Note 9 from iPhone 8 Plus questions - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Good Afternoon,
I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice/knowledge. I currently have an iPhone 8 Plus and am looking at getting a Note 9. I've always been a big fan of the note phones but never owned one and feel that now is a good time to get one.
I've read and watched a ton of reviews on the Note 9 but have some questions about moving over to Android from IOS. Are most of the apps now more optimized to phones like the Note 9 or do they still look a bit dated? I mainly use apps like Facebook, Twitter, Sky Sports, you tube, Instagram and others. Just wanted to see what the look of these apps is like on the Note 9.
Apologies if there are already posts on questions like this.
Thanks for your help.

IMO most apps on Android look/feel better to me and with better functionality than they do on iOS; it's like they're dumbed down
The only apps I don't use that you've mentioned are FB and Sky; the rest I do and they're very good, very sharp
Personally if you're tied into all Apple (says me who has iMac, MBC, iPad Pro and ATV4s throughout the house); it might be a shock to the system. I personally don't like iPhones etc
However a move to a Note 9 would make you realise how much better flagship Android phones are compared to Apple IMO; the screen being the biggest standout but also the ease that you can completely mould the Note 9 into what you need; how customisable they are and how you can set it up to how you want, both Launchers and home screen, whereas on iPhones, you're locked down to how they want you to have it, unless you jailbreak and even then, it's not as customisable

Welcome to Android, the apps you mentioned will be fine on the Note 9. I handle the phones for my company and we have mainly Android for the field but a few of the guys inside have IOS and the apps look very similar on both operating systems.

Thanks for your responses.
I only have an Apple phone and an iPad so not fully tied in too much. I've dipped into Android back with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and some of the apps didn't seem as sharp as IOS which is probably why i've been reluctant to switch again.
Agree with your points about the Note 9. I went into my local O2 shop today and tried it out the screen is really impressive and is such a step up from my current phone.

All main apps update to fit Infinity display but in general iOS apps has better experiences than Android, smoothness, design and quality. Maybe the differences are not much with some apps

Hello. I switched from the Iphone 8 Plus to Note 9. Here are my thoughts.
1) Apple has no features. It is just a calculator against Note 9
2) Although in benchmark scores Apple's CPU is faster, i noticed no difference.
3) Apps are greatly optimized. Not even a single crush (Been 5 days since i have been using Note 9)

Don't expect Android apps to ever be as polished as Apple apps as that won't happen. Apple is a much better refined eco system. Android apps have come a long way so thats a good thing. Note 9 is a nice phone but the only thing going for it is the battery size. However samsung has left all the bells and whistles for the S10 and Note 10. So I will give the 9 a skip as I am happy with my flagship

Hahaha, oh okay. Got it. ??
I think this phone is a massive step up for the OP, given they have an iPhone 8+. It's not even close, actually. WAY more than just a large battery. It's a powerhouse workhorse.

The iPhone has more raw power and utilizes it better. App performance and gaming performance is much better on the 8+ to start with. If you don't need a S Pen then no need to jump onto the Note 9.

Dang another one?! ?
Missy Elliott would say:
"Man, you guys really need to research that minute man chip!" ?
Could you please explain to me what "raw power" you speak of and where it's coming from? Also, what's a "flagship?"
If you don't mind, please also throw the word "premium" in there as well.

Strong disagree. There are so many other things the Note9 smokes the iPhone 8+ in (or any iPhone) that it's dizzying.
My brother has an iPhone 8+. My Note8 already feels much more powerful and useful in side-by-side comparisons. So the Note9 is going to widen that gap.

Welcome to the forum.
I own the iPhone 8+ had the note 8 and now own the Note 9 as well as the iPhone 8+.
Both mobiles are quality products the main difference being the OS.
If a comparison was to be made, and its very unwise to do so, I would compare the Galaxy S9+ with the iPhone 8+.
The Note has an advantage over ALL present production smart phones in that it posses the S-pen. Regardless of OS the Note series is even unique among Android smart phones.
It is near impossible to make comparisons between Apple and other brands. Apple make a superb package and though I detest their business model in this country the mobile itself is very accomplished.
The Note 9, well now.....its a pocket PC with a pen as a mouse. Many consumers purchase the Note series and do NOT use the pen. I have never understood that and never will. If one is not going to use the S-pen buy the S9+.
I repeat, trying to compare Apple products with Android is very much a non starter. Add to that mix the Note 9 is unique even among Android mobiles and its impossible to draw a meaningful, valued conclusion.
I need the S-pen so the Note 9 is my daily driver. I can assure you the iPhone 8+ is also a superb smart phone. Not my choice for daily use but that is me.
Try not to compare, you will find yourself trying to pee in the corner of a barrel!

