Carstream (aka YouTube auto) working with update phone w/root - Android Auto General

Up until recently google had blocked car stream via updates to Android auto and play services. The only way to keep car stream working was to keep those two apps rolled back to certain versions and not take updates. Problem is play services auto updates regardless of settings for such, and will randomly disable YouTube auto until roll back again.
Well thekirankumar updated carstream to version 2.0.0 and with it brought instructions to bypass these blocks. You can find it here at his github. The instructions were a little complicated for your average user and even then contained some uneeded steps. So I'm going to summarize....
Update play services and Android auto (woo!).
Install carstream (Android auto) from the github link above.
Then follow his guide step 1-8, I'll qoute...
"1. Start Android Auto on your phone (the phone is not attached to anything at this time)
2. Click on the menu on the top left (three bars)
3. Click "About"
The following steps may already be done. I am including them for reference for newbies.
4. If developer mode is not enabled, click on the bar "About Android Auto" 10 times.
5. Click on the three dot menu (on the top right)
6. Click on "Developer settings"
7. Click on Application Mode and set to "Developer". Also go to the bottom of the developers settings and make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked.
8. Click back, and then go to the three dot menu. Click "Start head unit server"."
Now connect the phone to your car and accept any permissions it may ask you for.
Disconnect the phone, click stop on the head unit server from your notification bar.
Then follow his steps 20-23, I'll qoute...
"20. Now, go to your apps, and start Carstream
21. Click on "Unlock[Root]" and grant Root access when prompted (screenshot below)
22. Reboot the phone
23.Once the phone reboots, connect the phone to your car, and start Android Auto. Go to the speedometer thing (on the lower right side of the screen) and see if Carstream is listed. If it is, give thanks below. If it isn't, I don't know what to tell you."
All done

While watching the video, go full screen. When full screen, tap on the video and a little box on the right side will pop up that say either "fil, contain, or fit" I think. Tap on the box to cycle through viewing options

Superb...work fantastic with me.

It's an error on clicking Unlock [Root] in Carstream. I granted Root permissions at the prompt. Still it's a permission denied error.

Make sure you have busybox. Though This message usually occurs when the apps aren't updated (either Android auto or play services). Reboot and try again.

It Depends. If your bootloader is already unlocked, you won't loose anything by rooting. If your bootloader is locked then unlocking it (to allow root) will erase everything.

[Q] How to disable popup warning AFTER charging?

Hi,
I recently got a wireless charging receiver for the phone and now I get this annoying popup which says to close the micro usb properly to prevent water damage.
This happens also sometimes during charging in the middle of the night.
Can anyone tell me how to disable the popup? To make it clearer, it is not the flashing text that appears when the phone is connected to the charger. ( this can be disabled via xposed module)
The one I am talking about is more like a text with a white background picture.
"for protection against water damage firmly seal the charging cover before use"
Anyone else with the "problem" ?
I am on NEE-I9295XXUBMK2.
Thanks for the help in advance.

this also happens when I disconnect the device from USB.

I second that!
I have found battery_cover_notice.xml in systemui\res\layout
There is an battery_cover_notice_image and an battery_cover_notice_message
The Pic is help_img_usb.png in folder systemui\res\drawable-hdpi
Now you can try and delete the battery_cover_notice.xml from the SystemUI

I tried and it worked ( at least the popup doesn't appear anymore) but I do not have a notification area at the top anymore. No clock, Signal or anything.
Perhaps it's because of the odex file? Didn't touch that.
I will try it again. Might be, I did something wrong.....
Thanks
okay thanks for feedback...
I will investigate this....
So is there no non-root way of disabling this?

I am.
No solution found so far.
Only I remember - that started after OTA update from Samsung in later 2013.
On original software I didn't have such warning.
Before and after is 4.2.2 Android, I didn't notice any changes, so I am lookiing for old firmware to download...
p.s. I also have wireless charger from "indiegogo"

Cloud it be that this notice is a toast with a custom theme? You could check it with my app EnhancedToast, and hide it if it is a toast. Enable logging in the app and watch it.And yes, root is required for Xposed. Btw, the Google edition don't show it at all

^Mostly what I was going to say, so thanks.
You should check EnhancedToast if you can, and you could always switch ROM's - I'm loving the CM 10.2 ROM, which doesn't have the warning, and offers a lot of other advantages. If a notification comes up in the bar, long-press it and see if comes up with the "app info" button - it could be run through some sort of stock app that you could disable or uninstall altogether.

Any good source to learn more of ROMs? What do I lose if I dump the original, what do I get with some other ROM?
How should I backup? Meaning there's lot's of data:
- contacts and messaging and that stuff
- pictures, music, videos etc
- OS (?)
- ROM
- Apps (downloaded and system)
Maybe someone could explain the best practice to backup ROM,OS and apps.
Thanks in advance, Kaptah.

What method of rooting your phone did you use? They are not the same thing, but it is possible to do them both at the one time. If everything looks different, then yes, you would have changed your ROM while rooting.

