Yellow screen - off memo oversight? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I just read a review that brought up a great point about the yellow s-pen ink color on the screen off memos...when you go to look at those in Notes later, if the ink remains yellow (and the background goes back to white), you will hardly be able to read them. That seems like quite the oversight... I hope this isn't true. Has anyone else heard about this?

It looks like a really bright yellow. There is a picture on one of the review sites that has the phone in landscape mode with a white background and something written in yellow and it's clearly visible. I'm fairly positive you can change the color to whatever you want if you are concerned about the yellow.
Edit: I just wrote in yellow in s-note on a white background. Can read it perfectly. Nothing to see here.

In Screen Off Memo app itself, Nope. But theres an option to turn off the Signature Colour option in Advanced Settings of Screen Off Memo in Settings.

So,when you save it w/the signature color off,it saves exactly as your screenshot shows (white on black/black on white background vs the yellow or other colors on a white background)?

I spent some time with a demo unit. Your concern is unwarranted as the notes taken remain clearly visible when you go to Samsung notes.

What's the "signature colour" for the black s-pen when the screen is off?

I believe it is white ink on black background, then switches to black on white when you open in Samsung Notes.

That's not cool, the signature color should match the s-pen's color in all cases (so the midnight black should come with a grey s-pen)

Whips, you confused your original question with the answer you received. Signature color is yellow. When signature color is off, then it's grey.
As for me I really like the signature color for the off screen memos. But when it's yellow on white in the Notes app, it is harder to read, especially when looking at my notes in thumbnail view. It would be ideal to change something to make it more legible without having to turn off the signature color option.

What a tease! Haha, it's so dumb -_- like how could they have not notice that

It is possible. You can write in yellow and save the text in black. - Turn on signature color in the S-pen feature then, Go' to Samsung notes settings -> "pen color for saved notes" and choose black

It is possible; Turn on signature colour, and go into Samsung Notes and change "Pen colour for saved notes." and choose black.

[Q] Faulty screen?

I have a question about the screen on the SGS, i just got one and when i look closely on the screen I see small dots. Kind of like a chessboard feeling, I noted it first when I looked closely at the "Application" ikon in the bottom right corner. The four white fields look almost like small chessboards except that the "black" squares are more grayish and not black as in a real chessboard .
I'm wondering if my screen is somehow faulty or if it is supposed to look like that?

Try to do a screen test. Type in the phone (*#0*#)
okey, what am I looking for in the screentest, I have done that before, as I recall there are just at series of color test, the pattern im speaking of is on the whole screen, almost as if it was low resolution or something, I saw some information on a thread about this, but I cant find it anymore.
Bring it to a service center/phone shop, compare it to whatever display models they have? If you see a difference, you can turn it in on the spot

That's called the pentile effect. Just google pentile. Its how it is there is nothing you can be about it, although from a normal distace you can't see it. Its most visible on gray i think.

Listen to this guy.
Samsung used a pentile matrix (one pixel now consists of 5 sub pixels - 2 small red, 2 small green and 1 large blue) for some strange reason. I'm only taking a guess here but I figure it has something to do with the way OLED screens degrade. Blue degrades the fastest so I guess it makes sense to have it the largest as it will then have more "say" in the colors that are made. This is the same reason people complain that their screen is blue when it's supposed to be white. It is this same layout that makes the grid pattern and text harder to read than retina displays.
Thank you for the information, I was worried that i had some "resolution" issue. And true enough at normal distance it's no issue. I only noticed it while comparing some stuff to a friends iPhone4.
I have a buddy with a SGS, gonna compare to his "just in case".
I've heard people talk about dithering so I thought I might as well ask, for example while starting the samsung app the blueish background image is indeed dithered on my device, is that normal? Also when playing a video (stock player) the menu where you can scroll consist of lines of gray instead of being smoothly gradient.
i have this gradient issue either. there are steps in color gradient, is this normal??
for example when u look at the grey parts of the battery when ure charging the phone while it's off. or the samsung apps loading screen. and many more...

