Notification screen wake - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
Just got my phone in the mail today. One thing I have noticed is that notifications don't wake the screen up at all, no matter the app. I can't seem to find a way to turn it on either. I've used the app Glimpse Notifications on my G6 but it was a bit buggy and drained the battery.
I don't use the AOD because I'm not a fan, but does anyone know a way to ensure notifications wake the screen?

As far as I know without AOD on the only notification you'll receive is the LED indicator at the top of the screen. The screen won't light up when something new comes in.

Also, does anyone else notice that you can't double tap notifications to unlock the phone? You have to tap then swipe - can this be changed? It's super annoying.

Android Oreo introduced new Notification Channels. From Settings -> Notifications, you can specify the priority for each app. Anything below URGENT will not wake the screen when it comes in.

I spoke to samsung support, even if urgent - only native apps will wake up the screen, Like Samsung SMS.
Gmail or Whatsapp will not or any other app you install, only the once that came with the samsung rom installed

I use the app Glimpse Notification. It works very well.

The last 4 years Samsung has stop the faction to wake screen on with notifications...Instead you have AOD to notify you....
So the only solution is to use 3rd party app like ''Glimpse notifications'' that Works excellent with all samsung devices with no battery drain....

this is ridiculous.
I'm on 8.1 oreo latest build for unlocked Note9.
I turn off AOD, I have all apps notifications set to urgent.
Edge lighting works great with the screen on. With the screen off it's worthless. Nothing works with edge lighting and the screen off. And AOD off except the alarm app.

If its sms wake you want there are 3rd party sms apps that will wake the phone. but agree there should be a way. not even sure rooting the phone would do it.

LED Notification

Does optimus 4x has led notification light?
No, the O4X doesn't have it.
And the app 'LG Notifications' doesn't seem to work for 4X yet. It worked fine on my 2X.
This app flashes the light in the buttons whenever there are new e-mail, SMS, missed calls and so on.
Great app, and hopefully they will get it working on the 4X soon.
didn't found anything about front-button-led notifications in settings..
all i found, is to turn on/off light on buttons, and timeout for them.
I am very sad, because the best device in the world (4X HD) does not have the LED, please we want a solution for that.
Good Software AND Hardware AND IPS WOW.
I think we(somebody) can use(make a rom) to bring the front button for led notification.
the button's have led's, then there must be a way to use them for notifications
Unfortunately no program of the market, active touch LED notification!
Install the app NoLed, it is very useful and works on 4X perfectly. Different kind of customization to suit your lifestyle, e.g. icon, color of led, time to turn on/off led. It saves you trouble to press the Power button to check whether there is email, SMS, missed call,..............in. case you miss the sound notifications.
There are also other features to save battery - notification timeout, dismiss with proximity sensor (dismiss notifications when phone is in pocket or upside down), etc.
Yep, nice app !
I installed this, but I don't get it! Surely you have to wake your screen up to see what you've missed? How is that different from what the lock screen shows you?
(Those apps that light the soft-keys look great, if you could individually light them, one for calls, one for messages, one for emails (Not sure if the phone could even light them one by one)

It works on my 4X perfectly, I even tried to add the Time yesterday and it pops up with the notification. No need to wake your screen up, that's the idea of NoLed! Look up the setting to see what you missed.
BTW, you can let the Time light up constantly but surely it will drain out your battery very fast.

Ambient display and security settings - possible undocumented feature

It appears that ambient display does not work when your screen lock setting is set to None.
I was showing a mate my Nexus 6 yesterday and started playing with a few settings. I noticed that all of a sudden my ambient display stopped working. I did some testing this morning and finally worked it out that when the screen lock setting is set to None, ambient display does not activate. Any notifications that come through stop appearing on the screen. Setting the screen lock setting to anything other than None ensures ambient display works once again.
1. Is this a known feature / situation for the N6 ?
2. Is anyone else experiencing the same behavior or is it just me ?
1. if you dont have a lockscreen then it cant show you notifications on it. duh, lol.
2. we all have known about this since before lollipop came out.
1. I see no reason why a notification could not be shown on the screen using ambient display even if I don't have a lock screen. It is not like I have actually turned the screen on yet.
2. And yet, when I tried searching for an answer to why my ambient display wasn't working, I found no mention of it at all, not in XDA or the web in general.
Thanks for clearing it up for me, it is clearly a feature of the phone.

