Anyone else having water detection problems? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

My note 8 has never been near or in any water, not even rain drops have hit it. Now randomly it will pop up and say water detected in usb port. Which doesn't really effect me being able to use the phone, I use a wireless charger anyway. It's just annoying that it keeps popping up from time to time. Sometimes it will go weeks without doing it, one time it popped up and the phone rebooted itself and the warning was gone when it restarted. I talked to sprint about it and they basically showed me the door telling me to go to samsung who was equally useless. The first time it happened it wouldn't go away for days and I finally did a factory reset. That worked for the last 3 months, now all of a sudden it's back again.

Check that your port doesn't have any excess lint in it. Also what software version are you on. I think there's one with a bug dealing with the port and causing the device to reboot.

It's clean and I'm on official oreo, not rooted, only custom thing I've done is make a theme using the themeGalaxy app.

I'm getting this quite a lot now. First time it lasted 3 days before it cleared itself. I've had it today but cleared on a day. Deffo a software thing as the port looks clear to me.

Are you on the latest firmware, or an earlier Oreo build instead?

My build is N950USQU3CRBB.

Ok I think the issue was resolved on later builds if I recall correctly. If you decide to update try and test from there.

Not sure what sprints latest is but u4 bootloader is more current. If you do go form 3-4 there is no root option for now or ever.

This.
And you can't downgrade either, so be sure before pulling the trigger

I don't really care about root, I just want to make sure I flash the right one. Anyone know where I can make sure I find the right one for sprint? And I'm guessing I have to use Odin for it right?

Go to sammobile or updato.com, put it your model number, and you should be able to find the latest firmware for your specific model there. Yes you would need to use Odin (be sure to read up on the instructions in the other threads and be familiar with the process before jumping into it...saves time in the end ).

Okay awesome, I'm fairly familiar with Odin, used it on my note 3 back in the day and it's what I used to get the note 8 to Oreo. I was really just concerned with what version I could go to and from, I know in the note 3 days you couldn't skip certain updates. So you were stuck sitting there updating your phone like 3 times through Odin just to get to the version you wanted.

the moisture in charging port is a know error since S8/S8+ and Samsung is well aware of it.
I had it on my first Note8 and there's a few things you can try, cleaning the charging port with gently with alcohol wipes - delete cache in USB in system apps - factory reset -
But best option is to back up everything and flash latest software using Odin.
I ended up just sending mine in for warranty repair as it was only 2 months old

forgot to say that you can still charge using the cable but you need to first turn off the phone and then connect the cable just as the boot up starts

Is this a new one?

So about a week ago I tried to flash the alpha honeycomb rom. Played around with it a bit, but since Im in India I need my Tab to make calls via wifi back to the states, so I restored back to just before the flash. Then I saw there was a new build of Koush's kernal so I flashed that. About 3 days ago I started getting a weird wifi modem error and I would have to reboot to get wifi back. I just thought at first it was because the internet at my hotel isnt exactly amazing, and maybe i was building up a cache somehow? Honestly didnt really have a clue, but I didnt really care. Last night it got strange tho, I suddenly only had .90 mb of internal storage. I couldnt do anything because i had 0 space. So I deleted a few apps as fast as I could and used titanium to move everything else to the SD. I rebooted into cwm and wiped the cache, dalvik cahce, and even factory reset to no avail. then I downloaded the newest Koush rom thinking that if I just flashed another rom Id be fine because it would repartition and start fresh. Apparently not so much. I just bootlooped at the Verizon screen somehow. So again, thinking i knew what I was doing, tried to restore. Nooooothing again. Then I had to go to work so I got a buddys laptop and rebooted into download mode, installed heimdall on the pc and proceeded to try to flash the stock files from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955342&highlight=vzw ... thought all would be well, but I got an error saying descriptor not found. So i reinstalled the driver thinking that was the error I got. Tried again and got an error -12. So i unplugged to see if I could do aaannnything in cwm... and my screen did this... has anyone seen this or know how screwed I am?? Im in Mumbai for 12 more days and I think Ive had the tab for about 2.5-3 months so far... kinda screwed huh?
Don't worry!

Your case seem the stock rom u mentioned is not a full set rom with modem and phone, try to unzip the rom,is there dbdata.rfs? the icon only mean software brick which will back to life easily.
sadly im using cdma
Dude calm down. Thats an alternative download mode. Find a cdma stock firmware that you had search around for it. follow the guide of reflashing and you should be up and running again
Have a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967175
This is the one that worked for me. Good luck!
So why have you posted in this forum?

so I made an attempt to flash the stock files. Hiemdall said it worked, but the progress bar on the tab never went past about halfway, overnight. Now it wont show that download screen unless its plugged into a power source and it turns itself off randomly then immediately turns back on into the download screen and does that process repeatedly. If I plug into the pc it is unresponsive and then turns off after a few min WTF did I dooooo?!?!