Im a android guy but took a break now using ios for around month. My last phones were gs8+, pixel 2 xl, note 8, gs9 plus, oneplus 6. No ios fanboy here just honest opinion.
I hated the iphone x which iuser for a month. Hates the notch, cant hide it like oneplus. The phone never got bigger since is even smaller than a regular gs9. Heats up when heavy task to the point that for safety reason screen brighness would dim to around 50% until it cools up. I decided to give the 8+ a chance since i really wanted to give ios a chance.
Iphone 8+ for me... old design, ugly, big bezel BUT IT WORKS. Ios itself is smoother than android. Even more so now in beta 12. Animations are fluid with less to non skip frame. Apps are well optimize and mobile site seems to be build more around ios than android.
I didnt like the way android is going with android pie and how they are trying to copy what ios is doing. Android use to be innovation now they are trying to be ios and samsung. i didnt like what i saw with all the new pixel 3 xl leaks and its big notch. Dont like all phone skin and fragmented ui with slow updates.
Note 9 will probably get pie AFTER galaxy S10, (march/april 2019) is the way samsung has always been. Main reason why im now with ios for a while, gets update on day one.

My wife and cousin both own an iPhone X. That phone runs so much smoother than the Note 8 I used to have. Also videos from tech reviews suggest that the iPhone X has more power than the Note 9. Considering the chip in the iPhone X is a better processor than the one in the Note 9.this comes as no surprise. Ohh and IOS Eco system is better optimized so with the new upcoming A12 chip it will make the gap much wider. So please guys don't get cut as it doesn't change the facts

Smoothness may be slightly better, but there's just too many limitations on iOS. No thanks. I don't want a phone that ties my hands behind my back.

No one is forcing or trying to convince you to use an iPhone. I also prefer Android and currently using the Pixel 2 XL.
However, to be honest the iPhone is always going to be she's in the race simply because every is made in house. So it is highly optimized so runs much he than Android. All the Apps are better on IOS so cannot beat that.
For instance Fortnite lags on the Note 9 but runs smoothly on iPhone 8, 8+ and iPhone X.

That's fine if you're that picky, but for most normal people, ios apps don't run "much better". Maybe very, very slightly. I've had almost zero lag in a full year with my Note8. Maybe a frame drop one time a month? I'll trade that for all the additional functionality.
No launcher like Nova Prime? No SwiftKey keyboard? No sd card? No stylus? No widgets where I want them? No fast charging? No ability to download a song/video and play it immediately? No way to use anything but iTunes?
Pass. I'll take my ity bity tiny lower performance that most people wouldn't notice. In reviews I've read, no one had lag in Fortnite by the way, so I'm sure it's not prevalent.
"Also videos from tech reviews suggest that the iPhone X has more power than the Note 9."
Yes, from very uniformed or bias sites like BGR. They use the ONLY benchmark which shows the iPhone X has "more power" than the Note9. Literally every other test you could possibly run (especially AnTuTu, which tests the phone's capabilities as a whole and not ONLY the processor) shows that the Note9 destroys the year old iPhone X, as it should.

The A11 chip is superior to what ssmsung has in the Note 9
The A12 will run loops around it no doubt.
Also the new Kirin 980 will destroy the Exynos housed in the Note 9

Umm, you can't compare a mobile os to a corporation. It goes right over apple fanboys heads or they get mad when you compare Android to iOS. They want to compare Apple vs Android and that is an apples to oranges comparison of which you just did.

Great. That's fine. But benchmark tests from an isolated processor do not jive with real-world usage. Even if you love benchmarks, the Note9 destroys the iPhone X in AnTuTu because it is testing memory, GPU, CPU, etc. There is more to a phone's performance than just the processor.
Once you realize that pretty much every flagship phone has an insanely powerful processor, it comes down to what you can actually DO with the power. That's where the Note9 absolutely CRUSHES the iPhone. There is nothing you can do on an iPhone that I cannot do on my Note9, but there are TONS of things I can do on my Note9 (productive things, at that) that you cannot do on an iPhone.
So, once again, the Note9 wins easily. Better hardware, comparable chip, WAY better productivity features.

I had the Note 8 so I know whats coming for the Note 9. Even the OP6 destroys the Note 9.
When you take Huawei into consideration it is clear that they will wipe the floor with Sammy. The Mate 20 pro will easily kill the Note 9

You obviously either don't have a Note8, or you do some crazy things to your phone. I have had a Note8 since launch and it's SMOOTHER than when I first got it with zero lag. Oreo made it better, and it was damn good to begin with.
You're obviously just trolling though so I'm done discussing it with you. Enjoy your iPhoneX. I wouldn't pay $500 for that thing.

I switched from an iPhone 8 Plus and pretty disappointed. The Note 9 is definitely a nice phone, but there are so many little things that irk me about Android. Maybe the Note 9 is too much phone for me? I will be boxing it up and sending it back to Samsung next week unless someone wants an unlocked model for $950 [emoji23]

Note 4 or iPhone 6+

Hey guys my mind are messing with me, I'm so confused I had android since 2009 and now I'm thinking switching to iPhone 6+ bigger screen, I had all mobiles from HTC to Samsung, I'm afride If I'm going to buy note 4 it will be laggy on touchwiz plus they never update there phone, look at iPhone they update there iPhone 4 and it 4 years old, what do you think is this note 4 gonna be better choice?