if you dont have a lockscreen, then it has nothing to show the incoming message on. if no lockscreen, then it would just show in the status bar.
I understand your point simms22, but I think you may be missing mine. Does it have to be the lock screen that the notification is shown on when it arrives.
For example, msg arrive, screen turns on to show msg. If I do nothing then the screen turns off. If I haven't interacted with the screen, does the notification really need the lock screen to be displayed? I guess that I'm just not convinced that the lock screen is needed to display notifications when I pick my phone up, ie before I touch the screen. If I then interact with a notification then perform the interaction, but if I touch a part of the screen where is no notification, open the device.
The above would be mute if I pick the device up and press the power button to open the home screen.
I guess I look at things a little different, I design systems and interfaces for a living for the Dept of Defence.
I have found that the ambient display does not always activate when I pick the phone up, I'd say its about 90% reliable, have u found the same ?

yea, the way the code is written, there needs to be a lock screen to be displayed. i dont really use it anymore, but i found it to be around 90% as well.
Just to re-iterate, Ambient display is displaying the Lockscreen notifications, not SystemUI notifications, so to show the lockscreen notifications, Lockscreen must be on.

I totally agree. I upgraded from my 2013 Moto X, with Moto DIsplay, to the N6. I NEVER used a lock screen on the Motox, and enjoyed being able to just glance at the phone to know what was incoming.. its quite annoying that I can no longer get my notifications to show up on my screen without turning the phone on, and pulling the shade down. I'm on the computer all day, and have my phone setup next to me and use it to get a quick view of incoming work emails, with out taking my hands off the keyboard, or even stop typing for that matter.
If I would have known that the N6 was unable to work in this matter I would not have gotten it. I would have gone with the Moto X 2 instead.
Hi guys. Do you know any, preferably minimalistic, screen lock app that is compatible with ambient display? Have tried my fav Zui Locker with no luck.

I dont think it works with any.
That's what I was afraid of. Sticking with stock locker then since I love the new feature.

Notifications turn on screen

I have been searching looking for way to make this work with no solution.
I have disabled AOD since it is consuming battery heavily and wanted notifications to behave as on stock android where they turn screen on. My note 8 is receiving notifications and LED turns on, but screen doesn't. I have to manually turn it on to be able to see the lockscreen notification.
Is there any way to make this work?
+1
Facing same issue.
Having the same problem. Aod does not work anymore.

I use "Dynamic Notifications". It lights up notifications when screen is locked. There's a certain amount of customisation, including screen on time. Used it on many of my phones including Note 8.
Wait.. You want the screen to turn on for every notification?
I hate that... Some apps even ignore the settings either way.

Same here, that would drive me nuts if the screen turned on for every notification. It's bad enough the screen turns on everytime the phone is plugged in/unplugged from USB or from a wireless charger.
Shouren, you can try snoozy charger app to manage the plug/unplug screen on issue

Thanks. The rom I'm using is actually supposed to have that disabled but I don't think it works for wireless charging, only cable. I never never charge with the cable anymore. But whatever, I prefer not to install apps just to disable one minor thing.
I understand you, I also prefer wireless, but, it works with wireless too
There must be a build prop tweak or something but I can't seem to find one right now.
Maybe a PM to a nice dev and they could tell you where to look. Report for community if you figure it out

Missing notification LED... solutions?

I just bought a Redmi 9, but I discovered that it doesn't have a notification LED. It's really annoying not being able to see if the phone has notification just by looking at it. Are there solutions to this?
I tried the Always On Edge app and it does the trick, but unfortunately, not having an AMOLED display makes it drain too much battery for me...
Are there other solutions that don't kill the battery too much? How do you usually become aware of unread notification?
As far as i know there is a app for blinking with flashlight when u get a call or something, have used it on my Huawei.

use glimpse notifications, you can set the led flash to notify you of new notifications and use it to turn the screen on again and again at the set time for as long as u want after getting notifications and many more features, it's free on the google app store
I totaly forget that the flashlight blinking when call incoming is in the settings of the phone,no need for an app.Cheers!!!

Question Google clock timer not going off when screen off..

Hi,
Love my S21 Ultra, but I have one issue that im failing to solve.
I use Google Clock, and the alarm function works perfectly - never had it fail on me.
However the countdown function doesnt go off (ie, no sound or vibrate) if I leave it running in the background with the screen off.
If I turn the screen on after its supposed to have gone off, it then goes off, with a minus number of seconds on the screen.
Ive been through all the Samsung 'background app power saving' stuff, and made sure the Google Clock app is excluded (although if it was that id expect the alarm to fail too).
Handset is the 256Mb UK Three branded one, with latest official firmware, no rooting or anything like that.
Anyone come across this please?
thanks, George
How are the Do Not Dusturb and Sound settings during these issues?
Have you exempted Google clock to allow Notifications while sound is off or when DND is activated?
