Anyway to Increase Icon sizes on the Home screen and App drawer? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Anyway to do this WITHOUT Nova Launcher or third party launchers? I know I can change the screen grid size but I do not want to do that either. I tried messing with the DPI sizes in Developer options, but was curious if anyone was able to accomplish this with Samsung's own launcher?
Thanks!

I've tried in the past with my Note 8 and it was a no go. Is there any particular reason you don't want to just use Nova launcher?

Thanks! I have used Nova Launcher for what seems like 10 years. I really wanted to try the stock Samsung everything

Ah I understand. I have tried that successfully on my Note 8 because I ignored the oversized spacing. Then I got tired of not having Google Feed and gave up, went back to nova, haven't went back since.

Edit - I see you don't want to change grid size.

HTC Launcher doesn't let you do that, you will need a 3rd party launcher.
I downloaded Nova Launcher from the Play Store. it will allow you to resize widgets
It depends on the widget but with the stock launcher when I added my calendar widget, I just held my finger on it, a blue border appeared and I stretched it to fill one of my screens.
Some widgets don't allow resizing by default and you need another launcher but ones like the calendar do.
Thank You Everyone
That kind of bums me out a bit... don't get me wrong i love some other launchers and stuff but i kind of like having my blinkfeed etc and keeping my phone like it currently is, just wish this was a function built in.....

scrolling Wallpaper

Sup everyone? Is there a way to get the wallpaper to scroll across the different home screens? Is a mod needed? I used a 3rd party launcher (ApexPro) and it doesn't scroll either. All my HD wallpapers are cropped into tiny columns
atm i don't see any mod about this.
However, you can use another launcher like nova if you want this

If you have Xposed, you can use XGels to accomplish that.

You can try downloading Nova Launcher from the play store (or another launcher if you prefer, but Nova is often regarded as the best). It's not the stock launcher but it is very feature rich and runs like a charm. The only thing you'd be missing from the stock launcher is swiping left to Google Now, but there's a million and a half other ways to use a shortcut for Google Now. I personally don't miss it much.
Anyway, now that I've gone off on a tangent, yeah Nova Launcher let's you customize the grid layout of your home screen. I use 5 columns (like the 6P) and it really is great.
As the rest mentioned your only two possibilities are to root your phone and install xposed then use something like XGels or GravityBox or Install a custom launcher. Your best bet for custom launcher would have to be Nova Launcher as it's the closest to stock. You can even set up vertical scrolling. I'm rooted and my launcher of choice is Nova Launcher. Trust me Google Now is not as good as you might think.

Did you update the Google launcher? I seem to have it, not sure if its a feature of the ROM I am on or not which is why I am asking if you updated your Google launcher app.
yes, i have the last version, but no 5 icons in a row...
nice clock/weather widget, what is it?

I even changed roms, and I still have 5 icon rows...so I guess it could be the rom
Go Weather Ex, I am not a fan of them usually (due to their ads) but I couldn't pass it up...and its free.
I use Apex Launcher and can customize it many different ways.

Not sure how many places i've answered this question, but anyway...
- Remove LauncherConfig, which is locking rows to 4 icons from /system/app
- Reboot
- Wipe data on Google App
- Go to home screen
- You now have 5 icons per row
No need to use another launcher or Xposed apps or DPI changes if you're rooted and want to use GNL with 5 icon rows, as it should be.
It's incredibly dumb how Motorola is setting Google's launcher up that way with a phone that has a large display.
This works on Marshmallow too.
Thanks. This worked with out an issue.
Omg have hey still not changed this by default yet ?

You rock. This info should be in the FAQs at the top.
CAVEAT to the rest: This will reset all your screens to the default. Now's your chance to clean up all those friggin icons all over the place.

I checked on system/app but I don't see launcherconfig. Is it inside of a folder? I'm using root explorer

If you're rooted, why not just use this command in terminal?
pm disable com.motorola.launcherconfig
I haven't used it, but don't see why it wouldn't work. Also avoids any modification to system partition.

DPI settings & associated glitches

Hi all
Just got my s10+ and i can't help but notice how big everything is. Changed my minimum width to 511 from 411 and so far it seems to be stable (and much smaller as I like it to be) but I was wondering whether anyone knows what are the "best" values , especially while wanting to avoid graphical glitches or the camera app crashing (if thats still a thing) ?
Would love to know this too. Main reason why I end up using Nova Launcher to make things on the homescreen and dock smaller, much smaller, but with the s10+, really want to avoid a 3rd party launcher
I've been using a minimum width of 450, and so far so good. I haven't experienced any glitch nor any issue. You can experiment with any value until you find the best to your liking. I started with 420, then 430, etc. Until I found the sweetspot for me with 450.