Don't get me wrong I am not fan of company, I just buy what deserves to be bought and fits my requirement, but iphone 6+ is not worth the money that's for sure, you might buy it only if you're a big fool and love to show off an expensive sh*t to your friends, better go with Note 4. And what makes you call touchwiz laggy? I had the Note 3 I never saw any touchwiz lag and with new gen of touchwiz it should be butter smooth, tho I can be wrong as I haven't used the new touchwiz just yet but I feel it will be smooth and Samsung does updates their phone, rest your choice.
Stay with Android. Trust me.
If you're thinking about gettibg a iPhone 6 why not consider a nexus 4. ???
Stay with android. After Android L update you will get speed boost.
If they weren't so grossly overpriced (over $1000 with tax for the highest range 6+, I mean come on), I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the new iPhones. For pretty much everyone I know, their lackluster specs are all they really need. But seeing as how you're on XDA, the Note 4 is without question the better option.
I bought the 6+ and note 3 and to be honest it actually sucks. I have had iphones and note series from day 1.
The 6+ feels cheap. the siftware has issues. Not all of them are optimized so it feels like when the ipad was released. Apps looked zoomed in. I will get rid of this and get a note for sure. It just has so much more to offer than the iphone.

I don't care about phones getting dropped from updates after a couple years for a couple reasons. First off old devices on new software (I'm speaking about iOS) run like a bag of ****. My sister is using my old 4 and it runs like garbage. Secondly most people don't keep a phone for more then 2 years anyway so updates become irrelevant.
iPhones are great if you don't mind paying a premium for outdated hardware on a platform that is always behind Android. Apple does provide a fantastic warranty though, I'll give them that. Granted my S3 has never had issues and in my circle iPhones seem to be more problematic (that may not mean anything though).
For me Android is about flexibility and features that are years ahead of anything on an iPhone (for the most part). I'm patiently waiting to replace my aging S3 with a Note 4 because I believe it is the best phone of 2014.
If you get the 6+, all you see is a bigger screen, no more no less, now even with the big screen the quality is still not compare to the note4. The note4 which I have read many reviews, they all stated that it has zero lags (using snapdragon chip instead of Exynos) and the more you're going to use the phone, you will appreciate all the new features of the note4, like wide angle front camera, super smooth Spen, mutitask/multiscreen. Multitask/multiscreen is a big deal for me, imagine, while you on the phone talking, you could search the web, looking for something, circle it open messager, paste and send. Basically you could open multiple apps and flip through them like on your PC. Iphone is way lack of multitasking (none), this is one feature where note 4 is on the top. Now you should ask yourself, with the iphone beside a bigger screen what else can you do???
I thought about the 6+... no I actually stayed up, pre-ordered, but cancelled it. While 6+ is a very nice phone, I am pretty sure the next iOS update will cripple it. Apple is pushing for software optimization while staying 1GB of RAM, I have to say it is enough for now, but higher screen resolution and richer multimedia content will push the it to the limit, doesn't matter how they freeze the app while it is in background, the next time you relaunch it, it will restart the app instead of resuming it, the same problem we saw with earlier Windows Phone. The next version of iOS might even be more useful (common Apple, give us default app option, and lock screen rotation per app), I will stick with Note 4 for this year around.

I got the iPhone 6, not the + but I saw it in store today. Although it's a nice phone the note 4 is the better device without a doubt. Just put the hype aside, you'll see that the note is the clear winner.

The Note 4 was my next phone of choice. I have now seen the Plus. Tbh these phones offer a different user experience. One is not necessarily better than the other. There are features on both that are unique. It really is a difficult call. I want to see evidence of both cameras in use. Not available yet. And full features of both. But features versus user experiences are two different things.

Touchwiz on note4 is super smooth, no lags based on all the review I read. The beauty with Android is ton of options/customization, you always can just pick another launcher ) , throw in another feature to convince you - super charge 0-50% in 30min and super power saving mode give you 2 more days with only10% battery capacity left. The list just goes on and on...BTW, I believe Android L will be on note 4 when it released. Based on the history, the S3 which is 2 generation old and it's running on kitkat right now, so I'm sure Android L will be on the note 4.

Touchwiz will lag. It always has, and always will. That's not to say that the note 4 won't be great.. Samsung just adds so many useless features, and makes the ui look trashy.... So it weighs down the interface. I'm ecstatic with what the note 4 brings, and the fact that it releases on my birthday.. Happy birthday to me!! Ha! Also, L may not come to the Note 4. It takes Samsung too long to catch up to Google with firmware.. And then you have carriers that get their grubby hands on it. If it comes? Awesome! Just means it needs more optimization.. Cuz art

I would get G3 ?

Note 4 or Nexus 6?