If you plug into a power source, without trying to turn your Tab on, do you get a battery icon?
Sounds like your battery is dead, in which case, if you can get it to charge you may yet be able to reflash...
Try letting it charge for at least a few hours and then take another crack at flashing.

Because im sick of seeing non-dev posts in the dev section. Its irritating to see and baffling how anybody could not have enough common sense to realise that posting stuff like this in here is wrong, We have a Q&A and Gen forum for that.
Because there doesn't seem to be any active Tab mods here to move/move, the only way make the users who make the posts in here aware is to tell them. If they are not made aware they will post their next topic here.
If nobody else is prepared to make them aware and to try and cut the crap down, I will, and don't care what you think.
when i had the origional error that you had it was because i tried flashing a kernel via heimdell on a virtual machine. i had the same screen, when i got to work the next day with a laptop that was windows i just booted into download mode and flashed a working kernel and it booted right up.

I agree that the forums need clearing. But you ploughing into every single misplaced thread isn't going to help.
You do realise you can tell the op that this isn't the right forum AND help them and point them in the right direction. Doesn't sound too hard right? Maybe try it sometime.

The point is that the help/advice had already been given on this one but nobody made the Op aware that he/she had posted in wrong place so would have likely done same again next time.
If nobody tells them how will they know? (apart from the obvious, ie reading forum titles.)

I posted here because in other forums the general is mostly for those who have not rooted, and also have not flashed. In most cases people that know what theyre doing tend to only frequent the Dev sections, between that and the fact that all of my issues came from posts in the Dev section I thought this would be the correct place for it. apparently I am wrong, and sooo thankful that someone as heroic as yourself has stepped up to do away useless threads since we obviously have a space limit in our forum. wouldnt want to bog down our servers with my useless post of course...
regardless of the flaming and trolling... im still screwed, my post isnt moving and i will continue to ask those that know for help. thanks for the advice though, ill take it into consideration for my next post... now run along...
I have charged for about 9 hours now and still nothing could i have fried it somehow? If I bring it to verizon in the state its in, is there anyway for them to tell i flashed it? or will they just assume i did since it is pretty much in a state of brickiness as far as i can tell...
TIA and thanks to those whos British bigotry hasnt stood in the way of reading my post and attempting to lend a hand... where i come from the main purpose of a forum is to ask those who know for help and share the knowledge weve attained...
and im not getting a battery icon when i plug in, just the flashing on and off of the alternate download screen
thanks again
Ok to put this at rest coz its getting irritating. You are active old users. And you believe that tab needs more forum modding. I dunno what are the rules but when applying for a mod positions open apply or root for a candidate like yourself or nautious or bytork or anyone.
As for op does your tab get identified by your computer in odin or heimdell? As i said thats an alternate download mode. If computer identifies it. You can get a shot at flashing. Do it via a windows computer please. If tab is fried beyond repair which i doubt verizon will never know you flashed unless you tell them of course
sadly as of now the tab isnt read by the comp and i cant keep it in the download mode unless its plugged in

Samsung S.M.A.R.T Tool

Its hard for me to believe that no one on here works at or is friends with someone that works at a best buy Samsung experience store that has access to the S.M.A.R.T. No they don't .. but they have the ability the flash your phone back to stock firmware no matter what you have done to your phone in the past .. and without having to follow descriptive instructions to do it yourself via ODIN with multiple downloads.
I visited my local Samsung Booth at BestBuy .. I was one of the lucky ones that was constantly erroring out while trying to install the KK OTA .. Samsung flashed my phone back to NB4 without a bat in the eye .. within seconds of my phone rebooting, it re-started the NC2 KK OTA download .. rebooted, and complete success .. my progress bar on the installation past 27% .. full 100%, rebooted and now I am on FULL 4.4.2.
It would be of great value to our xda at&t Note3 community if we had this S.M.A.R.T. tool. I wonder if this is the "rumored" magical flash that supposedly reset the KNOX flag back to 0x0 from 0x1?

The BB guy here showed me an internal memo that told them not to put software on a device that was below the version currently installed due to a large amount of devices being bricked. The wording is paraphrased but that's the crux of the memo. The AT&T Device Support Center here said pretty much the same thing after they took my phone in and realized I was on 4.4 and all they had to flash it with was 4.3.
I just talked to a guy at our best buy and he straight up talked to me about rooted phones. He said he's limited on what he can do but he can flash my phone to a fresh 4.3. He said they can flash your current firmware and up, but it wont go backwards. He also said they should get the update 4.4 in a couple weeks. He didn't care that my phone was rooted at all. He was just happy someone asked him questions.

