Car head unit bluetooth audio skipping / cutting - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

I recently switched from a Nexus 5X to a Sony Xperia XZ2 (H8276). With the 5X the bluetooth was perfect but with the XZ2 the audio skips every so often (music stops for like half a second, then the music speeds up to catch-up) and it's driving me nuts since I use it every day for my commute to work. However it does work perfectly on other bluetooth devices like a portable speaker and other cars.
Things I've tried:
- Resetting the phone
- Resetting the network settings
- Rebooting and turning on/off bluetooth
- Re-pairing multiple times
- Disabling Bluetooth location scanning
- Deleting bluetooth data and cache
- Multiple audio apps
- Removing bluetooth and audio app from battery optimisations
- Disabling wifi
- Changing codecs and connection quality in the developer options (seems to help but not completely and the settings resets on a reboot)
The phone has the most recent update, version 8.0.0 build number 51.1.A.11.26.
Maybe the XZ2 is not correctly selecting the connection settings or codecs to use with the speaker?
Any ideas how I could troubleshoot this even more? I am hoping the next android update will fix this..

51.1.A.11.26 is the latest version.
I own the H8296 with German H8266 firmware.
But since I own this phone (April/May) I never had this problem.
(Use the Bose SoundLink Mini and my car.)
My Phone has Revision 2 Hardware.

Wow, I never saw a H8276.
Hardware Revision is on the Smartphone Box in which it got delivered.
Maybe you want to install the H8266 Firmware on it?

I reported the bluetooth PIE bug and SONY redirected it to the developers.
Audio stuttering with a bluetooth 4.0 device (ThinkPad T440P), while the bluetooth 4.1 device (ThinkPad T460P) is running fine.

Update: After the OTA update to Android 9.0 my issue disappeared!

Bluetooth and music track "remaining time"

XZ1 Compact (Android 8.0) in Bluetooth connection with 2017 Subaru Forester
All apps that play audio tracks show elapsed time, but remaining time is shown as -0:00.
Tried all sorts of permutations through the Developer Options, but none seemed to make a difference.
All previous Android phones, same setup, running Android 6.x through 7.x, don't have this problem.
Is this a known bug?
Thanks
I have the same issue with my phone (not the same car, just bluetooth media info not working on any device), and I think it has something to do with android 8.0, because google's Pixel also has this problem when updated to 8.0
yeah, not working great on my Hyundai i40 (with Navi unit) (dont see any song names or song duration & intermittent working of FF and Rev)
I changed the version of BT to 1.4 in the developer settings and it helped a bit

The SPP Bluetooth profile doesn't seem to be supported in Android 8.0 running on the XZ1, XZ1C (and apparently the Pixel?).
The others, HFP,OPP,PBAP,AZDP,AVRCP,MAP are all present, according to my external BT devices.
Then again, this may have nothing to do with the BT bug we're discussing here.
Got the new update this morning and still Bluetooth bug, that SPP profile doesnt have anything to do with the music, but its good to know.
One appreciated improvement in the most recent (...12.34) firmware is that the long-standing Bluetooth bug, where connected BT devices do not show the remaining playing time of a media file, is fixed.

Bluetooth dropouts when using stereo speakers

This is a long shot.
I have a pair of Bluetooth 4.1 Minirig speakers that can be set in stereo mode. However when in stereo mode one channel experiences dropouts. Running in mono mode is fine.
The issue is with the Nokia 7+'s Bluetooth transmission as when using other Bluetooth enabled devices to power the speakers the issue does not occur.
Anyone else had this issue when connecting stereo speakers or headphones and know of a solution?
I have checked: System > Developer Options > Bluetooth Audio Codecs and tried changing these setting but the changes did not "stick" and problem remained.
Maybe there is an alternative setting somewhere that can be tweaked.
Thanks in advance.

I'm also having this issue: whenever I'm connecting my N7+ onto the car's audio system via Bluetooth I have to change the codecs to the correct one every single time to make it properly work (have sound/audio at all). The settings also don't stick or are not being saved. Also looking for a solution for this, unless an update miraculously fixes it.
Same problem here when connected to my car by bluetooth. Occasionally there is a dropout. This does not happen when my friends connect with their phones (oneplus 5, samsung, allview. or my old lg g4).
Changing the bluetooth audio codecs does not work as it does not remain selected and it switches to default. This, as i understood, happens on android 8 and has been resolved in the Pie beta and should be ok in the final Pie release.
When I raised the issue with the superbly talented nokia tech support they either act surprised as if its an unique issue to you or send you a list of compatible bluetooth protocols. Are we expected to change our cars and speakers to make the phone work?
I had this issue after installing garmin connect. Theres a thread over in the garmin forums (forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/garmin-connect-mobile-application/garmin-connect-mobile-android/1375800-audio-streaming-issues) about it. Also on the nokia forums (community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000022239/). Seems to affect some phones on 8.1
Anyway, I'm on Pie beta now and the problem has gone away.

