Rooting Dev Edition [Kit Kat]

Is there a method that has been released yet?
Unlock your bootloader, flash TWRP and then flash Supersu. Very simple to root a dev device.

Is there away to brute force root? I'd like to root before I unlock my boot loader, so I can back everything up before the wipe. :-\

You may be able to use SlapMyMoto. Not sure though.
Go to this thread and follow directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534850. Once you install the recovery, it will root your device for you.
If you have a Dev edition device why not unlock your boot loader first since it will wipe everything just get it over with. Flash your twrp and make your stock back up. Then let twrp install root. Done. If you are worried about losing anything from unlocking the bootloader then back it up to your PC. If you want a complete stock set up of your device then you have stock fast boot images for your Dev edition device and don't have to worry about that.

Reset To Factory Staying Rooted

Is there any way to reset to factory in custom recovery without losing root or unlocked boot loader?

If you mean a factory reset, as in a full wipe, then you can do this from TWRP and it will not affect root nor your bootloader status.
On the other hand, if you mean re-flashing the factory image, then no, you can not do it from recovery. And you will loose root. But your bootloader will remain unlocked. FWIW, if you are unencrypted, flashing the factory image will also encrypt your kernel again.

does wipe bootloader unlock wipe all data on p8 lite ?

It's not clear for me.
Unlocking bootloader on a p8lite will erase automatically all data on the phone ?
Thanks and Regards.
Unlocking bootloader wipes nothing, it just unlocks the bootloader
But it seems that for security reasons boot loader starts data wipe on unlock.
It never wiped anything on my phone when unlocked it but if you want to be sure that it will not wipe your data just flash TWRP directly after unlocking bootloader and before reboot

How to root stock rom?

Do I have to flash TWRP for that? I want to avoid unlocking bootloader, please tell me if its possible
Unlock your bootloader, flash Magisk in TWRP. No, there is no way to do it without a bootloader unlock.

OTA update over Magisk? What's gonna happen?

If I have a P9 on Nougat B391, I receive an OTA, am currently rooted on Magisk v14. If I install the OTA anyway? What will happen? I know I will lose root, but will my bootloader be relocked? Am I going to lose any data?
Would like to know what will happen next as I am thinking of installing it. thanks!
there are 2 posible outcomes, maybe 3.
1. update will be successfull and you will lose root, twrp, bootloader can be locked too, but on fastboot it will shown as unlocked, if you cant instal twrp, then you need to unlock bootloader even if there is tuped unlocked.
2. update will fail and you will be back on same build you was.
3. never hapened to me, but are possible, that phone got bricked!

IMO, (2) is most possible utcome. (3) may happen if you force DLOAD and other manual methods.
Better:
1) unroot by Magisk Uninstaller, find the download link in the post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74913863&postcount=1
2) flash from TWRP original stock boot img
3) wipe Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
3) flash from fastboot original stock recovery
4) let it make OTA update but select in the System Update settings to use Full (not differential) update - it will not delete your apps and settings
Of course, you will loose root and TWRP but bootloader will remain unlocked and you will not risk bricking the phone.

Magisk Uninstaller does not wipe your phone.
However, unlocking or relocking Bootloader (from Fastboot) triggers Factory restore