I'm at a crossroads. While I love the productivity features of the note series, I'm also an AOSP purist. I.e., I hate Touchwiz. The Nexus 6 is a huge device, noddoubt. And that is off putting. But Android 5.0 is absolutely gorgeous. In a perfect world, I'd have a device with the S Pen functionality and software perks of the Note, on a Nexus device. Or maybe the solution is a heavily Material Design themed Touchwiz ROM? Thoughts?
If you get the note you get both s pen functionality and aosp with custom roms. You also get a removable battery and expandable memory. The note will have android 5.0 too.
It's a bummer so many people have issues choosing from these two devices. For those people, I recommend the Nexus. You sir just needs a simple apple like os. You will probably never benefit from touchwiz or want to. That's my answer now to these kinds of people.
Im just happy they are finally offering 64gb as an option but prefer the Note 4 for various reasons.

Would be great if a Note 4 GPE came around, with Stock Android5.0 and S Pen functionality.
Nexus 6 is amazing if you don't mind the price it will have. It can charge in 15 minutes for about 6-8 hours of use. And vanilla Android L is going to be amazing as well. The TouchWiz on Samsung phones really kill the experience unless you do the extra work to root and flash a custom ROM for a stock Android experience like the Nexus

For me the Nexus 6 is merely a large phone. What it lacks in usability and design it doesnt make up for with merely being stock android. At all. Ill use a different launcher regardless, Ill wanam xpose the sh*t out of the note 4 eventually, and I dont see a reason to get stockbased ROMs over TW at the moment. So for me the choice was very easy.
I guess that the choice is harder depending on how you use your phone.
I came to Note phones, I, II and now III, due to their Size not so much for the stylus or the multi-windows. I don't root or change anything and so the pure Android with the big screen of the Nexus 6 becomes a serious option.
It's a pain that Google has decided that the price advantage is over with Nexus phones; it would have made things so much easier.

The issue is not the ease of use, it is the blatant disregard by Samsung in the optimization of its software. They simply throw "horsepower" at the issue which is fine for a period of time but eventually the issue begins to show its face again.
While I enjoy the additional features provided by TouchWiz, I dislike the poor optimization of software, there really should be no lag or stutter on devices with processors like the ones found in the S5 and Note 4.
The Nexus 6 from a performance standpoint will be noticeably better than the Note 4 mainly because of the software.

The Nexus 6 only exists as a JPEG on Google's website. According to the media the Note 4 is in 4M people's hands. So between reviews and owner's commentary we know how the display, camera, build quality, and performance are on the Note 4. No one knows any of that about the Nexus 6. It would be probably be wise to see how the Nexus actually performs rather than going on paper specs alone to make a proper comparison.

It would be probably be wise to see how the Nexus actually performs rather than going on paper specs alone to make a proper comparison.

We can make assumptions based on the data provided for the Note 4.
The resolution, processor and ram are the same, logically we can assume that performance will be similar with a slight edge to the Nexus 6 based on historical comparisons of stock android vs. TouchWiz.
We can also assume that battery life will be comparable between the two since the screen sizes are roughly the same with battery capacity and processors being identical. We know that Android L has a positive impact on battery life so there is a great possibility of the Nexus 6 performing better in battery endurance tests than the Note 4 atleast until the Note 4 is also updated to Android L
While these assumptions are no substitute for the concrete testing that can be found in formal reviews, it is essentially our best bet at guaging the Nexus 6 before any reviews are released.

Sup msavic. Thing is, even my i5 desktop lags sometime... And we're talking about a cell phone. no doubt it's going to "lag here and there." Really not a big deal. Even the nexus has "lag" issues. Hell you should see my ipad3 lol. Either way, the Note just has so many more features its not even a close match. If you can't see that, I recommend the Nexus for you msavic. And I personally think the Nexus looks terrible lol.

Thanks for the recommendation!
Of course there will be lag here and there, nothing is perfect but TouchWiz is filled with more than occasional lag. I have used TouchWiz for over two years now and while it has improved slightly, the experience is still lacking compared to other manufacturers.
We don't have to look at barebones stock android or even iOS to find smoother and quicker user interfaces.
HTC is able to create an extremely fluid and quick user interface that very rarely lags or experiences a slow down, LG also fills their devices to the brim with features yet maintains relatively good performance, G3 not included.
It's extremely evident that Samsung doesn't allocate enough time to software optimization, they simply sweep the problem under the rug by throwing in the fastest available processor in an effort to keep the UI quick.
I'm not sure why your i5 desktop is lagging but it's most likely due to poor optimization, my Surface Pro 3 with an i3 flies through every task I throw at it and never stutters or lags while doing so unless I attempt to do hardcore video editing at which thermal constraints and processor limits cause slow downs. Microsoft did a fabulous job of optimizing the device and it shows in the user experience. It is noticeably faster than the high end desktop I built a few years ago even though it's specs on paper are lower.
Your iPad 3 on the other hand is well known for being underpowered, the processor/GPU combo is not capable of running the high resolution screen hence why Apple released the iPad 4 with beefed up internals so quickly afterwards. Software optimization is far from the issue with the iPad 3.
Regarding the Note 4's extra features, there is quite a few which I find useful from a productivity standpoint but I find it hard to be that productive on a 5.7 inch smartphone screen when I have access to a 12 inch tablet with a full size stylus. The writing experience isn't as comfortable on such a small screen and multi-window is in my opinion better suited for larger screens.
With all that said, the Note 4 is still a good device but it is far from the productivity king everyone makes it out to be. If it is your sole device, it can get the job done but frankly there are much better devices for productivity out there.

