Software Update in the U.S.A - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
Complete noob here and wanted to ask owners of this phone in the U.S as to how they get their software and security updates.. I'm on t-mobile and was wondering if it's as simple as getting these updates OTA or will I have to flash my phone? I have no idea how to go about the latter so if that's the only case then it's settled- I'm getting the next best camera phone (Pixel 2XL) instead
I can't also decide if it's better to get the global L29C variant or if I should go with the canadian LO4C one instead.. I'm not even sure if it'll make much of a difference in regards to my question but wanted to put it out there anyways.
Thanks!

It is being pushed OTA, youll get monthly updates.

I was wondering the same thing because my P20 Pro will be here on Monday. However I got to CLT-09 version. I really hope I don't have to wait forever to get the OTA updates.

So just the security updates? How about the major software updates?

Htc one 4.4

Hello everyone, I have a question and I am no tech guy so please bear with me.
I have the unlocked HTC One 810e, I currently live in the U.S. and my carrier is AT&T, but I didn't buy the device from AT&T, I bought it back when I was in the middle east. Anyway, the current version of android I have is 4.3 and I have been patiently waiting for 4.4 to arrive, I've been reading lots of articles and blogs where people say that their unlocked HTC Ones have received 4.4. I've been checking for updates everyday and I haven't received anything yet. My question is, is there any way to trick my phone (I know that sounds a bit silly) into thinking we're somewhere besides the U.S.? Will that help me get the update?
Also, with the last two software updates (from 4.1), I have received a (I think 1 megabyte) update that said that there was some sort of bug and that was the reason I wasn't able to receive the update sooner, and after I updated the bug situation, I got the software updates immediately. Do you think this is the situation now?

AT&T 4.4 update is due out any day now ...if after it's released you still don't get updated I would consider taking other steps to get to 4.4

I don't think you read my rant thing. My phone is the unlocked version, I didn't buy it from AT&T. But, what do you mean by "other steps to get to 4.4"?

Your service is from AT&T the update will come from AT&T
The other path is unlocking the bootloader, flashing custom recovery and a custom Rom (4.4.2 sense 5.5 )

Will I be able to get Pie on my P20 Pro?

Hello everyone,
I really want a P20 Pro. I'm in the U.S. and would be using the factory unlocked Canadian ( CLT-L04 ) version of the phone via AT&T. It's soo much trouble getting this phone in the States. One of the things I'm most concerned about is getting the Android Pie update. It's supposed to start rolling out on the 10th, and I cannot find a concrete answer if I will be able to get it on my device. Contacted Huawei via facebook and asked and this was their response...
" Regarding your concern about updates; please bear in mind that, all of our updates are rolled out in batches according to the IMEI number and geographical region. If you own an unlock device, it will take a little more time to get updates. When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA."
When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA - That part has me concerned. Since I'll be on AT&T and it's not an officially supported device by AT&T, it sounds to me that I won't be able to get the update.
Anybody else in the U.S. that could help provide some insight on this?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
worst case is that you have to update it manually but that is pretty easy but i have no doubt that they will update every p20 pro to pie BUt it also depends on the carrier so getting a unlocked/unbranded device is a big plus for updates.

Thanks so much for the info! So the listing says this... "Only International items are Factory Unlocked without carrier logo and/or region lock." Without carrier logo I'm assuming means unbranded ( excuse my ignorance, I've never purchased a phone I couldn't just pick up in the store ) . So I should be able to get the Pie update without issue?

Yea seems like it and you can always flash some unbranded firmware tho if needed
Thanks! Sure hope you're right. Just purchased the last one the seller had.
Units sold by carriers in Canada are unlocked and unbranded. Mine is from Koodo/Telus and it's unlocked straight out of the box (it's the law in Canada) and doesn't have any carrier branding or carrier apps.
I think that as long as you are connected to the internet (mobile data or WiFi), you will get the update when a carrier releases it.

That's the concern I have though. I'm not on a carrier ( At&t ) that carries this phone.
Now that I've ordered the phone, I'm having a hard time finding screen protectors and cases for it. Ones I like that is.
I have the same concern. I bought my P20 Pro by an importer, since here in Brazil it is not officially sold. I know the model is from Latin America because it is a CLT-L29 C605. But since I bought it, it just made an update and I'm still with the July update (8.1.0.152) since then.
So I'm in doubt if I'm actually getting the Pie right now on the 10th.
It's unlocked.
I'm loving the device, but it's sad to know that I have a smartphone released this year, last generation and I don't have updates support for it.

Ignorance again as I've never ventured into this territory. Would you mind explaining how, if I don't get the update, to update it manually?

I'm almost 100% sure that once Canadian carriers push the update you'll get it to. Has nothing to do with the carrier your on, updates are IMEI and model related. So if it's say a Telus/Koodo phone, you'll get the update when they push it.
That's been my experience anyways.
Ps. I'm using the same phone on Koodo now.
You should be on firmware .120 correct?

Check it when you get it.
But you'll be fine for updates.
So receiving the updates to the phone varies by the carrier? The carrier is the one that has to push the updates, like T-Mobile...?

Carriers push the updates yes. But say I buy a phone outright from Rogers and I use it on Telus...Rogers will push the updates to the phone, not the carrier I use it on. And I think it happens because the IMEI would originally be in the Rogers database.
This has happened to me several times now.

