What phone to choose ? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

Hi, i would like to ask your opinions?
I can't choose between Honor p20 pro, honor p10 ,xuaomi mix 2s, Samsung galaxy s8+ or xia;omi mi8 .
THX for helping

Nice! First of all never say, what you want!
P20 Pro good, beste camera but EMIUI, locked bootloader, after 5-6 month really bad support (updates) and Kirin (main problem GPU). S8 Plus is old hardware for a lot of money, UI disgusting and if you broke the screen, you need a lot of money Will never buy Samsung/Huawei again.
Mi Mix 2s is a beats, thanks to Snapdragon 845 but like the Mi8 only 3400 mAh. Speaker are not really good, the mic is trash but overall it's good.
Mi8 is good but notch, 6.2 inch (long), maybe just USB 2.0, maybe no stereo speaker, maybe will get trash mic like Mi Mix 2s, no wireless charging and for now roo expensive, outside from China.

Mi A2 vs Mate 10 Lite

Hello. My brother is searching for a new phone, and asked me to post this here. Mi A2 and Mate 10 lite are the same price here. Which one is better for everyday use, speed, screen and camera, and best bang for the buck.
Xiaomi Mi A2 all the way. Better rear cameras, better front camera, better software and support, better SoC, USB Type ... I can not see any of Mate 10 lite advantages except bit larger battery, but it depends of software and soc if is any better and 3.5mm jack.
I used to have the mate 10 lite, it's great overall but for the same price Xiaomi is way better (regardless of the ****ty customer support)
I love every aspect of xiaomi mi a2,and was going to buy it but i heard about the goodix fingerprint issue. Do you know if it still exists, and how many phones have this sensor. Im from Bosnia and i dont know whether it will be fixed soon.
Go for Mi A2, this is not even a comparable, mate 10 lite could be compared to Mi A2 lite.
Are there any other probems with this phone besides the fingerprint issue?

Help me pick, Mi 8 vs Mix 2s vs OP6 vs Mi MIX 3

What to pick, i need info from most up to date sofrwate features, performance updates, and development of this 3 phones, i do not care for launch status of this phones.
Example, the Mi8 had trash video at launch, now it is much better, but i dont know how do they compare with most current updates/software.
What is most important to me,
Display
Speed/touch/responsiveness
Video camera
Price
Speakers (stereo mod available without root maybe?
Gcam best support and easy install
Price
Please help me pick, i would get the Mix 3 only if its noticable better, its quite out of my budget sadly, thanks.
P.S. I've heard of terrible ghosting/jello on the Mix 2s, was it fixed with updates? if it was i would buy it in a heartbeat, such a stunning design, its unreal!
Tbh they're all so similarly spec'd and well built so just get the one that saves you the more money.
I would like to say that it's your preference. I will list the downside of each device :
- The Mi Mix 2s is the one with the worst front cam (only 5mpx) and with an IPS display (I prefer AMOLED but IPS is cheaper to replace). Widevine L3. If the Pocophone gets a Widevine L1, expect an update.
- The Mi Mix 3 is a piece of art, yes. But I'm worried about dust that accumulates between the screen and the "mother bloc". And also if it falls... I think it will break right the first time. Widevine L3. If the Pocophone gets a Widevine L1, expect an update.
- For the OP6 : A bit more expensive than the Mi8 but for me, it was really important. Also, no telephoto lens, speakers aren't great. I prefer the microphone recording of the Mi8, OxygenOS, Widevine L1 with a locked bootloader, but with an unlocked bootloader, it goes to L3. Not really scratchproof on the back.
- At last but not least, the Mi8 : Large notch, no headphone jack (not a big deal I think), Widevine L3. If the Pocophone gets a Widevine L1, expect an update.
Honestly I would just buy poco phone.
- better value / price VS any of the phones mentioned
- huge battery
- it has loud speakers (like at full volume it can get kinda uncomfortable from up close)
- great support here on xda, very easy to ul install gcam with excellent results (similar with mi8 in most situations).
Only downside is the screen (it is not that bad but not as vivid as an Amoled and need to be kept at high brightness).
Buy mi 8 if amoled is a must for you.

