Android One storage size - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything about it.
I just received my Mi A2 today and it looks really nice. The system storage size takes up 13Gb though (screenshot below).
Is this normal?
I bought the phone cause in my understanding Android One is supposed to be slick and small and is supposed to give me more storage (according to Google). But the system alone takes up 20% of the storage space (64Gb total).
(I already did a recovery factory reset, to no avail. It didn't change a thing.)
If 13Gb storage size for Android One is normal, then I'm rather disappointed.

Thanks. I'll leave it be then.
It just seems a lot compared to my previous (Android) phones.

This device have a/b partition so i think there shoud be 2 copy of OS. So it should take twice storage compare to other phones, its like pixel series

Yeah, I was reading that as well.
Does the fact that seamless updates result in a bunch of duplicated partitions mean you’re losing a bunch of storage space? Not at all. Google says that devices with seamless update support should only be down about a few hundred Megabytes thanks to removing the /cache and /recovery partitions. Removing both balances the cost of adding a second set of partitions. According to Google, the Pixel’s A/B system image is half the size of the A-only system image.

I'm no tech expert by any means, but 13Gb storage size seems quite a lot, even for A/B partitions.

[Q] 16gb Flash drive is read only

I have a 16GB flash drive sent from HP as a restore drive. I no longer have the laptop and would like to use the flash drive as my current laptops restore device. It is showing everywhere as read only. I have already opened the flash drive to see if they put a switch inside. Which they didn't. So any help with this would be appreciated.
Have you tried formatting it???

Yep. It won't let me. I can't even remove the partition and add it back. In computer management it says the entire drive is read only
Hmm... Perhaps then the hardware is actulay only read only....

nothing is there. It doesn't come up with read-only or any options like that. I have tried low level format. Destructive partitioning in Unix. Many things. I am really starting to think the hardware itself is like ROM instead of RAM. I dunno
Have you looked up any chip details, or identified a manufacturer?
Often, these devices have a "programming" tool that can be used to lock or unlock them. I know I can unbrand some of those free ones companies give out, since I have the programming tool.

Minimum storage space leftovers

h-hello
this might be an odd question, targeting both the HTC One but also android OS's as a whole.
my previous device (iOS) was met with massive slowdowns when i began running out of storage space (200MB remaining of a 32GB model) and here i am yet again, approaching 4GB of storage remaining for my HTC One that i bought one month ago.
my question would be how much space should i ideally leave over to permit my device to run at its full potential. 1GB? i heard that 500MB is sufficient enough but i wanted to get some more opinions before i take the plunge and fill my phone up. i care more about speed and power than space.
thanks~

I suggest reserve around 300MB, so when the system needs space you'll not have a problem,

alright i'll stick with that to be safe then (probably a little more, 500MB seems about even)

Full system partition after 6.0.1 update.

Alright, so let me start by saying I read around and I know it's normal, Google just decided to pack the system partition full this time around, but when using the diskinfo app, it shows that there are 0B of unused data! Is that right? Not a single byte? Haha that's weird that Google would choose this! And I know you can delete some Google bloatware to get some space back. Anyways, question here is, is everyone else at 0B after this 6.0.1 update?

Mines full up as well, or at least it was til I made room for cataclysm. Google makes stock with the idea that you'll never touch the /system ever so having it 100% full just means Google is using every bit of space available to them trying to keep from using internal storage space for their google apps.
As others have said and done, delete some unused Google apps from /system/apps or some foreign language keyboards from /system.

Yes, I've seen this said in many threads, I made this thread just to see if everyone else had 0B of memory open.

Empty space is not full but "reserved"

I did a comparison between the system partition of the MMB29K factory image and my AOSP MMB29K based rom with Benzo Gapps which is quite full and the difference is 1,3 GB. The difference is actually about 100M less, because a couple of Google apps is called Prebuilt-something, and it differs from the Gapps installed. So if anybody needs space on system, there's a lot of things to delete from.
This was done to prevent things like xposed. With the more strict root setup and this Google is making it harder and harder for things like xposed which google wants to put an end to.

I sincerely doubt it. I don't think Google cares about any software particularly. It's more to stop those messing with their system partition that are not entirely sure what they are doing.

I don't doubt that for a second. I just don'T believe that that is the main reason the system partition is being filled to the brim.

I really wouldn't doubt it! I was thinking maybe to put an end to root or something like that! Now you have to delete some of the Google bloatware to install traditional root or xposed! I just wonder how they're going to update the Nexus 6 to the next version of Android with no space to work with, unless it is just reserved space and done on purpose.

Just now read that post, well that's just strange! Like I said, I wonder how Google will update this phone further with the next version of Android!
The nexus 5 did the same thing when it was updated to lollipop, it had a 1gb system partition, now the nexus 6 is doing it with a 2gb system partition, the nexus 6p has a 3gb partition, and it wouldn't surprise me android Nougat or Nutella or whatever will probably fill it up too for whatever reason.

