I come from the perspective of:
1. A US citizen working with orphan kids in Colombia. A Note 8, or probably from a battery standpoint, the unaffordable Note 9, would seem to make the most sense, or an iPhone 7 Plus, but I don't like IOS. I am considering the US Verizon SM-N950UZKAVZW, AT&T SM-N950UZKAATT, or the US unlocked unbranded SM-N950U1, which has the Snapdragon, and supports both CDMA and GSM and more bands than the others.
2. I like root, because it allows me to use apps cannot otherwise, use such as exploring the active bands available in certain areas, a real phone backup, etc., but it is not absolutely necessary. (With my Note 3, 4.4.2, I can easily root without tripping KNOX.)
3. I also like the idea of Samsung Pay and the way it works with NFC for credit card security.
Questions:
1. Can I root any of these three phones and still use Samsung Pay, etc.?
2. Does the N950U1 US unbranded, unlocked model also have KNOX that would get tripped?
3. How are OS updates handled on N950U1 US unbranded phone?

- From reading the forums, unless you use the AT&T-carrier-branded version, you will not be able to use VoLTE/HD Voice, VoWi-Fi, or carrier aggregation on the AT&T network, and you will get throttled data speeds.
- Verizon only states that HD Voice will not work unless both parties have VoLTE/HD Voice enabled, both have LTE, and are both on the Verizon network. I don't see language about it being a Verizon-branded phone.
- Verizon states HD Voice needs to be activated before you can activate VoWi-Fi, and that you can tell it to use Wi-Fi if available, and that you can make and receive calls from the US for free as though you were there.
?Does this mean you can send and receive free US calls to and from non-Verizon endpoints over VoWi-Fi?

1. AFAIK no, when you root Knox is tripped so you can say goodbye to Samsung Pay (though it seems that some people found a way to keep using it)
2. All Samsung devices have Knox if they're shipped with Android 4.3+
3. I can't answer to that question as I have the SM-N950F/DS
4. Being French I don't know how US carriers handle VoWiFi, VoLTE and HD voice.

If your on bootloader v4 u cant root right now....
If u have a us model they all have snapdragons so you cant use android pay ever again if u root..... hope it helps.

That is very helpful because I didn't know if I could get around that with the US unlocked model from Samsung or not. It looks like no root then. I assume I can still side load apks without causing an issue?
One thing is sure, the Exynos won't be running the CDMA bands. I would also imagine Samsung pay either doesn't work with the a rooted international Exynos, and/or there are other gotchas that make it equally unattractive to use domestically.
Does the Exynos run the same apks as the SnapDragon from the play store or are they compiled differently?
Both models use the same apks, no problem there, as for rooted devices, only certain apps do not work when they detect root

Out of curiosity, can you root an Exynos, the unroot it later, and use Samsung pay, or do you have the same issue of tripping KNOX, or doesn't the Exynos do Samsung Pay?
I understand not allowing Samsung Pay on a rooted phone. The part I don't get is why when you restore everything back to original that they don't allow KNOX to be restored as well.
Well, the exynos variant is the easier rootable one, but KNOX is irreversible, it is a physical electonic fuse, or e-fuse, in any samsung device, it is a flag to indicate that the device has been tampered with, therefore no longer 100% safe by samsung's standards, unrooting will not get back to 0x0, (0x1 indicates that something has been changed), so, no samsung pay or secure folder will be available once knox has been tripped

Got it! Then I won't be rooting the new one for now, and would be better off going with a SnapDragon where I can get a phone that will do both CDMA and GSM, and leverage Qualcomm's Quick Charge as well.

Anyone know if the exynos version would work on verizon? I assume that that it would but the 1x and 3g would not. lol, i would be ok with that if i also go root and TWRP.

i think this is the place to buy it. Since they will open it up and use one of their sims to make 5 minutes of calls before sending it to us, so it doesn't lock up once we get it.