I think it will cost the same as the MI mix 3 (if not higher) since it will be powered by a Sony 48mpx cam, an in display fingerprint scanner (you have just to check how high Mi8 pro price is compared to the classic Mi8), and of course the awaited Snapdragon 855
Rommco05 said:
Mi9 isn't Mi8 Pro. Mi9 Pro will be also more expensive, Mi9 "must" have "normal" price
edit: Mi9 will cost more than Mi8 coz Sony and SD855

I know, but the fact that the Mi9 will have a in-display fingerprint scanner will increase the price. Also, I think the Mi9 pro will be the 5G variant. But it's just hypothesis

Should I buy it?

I can decide buying the S10 (normal one) or the Huawei P30 Pro.
What are your experiences with the phone so far?
Would you buy it again or should I go for the P30 Pro?
Hey mate. I was also struggling about Huawei P30 Pro. I have a S10 exynos, and my main problems with it are: battery, and camera. I was thinking a lot about exchanging my phone for P30 Pro, because of that camera and battery. But I made small research about P30 Pro, and... it's not a perfect phone. There is no perfect phone.
Check out forum about P30 Pro on XDA, and there are people complaining about different things of Huawei.
Those two last post from leoni1980 and Ady1976 kinda opened my eyes. They made really good points.
link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/hu...ra-samples-t3916240/post79424402#post79424402
I think I'll stick to my S10, and I hope Samsung will improve night mode and the new charging speed will make the experience with Samsung better.
What are my favourite things about S10? First of all, the screen. It's great, the highest resolution is nice, but my top feaute is the reduction of blue light. Even youtubers are starting to inform about blue light and what harm can it do. Also the stereo speakers are really nice. I enjoy using OneUI with gestures and onehand+ app. No buttons on my screen, but also no one besides me know how to operate my phone Inscreen fingerprint is not perfect, but i like its position and that it can be used with wet fingers. Though my isn't always working. Huawei's interface isn't that nice from what I read.
Overall, it's a good phone, but not perfect. On some aspects Samsung didn't do their best, especially with the whole Exynos vs Snapdragon topic. And I think I'll stick with my S10, instead of trying to change it for P30 Pro.

Do not know about the P30 but I have had my S10 Snapdragon for about a month and a half. I also have the Pixel 2...
Love the S10 ..the Pixel 3a is due out anytime now and the 4 is due out in October and both will have a better camera vs the S10.
It really depends on what is important to you?
Camera? Always having the most updated software? UI ? Cost?
Do you use the Gear S3 watch? Etc, etc...
Sammy offers a nice trade in deal if you have the current S8 or S9 as well.

Redmi K20 Pro Or Oneplus 7 ?

Hi everyone,
I want to buy a smartphone - but stuck between Op 7 or K20 pro ? Can't make my mind - which one should I buy ?
Any suggestion/ advice will be highly appreciated.
They are pretty similar. Run on the same platform, CPU, GPU. Both AMOLED, same resolution.
The K20pro / 9Tpro has an audio jack, OP7 does not.
OP7 has stereo speakers, K20p/9Tp does not.
The K20pro / 9Tpro has FM radio, OP7 does not.
I believe the OP7 has OIS on the main camera, K20pro/9Tpro does not.
The OP7 has a (small) notch in the screen. The K20pro/9Tpro has a popup front facing camera.
K20pro/9Tpro has a somewhat bigger battery.
For me personally, the popup cam is not a problem because I don't use face-unlock or take selfies, and having a full notch-less display is very nice.
I imagine that if you're the kind of person that uses the front facing camera a lot, the popup camera becomes annoying pretty fast. (but I don't know because I'm not that person)
FM radio is a feature I really like to have, but I'm probably alone in that one.