My phone isnt branded, so I dont know what carrier it is... because I bought it off a tech-store.
And for network, I am from Macedonia and I use VIP-MK sim card, which, as you said VIP wouldnt push the updates because the phone isnt from there, I don't know from where they're getting the phones to their warehouses, haha.
I just got a new update tho, b159, hopefully I will get the newest update after I install this one. ^^

Possible that if it's unbranded and belongs to no carrier that you'd receive the updates from Huawei servers?

I dont think so.
Because there are a lot of updates for my phone to firmware finder, which I think they're from Huawei's servers, right?
And since I boight my phone like a month ago, this is my first update. I was kinda stuck at 152 with July's security patches, and a while ago I received 159 with October's security patches. All I want to say by this is that if I'd receive the updates from Huawei, I'd have now the newest security patches, which is 161 version I think.
Who knows...that's just my opinion.

Question on updates

Just ordered the International 6GB version this morning and I had a question about updates.
I've read that different versions can get their updates at different times., and that sometimes a particular version might be well behind the others. I'm wondering if I should flash the U.S. firmware when I get the phone or if it's better to leave it with the one it comes with.
I'm on Straight Talk (using AT&T towers), so I'm not getting any of the VoLTE service in any regard, so the only reason to do this would be to get a firmware that has timely updates.
Any thought from those who've had the phone for a while?
I would leave it as is unless your compelled to change it. I'm on the H9493 TW version and still on February's patch. Some regions have moved to March already. It will come in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the reply. I had heard that the H9493 was a bit behind in other regions, but if it's only by a few weeks or so then I'm not too concerned. If it was more like a couple of months behind, then I would maybe look at flashing another region's firmware.
Looking forward to getting the phone. Was really tempted to last year, but the price kept me away. Now though, I picked up a brand new one on Amazon for only $629, which I believe is still cheaper than the U.S. model, surprisingly!).
I flashed the US firmware when I received mine (mainly for the T-Mobile VoLTE) and it gets updated pretty quickly. It has been a week or more since the March update came. Other than somewhat faster updates, I'm not sure if there will be any benefits for you though.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just hold off, since it sounds like the updates come fairly quickly, even if not at exactly the same time.
Well, we're a week into May and I'm still on the February patch.
Got to say, I'm not too impressed with Sony's update policy, at least for this version of the phone. Here's hoping something comes through sooner rather than later.

Which, I take it, operates on a different update schedule than the rest of the H9693 models?
What a mess. If I didn't already have the phone set up the way I'd like, I'd just install a different regions firmware. Still may have to think about doing that as it doesn't look like I'll get any updates anytime soon.
They are all over the place with them because some get held up based on region. I had a few HK variants over the years and they did eventually catch up. The OEM updates frequently but the methodology is fractured.

Thanks for the info. I still may flash a different regional firmware if I have time this weekend. While it's a pain, it might be the best thing in order to get timely updates. I'll have to research the method to do it (I believe you can do it using Sony's own software), and whether this will wipe the microSD card as well as the phone data.
Sony software will only flash same regional software. You will need to use Newflasher. Read the instructions, it's not difficult..

Question CARRIER SAYS PHONE IS LOCKED BUT IT'S STILL USABLE

So I posted earlier about not getting OTA updates. Turns out apparently my phone is locked by Verizon as both they and Samsung have confirmed. What's weird for me however, is that I can still use my phone. I don't get any regional lock errors when I place my new simcard in. It works perfectly actually. Only problem I'm having is with the OTA updates. Does anyone know if it's possible to have your phone locked by a carrier but still be able to use it? If so, is it possible to unlock the phone without going through Verizon's 60 day period of network use? Looking online, all these sites keep talking about sending an unlock code. My phone doesn't request one so don't know what to do.

Thanks for the reply Sir. I looked into it and yeah that is my exact issue. So I'll just go with the option to flash the latest update. What I wanted to know now is, since I've missed SOOOOOOO many of the previous new software updates, should I just fast forward to the latest or start one at a time?
Mine's also the Verizon model. I can't find the firmware update for SM-G998U but I read somewhere that it's alright to flash the SM-G998U1 Verizon update. Only problem is I'll lose all my data. Do you happen to know anything about that?

Question Can't update SM-G998U att unlocked

I posted in wrong area hopefully this is right spot...
Hello, new to forum. I have a Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Model number SM-G998U It's from at&t unlocked I'm using mint mobile When I try to update I get a software Update Interrupted message try again in 24 hours. I backed up and reset phone but it didn't fix this issue. Probably because I need an at&t Sim card, not sure.
Second related question is there a non at&t neutral rom that I can download and install ? So that I'm not relevant on at&t and that hopefully won't Include at&t bloatware.
I've modified a few phones before with different roms though it's been awhile.
I'm Learning the hard way, the difference between a truly unlocked phone and a carrier unlocked one.
I just can't afford a $1,200 new phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.
Welcome to XDA
Personally I wouldn't worry about updates. AT&T updates can update over wifi or a special AT&T update cell tower. If the AT&T firmware is intact using wifi OTA updates might work. Otherwise a Samsung Experience center at Best Buys can do it. Or you could do it yourself.
I avoid touching the firmware on my N10+'s, this one in my hand is still running happily on Pie... lol, Samsung upgrades/updates can and do break things. Once bitten, twice shy.
having the same issue with a used unlocked ATT device that I bought recently in India. Unable to update it. Is possible to load the stock ROM and remove the AT&T one from this phone? will that help?

You can always download the latest unlocked firmware from https://samfw.com/ and flash it with Odin