This problem appeared/reappeared when i upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.3 (ML2)
After rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690133 )
and disabling KNOXagent it still gives this warning, which it did not do after the 4.2.2 Active Root.
This is merely an annoyance but if someone figures out a quick way to disable it that would be grand.
i have this issue too. cant wait for a fix for this. just updated to 4.3 a few days ago and having to tap the bubble everytime is just annoying. why the hell would they add these rediculous notifications? its not like att or samsung will stand behind the "waterproof" claim anyway..... water damage weather the door is open or closed means your screwed no matter what.
I've personally tried using the "EnhancedToast" module for xposed and the prompts do not register as toast events. It has to be something else.

Runkeeper and other running apps are closing

Hi there,
My OP is working fine since the update to 4.02 except for 1 thing. The apps I use for recording my running workouts are closing after a while. I have tried different apps (runkeeper, polar beat, Strava) but they are all having the same problem. After a while (not always the same time) they close. All my battery save options are disabled. I tried to lock it in the recents screen.
On 3.x.x roms there was no problem and yes I did a factory reset after the update, my phone is stock no root etc....
I'm thinking about going back to 3.x.x rom if there is no solution for this

Ok.. Thnx.... Haven't tried that... Try it by next workout...but what does it exactly do? Do I've to enable the function? Now I switched it on put the apps in the upper section "allow apps to start automaticly" (translate that because it's in dutch on my phone) and then disabled the function. Is that ok or do I have to leave it on?

Has anyone here used the app CarStream to watch Youtube?

I have wanted to move from my regular android head unit to Android Auto for a while, but some of my favorite things to listen to while driving to work don't have regular podcasts. So I have to watch them on YouTube. If anyone has used this, please let me know if it is working well. I really want to get a higher quality head unit, and this would definitely motivate me to do it. Here is a link to a video example of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9AjJW0H93Y

Yes it is working perfectly fine. I've just recently started using it. It also has inbuilt internet browser and u can also watch videos from your device's internal or sd storage. But i prefer using AnyAutoAudio app while driving because its much safer as it plays youtube on the background n u dont get distracted by the video too

You can downgrade the Google Play Service to 12.21.
It works. And also using Android Auto v2.95
But I choose mirroring app Android Auto over the carstream.

If you have no root, then you have to re-install the GPS every time its update.
If not, then you won't get the app working.
If you're rooted user, then you can use the lucky patcher in my case and searching for update in GPS and then disable the package.
In my case, I used the following step below based on my experienced:
1. Open LuckyPatcher
2. Tap search box
3. Search for Google Play Services
4. Tap the Google Play Services
5. Choose Menu of Patches then click Yes.
6. Choose change the app components
7. Tap the disable components 'pm disable' method in the first row
8. Then search for update and you can disable:
com.google.android .gms.update.SystemUpdateActivity (in tab Activities)
com.google.android.location.internal.NlpNetworkProviderSettingUpdateReceiver (In tab receiver)
com.google.android.lgms.update.SystemUpdateService
9. Just enjoy it! :good::good:
Already using this for months and no auto update for Google Play Services. But I'm using GPS 12.6.85 with the AA mirror and Android Auto 3.2.58 on rooted devices. And I'm not using the carstream again but using AA mirror and I can play youtube or even all of the apps on my phone in the head unit. FYI the carstream won't work in my version. I haven't tried it though.
Always Have a full functional Backup. Just in case!

Google Cast & "Coolwalk"

After seeing the articles about the new files being in the latest beta version I took a dive in and looked to see how to enable it. Here's some basic steps for that.
1. You will need to be rooted and on the latest beta. "7.3.120244-release.daily"2. Download a database editor, I used SQLite Editor.3. Open SQLite and under "apps" section navigate to Google Play Services and open it.4. Scroll down to phenotype.db and select it.5. Look for "flags" and open it.6. On the top select "set filter" input Coolwalk__enabled.7. change all bootVal from 0 to 1.8. Now search for cakewalk and do the same.9. Lastly search for MirrorApp__enabled and change those.
Now just restart your phone and connect to Android auto. You will need to enable coolwalk on the head unit settings. To switch from full screen and condensed press and hold the new UI home button. I need another phone to show off cast, but it does work. You just can't do Netflix/Hulu what not. You also need to be in park. I haven't found what to change to eliminate that. Anyone else wants to help give it a shot.
UPDATE: if you have sqlite3 installed with magisk you can also create a trigger like so in termux.
Code:
Su
Sqlite3
.open /data/data/com.google.android.gms/databases/phenotype.db
CREATE TRIGGER after_update
AFTER UPDATE ON Flags
BEGIN
UPDATE Flags SET boolVal=1 WHERE name='Coolwalk__enabled';UPDATE Flags SET boolVal=1 WHERE name='MirrorApp__enabled';UPDATE Flags SET boolVal=1 WHERE name LIKE 'Coolwalk__%' AND boolVal=0;
END;