Thanks mate for your detailed comparison .
I don't use face-unlock and selfies like you. So it 'll not be any issue for me. Though I don't like Pop-Up camera. But I really like stereo speakers.
BTW, how's the battery life of K20 pro ?
OP7 has almost no development - unlike the K 20 Pro.
But I really don't like the bootloader unlocking procedure of Xiaomi. It's really annoying (really)to me.
Would you throw some lights on the multi-media experiences of K20 Pro - 3.5 mm audio quality, watching video/movie experience etc.? Really it's very important to me.
Which one would be better for multi-media between these two ?
Thank you once again for your reply.
K20 Pro has a HiFi DAC built-in. It's 24 bits / 192 KHz.
So it has the ability to play High Definition audio.
You don't really need to unlock the bootloader unless you really need root for something or actually want to change ROMs.
I used the Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot tool to disable apps that I don't use. MIUI isn't that bad, for now at least.
I was confused about that last few days, finally bought k20 pro, for 3.5 mm audio jack and price difference. audio, movies and camera are great.

I am probably not the best judge. I don't have an OP7, have only used this device (European 9Tpro) for under 2 weeks now and my previous phone was almost 5 years old. To me, watching video on the notch-less OLED and listening through simple wired earphones is very good.
Battery life is good. In normal day to day use when I'm not traveling, I can charge it every 2 days. In heavy use it will still last a full day easy. I have everything on all the time (wifi, sync, location, bluetooth, ambient display).
I plan to keep mine stock and locked for at least the first month, but yes from what I read on these forums, unlocking and flashing is more cumbersome and has more pitfalls than I'm used to from HTC devices.
My previous phone was OP7.
k20pro 256gb + 27watt charger costs less than Op7. So price wise this is a win.
Face unlock is a breeze in Op7. Miss that comfort on k20 pro. Though always on fingerprint is good & serves the purpose.
4000 mah battery & miui battery management works wonders. Always end up with 30+ at the end of the day. On Op7, it would be about less than 20% by the end of the day.
Oxygen os is really clean. But it lacks serious customisation. Miui is eyecandy & won't get boring. This is probably the only factor for me to switch from op7.
Also, since op7 was just a minor upgrade from 6T, better to wait for Op7t (with 90hz).
But beware of your purchase now, the price of K20PRO will see drop Faster than op7 in very short period of time. (Already price cut of Rs 2000 announced in India (flipkart))
U should also check the asus rog 2 if u are not bothered by large bezels

Really appreciate .
Totally agree with you - OP7 is a minor upgrade from 6T. And Miui is eyecandy and has more customisations.
BTW, the same question I want to ask you - Are satisfied by switching from OP7 to Redmi K20 Pro ?

Thanks for sharing the most important feature - audio quality of K20 Pro.
What's your feedback about the headphone audio quality of K20 Pro?
Is it really awesome or average ?
I like to use rooted device. And that's why I don't like Xiaomi for their bootloader unlocking policy.
Appreciate your ADB/Fastboot procedure for deblauting.
BTW, I had some bad experiences with RN7 Pro - MTP incompatibility. My Windows PC can't recognized RN7 Pro and can't install the drivers. And finally I'd to sale RN7 Pro due to this issue. Is there any MTP/ Driver issue with K20 Pro ?
:good:
if op7 has no notch i would have gotten it to try this oxygen os ,coming from pocophone which is mine spare phone now ,glad i dont to face with a notch all day , to me op7 just look like a 6t , by the way i have no issue connecting mine pc (win 7) to k20 pro
Yes, i really am enjoying the k20 pro. Yesterday, the android 10 OTA was received. So that also is covered.
And miui 11 is on the way by end of the year.
Btw, if u are looking for Op7T for the 90hz display, K20PRO can also reach around 80hz thru mods. Both are 1080 oled panels.
On a related note, asus rog 2 has got some Insane specs for a sweet price (128/8 ) Rs 38k.
K20pro is going to be sold for less then 24999 during the sale season... That's a huge price drop for such a new device and it's cheating for those who bought this device from the start.....