Why would you want to avoid a 3rd party launcher? Does the stock one have some advantages I dont know about?

Not at all. I have a Note 8 with Nova and though I love it, I just feel like it is another app on the phone which can be avoided, but with the One UI I'd want to try it as stock as possible in terms of launchers but the DPI settings would be nice to do system wide either way, not just on the home screen.
I remember back on the Note 7, when I fiddled with system DPI settings, I found that I didnt like something due to the apps opening in an odd way or crashing, so when I tried to go back to the default DPI setting of what it was, it did NOT work correctly and did not restore the phone to the way it was prior to the initial DPI change, so I was forced to factory reset the phone.
Can someone confirm if this is in fact the case still?
Can anyone confirm if changing the DPI from 411 to something else, and then back to 411 will bring the display back to 100% stock?
I heard that you can get the 6x6 home screen grid by changing the dpi, but I'm not having any luck. Has anyone been able to achieve this?

Question Launchers on GT S8

I have been trying out different launchers on my S8. Let me know of any you are familiar with or recommend.
Microsoft Launcher: I am currently using this and pleasantly surprised. I don't login to Microsoft because I don't use those services but see how it could be a good thing for those that do. MS has made a very nice tablet launcher experience. Even the MS Start news app works well enough as a Google Now replacement. I love to hide junk news sources I don't want to read, and can request fewer articles on topics of interest. There are ads in the feed but at least they are subtle and have an indicator so you don't have to click. Loading news is sometimes slow but it could be my connection.
Smart Launcher: looks great but it is a subscription service to reap the full functionality. I saw that they also use MS Smart but it doesn't seem to work well in that launcher. I can't get my head around the launcher subscription service revenue model, who would pay monthly, or the value add to do so.
Nova Launcher: my go-to on phones. However, the tablet experience isn't great. I couldn't figure out how to move the dock to the bottom in landscape.
Apex Launcher: seems nice but also has a subscription model. I didn't spend much time with it.
Action Launcher: another I used for years on phones before switching to Nova. I also couldn't figure out how to move the dock to the bottom in landscape.
If I'm gonna be completely honest, I'm super fond of the OneUI launcher and have been using that instead of Nova for a couple of weeks now. Samsung has made OneUI even better in the coming updates, so I just don't even change it now.
@SavXL I am in total agreement. OneUI 4.1 has evolved very well. I had a Samsung Note 9 with the earlier OUI versions which I didn't prefer over Nova.
As a launcher hopper, I will use the OneUI launcher again. Icon pack support would be a nice addition.

Indeed! I used Theme Store in the past.
From within OUI launcher icon preferences vs. theme store is my wish for installing icon packs. To be fair, Google's pixel launcher doesn't allow this either.
If you are really advanced, use total launcher and you won't regret it.. Basically you can re create any launcher with it. But 1st time you use it, it's look awful.. By far the most advanced launcher right now if you give it time to understand what you can do with it. But i still use nova when i want something simple to use it in 5 minutes.
Here an example of my theme i created in total launcher. I inspired from htc. (I could create exactly the same launcher htc had if i wanted):

Square Home Launcher by "ChYK the dev" works really well on larger devices. It's like a Windows 10 start menu look, but with lots of options. Takes a bit to get it customized just right, but well worth the time.

What method did you use to change to a non-default font? Did you just download it from Samsung's store?
This one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...v2-1-for-samsung-oneui-1-2-3-no-root.4195613/ ?
I've used Nova Launcher on all four of my tablets. going back to 2014. Just last month I upgraded from a Tab S4 to a Tab S8+.
Transferring was a breeze. The backup function worked like a charm -- all the settings were transferred from my old to the new tablet. And it copied the icons for all the apps -- even those not yet installed. Icon locations and grouped icons were all in the same place they were on the old tablet. Those icons for not installed apps were gray, and clicking them brings a message asking if you want to install them. If you say yes, it opens the app in the Play Store. Then after they install, it goes to full color. For sideloaded apps, just install and the icons turn active. This made it easy to install all the apps I had before. No missing aps.
As far as the launcher goes, all the settings, layouts and defaults are the same. I think the only thing I had to manually install widgets that were on apps that weren't yet installed when I restored the backup on the new tablet.

Niagara Launcher.
For me it's the best Launcher after testing so many alternatives.
Switched from Nova to Niagara and never looked back.
