Front camera doesn't focus (?) - Honor 9 Lite Questions & Answers

Hey, guys. I've received my M9L two weeks ago and I've noted the front camera doesn't seal. Anyone can say if it is a software or a hardware issue? I've tested Open Camera app and looks like factory app. Please, help me. I need to talk with the Huawei Store about that but I don't know if this can be the firmware version or what.

That might be because our front camera has a fixed focus ( for better selfies as they claim). So the camera will only focus on your face and nothing else.
If it's not even focusing on your face you might have to visit the service center( probably might be a hardware issue but who knows.)
Also try updating or rolling back updates too.

If it was a software problem, another camera app would not solve the problem? Anyway, I already have installed a update (8.0.0.133) and nothing changed.

So the camera is not even detecting your face?
If it defects it'll automatically focus on your face. Like I've told the camera will only focus on faces and nothing else.

It recognizes the face, but can't focus. The picture doesn't get out much, doesn't seem a 13 mp camera. And nothing like the reviews I have ever seen.

Then maybe it's the lighting but who knows and megapixels don't determine photo quality much. The camera is decent but not up to the mark as advertised specially in low lights.
All the reviews have taken photos in good lighting conditions.
Also try disabling beauty mode that might also help a bit

Yeah, I know that. I have record a video with frontal camera. As you can see, the camera does not focus on the book.

That's how the camera is made to work.
The camera will only ONLY focus properly on your face.
Nothing else matters to the front camera other than your face.
So all other objects might not be in focus. There's nothing wrong with your camera as much as I see . (Well who am I to judge ?)

Camera Focus Problem

EDIT: So, I did some more testing and the fault seems to be with the focus of the camera. Initially when you open the camera app it auto focuses and this then leaves me with an out of focus picture and touch to focus never actually changes anything. I tested Camera FV-5 and this app has an option to disable auto focus, allowing me to take a picture without the camera ever focusing, this takes a perfect picture but if I touch to focus it goes out of focus just like the stock camera.
Obviously it is faulty as it no longer makes that click when you open the camera app, well it does, but only like once every dozen times the camera is opened (still out of focus btw) ... Macro shots work perfectly, focus is spot on but anything at a distance of about more than a foot or two away just seems to blur.
Below are a few more shots that highlight the error:
.
It is more and more common failure in new HTC craphones.I have it in mine also.

Thanks for the reply .. So it's not faulty then? Just a big negative of having so few pixels, no matter how much light they let in?
IMO it is hardware problem.

Has anybody else had problems with blurry shots when not taking a picture of something close? I recently went to the coast for the day and decided to take some pictures from the cliffs and on the beach, all of which were just scenic pictures at distance (nothing close up or in particular that could/wanted to focus on) but they all came out blurry. I don't seem to have any issues when taking pictures of close up objects or when there's something in particular to focus on but anything else is just pathetic.
I compared them to my Sony digital camera from about 4 years ago the pictures were spot on compared to the One ... See a couple of examples below. I tried focusing on various parts aswell but still the pictures are terrible ... Does this sound like a fault with the camea or focusing part in particular, or is it just that the One takes terrible pictures when not close up?
Thanks for any input. (The ones in focus are from my digital camera and everything blurry is from the One)

I would honestly do more tests indoor and outdoor to see if its a hardware problem.
I was having focus problems too, and I thought the OIS should be working better.
Then i started holding the phone a bit closer to me when taking a photo making sure both hands are holding the phone, kind of like holding a regular camera.
Also take advantage of exposure/focus lock; then snap the photo. Once I starting holding the phone more like a camera my focus issues went away. This was most noticeable in lower light conditions when the shutter speed isn't as fast as outside. I think something is going on and the OIS is trying to compensate for movement.
I also drink tons of coffee so my hands get a bit shaky!

Lol, I don't have the caffeine issue but with regards to tests, I have done lotssssssssssss lol. Pictures I've taken close up, especially ones where I want to focus on something in particular, look good, but anything at distance or ones where I don't want to focus on a certain area, just a scenic shot, they all look blurry like the examples.

I'm 99% sure it's software related and that's based purely on a test I just did with a 3rd party camera app and the stock one. I took the same shot with both camera apps and did nothing but let it auto focus and take the shot, one looks fine, the other looks blurry ... Doesn't take much guess work to figure out by these results, that it must be software based because both pictures use the same hardware
Check these 3 pictures. One is a nice close up with the stock camera on Sense, which looks very good. The other two pics are the two mentioned earlier, as you can see, stock Sense camera is blurry and out of focus but the 3rd party one is much, much better ...
Both look like crap, sorry. No details, no sharpness.

They're not going to be full of detail, it's dull, I didn't adjust any settings, I didn't manually focus or adjust exposure and I took them from my room ... Through the window.
I didn't take them to capture detail, purely to show how two different camera apps using the same hardware, give completely different results when it comes to backgrounds not being blurred or out of focus. If it had been a nice day and scenic then the pictures would obviously have looked better but then my issue is with focus and blur on the Sense camera, not how little detail the HTC is capable of capturing when the conditions are anything but perfect.
My camera just seems to have issues staying focused, pictures aren't bad by any means though.
OP Edited.