[SOLVED] Xperia T - screen dimming

Hi, I love my Xperia T but there is one thing that bothers me. I noticed that every xperia T has that automatic screen dimming when viewing darker media on your screen. For example, when i turn on facebook app, before the actual app opens there is dark grey screen. During that sequence screen gets darker, and when white facebook page pops up you can actually see screen adjusting its brightness to higher "normal" level. That really bothers me especially when gaming. On dark sequences screen gets really dark, and than it takes second or two to adjust normal brightness when brighter sequences appear. You can actually see brightness going down when darker images are displayed, and then back up again when brighter images appear.
So I'm not talking about dimming when overheating or flickering (that second is fixed by jellybean update as I noticed), or etc. And before you ask me I if turned on autobrightness in display settings, it has nothing to do with that.
My question is, is there a way to turn this off because it is really annoying?

All i thought it differs to auto brightness thats why i ask it sir. Sorry for the question then
You dont have to apologise. So, the problem is that when you watch darker images, or videos, or just any darker screen on your display, contrast and brightness goes down. And when you switch to brighter screen you can actually see, with your naked eye, brightnes going up. I see that Sony intentionally put that feature, but it is very, very stupid one. There is no point in making dark images even darker with even less contrast. I assume they wanted to achieve better black levels that way, or I don't know, but it is very stupid way of doing black levels more black. And, of course, there is no setting in settings menu tu turn this nonsense off, nice one Sony!

This similar annoying ass feature is there in my Spectre laptop. This was supposed to be a battery saving feature and I haven't yet found a way to turn it off. Maybe it's also a way to get higher black levels.

Dude, this is definitely not a battery saving mode. There is no need for batery saving mode when displaying dark screen, and the problem occurs when displaying dark images or any other dark media, app or non-app. every single time.

OMG... Mobile bravia engine has apsolutely nothing to do with with that, because bravia engine works only in phones stock apps for viewing videos and pictures, and the effect is not even similiar to screen dimming. It brings more saturated colors and that is all.
Same problem is posted here: http://communities.sonyericsson.com/thread/61560?start=0&tstart=0 and Sony replied "I'm sorry that it has taken so long but I have done some testing now using a later software and I'm not able to replicate the issue that you guys report so I assume it's fixed." It is more than obvious that they like to close their eyes on every single problem that occurs. Thank you Sony for your gorgeous support to your beloved customers. I cant be more sarcastic, of course.

It's not my way, it's the way it is. If one understands what mobile bravia engine is, one could never offered it as a solution to a problem that has nothing to do with it. I'm terribly sorry if I ofended you, and I apologize for my attitude. I'm not mad at you, or anybody else here, I just don't see why would one write something just to be written. I know my T-Rex wery well, and I know there is no "normal" way to turn this dimming crap off, so I posted my question here, and expected that someone of the experts would offer some kind of solution to that. And I got things like "turn automatic brightness off", or "turn mobile bravia engine off" even though I previously mentioned that i tried all that stuff. People are "trying" to "help" me here, and they didn't even read what I've written. I'm really not one of guys that would post a question here just to be posted, I searched the crap out of the internet, and I found apsolutely nothing helpfull. That's why I decided to open this thread, to hear what experts have to say.

Thank you guys very much! Changed values, and rebooting my phone...everything is fine now, no more stupid dimming. However...I noticed that color adjusment is still visible when changing from dark screen to colorfull bright one. So the dimming is now definitely gone, but that color adjusment is still visible, like it changes contrast a bit, from worse to better, it is clearly visible. Any ideas about that?
I'm uploading a video I recorded with my webcam to get you a closer look. I'll post a link once it's uploaded.
Video will be live here in a couple of minutes: http://youtu.be/fHozO8zGZ1Y
After I managed to turn off DLS, that auto-contrast thing still remains. If you look closely, you'll se that the blue facebook stripe (and everything else) slightly changes its color/contrast when returning from the gray screen. But DLS was much bigger pain in the ass and I'm very pleased with the result od turning it off.

Black and white display on all the time? Any way to enable it?

if you watch closely on your N6, the display will go black/white right when you hit the power button to shut down the screen. It looks like ambient display and also reminds me of the galaxy's battery saver mode when the screen goes black and white to conserve battery. Anyone out there think that this can be enabled on our phones full time? I think it would be a great feature to have.