It's been about 2 weeks. I rarely have this issue with this on my Note 4 as far as lags go. There are hangups at times, about two or three in 2 weeks? Give me a break. All computers do this. I don't see an issue with it. To me, what matters are the little big and little stuff in touchwiz that makes my social and work life much more productive. This is not possible with other devices as they do not have these features and/or the hardware.
It also seems you don't use the s-pen at all. "there are much better devices for productivity." lol.. get out of here. I'm telling you as a working professional, there's not. Even If you don't' use the s-pen and the multiwindow features. The Note 4 has a better display, a better camera, a better battery life, better looks, sd card, and all the geeky features that a geek like myself wants. But I do use the s-pen, I do use multiwindow, all on a daily basis. The Note 4 is the Productivity King in my books. No other phones come close. And yes, the nexus is too damn big... and ugly. ^_^

Why would I do work on a 5.7 inch display with a flimsy plastic S-Pen when I can use my Surface Pro 3 which has a 12 inch screen and a full size aluminum body pen? Like I said, if the Note 4 is your only device, I'm sure you can make it work but there are other more serious productivity devices out there which are better suited to the job.
In my opinion, the Note 4's productivity features max out at jotting quick notes and reminders, any serious work is better suited to the Note 10.1 or other devices.

When did you do the extensive testing that allowed you to arrive at those conclusions? Oh right, you didn't since nobody else has either, so essentially you are spewing non-sense since you have no means of backing up the provided information besides your opinion.

Exactly, software plays a major role in performance, the G2 is very bloated compared to the Nexus 5 and it showed in performance. The same outcome should be seen between the Note 4 and Nexus 6.
If Samsung decided to spend some extra time debloating and further optimizing TouchWiz, their devices would truly be top of the line in all aspects of hardware and software. They have the hardware down now, they just need the software to follow.

lol, no. That's what most androids get including the Note 4, and trust me, well get a lot ^_^ . I'm talking about the heart rate sensor, uv sensor, fingerprint (which is a blast to use with lastpass), IR remote, thermometer, pedometer, barometer etc.

- The heart rate sensor is hopelessly inaccurate on the S5, you can run it three times in a row and get massively different results.
- The fingerprint sensor is essentially useless for unlocking the device, simply not ergonomic enough for one handed use even with all the various tricks people have come up with.
- UV sensor is a cool party trick but in reality I have no use for it, any weather app will tell you the UV index.
- IR Remote is essentially the only useful feature out of the bunch you posted, while I don't regularly use it at home due to no tactile feedback from the screen. I can essentially use all the functions of my current remote without looking just based on the feel and shape of the buttons. Unfortunately a glass touchscreen can't replicate that.
- The Note 4 doesn't have a thermometer, Samsung removed it starting with the S5. I used it on the S4 but it was impossible to get an accurate reading as it would pick up on the heat from your hands or from other surfaces and skew the reading. I stopped using it when it told me it was 32° C outside in the snow.
- Basically all smartphones have built in pedometers nowadays, the iPhone, HTC One M8, they all have pedometers. I prefer this feature on a wearable device though.
- Barometer, my Galaxy Nexus had this feature three years ago, most smartphones have this nowadays as it is utilized to attain a GPS lock quicker.

Should I order Iphone 7 Plus and return Note 7, or will Note 7 be here soon?

I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and order an IPhone 7 plus or wait it out. With the government getting involved is there any chance we will get our new Notes before sometime in Oct or is that off the table now? Is there a chance Samsung scraps the Note 7 this year?
Just wondering if Note 7 took a big hit this year and it is dead basically.
What is everyone's opinion? Is the 7 Plus an as premium device as the Note 7? Or should I stick this wait out? I really like the Note, but I'm sick of the tiny screen on my S7 I'm using right now while my Note 7 is boxed up.
With Samsung offering loaners now, is it safe to say it will be awhile before replacements are here?
Tell me the pros and cons of having a 7 Plus versus Note 7. Yes, I know note has spen and expandable memeory.
Just because Note 7 may not be your device doesn't mean you should go for iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.
You should ask yourself which ecosystem works for you the best. You have Android and Apple iOS ecosystems and OSes. Apple iOS ecosystem and OS is designed for ease of use. While Android is designed to be customized to work the way you want and works best for you. Apple iOS OS closed source and closed ecosystem giving you more security, but less control and less you can do with the apps and hardware. While Android is open source OS and open ecosystem this actually giving you more that you can do with the apps and hardware as well as more control over your experience with the device. This is what you should be using in making the decision rather than this one Android device (when there is so many Android devices in the market and will be shortly) over iPhone 7/Plus.
They are many Android devices that are out now and getting released shortly. I would recommend checking them out first before making a decision.
Again Apple iOS and Android are not interchangeable and are completely different ecosystems & OSes that are designed for completely two different people.
The issue with Galaxy Note 7 right now is that it was released out before it was ready. So basically we are early adopters of Note 7. There are the bad as well as the good that comes with being early adopters of technology. Within a month or two the Galaxy Note 7 will be fine for the masses.
This has nothing to do with Android as a whole. This has to do with Samsung releasing Galaxy Note 7 before it was ready. So don't judge Android over Samsung's issues with Galaxy Note 7.
Just remember Apple antenna issues with iPhone in the past. Possible hardware issues at first release is always possible and does happen from time to time even with Apple as well as Android hardware manufacturers. Keep that in mind.
BTY - This is most likely the best answer you going to get since we are Android people here. Just saying.

