960fps Recording Artifacts - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

I'm on firmware 120, and I just noticed this in 960fps recording. Anyone else?

Yes, but it varies a lot, depending on lighting.
Looks like your video was shot inddors in low light? I get better results outdoors anyhow.

That's because there is a 99% chance, that the P20 Pro does not record at native 960 FPS. It might be 240/480 interpolated to 960 FPS, thus giving artifacts, like the Twixtor plugin for Adobe AE.

Ahh man. This is disappointing. Spent a lot to buy this. Yes, it is indoor, but i did turn on the flash.
Well it is what it is. For motion not that fast, results are brilliant. Those really fast moving objects, i think it cant cope because it's not true 960fps.

[GUIDE/DISCUSSION] [2K] [4K*] [50+ MBPS] Video recording on the Huawei P9 Lite.

This phone continues to amaze me. After discovering RAW still capture, now this.
Apparently the Huawei P9 Lite can record 2K and 4K* video. And to top that with a big juicy cherry, you can get bitrates as high as 70MBS, hovering around a 50MBPS constant. AT 2K resolution. This is quite impressive for a phone camera, I'm talking even flagship level.
I'm not even joking.
I mean why not?! Camera API2 supports 4K, the camera sensor supports 4K, I'm not entirely sure about the SoC, but the Kirin 650 is proving to be one of the better, albeit very comfortably mid-range, chips Huawei has produced.
Everyone can try this on their devices, completely hassle-free, safe, wihtout any mods. You do have to buy an app from the Play Store. It's about $13 and that's that. You install the app and choose your desired resolution in the app settings.
The app is called. FiLMiC Pro
A few remarks:
Be sure to have Crop source to overlay turned OFF when filming 2K, or 4K.
4K is TERRIBLE! It's really quite unusable. I've only been able to get around 5-8 FPS video at 4K. Choppy, lots of lost frames.
2K is however quite usable. Clean video, no missed frames, no artefacting.
I've only just found out this works, very accidentally and with a a lot of surprise and enthusiasm. I need to do a lot more test shots before I can form a solid opinion over the gains and benefits. For now I'm really very hyped and not sure if the difference I see is just placebo or not.
What's certain is that this means a lot for whoever's doing any serious filming with the Huawei P9 Lite. Higher bitrates, the ability to downscale 2K to 1080 for extra *MAGIC*... I can't wait to go out shooting video in real-case scenarios and do more testing on the stability and reliability of shooting at these resolutions.
I'd love for more of you to try this and shoot some video so we can compare findings and share opinions.

Also turns out this is my 1001st post on XDA. Yay.

We're talking about the P9Lite here, not the P10Lite.
With the P9Lite, even with Camera2API enabled, the maximum resolution is still 1080.

the truth of 960 fps slow mo

So huawei stills refusing to tell us the truth of 960 fps.
Adobe after effect (twixtor) users will now what i am talking about.
The p20 pro is incapable of 960 fps video recording. It is just an frame interpolation technique. It may be recording only in 240 fps or 480 fps. Nevertheless, Software interpolation should be improved.
Those two videos show clearly the case
What do you think guys ?
Huawei should work more on that soft interpolation slow mo thing
you need to practice a little to get good results - https://photos.app.goo.gl/QnvGmwrUL5LmmAZe2

Practise what, im showcasing some examples from youtube to compare p20 pro and slow mo interpolation outputs.
Frame rate interpolation is what meant by camera powered by AI, i think
Great findings, the question is is this a bug, SW limitation or hw limitation. The drone part of the video definitely show that there is something weird going on. It would be great to have the same tests with 240fps to see if the result is as sharp as it should be...
Also it might depend of firmware version, it seems they made quite a lot of changes in a short time.
Huawei lie to us....

I have recorded some videos of muzzle blasts from ww2 era rifles,(yes there is a 6 foot flame out the barrel? not much fun on the shoulder though) in 960fps, it looks just like the you tube video, the 240fps looked alot better, I slowed them down as much as I could on the computer, the 960fps was no better than the 60 FPS, in fact I think the 60 FPS on my old windows 950 was better, with the p20 pro the 960 FPS vid played frame by frame was only 30 frames.
Trying to explain that the FPS is not right to so-called experts is a nightmare! I have explained it like this to a few at Huawei and EE, If you have a camera that shoots 900 FPS and you take a 1 second vid then when you play it back you should have 900 'photos' not 30, they still think it's recorded right as as it's slowed down, they cannot see the distortion or the lack of frames, or they choose to ignore you as they have been 'trained' on this phone.
According to meta data the 960 FPS bids are recorded at 30fps, if I connect the phone to the computer, go into the phones video file and right click on a vid for the properties, it says 30gps for the 960, the 250fps is recorded around the 240 mark (the speed is variable)
It is most likely a hardware limitation Huawei worked around with software trickery to get a similar effect. My guess is that Huawei's sensor lacks the on-sensor memory cache which is required for the sensor to be able to record high frame rate video without any of the normal limitations.