LED Color Change

Is there any way to change the color of the notification LED on the Note 8 without root? I'd like to change it for each specific notification (gmail, missed call, text, etc.). I have tried Light Flow with no success.
I use light manager, have been using it for years.
On the note 8 it works well for notifications, and works for charging but not as well as previous phones.
What is funny is there is a "LED Icon Editor" in the Notification Access area in settings. When I click to allow it to access notifications it goes right back off. I can't find this app anywhere else on the phone.

The problem with Light Flow on the Note 8, though, is that it appears that, even though I believe the LED is capable of RGB, it gets some colors very wrong. It may just be custom colors that are the problem.
Light Flow also now does a bunch of other stuff, aside from the LED. You can have it filter notifications based on pattern matching, make a different sound, repeat the sound, use a popup, add vibration. It does a bunch of Notification-handling stuff and is a bit simpler and more reliable (in my experience anyway) than trying to use a cobble of Tasker + AutoNotification.
I also use light flow and I've had no issues once set up although I do have the colour differences, e.g. select white and the led flashes a purple'ish colour.
Other than that it's been fine, negligible battery usage too.

That setting is for the LED wallet cover/case Samsung makes for the Note 8 and can only be turned on after inserting the phone is to that specific case.
I use light manqger, since S3, then, the colors were accurate, but in my note 4 note 7 and now with the note 8, I find the colors missrpresented, no white, but a bluish tone, no yellow, but a somewhat orange tint, etc, so, I guess the led is not capable to display accurate colors, but, for me, that is not a big deal, the available color suffice my needs

Light Bleed ?

From what has been doing the rounds, it seems as if the issue is real, but so far nobody has proved that it exists, with side by side comparisons showing different wallpapers or by playing videos.
Passing up on this phone would be quite unfortunate as there really is no true alternative to the Nokia 6.1 Plus, with bootloader unlocked, of course.
It'd be great if anyone could show how exactly the bottom area looks, on loading up different kinds of contents :fingers-crossed:

There is not light bleed. The light bleed that seems like is the navbar gradient on android oreo. I am a moto one power user and I assure you. There is no light bleed even at max brightness!

I got my phone 2 days back and the first thing i noticed was brightness on the bottom part of the phone (bottom part of navbar) was more than rest of the area.
I tried with 3 apps "Quora" "Whatsapp" and "Curiosity".
When i launched Quora, Navbar gradient was observed and it looks like backlight bleeding.
But when i launch Whatsapp or Curiosity, the navbar gradient disappears even at max brightness.
So i think this is not backlight bleeding, but i can't verify this with other apps, or even while watching videos on full screen.
this is definitely confusing. we need more data.

Backlight bleeding only visible on some background Colors. Is there anyone on Xda that can prove it that it is or it is not bleeding

What is there to "prove" ?
Take it from users who use the device daily. And coming to the YouTube reviews, aren't the review devices pre production? How good is the hardware there? The navbar gradient is implemented in a weird way by motorola which makes it feel like the light bleed in most of the apps. But I can assure you that its not there. I have tested extensively and you need to physically see it to understand the difference. You cannot visualise it over photos on the internet.

No, what i meant was..... Moto does not give any UI option to user to disable Navbar gradient.
It's either system controlled or app controlled, i am not sure.
And like i said earlier, its not visible in all apps. so does not look like backlight bleeding.

For those who are wondering about the Screen Bleeding issue with the #MotorolaOnePower Let me clear out this for you, Yes, screen bleeding issue is present and it is ARTIFICIAL. (I don't know why but it is) And can easily be fixed via software updates.
How to disable it?
Install "Navbar Apps" from play store and make the navigation bar colour to solid white/black to overcome those ARTIFICIAL SCREEN BLEEDING issue or wait for the #Android9Pie Which probably will fix this issue.
Hope it helps.

What I think to test it. If this is software based gradient or artificial then screenshot can capture it. If screenshot can't capture that gradient it means it is screen bleeding. Can anyone test it and upload screenshotss?

It's the same as we can see in screenshot and yes I never believed that it's an light bleed issue...!!
As I have tested the same with some display tester app but I don't see any light bleed issue with higher brightness whatsoever...!! So it's a intended UI effect and not an issue...!!

The gradient is an overlay applied on the screen. It is similiar to the Night Light feature, when you capture screenshots with Night Light on, you don't see it in the screenshot.
Hope that helped clear confusions!