My XZ2 often dropps known Bluetooth devices

Hi all,
I have the issue, that I need to reconnect my XZ2 to my BMW 1series (F20) really often, because it does not autoconnect when the ignition is turned on.
So I need to pair the XZ2 again and again with my car.
Also my BT-Sony Headset is affected.
It seems, that my Phone drops sporadically all paired bluetooth devices.
I noticed that I can bypass this problem with a daily reboot of my Phone. But this shouldnt be the Solution.
Any Ideas? Can someone confirm a Bluetooth problem?
Stock rom. Build 51.1.A.11.51 @ H8266

Try using new flasher to reinstall the latest firmware.
But delete the "userdata" file, it would remove your userdata.
I gather root, backuped my stuff with Titanium backup and wiped userdata, too.
Now my smart lock is working again.
Thx Martin. Hope pie fixed it.
I have an odd Bluetooth issue too, lately it's been disconnecting the ear buds while changing streaming apps (i.e. from Tidal to Spotify or Podcast) or when moving between networks, either between access points or from WiFi to cellular data. Just started happening this week. Didn't change anything that I can remember. It's almost behaving like there is a power saving feature enabled which is trying to save on Bluetooth use. Sometimes it'll reconnect on its own and sometimes I have to toggle BT. It's weird.
I also have Bluetooth issue.
I have a Bluetooth weighing scale,my xz2 can connect to it but everytime I sync my scale data the scale app gives me a Bluetooth error, however, I also have a xz and it works well.
And I also have a Sony ear phone(MDR-EX750BT), yesterday I connected it but it didn't play any sounds I had to reboot my phone ,then the issue disappeared. I don't know when the show again.this shouldn't be a Sony quality

yeah, ditto. The connection to my Sony WF-1000X earbuds is stable now, with no disconnects like I was getting with the later updates of Oreo.
FYI, I had to wipe my user partition to do the eventual update. the first flash via Newflasher where I kept it intact apparently went bad and messed up my radios and fingerprint scanner. that's the first time I've ever had issues doing that.
Now I am getting Bluetooth problems.
The music has stuttering and normal intervals.
Very disturbing.
I contacted the Sony support.

with what Bluetooth device?
so far with Advanced 3 and Sony WF-1000x earbuds it's been stable for me. As well as my car connection (Land Rover) and some shower speaker I've been using it with.

I think my T460P with the same OS got the same problem.
Need to test it again.

XZ1C Bluetooth Dropping.

Bluetooth is dropping within a few minutes every time with this phone which is running the most up-to-date software. I feel like I have tried everything under the sun to fix this including, but not limited to:
Network Reset
Software Repair
Developer Mode Settings
Has ANYONE experienced or managed to fix this issue for themselves?
When I listen to Spotify via bluettoh headphones, sometimes the sounds starts cracking a lot (due to bluetooth interfierence). This happens when wifi is connected to 2.5ghz router + there is a lot of data being downloaded. Most cases restart helps, as after restart wifi data download decreases a lot. If that does not help (may be just few times restart did not help), than I switch off wifi and use celular data. After that bluetooth headphones work well.
PS I am on latest Oreo. Did not update to Pie as call recording does not work anymore without root.
Thanks for your reply Martynas. I have indeed tried using BT with wifi disabled, but it is the same result.
I would actually really like to try downgrading to Oreo to see if that fixes things, but I am new to Android and so I don't exactly know what I am looking for in my hunt for a US image that will work with T Mobile.
Any advice? Thanks for your time.
One more option would be to try different bluettoth settings under "developer" options. Try using different protocols. Mine all are on auto, but try to use manual settings... lower versions, lower bit rate and hz.
As to downgrade to oreo, there was somebody in the forum who has done it and was thinking to make step by step manual... check with him for help.
PS one more possibility - the headphones are broke or simply not very compatible (if it is just earphones you have problems with)...
Takes 2 devices to make a bluetooth connection. Could be your other device. This phone is running bluetooth 5 which is very good. For HD audio you will need very close or line of sight to get constant audio.

I have tried all of the developer settings to no avail. The headphones are not broken and indeed are compatible. The XZ1C just simply doesn't hold a connection with any BT audio device whatsoever.

Unfortunately it's not the headphones--I have tried with multiple devices.

Did you try this https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...de-fix-bluetooth-audio-a2dp-aptx-gsi-t3950938 ?
Yes i did. But what finally helped was clearing the cache of the Bluetooth and bluetooth midi system apps. But i am still having issues with the notifications :s

Which issue?
Good point, i forgot to explain the issue
I eventually received notifications for Whatsapp and Gmail, but the phone would not vibrate or ring. I checked the notification settings for the apps and i checked the settings for ZUI security and the vibration settings but nothing worked. The phone would not vibrate or ring when i received an app or email.
I use Sony WH1000XM3, for bluetooth problem I finally solve it by entering developer option and change the bletooth codec to Qualcomm aptX HD
Bluetooth issue is fix on latest ZUI 11 update to Android 10
