Mi 8 GPS inaccuracy - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

I just buy xiaomi mi 8 a week ago only for dual GPS signals. But it's accuracy stuck at 16. Even update to miui 10. Any one have better accuracy for mi 8?

i got it below 8 but it didnt last long. its normally at 16. My oneplus 3 was next to it with a 4m while the mi 8 had 16m accuracy. Hopefully its just a bug and will get fixed

Seeing the same thing here. Hoping a future firmware update improves things.

Broadcom always sucks, their GNSS solution from the Global Locate is far from accurary compared to the Qualcomm Atheros solution, even on some older widely used and more stable BCM47531 chips,i can always get just 5-6m accruracy

Try xiaomi.eu miui

Gpstest

on MIUI 10.8.26 Beta In Germany.
After Screenshot it went down to 4m Accuracy.

Got an update the other day to MIUI 9.5.11.0 and since then, i get 4m accuracy according to "GPS Status" & "GPSTest" indoors.

Guys, I am running the EU ROM (MIUI 10)and my accuracy is 2m during driving, average 28 satelites. On chinish ROM I had only 16m accurcy.

I get the lowest is 1.3~2, but average is 4.

Try switch to GPS only, I.e. without WLAN and Bluetooth assist. I generally get consistent 4m accuracy and sometimes down to 2m.

Just arrive my brand new phone and in spain with the global rom inside a building near a window it has 16 m accuracy and a SNR of 21 aprox.
With and without wifi or bluetooth or anything. Lets hope it gets fixed. : _ (

I bought this phone because of it's theoretical good dual GPS but I'm really disappointed.

Some quick tests with raw measurements data with Global Beta 8.8.21 give me some hope. BTW: Don't believe the accuracy display! What counts only is multiple testing against known points.

That real GPS (not estimated) accuracy and reliability becomes better. Why? Because raw measurement testing with 8.8.21 gives far better results than 8.8.7 especially with pseudorange errors.
if you are interested in GNSS & Android topics:

Please do not trust in accuracy (estimates) which is displayed in any kind of software, just measure it against public well known points.
just my 5 cents: Mi8 is the first Smartphone with L1/L5 capability so developers have lot of work to bring the 30 cm marketing story to real life and software releases may be delayed because of this complex task.

With the latest MIUI update, the "16 meters" accuracy bug has been fixed.

Has anybody tried the "Global optimized GPS File Replacer" Magisk's module?
Would it make any improvement or is that setting already included on MIUI10 or Xiaomi.eu?

Can anyone confirm that? And if possible with a link to the documentation?