Nope Max drop will be ₹3500 if you are taking into account the initial ₹2000 into account. Even in current sale a minimum card discount is going to be there for atleast ₹1500. As a loyalist I feel that companies should atleast hold onto their prices for 6 months man. If you ever want to resell your device within this timefram now you will face a huge challenge trying to resell. Not that I would be doing that. Its about percieved difference of going from Base bottom Budget Brand to a Premium Brand... They went back to being a budget only Brand with this move. Thats really Bad. I would gladly buy their Premium range of Phones of the Mi Series(I owned a MI3 and Mi5) But they don't release them here in India anymore..
If a Brand wants to induce a loyalty in its customer base they should be prepared to be loyal in return. This doesnt feel like loyalty..

Is this phone worth it for 340€?

Do people still like the phone, even though you cannot unlock the BL anymore and thus no more root, custom roms and tweaks?
Is it worth for 340€? I bought one on sale online, and now I am pondering whether I should send it back or not.
Many people opt for Xiaomi Mi 9 / Mi 9T Pro in these price regions, but to be honest, I also tried that one. But regarding photo shooting and video recording and sound it is not on the P20 Pro level.
Good battery, excellent photos and Emui, you'll get used to it...
Wait until March to get Android 10.
For that price it's a very good all-round phone.
People go for xiaomi due to custom roms. P20 pro is a great device, especially at that price!

Well, you gotta unlock your BL there, in which case you lose your guarantee. But well, it is an huge argument favoring the Xiaomi. I don't think it is so important for my mother to frickle around the software.
Mi 9 has very bad low light performance compared to the P20 Pro. I have the P20 Pro for 2 years now and I have no intention of switching. The fingerprint sensor under the screen is such a good idea to navigate through the OS that I honestly felt it's abscence during a brief period of using the S9 plus and Mate 20 Pro. For video it can be very good but only if you use an app with manual video settings like Open Camera.

Choose S9+, p20 pro is not as good as what we can read on internet or YouTube.
Personally I switched from an S8+ to Redmi K20, I was happy ( Redmi camera is not as good ass S8+) and today I changed my k20 with a P20 Pro, the phone is good but not at the same level than S9+ of my friend I think ( camera also is better on S9+)
Honestly, I regret it.
what the best rom for this phone ? without emui

Camera is better on s9+? lmao
The only advantage that s9 plus has is the edge screen, wireless charging, headphone jack, the amoled screen is a better quality but not such a big difference and pretty much it.
Battery, camera and performance wise, p20 pro mops the floor with the s9 plus (unless it uses the snapdragon chipset then they are toe-to-toe)

I'm test the p20 pro and writing you from IT. I can compare it to my old S8+.
Battery losts 10% in 40min, it's really bad compared to 1h30 on S8+ ( A little less on the S9+) accu battery detects a healthy battery.
P20 pro camera is a little bit sharper but my old S8+ is way better with colors, high dynamics range (Especially this point), autofocus. Vidéo, microphone, screen are much better on S9.
OneUi is light years ahead Emui 9.1 and I'm impatient for Emui 10 ?

Who isn't. Still, i like the p20 pro, not a huge fan of the edge screen that the s9 plus has. Anyway, if the android solution doesn't solve up with the trade war thing, i am porting to another device. Big shame that Huawei gets the bat when they make pretty good phones and keep the competition high
There is no way to get the S9 Plus for 340€ new....
S9+ with Exynos processor does not last a whole day. It's honestly really bad at battery life and also full of bloatware. It does, however, have a great video mode with very smooth zoom compared to the jagged zoom on the P20. Photos seem better on the P20 Pro though.

Don't have s9+ but s8+ exynos has good battery life.
And it was just a software issue yesterday on my p20 pro, now I'm at
80% with 2h45 on screen, it's even better then my Xiaomi MI 9t ?
S9 recived software updates for camera and I compared it with my p20p.
Between flagship the camera quality is very close, the size of the camera's sensor in the smartphones not have much margin to have a huge difference ?