Real IT Tech! Real Fact!!
I visit BB yesterday to reflash my phone. The Samsung representative had issues logging on to smart tools. She actually showed me the screen on the laptop. She explained that she has to use her best buy login username and password that is assigned to her to login which was failing. No one in the store did know what the issue was. Since I told her I'm a IT professional she asked for my assistance. I verified SmartTool is the software that is required to flash all the current Samsung phones. The error message required that TLS is required to connect. She was using I.E. to login which was pretty simple access the I.E. settings and enabled it. Right afterwards she was successfully able to login to the Samsung Server. Even if you did have the tool its still usless. The tool is only used to access SAM server only. Plus the laptop she was using I'm sure is dmz or other words the MAC ID of the pc is registered on their firewall to even connected. So having this tool is irrelevant. A real Samsung guru knows Samsung has been using upgraded versions of this to flash it phones. BTW they currently have 4.4.2 available. It took only 7 minutes to flash my At&t Note 3 to Kitkat 4.4.2
Had mine flashed on the 5th trying as a last resort to solve a problem.
Little did I know they had nc2 now I am stuck on it and it did not fix the problem.
I've got deja vu of my motorola backflip lockdown days.

It's nothing something someone is going to jeopardize their job for. The actual firmwares doesn't become available on Smart for actually a few days after the OTA update comes through anyways. Plenty of people come in wanting the update as soon as OTA pushes, but often the software doesn't have it yet.
Samsung tells SEC's to not reflash rooted devices. This is a liability issue because you could turn around and blame the SEC for whatever reason if the device bricks. You obviously knew what you were doing in the first place when rooting, so why bring it in really. Sammobile provides the same flashable files, so if you know enough, you should be able to do it yourself.
The SES is really there to support individuals learn and do light troubleshooting. Majority of the SEC workers are not even XDA savey. Smart is really simple, but majority of them do not know Odin or anything outside of what they're trained. So be careful who you hand your phone to. I see plenty of phones get wiped even when it was suppose to be a simple "update."
And no, Smart will not fix your Knox count. Smart can flash a rooted device to an OEM rom, but it will still show a tripped flash from before.

Funny how both of the guys I talked to there on separate days, both rooted their phones, both new exactly what they were doing, and both were more than happy to help me. It depends on how you talk to people. Be kind and they'll treat you the same.
I learned pretty much the same stuff they knew in the time I was there. They updated the smart tool a week or so ago. It's now called smart 2. If the employee hasn't taken the time to learn the program, you're probably gonna be out of luck. We found out that my guy would flash the "HOME" firmware when they used the original smart tool. Home is basically the unlocked firmware straight from Samsung. He used to put that on people's phones to help them out, but we found out you can no longer put that on carrier locked phones anymore. Instead, they need to put the "factory" firmware on the phone. We tried to update my phone straight to kitkat but it failed miserably each time. Once we applied the factory 4.3 to my phone, it worked like a charm. He logged me onto the wifi their and downloaded the OTA in no time.

When I was on MI9, it never worked. Could be due to root as well. But some firmwares don't pull up in smart for some reason I found. In this case the SEC would need to put the phone into recovery and flash the phone through a different menu option in Smart with a "Home" flash.
Not everything is supported through Smart right away. Smart doesn't have any international roms. Even the new tab pro's and S5 are not on there yet. If plugged up, it's reported that it'll brick somehow.
Just be sure the person you're talking to is confident in what they're doing.
BestBuys Samsung Guy Upgraded Me to 4.4.2
about forty minutes ago from 4.3. Took about 20 minutes to do. Walked in and told him that I kept getting the "install interrupted" message & he said "no problem," took my phone, plugged it in and went to help some other customer as I sat there. When he returned, it was done. San Francisco, CA, USA - Geary St. store if you are in the area. Ask for Arschack.
Any news about Samsung S.M.A.R.T Tool?
Best regards
Is the S.M.A.R.T. Tool different than the Smart Switch PC SW from Samsung?
Hey guys sorry to dig up an old thread but I needed to share - this Smart software saved my ass today at the Samsung store in Sydney, Australia.
I rooted my gf's S8 (SM-G950F) but didn't flash the custom ROM straight away. I booted into the stock ROM whilst I wasted for a custom ROM to download on my PC and sure enough the RMM kicked in (which I didn't know about, n00b) and locked me out of TWRP when I went to eventually flash the new ROM. The interesting thing is from that moment (ie, second reboot after flashing TWRP) the OS was not bootable and I had a bootloop. Since I had no recovery, and I couldn't reinstall TWRP due to RMM (unofficial binary error) I resorted to flashing a stock ROM/firmware via ODIN so that at least the phone was usable while I waited the 7 days for RMM to reset.
This is the bit I don't understand. I tried several different firmwares both Nougat and Oreo that I got from the Updato website, several different versions of ODIN, two different PCs and multiple cables but no matter what I tried I couldn't get anything to flash successfully. The main error I couldn't get around was "KERNEL REV CHECK FAIL". Believe me, I scoured the internet and after 10hrs I gave up since I couldn't find any forums or solutions which worked.
Next day I went into the Samsung store expecting them to tell me **** off but I was open and honest about what I had done and started speaking to one of the technical guys there. He was pretty sympathetic, and offered to have a go at resetting it for me. Sure enough it worked first go - recovery was back and the OS booted flawlessly. He said the Smart software is login protected (ie you need employee credentials) and that normally they don't touch rooted phones.
So yeah in summary this software is a pretty good last resort if you think you've ****ed your phone, but I imagine not every Samsung store will help you out so easily.