Guys. There's no denying that iOS is closed source and therefore has less flexibility than Android. Another thing you have to consider though is Android phones, as good as they are, they have many many bad things. Modern Galaxy phones are harder to repair/replace parts yourself, have very poor resale value, and can get slow and depleted battery life extremely fast. Consider this. The iPhone 6S, a year old phone, is beating the recently released Note 7 in benchmarks and real world usage, with a dual core chip and 2GB of RAM vs Quad (And Exynos Octa) core SoC and 4GB of RAM.

I seen those videos before, but for me that is not real life situations I really use my phone for business, I use Word, Excel, Outlook, on daily basis, my son is Apple fan and I brought the iPhone 6S plus for him. Because his work he needs to use outlook all the time, and he is impress on how fast my note7 is in receiving attachments and sending them comparing with his phone. That is just an example, but there are more situations when his phone loose connectivity where my phone still have full connectivity.
I already pre order the IPhone 7 plus for my son. I will be waiting for my note 7 when become available to be exchanged.

There's no denying that either. Samsung phones get better reception than iPhones.
First thing: Samsung is not Android itself. Android is Google OS that manufacture's install on their devices. There are several manufactures that use Android on their devices. Samsung is not the only manufacture that uses Android. So judging Android by Samsung devices like Note 7 is being unfair to Android itself.
Again: choosing between Android and iOS is ALL ABOUT THE ECOSYSTEM. The hardware is secondary.
Nexus Sailfish, Nexus Marlin, Xiaomi Redmi 4, Xiaomi Mi Note 2, Asus Zenfone 3, OnePlus 3, Sony Xperia Z5, LG V20, and so much more devices for this year, 2016.
What I am saying is that no one should be judging Android vs iOS over hardware. They both are about the ecosystem. Once you chosen which ecosystem then you choose your device by what you want from the hardware. Not the other way around.

No amoled 2k, Samsung Pay, widgets, real NFC, removable storage, s pen features, etc. The first four really do it for me. I'm sure I'm forgetting some features I take for granted too.
you couldn't pay me to get an iphone. i can't stand ios. even if i don't keep my note 7 i am staying with an android phone. more than likely an lg v20
Lets be honest here the first Iphone and the latest look the same. I mean Apple was bashing Samsung for the large phone and look now. To me if you want to go backwards then get an Iphone. Also I purchase phones like Oneplus and Nexus because I like pure Android which if all you have had is Samsung you have no clue what it truly is.
My phone today has the google contacts and dialer instead of Samsung. I use Nova with a Nougat based theme and the icons and background have all been changed. Yeah I like Samsung Pay and honestly its a good phone but my 1+3 for half the price is a beautiful phone as well, it also runs close to stock android with a couple of nice features I wish Sammy would pick up

Yes there are roms or more modding for the Pixel series, but at the end of the day, they are all the same Roms with the same tweaks renamed to something else. Don't get me wrong, I do miss my XL 2 at times but whenever I whip out this SPen......yeah, can't top the productivity of the Note 8.

I prefer the Note 8 camera. Mostly because of two things. The draw(right iteration here?) distance for photos is amazing for the Colorado mountains where I live. And also the up close shots are very crisp and clear. I am able to take up close photos of serial numbers for verification emails at work, broken parts where I need to show fine detail and such.
As far as the pen goes, all it takes is finding a reason to use it or just messing around with drawing a bit. I have come to find that my wife really likes my cheesy Live Messages that I draw her, and my daughter stays entertained while we are running errands(rugged phone case). My wife always grabs my phone when we do groceries because of the ease of it, and she's able to make recipes on the fly in Samsung Notes and include clip arts of the photos she just took. Yeah, she uses it more than I do sometimes but I'm not about to drop another $1k on a phone for her.

Appreciate your feedback really helps alot with my decision. For my business i need the best camera and in most reviews i heard the pixel was the best but the Note 8 is a great camera as well. And youre right the productivity of the Note is unmatched. My best bet is to keep the Note 8 and flash a pixel like rom to clean up alot of bloat and speed up the Note a bit. The note has the best looking screen as well and i dont want to lose that beautiful screen.