The 6P has a 3GB partition? Wow! That's kinda neat actually lol and I just checked the disk space on my sisters Nexus 5 and yea! It's nearly full with a few MB open! And that phone has a locked bootloader and never had any mods installed, it's clean lol That's interesting and I wonder what they're real reasoning is. It could very well be that they don't like system mods on their phones, but like everything else, XDA devs find a way around that almost instantly! Hence the reason people are deleting Google bloatware apps and installing them through the play store! Easy work around

The main reason is simple. Google doesnt think people need to mess with the system partition so wasted space is pointless.
No they dont like us messing with it and to be honest it has been a bain to their devices and os. Sooner or later they will find a way to lock it completely down.

I sure hope not! That would be awful! :/ people buy a Nexus for the development community and the mods that are out there! But XDA devs work fast, there will be a way to change that rather quickly if this happens! [emoji14] But like I said, that would be awful! Chainfire's systemless root is a huge step in the right direction though! Having root in the boot.img so you can remove bloatware!

Have you been readin just what he has been saying about it? Even for the nexus Root is not seen as a good thing. Dont get me wrong doesnt matter to me anyway as I dont use google based roms myself so it is just a matter of compiling the new build.
But it is happening. If you step back like a few of us have you can see it coming. Even more and more apps from the play store are looking for things like root and xposed and refusing to work if they are detected.

This is a very common misconception. Only the android kernel is open source. The rest is not. Only AOSP (different then google android) is open source. The flexibility that Google was talking about was being able to change launchers, SMS apps and things like that. They dont really want you messing with the OS.

3.6 GB Storage used up by others after 7.1.1(OOS 4.1.0) Update !!

After Updating to OOS 4.1.0, 3.6gb storage was used by others under storage in settings. Many users are reporting this in Oneplus forums and reddit. I can find nothing in the sdcard. I even factory reset my phone but no use !! When I switch to other roms, there is nothing under others. I switch back to OOS 4.1.0 then again the others is using 3.6gb !! Please help me , Is it for seamless updates or something ??

Yes because we are paying for that memory and instead they load it with crap
Yea, but you're not paying much are you? And with the ease of unlocking the bootloader, rooting, putting on custom ROMs WITHOUT voiding the warranty...Pffff i don't really care.
Not much? It is more expensive now that any other top device from 2016, it is not good cheap OnePlus anymore. They do not change the price over year like the other companies do.
I am pretty annoyed when something is like it shouldn't be. I should have that memory free and it is a bug or something. There is sale for beer and you buy 1L and get only 0,7L, will you be happy? You still have more than 0.5L and you still have cold good beer which is probably enough but yet you paid for 1L and didnt get it
I updated mine over ota yesterday and lost 7% of my storage space. Tried to do a cache wipe from the factory reset screen but that didn't help. Any ideas? This doesn't seem right for an ~350mb update.

I had this storage bug on my oneplus 3t, but I was on OOS 4.1.0. "Other" was using upwards of 15 gb of data for no reason. I fixed it by downloading ES file explorer in the google play store and analysing the storage. This oddly fixed it for me. The image with ES is my storage after analyzing, and the screenshot with DiskUsage was "Other" usage before. Did you check your oem_log folder to see if that was sucking up your storage?

I checked and this bug is just awful. I deleted 13gb of crap to go back down from 31gb of other to 17gb which I can't find anywhere.
I used the disk usage app to try to figure out what is eating my space and it looks like my system data occupies 26.6 GB. That doesn't seem right. Have only about 4 GB of apps on the phone.
Using the app drives i have only 2.4 GB of system data. Both apps give the same amount of app data.

That thread isn't accurate by any stretch and there's plenty of evidence on the OP forum showing contrary information.
I decided to take a chance on a tip I saw on Reddit and wipe the userdata partition as well. Immediately after the initializing the OS again I had 14gb used in other (see attached)
However, my issue with the phone not booting because of an encryption problem was resolved. It's looking as though there might be a bug with how the userdata partition is handled.
This is probably a filesystem bug with Android. Far too hasty to blame OnePlus for this. On my S7, if you adopted an SDcard as internal storage, it took the size of the internal and double the size of the sdcard and showed that as availkable. So, in taht case it was 32GB + (64GB * 2) = 160GB, whhich obviously was wrong.
The "other" folder shows App data that isn't part of the APK itself. Any caches, game data, etc.
Mine right now has 10GB apps, 17GB other. I've used 31GB out of 113GB available.

Another person said to restart your phone to fix the storage issue. Try that and report back.
Fair enough, a bit hasty in blaming OP I suppose, that's just been my frame of reference.
As for the restart, nothing doing there.