AT&T Galaxy S6 Marshmallow OTA In Next Few Days Confirmed

The support page for the Galaxy S6 has been updated to reflect that it’s going to receive the Marshmallow update on AT&T in the near future. The support page shows that version number G920AUCU3CPC2 will land on the handset, bumping it up to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Now that it has been confirmed that the update is going to start rolling out soon it’s not going to take long for the OTA to hit the airwaves
Nice.. I hope the edge is updated at the same time
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using Tapatalk
Well I see that the OTA can be manually downloaded and installed on the S6, hopefully the file for the S6 Edge is uploaded soon.
i gotta wait fot the odin ?
What's funny is that the build that is available for the s6 is nearly 2 months old so clearly AT&T has just been sitting on it. It has the March security update, not even the April. If this is indeed the final build and what we will see on the S6 Edge I'm very disappointed in both AT&T and Samsung. The 2016 Nexus can't come out fast enough for me.
I know that back in the day we were able to flash 920 Images onto the 925 but would lose the edge features. which . . . havbe been pretty ****ty TBH
+1
So apparently in the regular s6 thread going on they found there are much newer versions of 6.0.1 available right now, the latest being PD6 vs the PC2 reference by samsung that's nearly 2 months old. I guess Samsung jumped the gun and posted the wrong build so we have literally no idea when the update is actually coming right now.
I have absolutely had it with AT&T, their utterly STUPID reps, and their mind-numbingly slow software updates. If anyone else is in the same boat, I ask you to call them whenever you have free time and literally bug the living **** out of them. This is the only way we'll get the update sooner and if nothing else, it's payback. Here's some arguments I've used:
Other carriers have had it for weeks
Two months (today) since the last update
Marshmallow came out 7 ****ING MONTHS AGO and they have a whopping 4-5 phones updated to it (s7, g5, g4, g3, and v10 pretty sure)
Android N is already late in the beta stages
Also, ask for a manager or supervisor. They're more likely to escalate this issue to the higher-ups.
At this point, I honestly think it's just a way of them forcing us into buying the s7. From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. They do it every year, they don't give us any information on the development of the software, and if no one makes a big deal over it, what's in it for them? Absolutely ****ing nothing.
Together maybe we can move them along.... slightly.

Together maybe we can move them along.... slightly.

I really wouldn't waste your time/effort on this. AT&T is already aware, and they do not care.
Do you really want to get their attention? Stop buying their branded phones (a lesson I keep having to tell myself since purchasing this AT&T GS6 Edge..). This is a HUGE revenue stream for them - both from the sale of the actual phones at jacked up prices, as well as the kickbacks received from 3rd party bloatware contracts. Get an unbranded unlocked phone and make AT&T your dump pipe. They hate being that.
Suffice to say, I plan on getting either the HTC 10 or one of the new Nexus phones this year. Update and bloatware problems solved.
EDIT: MAJOR props to jetta311xx! He found a new .bin for MM for our GS6 Edges. See below:

Good point. In regards to that link, it's asking me for credentials. Is this this a download for the Odin file so I could flash it to my phone?

Sorry about that - the download link is fixed now.
Rahilm has posted great instructions HERE. These are for the regular GS6 obviously, but the same flashing steps would apply for the Edge, just make sure you're using the right image first :good:

I've tried and tried different commands, but I keep getting " cannot read 'sideload' ". Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure you have a working ADB installation. Try this one

Troy - I was looking around, and you may want to try rebooting your workstation if you're sure you're running the most recent version of adb. This should resolve the cannot read issue.