I used debloat my devices such as this one. But I have come to find that I use the Samsung apps more than the stock Google ones with the exception of Drive or Sheets. Everything else I use works better because of the Pen.
So I currently have an S8 and I'm looking at either the Note 8 or Pixel 2 XL, both appear to be great devices and I'm really torn on which to choose at the moment! The Pixel 2 XL will cost me £10 a month more than the Note with my current provider in the UK, so it's just me deciding which to go for....
I love the S8 and have owned it for 3 months, been running Oreo beta too, which is pretty decent, the only thing is I get lag at times anything from small to large and I'm not sure if it's the BixbyRemap causing it.
Between the two I prefer the Pixel 2XL for:
Slightly smaller, Note 8 looks huge and 1 handed use will be difficult.
Software, although Note 8 has 6Gb RAM I still hear it lags??
Note 8:
Better screen, I love my S8's screen so this is better.
SD card support, 128gb is a lot on the P2XL it's just not expandable
Draw:
Camera, both have great camera's, Note has 2x optical with live focus where the P2XL has portrait mode...
Dam this decision is so hard, any opinions on the above?
Thanks!

Thanks!

The note 8 is the exact same footprint as the XL 1 with just a half inch more in height. So size difference in negligible IMO.
As for Lag, I have experienced absolutely none. I have been very impressed with touchwiz on the note 8. I only got this phone because of the BOGO deal, i was gonna hold on to my XL for another year but my wife wanted a new phone so I had to capitalize. I wasn't expecting to enjoy a Samsung phone this much. It's a beast that can handle anything thrown at it. It ranks #4 in the highest futuremark test that I ran.
I also am blown away by the speed and quality of the camera. And this screen is absolutely Amazing!
Really the only advantage I think Google has this year is the monthly updates. To me those updates are nice, but not a selling point.

Thanks for your opinions, exactly what I was after!
I think you are spot on the Pixel has the advantage of the updates, however, Samsung Experience is much better than TouchWiz was as Samsung has brought it a lot of features into their software that Google didn't have, it's mainly Google copying Samsung these days I find!
I really like the 2x zoom the Note has, however, the portrait mode seems better on the Pixel, from what I've seen on real-life videos.
Choices, choices!!
I have both and here is my take.
The P2XL is lighter and thinner but just a bit wider and it makes it uncomfortable for me to hold (small hands.) I find the note easier to use one handed. The battery life on the pixel is not that great, it drains quickly and gets warm when using the camera. The camera stinks! I really have no idea why everyone is claiming the camera to be amazing. I get better pics from my P1XL and the note 8. Every shot I take is grainy and lacks sharpness. Yes, stock android is better than the sammy skin but I have experienced no lag on my N8 and I like the fact that it auto adds extensions to call in meetings as I am on the road a ton. I am selling my P2XL and keeping the N8. I find it to be a far superior product.
I've been down this road quite a few times myself and in the end the Note 8 won. The Pixel2 XL has way too many hardware and software issues that I want to gamble with. I returned a total of five 2 XL's for various reasons and one Pixel 2 because the screen had a horrible reddish brown tint to it. The cameras are equal in the 200 + photos I took with the 2 XL and Note 8., they both have their pros and cons. The Note has been running great for me and my son. Battery life is great, the display is the best and the software runs nice and smooth. What else can I really ask for? My biggest complaint is the added length to the Note because it sticks out of my top coat pocket where I like to keep my phone. Other than that I'm thrilled with it. When I start doubting my decision I go here and my doubt is removed.

Thanks for your thoughts!
I've read that about the Pixel 2 being wider making it uncomfortable when holding, which tbh my S8 is great because it's not very wide, so I was thinking that would be the same with the N8 so it's great to hear I was on right track. So even though it's got a bigger battery than the N8 would you say they are on par? My S8 can be great sometimes, however, it also can be crap! :-/
There's so many mixed reviews/opinions about the camera I don't know what to believe, so it's good to hear it's not all roses with the Pixel!
I'm still swaying towards the Note 8!
I feel the battery on the note 8 is a little better. Like I said, I see the battery draining faster on the 2XL. And I would certainly be using the S8 if it had 6gb ram and the dual cameras. The N8 is not easy to use one handed but it's easier than the pixel. I actually prefer the more natural look to the XL2's screen but I know I'm in the minority on that one. The screen does have a nasty blue tint when angled even slightly though. And you can always load up the 2XL camera and use it on the note. I was so excited for the 2XL as I have always been a stock android fan boy but google got it wrong this time, the phone is sub par.

Yes, that's what I'm seeing across the net, too many issues out there for a premium device imo! It's a shame really as the Pixel 2 XL has so much potential! Thanks for the link, that's a great link to share!!

Looked at many reviews on the Google Pixel 2XL and Note 8. I currently have a exynos variant Note 8 and thinking about selling to get the Pixel. Has anybody came from the Pixel 2 Xl to the Note 8 and if so are you happy with your decision?

came for the nexus series, to change for the pixel, once they announced the google pixel 2 XL i was so excited, then i sold my Pixel Xl, for the pixel 2 XL, unfortunately in my country was only available the 15th of November, i had to buy a new device to take time....and i purchased the NOTE 8 for a great price, had it for a couple of week, when finally i've got my hands on the Pixel 2 XL... and that i realized...no waterproof, no 3.5 jack, no wireless charge, no DEX, no connection out from the box with my TV, no face unlock, no dual sim,no SD, no ,no, no for what 939.00€!!!!!!!
the feeling was like having an old phone in my hands compared with note 8, finally a send it back after 24h.
For me it is very disappointing because i loved the nexus series and the pixel xl, but i have to admit that, my last Samsung phone was galaxy S2, NOTE 8 seems to be alien technology compared with this year overpriced pixel.
Looking forward for the Pixel 3 though...