Galaxy Note uses Broadcom BCM47511 as GPS chipset
Hello betoNL,
According to a Broadcom press release, the Samsung Galaxy Note uses their BCM47511 chipset, for GPS (American) but also GLONASS (Russian) Global Navigation Satellite System(s) (a.k.a. GNSS, the generic term for GPS-like systems). This chipset, which is a direct pin-to-pin replacement for the earlier BCM4751 chipset, adds support for the Russian GLONASS system, so that either or both GPS & GLONASS can be used according to best available signal strengths. Thus speeding acquisition and improving (slightly) accuracy.
I notice that Broadcom have now starting selling their next-generation GNSS chipset, BCM4752, which adds the Japanese specific Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (a.k.a. QZSS, a regional solution using quasi-geo-synchronous satelites that oscilate North-South between Japan and central Australia), along with GPS & GLONASS. This chipset also advertises that it uses unspecified Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (a.k.a. SBAS, like maritime Differential-GPS but via satelite) - presumably at least WAAS (North American continent) and EGNOS (Europe) would be support, but no mention of implementation details: e.g. is host system software required?
Broadcom suggest that smartphones using this new chipset should start being released in Q4 2012, meaning right now (2 weeks left before Christmas), but I cannot find any examples of that yet. When that happens, the new smartphone concerned would be (due to absence of Sirf Star III/4) the first to have GPS-style location using correction information (A-GPS only pre-loads the basic satelite almanac via Internet, rather than waiting for it to dribble down from the GPS satelites themselves, thus saving time for the first-fix).
This new BCM4752 chipset also advertises reduced power - compared to BCM4751/BCM47511. As well as the possibility of using external sensors (accelerometre, gyro) and other information such triangulated Wifi and/or Bluetooth signals - specifically to improve indoor operations.
Getting back to your specific suggestion that a Sirf Star 4 might be involved: I have not been able to identify any smartphone using this chipset, nor the Sirf Star III which is what is was actually looking for when I came across you still-unanswered post. Apparently some purpose built GPS tablets, running Android but without any telephone capability, do use the Sirf Star III (at least) which already gets correction information via SBAS. But Broadcom & Qualcomm seems to share the smartphone market (Android and iPhone).
Best regards,
Neil D. - Lyon France
Hello Neil,
Thank you very much for your excellent, very informative and complete post.
As you noticed (or not ), I posted my question around one year ago, when I was thinking about buying the GNote and I did buy it!
The gps performance on the GNote is indeed excellent, on all my onboard/offline gps car navigation software.
In the meantime I already moved on to the GNote2, which also got Glonass support and probably got the same gps chipset as his predecessor and a even better gps performance ( locks to satellites a little faster, even indoors , without the need of agps support, of course)
If it's correct, that the GNote2 got the same chip or similar(upgraded) , allow me to quote your excellent post, on the GNote2 forum also.
Best regards and thanks again,
Beto
Edit: If I remember it correctly, there were some very old HTC phone models equipped with a sirfstar chipset, but it seems so long ago...
Can anyone confirm if the note will switch automatically between gps and glonass. Mine always says location set by gps.

Well, I own a note 2 now and Just like the note 1, once I am outdoors, and I open for instance gps status app , I can see sometimes device is viewing 22 or 23 (or maybe more) satellites, much more than any other device I owned before, so I can only conclude that the phone is combining both systems:
GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system, the Russian equivalent to the U.S.’s GPS. GLONASS was initiated during Soviet Union times but had then fallen into disrepair, it has since then been upgraded in various stages and can now begin to rival GPS — GLONASS is actually more accurate than GPS in northern latitudes because of the positioning of its satellites.
The biggest benefits, however, come when you combine both systems together, GLONASS and GPS; this allows a device to get more accurate positioning and/or faster fix, particularly in deep urban environments. This is because you suddenly have access to the US GPS 31 satellites and the Russian GLONASS 24 satellites for a total of 55 active satellites.
Below is a test that was ran showing the improvement in accuracy by using both systems together:

And even if it's not combining both systems, that's not really relevant, cause performance over here, is outstanding, anyways (fix speed and accuracy)....
.
Galaxy note series has one of the best gps chipset available and it is way ahead of its time. No other phone has such a powerful gps.

Perhaps some of the devices do, but not the GT-N7000. I have that model, and when I capture nmea data I see some proprietary messages unique to the Broadcom GPS chips.
Thanks man, but first post is more than 1 year old and it was detailed answered 6 posts above...
I think one key difference between the Broadcom chipsets that isn't mentioned here are the number of tracking channels and corresponding maximum satellites tracked.
The BCM4751, 2076, 4761 only have 12 tracking channels with an equivalent maximum satellites tracked. This is fine for GPS only devices, but quite limited for multi-constellation chipsets.
The BCM47511 up's the tracking channels to 18 with an equivalent max tracked.
The BCM4752 is listed as >100 channels, with a maximum tracked of >35.
Not sure if any devices use the BCM4752. Couldn't find any information from searches.

Is it worth buying Redmi 4x in Q3 2018?

