only a few are doing it. There's no way to recover from a bad flash that I'm aware off short of sending them in for repair. The next update may undo a bad flash if it's a complete copy of the firmware. Not sure.
Be very careful when doing a Buds firmware flash. I've done over a half a dozen with no issue but it only takes one bad flash.
I faced the same issue with my buds pro, the static noise seemed to be annoying.. But suddenly it started working fine, I still didn't figure out what the problem was.. Hoping it doesn't happen again..

You have a Samsung device? If so it's a no brainer to go with one of the Buds.
Because all the Buds use the Samsung proprietary codec SSC they should blow Airpods away on a Samsung I would think.
The Buds are designed for Samsung and interface seamlessly.
The Buds+ never fall out, which is what I use.
I'm hesitant to go to the Pro's because of possible fit issues and the +'s have a very long battery life.
For music listening Poweramp's equalizer dials them in well. If you have an extensive music database Poweramp is well worth it. Requires a lot of setup but is completely able to be backed up 100% as long as the music database is intact.
Yes i have a Samsung S20 and a Apple XS Max too.
So need to use the earphones with both the devices. Have been trying to get a demo from someone who owns them, but all attempts thusfar have been futile.

If you use the Samsung a lot get the Buds+ if you want a sealed bud. The Buds+ support all the lame codecs that Apple has got but the interface will almost certainly suffer.
The Buds are integrated for Samsung's; if there's no Wearables Manager for Apples there will be loss of functionality when using on with Apple.
May work ok for basic calls, no clue though.
Sorry, I'm not an Apple guy... strictly PC and Android.

I never tried the Pro. I like the sealed, compact Buds+. They don't fall out. 11 hour run time.
Airpods don't support LDAC or SSC codecs so you're stuck with SBC. They're bulky and look goofy. A poor choice for a Samsung phone.
Is there a way to connect fake Samsung buds pro? I know that if they are not original, it does not work with the app, but is there any way to hack the app or do something with the headphones? Perhaps by modifying the headphones they become compatible, either by software or hardware. I ask if it is possible.

Question Buzzing in top speaker

My unit had heavy distortion in the top speaker when at max volume. Basically the earpiece would have a buzzing sound when playing any music with low frequency content from around 300Hz to 500Hz. This is reminiscent of the buzzing problems seen in the Pixel 3 and iPhone X.
I'm wondering if this is a one off issue.
To test visit this link:
https://szynalski.com/tone#399,v1
Make sure your phone is at max volume, and pay attention to see if your top speaker is "buzzing" as you change the frequency.
I don't know if it is the same thing you are hearing of course, but on max volume the top speaker make a slightly buzzing noise, as if it was vibrating a bit too hard.
Oof, sounds like this may be a widespread problem.
For me this is actually significantly worse than the iPhone X buzzing problem (https://9to5mac.com/2017/11/12/iphone-x-speaker-buzzing-distortion/). I had an iPhone X which was replaced free of cost by Apple.
I don't really consider this acceptable in a $1000 device.
Also reminds me of the similar issues that plagued Pixel 3 devices
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/bk8h0c
. Google apparently had software updates. But a brief search indicates that this problem was not fixed for many users in software.
I suspect this is a widespread hardware defect in the Find X3 Pro that Oppo will have to fix in manufacturing.

Neither did I. It seems the Oppo Find X3 Pro has a different resonance frequency than the Pixel 3. My unit buzzes super heavily when a dude is speaking in a video, but not on the piano video.
I can consistently get my top earpiece to buzz abnormally at max volume at around 400Hz.
Not sure if this is a serious enough issue for you, but I initiated a return outside of the seven day period, and Oppo accepted the buzzing phone as a defective unit after I recorded a video.
I'm hesitant to accept a replacement unit (compared to just refund) if this issue is widespread.

I'm not comfortable sharing the video as Oppo asked me to provide identifying information (serial, proof of purchase) in the video, and I don't know enough about how to edit the video.
But the buzzing at 400Hz was audible.
What about making a new one without all that information?
Or have you sent it back already?
Just sent it back today. Now I need to decide to accept a refund or a replacement
One reviewer for the Find X3 Pro indicates the issues is also present on their review unit after I reached out in private, but did not believe this was something Oppo would fix unless attention was brought into the issue.

Perhaps Oppo will pay attention and fix this in a hardware revision.
Hello , owner since yesterday of an Oppo Find X3 pro , and as i am still looking to get to know the phone and going into some tests (screen , colour accuracy , sound etc ) i did not got that buzzing sound that some other users sadly face....what i wanted to ask is , is there any YT video that we can use as a " sample" to check our own devices? mainly asking because here in Germany we have 2 weeks time to return no-questions-asked every electronic device..
thanks
That's super great to hear!
From the few data points I've seen on social media, it seems like the problem is present on a majority of Oppo Find X3 Pros, but they are either not of the same severity, or people do not notice it to the same degree.

Looking at the second reddit post, I agree with the poster that the issue is very noticeable on zoom when a man is speaking. The lower frequencies in the voice makes the issue super obvious.
Longer term, it would be great if you could reach out to Oppo if you do have the issue.

Can you replicate the problem using the frequency generator?

For me the problem seems to be most serious at around 400Hz, but is starting at around 300Hz.