I am in the same boat, nothing I do will allow it to read the file. I tried on 2 PC's renaming it multiple times, even tried to make it into a zip file nothing is working.

I've tried restarting, reinstalling, re-anything lol. Also tried using .bin and .zip with no luck. Is there a video tutorial anywhere? Good luck to you, and let me know if you figure anything out!
I wish I had better news for you guys. It just seems that ADB can be a little finicky - it's not the update file. I ran into the same issue and once ADB decides to start doing this, it doesn't even bother reading the file.
These are the steps I took and I eventually got it to work:
Make sure that the update file is in the same directory as ADB
Verify that you are running the latest version of ADB
Rename the update to a short filename like "ota" and add the .zip extension
Verify in cmd that the file renamed with only a .zip extension and not something else (eg: not ota.zip.bin or ota.zip.zip)
Restart your computer
Before plugging phone in, run "adb devices" and verify daemon is started with no devices listed
Plug phone in and enter adb sideload mode
Run adb devices again and verify the presence of your device
Run adb sideload update.zip
If doing things in this order doesn't work, all I can suggest at that point is to completely remove all ADB installations, reboot, and do a fresh install of the latest version of ADB. Some people have reported success with going the nuclear route and loading the latest SDK, but it's all very much YMMV.
Its here and working!!!

Omfg I hate and love you at the same time. I'm at work right now, but will DEFINITELY be trying this as soon as I get home.

Just finished the update and everything worked properly. Thank you for posting information on this. Now, the true test . . . a month later . . will it still speed along like its doing right now?

August update now available.

65mb.
Hope this helps with the recent battery drain .
Battery is pretty good as is, for me. Curious how this will effect engboot, other potential roots, and switching to and from U firmware.
My battery would last me all day , up at 6am,thru work, get home, and by 11pm , be at 20%. Since the July update, I'm lucky to make it to 5pm.
No Samsung Cloud in this latest update, I guess I can just hope for it next month?
I'm not rooted, but one thing I noticed is the screen lock sound is broken. Unlock sound still works, but locking is silent. I see the sound is still there in a file manager, just has no audio... just don't know if I wanna root to fix that.

I've had success using Ez disabler to clear the data on the at&t software application. Every time you clear the data, it resets the 24 hour clock letting you check the servers again.
Seems like the 935a is a dead issues, might be time to shop around for something with an unlocked bootloader, especially coming from a nexus 6p.

Yep, got it...However, it seems ATT has taken the update offline to prepare for a new bootloader V3 package.

As someone with a T-Mobile S7 stuck on bootloader version 3, this makes me happy. Apparently Verizon's is on version 3 too. I was afraid mine would just be permanently stuck on it while the other three carriers and the unlocked version get to swap back and forth.

I just came back to att software from the U version, and the update was there for me.
Any chance a ZIP file is in the works that I can use to update my S7 Edge on Cricket ?

Possible Stop New Update 60% Battery Limit, Please Help

Hello,
Can someone please explain if its possible to stop the update that lowers your battery to 60 max charge? Im with tmobile, running on the PI4 and have NOT updated yet but I received my first warning. I want to keep this phone, I dont feel I'm at risk and I only charge the phone when Im awake. Please let me know if this is possble, and if you can point me in the right direction. I'm not a complete newbie but Im not pro either.
Thanks in advance for any help
Look for the new thread under questions and answers saying package disable pro. It'll solve your problem. I also got the update but didn't apply it from Tmobile. Using the steps outlined from the user in package disabler pro version number 6.3 it removed the update icon I had received. Again, be sure to follow the instructions from that new thread by not using the newest version. Use the 6.3 that the poster provided.
Link is below.

I used the package disable and it stop it but we will see how long
Update already installed.

You have to also remember and be careful to not update Package Disabler Pro or EZ Disabler in the PlayStore. Samsung forced them to remove system updates from their apps. Sucks to have to manually update everything, but that is where we are at.

I know that wasn't meant for me, but absolutely no can do!! The phone I will get may not be released in the US until January, plus T-Mobile still has my bill jacked up! I'm not going to fight them for a full refund until they stop charging me for a phone I already paid for in full! I've been fighting them since September to correct my bill! Then, they have to clean up that mess of charges for the Tab and everything else. I'm using this baby until the day my refund is clear to be deposited directly back into my account with no problems AND when I can get my hands on the Huawei Mate 9!