Hello folks. I've been using Moto X Style for about a 1,5 year and I'm tired. Development is slowing down, the phone is really big (my previous one was LG L90). For some time I was looking for a nice, compact smartphone with good battery and decent price. Redmi 4X seems to fit my needs, but is it worth buying now? As far as I know the longer battery is kept unused, the worst condition it has - is 4X still being produced? How about development - how many LOS version may this phone get yet? How is battery life?
Or are there newer models which could fill my needs? 150mm height is too much for me; I like compact smartphones - otherwise I would get Lenovo P2 - that is a beast. Actually I tought that Sony Xperia XA2 would be nice, but that price...
What do you guys think?

Redmi 4x's android version range is 6-8 and thanks to treble we booted android p dev previews. About battery life my SoT records are: RR Luis build nougat 8hr 35min RR Luis build oreo 8h 12min android p dev preview 7h 3min
Project Treble seems promising. I wonder how long Android will keep compatibility with it. How about your opinions, then? Do you like this smartphone? Are you happy with it? Would you buy it again?

My previous phone was zenfone 6 (6 inch display x86 cpu) I was in your situation. It isnt even fit on pocket, lack of development, etc. Redmi 4x seems fine after 6 inch junk. 5 inch display, more custom rom support, Camera is amazing with gcam (miui default cam is fine too), 8 core cpu. Gaming performance is great and also it is cheap. Im definitely happy with redmi 4x

If u want to compact phone, santoni is best choice
Redmi 4X has several ROM's even project treble supported ROM's too.
Custom kernels available too.Development is quite good.
I think xiaomi less likely to make 5inch device in future too because as they are releasing newer devices in the range of 5.5 to 5.9 inches. For e.g. Redmi 6 has 5.5 inch display Maybe they produce 5 inch display phone with tight budget in future e.g. Redmi 4A.
I would say at least go for SD 625 device if there is any 5 inch device.
You've mentioned you might go for Lenovo P2 which has 5.5 inch display considering this Redmi 5 would be fine since it has 5.7 inch display and SD 450 and it's better than SD 435 and has same GPU as SD 625.
If there's any xiaomi store out there near by you live then try out newer xiaomi device yourself to get better decision on which device to get.
SD 435 is based on 28nm technology and now almost all new SD chipsets are based on 14nm or lower so it's better to get this devices.
With using only mobile data on Redmi 4X I do need to charge device in evening or night.
With mix usage it lasts 1½ days which translates roughly around 8 hours of sot. On MIUI 8 I used to get around 10hours of sot.
If you buy Redmi 4X now there's very chance that your phone will have white color notification LED.
Do let us know which one you buy
In the end I bought Redmi 4X since it was quite cheap. It fits nice in my hand. I'm not using it as daily yet, but "play" with it now.
Can you suggest me some nice custom roms (with as little bugs as possible)? Or maybe miui is the way to go (global or xiaomi.eu?). I just wish I could deactivate fingerprint scanner (I don't use it, but touching it with finger accidentaly wakes phone) and remove/disable some google apps. I heard root on miui is available on xiaomi.eu version.
First(I am sure you know it) get device's bootloader unlocked, it a quiet hectic process and will take few days.
The custom ROM's I'll recommend you are list below.
I have personally tried all of them and they are pretty good almost bugless, with good battery backup.
I haven't tried any custom kernel so can't say anything about them. If you wish you can try.
All of them are Oreo based.
1. Resurrection Remix OS.
2. DOT OS.
3. Nitrogen OS.
4. Havoc OS.
I recommend the new Xaiomi Mi A2 lite. It´s very handy too.
Watch this video from minute 6 on.