I am on my 3rd HTC One M7 since April when I initially ordered. First two had gaps and poor build quality. I finally get a good build but have the same camera issue. Its all out of focus and bit blurred. I have reset to factory etc but no fix so its hardware problem. It's now on its way back for repair with P4U in the UK. Hopefully 4th time I will get a workable well built phone.
I seem to be experiencing the same issue. It didn't start happening until Sep. 14th. Did your issues start suddenly, or did your One always have this problem?
Here are some example shots:
Proper auto focus at a short distance
Improper auto focus from maybe 10 feet away
Improper auto focus from far away
And my phone issues, you can interview about the android4.2.2, perfect results, the focus is normal, close-range vision is normal, personal guess is driver problem, but no ability to solve, hope can help transplant drive.
please delete.

Photo quality seems awful on the 3t?

Sorry Back cam
The zoom is pathetic, I give it that. I'm visually impaired and frequently use the camera to read at a distance. Can't do it on this phone.

All phones are digital zoom to my knowledge. This is the worst camera for zoom I've ever had on a phone.
not sure why people are complaining on smartphone cameras expecting to provide SLR like features.
3T camera is not bad at all, in fact it is better than in my HTC 10

The iPhone with 2 cameras have optical zoom. So not all phones. Probably some huawei phones as well.
If you want clear zoom (for visually impaired) get a zoom lens that clips on.
As for fuzziness (this note is for OP) try fussing with the app. HQ mode etc.. Also is it low light or bright light?
get the google camera 4.2 apk very nice shoots

camera quality

I'm looking at this phone but I'm wondering just how the camera is. Perferably with the Google camera apk. Anyone have some samples with stock or gcam?
Let's just say the camera is not the strongest feature of the phone. I come from a p7 expecting to have the same quality but actually it's worst. Hopefully it's only a software problem
Im facing dust inside my rgb sensor camera and found that many have complained in lenovo forum that they are also facing same issue. Is anyone else facing the same please check both lenses by applying flash light at an angle in a dark room. If you are not having this issue then are you using any case for your phone or any type of cover.

Camera is not that much good. It's average. Using custom roms makes the camera even more pathetic. That's the reason why why I'm still on stock rom. Hope its only software issue.

Most laggy zoom ever

Am I the only one who is experiencing laggy zoom both in and out?
Rear camera is jumping from 1.0x to 1.2x, 1.4x etc. creating a laggy experience.
It's not a big deal while taking pictures, but if you are recording you can actually see that your footage is totally destroyed if you zoomed in while recording.
With front camera it's a little bit better, but it's only since it goes from 1.0x to 1.1x, 1.2x, 1.3x, it's still lacking some kind of animation to smooth it out.
Did I get a poor unit of Huawei P20 Pro or is it like this for everyone?
Also do someone know if Huawei is planning to fix it? Since return policy is valid for 14 days, if they won't fix that I am gonna return the phone.

I wouldn't call the zoom laggy, and I think they have done it this way so you can achieve your desired zoom level faster rather than have it smoothed out and be slow. You could probably download a camera app from the Playstore which would do the smooth zooming though.
Snapchat has the same problem. The zoom is laggy
It's because it's changing the camera to the telephoto lens from your regular lens. The third lens is just a monochrome lens.
Apparently this problem is fixed in the beta
Me too
I currently have this problem too. Instagram, Snapchat and even the official camera app zoom looks laggy and slow. Currently using firmware version 8.1.0.133
The same on 8.1.0.154. Is it possible to turn off all lenses excepting one which you want to use? I think it could fix the problem with zooming.

Question Defect or normal - ultra wide raw quality

Hi, bought the phone 2 days ago, because it's not with 888, it's not with curved display and has a ultra wide camera with AF and macro capabilities with raw support.
To my surprise, the quality of the raw file from the ultra wide is worse than from the periscope - there are some strange bright dots when you zoom in to 100%, which lead to overall bad quality of the ready image. I guess they are the phase focus pixels, but they shouldn't be visible without any heavy editing.
So, is it just me, or the problem is global, so I know how to proceed with this? I'm leaving a crop depicting the problem.
Are you sure the ultra wide angle has AF? but yeah it looks weird...

You are right, the Edge 20 review on GSMArena mentions the AF for wide angle. A good thing, but it's strange that the ultra wide angle pictures seem a bit blurry then. Did you try with Gcam?

Which Gcam version you use? Try enabling Sabre and see if it makes a difference.
I tried the latest bsg, but removed it, cause the results weren't satisfactory or better than using the stock app as a real camera.

Hey did you manage to solve this issue? Any suggestions for the lackluster RAW outputs from the stock camera app??
The battle is legendary. Still no success defeating the defect. If it is a demozaicing problem, Motorola should fix it.

THanks for the reply. I wonder how happy you are overall with the cameras? I've found that the front facing one is quite dark and has WB issues. In general the photos coming out of the stock camera seem riddled with artifacts and oversharpened.

Camera Is great as I see in reviews from owners and websites .
I don't even bother shooting in jpg, this is Motorola and they suck in camera performance and resolution logic.
But, I shoot raw, which is possible even with the selfie cam, and after a minute of editing I get sharp and impressive images, and that's why I bought it - the sensors itself are quite capable. If I find a solution to the problem with the ultrawide, the phone is a keeper...