Yeah a lot of people don't realize what they lose when they go to the Google Experience. I had to make that very tough decision when we had to switch to Project Fi to save money in a financial crap time. I almost cried when I sold my Note 5!!! Then came Xfinity!??

NOTE 9 feasibility and reason for upgrades as relating to the note 8

Will it be a glorified s9 plus, and will it be worth dumping 1100 after taxes on after all the hype and lies. The so called super smartphone s9 plus is ending up as the same troubling device as the note 8 became after false promises began when released.
Hmm, lets see, add stereo speakers AR emojis, and so called better than 5000.00 dslr cameras. Are people that disillusioned, or gullable, or is it an addiction for those without a laptop? NOW being said s10 with larger display than the note 8. Where's the truth in all this. Honestly, after 2 note 7s, s8plus and note 8, there must be a breakeven point.
before we know it, one will need a car note to finance a mobile phone. I LOVE my note 8, and i see easily 2 yrs before obsolescence. They way they speak now, its useless devices trading in after 6 months. Insult to injury, 2 or 300 max trade in value of note 8.

Op, you are really CONFUSED, the vast majority here is happy about their note 8, I really do not care about what will or will not be the note 9, what lies are you talking about? The hype is made by people outside Samsung, anyway, I am very happy with my note 8, I will skip the 9, as for the high prices, good stuff is always expensive, it is useless to complain about prices when there are so many cheaper options available, it is like complaining about why a ferrari or lamborghini car is expensive, if you can not afford something, look for something else, but complaining is plain useless

Don't be surprised by the hype around new devices, that's marketing . Note 9 will be good but I personally won't need to upgrade my note 8 for another year at least. Others may want the latest and greatest which is fine too. Some are also coming from older devices. Companies market, and buyers decide what they like. Yet for some reason there is so much added disdain in your post. False promises? Gullable? Way too many value judgments there. Winol is right. Pointless to lament that part imo.

thank you and no its not worthless to me. its informative and it helps others.
I've stopped buying The S-line for quite a while now ever since the removable battery wasn't in. My last S device was the S5 and that was a great device. I've used the Nexus 6P, Moto Z play, OnePlus 5, PIxel 2 xl, and now the Note 8. In my honest opinion the Note 8 will never be worth it's value. It could've used a bigger battery....
Pretty much to sum it up, Note 8 is a good phone. I cannot dispute that after using all these different brands. It's solid in terms of what a power user can want from a phone. Will it be worth upgrading? It truly depends on what the next Note 9 will have and the preference of the consumer.
In my taste, Samsung could put a bigger battery, more software support, and less bloatware/gimmicks.

thank you for your in depth review and candor on the issue, its very sad that history shows they promised us the ultimate device, only to bring the S series into the fray to claim and assume the s9 plus is the nest device on the planet which we know is a PR move, and shows the s9 line as slow on sales again.
Note 9 as in price tradeoff, I haven't yet seen any viable worthy incentives to see the NR as the future superior device, only to have the S10 to be more advanced. seems sammy keeps tripping over their shoelaces while trying to win the smartphone race. Funnier yet is the iphone next will probably come out with a better camera than samsung. If samy would give us a SUBSTANTIAL incentive to upgrade, it might be worthwhile.
Nothing will be the ”ultimate device” as different folks want/need different things! Also, it is all a bit premature until the Note 9 arrives and we can read the reviews and experiences of an actual phone!
Personally the best phone for me was the Note 2, it was really innovative and I loved it. I'm very happy with my SM-N9500 and have no intention of changing for a good while yet ... even if I could afford to!

Well Samsung will always be king of displays. I don't think anyone can dispute that Samsung devices are beautiful with their curved edges and shiny glass backs. They always think of ways to get people to purchase their new generation of smartphones. It's just how the world is. We see something new we want it, but don't need it.
The Note 8 is more than enough for today's social media apps and lifestyle choices.. whether it be businessman down to gangster rapper.

great wording there!
I will probably get a Pixel 3 XL instead of the Note9.
I like the Note8 but I think the new one will be very similar. It's fun to try new things.
I had a Nexus 6P before that I miss sometimes.
As it stands for me today I plan on staying with the Note 8. I jumped back and forth a few times with the Pixel 2 and 2 XL and the Note won the battle. The only thing that I would have liked more is a flat display, other than that the Note is my choice. I read the bible several times a day with it, listen to online sermons and take it to church instead of a paper one and so on. I'm still getting a bit over three days between charges. I can't find a legitimate reason to spend another grand on a phone, to me that's just a waste. As for the Note 9 specs I haven't seen any from Samsung so it's just speculation and wish lists to me. I'm sure it will be nice but I'll get over it and keep enjoying this one.
so far the consensus is to stick and stay note 8.