Any drawabacks on RR? I heard battery does not last as long on custom as on miui. How about camera and flashlight gestures? Can I set double click on power/volume button to trigger them? Or long click?
sorry doublepost
Of course no. Sd 435 is too old for q3 2k18. I think the minimum soc right now is sd636 (redmi note 5, and other phone with that soc). Iam currently using redmi 4x, but I'll trade this phone to a newer xiaomi (I dont have a lot of money, so i'll choose xiaomi)

I didn't faced any bugs since my usage was using social media apps, some photo editing apps, calls, camera (gcam) and playing PUBG mobile and clash royale.
I noticed the battery drain faster while playing pubgm in rr than miui so yes it does eat more battery when comparing it to miui. Using custom kernel you may get good battery life.
When using it on 4G LTE the battery was draining fast too and experienced device to go warm.
Yes, you can set camera button as far as I remember.
The last time i used rr was in last two weeks of April and early few days of May.
Last build was released in April and later there's no update made available yet.
I think we'll be looking at directly Android P based rr in next update.
To get latest security patch and Android P experience I moved to DOT OS and it's a good build and it also has all the customization that are available in rr and so does the havoc OS.
In my opinion all custom ROM's doesn't have battery backup like MIUI but it's not bad it's decent.
Flashlight gesture I don't know I didn't tried that but it should be available there.
Currently I am using MIUI 10 Global beta and battery backup is good I get SOT around 8 hours with mix usage but again when using 4G LTE it drops down to 4 or 5 hours of SOT.
Battery saver helps a little bit so it's turned on all the time.

10+ hours of SOT is just fantastic.
I(or rather we) used to had such SOT on MIUI 8.

Does firmware version matter?

Crappy max performance?

Ok, I have noticed through a lot of reviews that the snapdragon 660 doesnt perform really well in Mi A2. While other 660 phones score ~5800 points in geekbench multi-core test, Mi A2 only scores ~4600 points. Even RN5 with 636 scores ~4900 points. Of course this isn't the only benchmark where Mi A2 falls behind competitors with snapdragon 660s.
Currently I cant choose whether I should buy RN5 or Mi A2 (35euros more expensive). A2 has better camera and slightly better screen and usb C but much worse battery life and of course its more expensive.
Has anyone looked into this as why the 660 in A2 is underperforming like this?
Maybe some forum members could run the benchmark and post their results?
Don't know why, but I see that it underperforms even compared to MIUI (6X) version of the same hardware.
Comparison here:
yes, I also have a low benchmark performance, 4700 maximum in multicore

Hmm, it seems like the 6x took ~30s to render the video but A2 took around ~36s.
Also I took at look at this https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-Mi-6X-Mi-A2-Smartphone-Review.315456.0.html The Mi 6X seems to be getting the same numbers as nokia 7 plus as it should be. Did Xiaomi **** up A2 or something?
I think that kernel sources should be looked at and check what's different and then recompile the kernel with 6X changes to see if that was the problem. I don't have time to do that now, but I have taken a quick look and I've seen some strange things regarding charging voltages (nothing alarming) as well as some accumulated bloat folders within the kernel simply due to the fact that A2 had a newer base for the fork. This all should be looked at. If no one does it by December/January, I'll give it a go then when a couple of personal things clear up.
There is specially something weird with the read/write speed on the Mia2 which I didn't heard from the mi6x (seems software related) this makes the Mia2 very slow as soon as it has to R/W lots of files. That would be a great explanation why some data heavy games takes ages on our devices

Mi A2 has storage encryption enabled out of the box. Does anyone know if that is enabled by default on the 6X? If not, that would explain such a large difference in R/W speeds and even in performance to some extent...

Well not in real life, but you surely will in synthetic benchmarks.
But I have to agree with you because I've run even my Nexus 5 the same way and was quite fine with the performance I got out of it.

General Lets appreciate the enhanced MIUI

The latest two betas of Xiaomi.eu based on Chinese MIUI enhanced version has remarkable stability, much better battery life- for first time since I got this phone, once only charge to 90% keeps the phone rocking for the whole day even with extensive and heavy use. These betas are almost totally bug-free for Mi 11 ultra.
Many threads here in this forum are filled with scary stories... including a few of my own like those of others. Wanted to give a clearer idea to potential new buyers of this phone.
How are these compared to the latest stable? Because I'm having some issues on it I didn't have on global stable
I'm currently on Xiaomi.eu 21.8.26 but I haven't noticed the performance and battery life improvements so far - is there a way to check if the new features of MIUI Enhanced are definitely enabled under any of the settings?