That's true
The 960 fps vídeos really look like twixtor vídeos.
But one thing do not make sense.
If it is a 60fps with some sw gimmick to make a 960fps why there is a recording time limit?
Enviado de meu CLT-L29 usando o Tapatalk
Stupid from huawei
They put the same options as of the galaxy s9 to make you believe that it is real 960 fps
I still believe in some hw limitation as a rolling shutter insted of a global shutter that creates this effect similar to twixtor.
If it is only sw it would make more sense to record at 240fps without time cap and afterwards during editing let the user select the time frame to create the super slowmo.
Enviado de meu CLT-L29 usando o Tapatalk
Can anyone clarify that they get these anomalies and if so what fw are you on?
I'm assuming that some of this is software based so it's possible if that's the case that it can be improved.
Really really horrible to see this though, I did a video of some rain whilst on 110 and it was crap.
Small fast moving objects just come out wrong. Solid normal moving objects seem to be perfect.
EG: the wings on a bee from one of the first posts, you can see the blur effect
i also think it's some kind of rolling shutter issue maybe combined with a real 480fps... limiting the record time would otherwise make no sense st all...
i've made a video where it's provoked by a flickering led-illumination. If the illumination is bright it seems to get better.... cannot post the link, as i'm a newbie - some assembly needed by removing two spaces: https: //youtu .be/4bxmu6nhyho
short update on my comment: did some tests with bad/good illumination and now im pretty sure it's a rolling shutter issue (which isn't a surprise, that you need a lot of light for 960fps) videos wil follow soon...
960fps is fake (at least on the p20)
so i analyzed the video files i made with bad illumination and some movies with good illumination frame by frame and the answer is very simple: 960fps is completely fake. it's recorded at 240fps and then interpolated to 960 fps.
If the illumination is bad, it will just copy 4 times the same image which avoids the ugly artifacts. If the illumination is good it interpolates the frames in-between. it sometimes does a great job, sometimes a really bad one...
in the video here you can see the effect of the interpolation working/not working with the small droplet which stays in place for 4 consecutive frames:
https ://youtu. be/DK-A3j-mino
(again assembly required, sorry... remove the space after the "https" and before the "be")

yeah... why is huawei not just honest?!? this way they sell a product intentionally with wrong specs! (with big advertisment on the webpage as well...) to me that's fraud, nothing else.

Super Slow-mo flickering/waves on screen

I just noticed today that my Huawei P20 Pro camera flickers and there's a wave-like flowing on the screen when using Super Slow-mo at x32 and x8 under fluorescent lighting, like in the office. I have yet to try under daylight.

Hiya
This is normal. Slow motion recording especially at the higher fps needs really good light as in outdoors.
A lot of cameras flicker indoors.
Nothing wrong with your phone though, my S9+ was not good at slow mo indoors either.
Because the lights are flickering.

That's the problem... You can't record super slow video under lights (not only p20 pro but with every phone) because of the flickering of lights that your eyes can't see... If you try in phisical light you will see that everything is good...

Maybe you must read better the thread. It's only a point of view or at best a theory.
Although I agree that it does not have the best recording in slow motion
When the winds of change blow, some build walls, others build windmills
It's on high-speed cams, they have tested a number of phone cameras, they say the p20 pro is recording at a slower speed than 960 FPS and is using software to slow it down even more.

The problem is just that your light is flickering.
If, like mine, your light flickers at 50hz, then 960 fps will exhibit worse flickering.

Huawei P30 Pro slow motion.

Hello guys,
I'm wondering about buying this year flagship from Huawei, but i'm very concerned about quality of slow motion videos, it looks really weak comparing to Galaxy S10. Do you think that P30 Pro will get any update that will repair/improve recording videos in slow motion ? Please write your thoughts about that. Best Regards.
I'll just say it, slomo is sht. At 120fps is pretty decent. Anything higher and it looks muddy and doesn't focus. If you kinda care about video recording, maybe wait for the s10 5g. It'll be the one to beat for now.

Yes, it isn't that bad, and actually focuses correctly.
As above, the slow mo is pants compared to other cameras. It doesn't record at 960fps properly, it actually records at 240fps and then interpolates the missing frames.
It can be best witnessed with something rotating. For example I shot this example video of a fidget spinner: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ET1X4yPteuCpkJ8d7
As you can see when the slow mo kicks in, the surrounding areas of movement are a little blurry because the software is doing what it can. Admittedly, for an interpolated video it's quite impressive, but compared to a 'full-fat' 960fps video it just looks lack-lustre.

It depends on what you're filming. If you find something close up (like a fidget spinner) the quality issues are visible.

As a comparison, this is a video I shot on the Xperia XZ Premium in 2017 - the first 960fps phone camera - and it's all so much smoother and crisp.
The Huawei technology (despite supposedly using the Sony sensor) isn't half as good IMO.

Hi can anyone advise me how to get slow motion to record longer than 10 seconds thanks

P30 pro slow mo only 10 secs?

Hello, is it true that you can only record 10 seconds slow motion video? If its true then it sucks. I cant find any settings to change this as i obviously need more time for majority of slow mo's im tryna film. Thanks in advance
The worst part is the autofocus in slowmo 960: sucks

Yeah i noticed that too. Looks like slow mo focuses better with alot of light.
Better say... p30 pro doesn't have slow motion. Every slow motion in p30 pro is very bad.
960fps is software achieved, it's not real 960fps. I think kirin 980 isn t capable for 960fps and 4k 60fps. Not much of a difference with kirin 970 capabilities.
As above, it's not true 960FPS, but in an attempt to make people think it is they still impose the same recording limit that real 960fps phones have...