I am on the same beta and have noticed the improved MIUI very clearly. Despite my maximum and heavy use, I cannot drain the juice of the phone to under 10% in a day. For similar use, I had to charge the phone twice previously when I was using the official global and chinese MIUI.
And also the UI is butter smooth as well. There are no jitters at all.
There is no way to know from inside the firmware that whether you are running the enhanced MIUI. I noticed the improvements on 21.8.18 first and then searched the Xiaomi.eu forums. There, the devs confirmed to a question by a user that this beta (21.8.18) is based on enhanced version of MIUI.

I've installed the latest weekly from Xiaomi EU yesterday and I must say that is working extremely well,it still lacks on performance slightly on cold app start despite official global (I would be curious to try the official chinese weekly it must be a sky rocket). I confirm so far that many bugs have been resolved like stuttering when the rear display is on, whatsapp backup restore doesn't crash anymore, cpu temp looks cooler now and 120hz are really smooth. Great job. I'm really looking forward to see if enhanced version coming official on global devices will be as great
Glad to know it worked for you like it is doing for me. I launch apps via their shortcuts created with a free app from google play (I just cant stand the app icon labels. Creating shortcuts achieve label-less icons). The apps start instantly this way. So I may have overlooked the app start up time when launched from actual app icon.
The Today's beta include the September security patch. That is a hot hot cake for me .
I will greatly appreciate if the official stable MIUI with the enhanced features drop quickly. Nevertheless, we have at least some pathway for the time being to be able to use the phone with all its full potential without major bugs. This is the way for Xiaomi to walk on. Fix the vital software!!
May I ask what's the name of the app for launching the apps? It sounds weird to me but it is worth a try. Also I would add that fingerprint scanner is kuch faster now as well. Great

Best miui 13 port for redmi k20 pro ?

Im still running miui 10 and beside sensor issues in the worst moments and batteryperformance decreased (8-10h sot), im pretty happy.
The release of miui 14 looks pretty interesting, same like miui 13. Unluckily xiaomi will never bring any of those and therefore might xiaomi.eu never aswell.
Meanwhile is there any miui13 port which is super stable and perfectly working (i heart of ghost, miui tn, aphixrog). Im looking for something to flash, forget and never regret (for the next full year).
How is the battery performance ?
I would prefer stock vendor & kernal, no custom "magic" from few days experience dev .
Or should i forget about the "upgrade", stay on miui10 and investigate the drain issues ?
I've tried Abhix.
Thread '[Q] Has anyone tried miui custom roms MIUI SR or AbhiX ROG Edition (both are ports of MIUI 13 on Android 12)' https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...h-are-ports-of-miui-13-on-android-12.4530039/
How is it possible that you have 8-10h SOT in 2+-year old phone? 5h SOT is pretty good, 6 is very good.

Depends on the usage, but everything on my phone is adjusted to consume as less as possible (but i havent done wild stuff like lower clockspeed, kernal, voltage... only debloat, disabled everything which could be battery intensive in settings, using leandroid + greenify), meanwhile i range between 7-9 hours i guess, when i fresh installed it i ranged between 8-11 hours.
My battery should still have efficiency around 85-90%, im trying to hold battery between 15-85%.
To answer your question. I personally think everything after miui 10 is bad.
I may gonna try MiuiTN, according telegram groups that seem to be the best miui 13 port.

8-11h SOT? Picrel or didin't happen.
Which version are you going to test (https://miuitn.vercel.app/Rom_MiuiTN/Raphael/) and is there any info how to install (recovery version, filesystem, etc.)? And the most important - how safe is this?

I dont have specific plans so far, because i didnt got enough time, maybe in christmas vacation.
Probably 1.8 and i read once that you need a specific recovery (unluckily cant tell you which).

I checked miuitn 13 A12 but it doesn't have all languages (there is English and a few Asian ones only). Android security updates are from June, while RaphaelOS (also Miui 13 - 22.8.25, A12) are from August 1st. In general, I have the impression that all these roms are very similar. On stock kernel geekbench is 690 and 2675. On Steroid is 700 and 2747. But AbhiX feels more snappy.
Both roms (AbhiX as well) are without encription so you need standard recovery (I have latest official OrangeFox).

If there is a workaround to get native language in apps for me personally its not a big problem if i got english in os.
I havent tested a single miui 13 port so far, so i cant bring useful informations to this conversation unluckily.
According telegram groups MiuiTN seem to be the most stable, balanced rom and others are "kanged", but well yeah people talk on telegram...
I unluckily wont have time to test all of them myself so i might follow your experience ;D and maybe some other guys come along this thread and share their experience aswell.
Worst case i stay another year on miui 10 and get Rog Phone 6 after... Im just hell of annoyed my sensors do not work how they should on miui10 sometimes.

About Rog Phone 6 - it bends -
About native language - you can try https://github.com/BlueCat300/XposedAppSettings/releases
Dont go for RaphaelOs.
Better go for Miui12 or MiuiTn.
Im on VoltageOs 2.1 which is awesome, i heard also good stuff from Los20.

BTW I'm using Evolution X with stock settings at 72Hz with no battery saving tweaks. I bought the phone more than 3 years ago and use it daily. Afraid to replace this beast because I'm so used to this good SOT.

I easily reach 10 hours sot + on voltageOS. I shared some screenshots of 11-12 hours sot on my 3 year old battery in telegram group with light-medium usage. My idle is dope aswell, most of the time lower then 1% (ext4, voltage2.1, bitgapps, magisk delta).
I heard similar good from LOS20, Android 13 seem to be awesome in terms of background managment (im using 100+ apps).

Did you perhaps have a chance to use EvoX as well? If so, how would you say it compares to VoltageOS?
I've heard only good things about VoltageOS. Are there any issues with it, stuff that does not work?

I have used EvoX 2 years back for a while, cant compare it unfortunatly and i wont flash another rom until i buy a new phone probably.
Well unluckily there are a few issues on Vos2.1:
- Udfps unlock sometimes does not work. (there seem to be the same issue on Los20 and according Los20 dev it seem to be a issue with android system)
- nightmode, reading mode, extra dim does not work together with dc dimming after unlock. (according Voltageos dev this is a common issue on most aosp roms)
- from time to time i notice scrolling laggs and rarely in games aswell. (could be related to kernel, but not sure)
- expandable screenshot ?long screenshot? slightly buggy ? (on miui it have been working better)
- on twitter i have noticed some issues like i couldnt go back to overview after reenter app, on discord after editing i have noticed scrolling does not work anymore. (but those issues can be caused by the app / restricted battery setting / android system idk)
Thats all i have noticed so far, more or less (if i have not missed anything). Anyway im very happy and think its a really great rom. The only thing which is bothering me the most is udfps unlock inconsistency and for night mode + dc dimming i am using twilight. (those things have been working better on miui, not gonna lie. )

Thanks for the thorough review, friend!
I might just give it a go one day. I must admit that MiuiTN also looks tempting since I like the classic Miui style, but I can't find much reliable information on that rom.

I have not been using miuitn for a long time, so i unluckily cant tell you more about that. Miui13 ports for sure arent as stable as official releases / xiaomi eu roms.
So it might depends on your personal usage, you might not get around trying it out at your own.
You can also join the telegram group, there you can follow discussions about miuitn releases. People this days most likely use telegram. (which i personally dislike over xda, but what ever.)