I dont think you will be able to use it to make phone calls or msg because verizon use a CDMA network for this and the exynos version doesnt have this. Just my guess.
Samsung's soc never supports cdma (big Q owns the patents) so that's why the rest of the world who aren't on cdma gets the exynos versions

That's not true at all, my Galaxy Tab S2 is an Exynos and runs on Verizon LTE., and the galaxy S6 was an Exynos 7420 on Verizon.
Oh I stand corrected. I knew the tablets were supported but figured since you don't make calls from them, it wouldn't need cdma. In either case, unless it's made for Verizon, the exynos versions won't natively support Verizon.
The FCC filing shows it support the Verizon LTE bands, but no CDMA bands.
It would probably work for data but I am not sure if it would work for calls, unless they implement VOLTE on the international version for Verizon.
Guys it's best to wait for the North American unlocked version (Qualcomm chip) to become available in a couple of weeks or so.
It will definitely work on both Verizon and Sprint and their MVNOs.
I can see bhphotovideo taking preorders for it already, and the page is setup on bestbuy. This is the S8 version I'm gonna go for. Downside is it will cost you a little more, but it is worth it to me to know I can use it on all US carriers.
Edit: looks like bhphoto added the model numbers for their preorders as "SM-G950F" and "SM-G955F", which is the same as the European/global GSM version. So that is Exynos chipset powered, and it's a no go for CDMA guys.
The plus on this model is it gets the software updates more quickly than the US unlocked model. (This is still speculation based on Samsung not updating SM-G930U to Android 7 for months while the SM-G930F and the US carrier models already received their updates.)

Unlocked as in "unlocked for all carriers" (or "sim free" is what Samsung UK calls their SM-G95*F versions). But I wouldn't be surprised if the bootloader is also unlocked.
My guess, even with the unlocked (unencrypted) bootloader, is once you flash a custom ROM/recovery it will still trip the Samsung Knox binary counter and void the warranty. This is just speculation based on Samsung's devices in the past. We have to wait until someone gets their hand on the US unlocked version.

I have the exynos s7 i bought from B&H in US. on verizon CDMA won't connect, but if you are in a region with VOLTE and you don't travel within US, it should be fine.
all the international versions have much better support if you are on ATT/Tmobile where GSM is the "3g/crippled 4g" I left verizon for Tmobile just to get better support for Exynos.
now... i didn't check validity of the site above, but it gives u an idea. i just wanted to chime in.
Exynos has much better power management IMO. my wife's phone is S7 tmobile variant, and when i was using s7 Exynos, my battery life was BETTER AND i use the phone way more than her throughout the day.
going to, i actually bought s8 TMobile this time... just so i can use samsung pay... samsung pay will work if you modify the CSC and install spay/framework, but guess i'm getting old and getting lazy

1. less bloat, I say less, because Exynos versions come with all kinds of CSCs from all over the world. and depending on where it came from... you'll see it installing regional specific apps on your initial boot. 1 year i had a phone with Arab CSC and it installed bunch of apps made for Arabs... on another phone i had a UK CSC and it installed all kinds of UK news apps.

I read it I just think its a dumb GSM phone for people that have a dumb CDMA phone provider. LTE only is not a solution Verizon people simply need Verizon phones. Just like Sprint people need Sprint phones. Getting international GSM phones for use on CDMA service providers is stupid. Thats one reason CDMA is crap compared to GSM. Unlocked phones like some apple and moto and rare samsung are the best solution. Best Buy will have the unlocked snapdragon available in 2 weeks for $725/$825

You dont need regular calls? You are going LTE only and hoping you dont miss any calls? If you are using hangouts for calls and don't need cellular phone calls then go get one. Ebay, amazon, they have them for sale, forget warranty unless you want a huge hassle.

I understand everything. I was wondering who has done it in the past. Everyone in my company with the latest update from Verizon has seen their CDMA coverage disappear. Where they once had CDMA service, they now have none. Verizon seem to really be pushing the VoLTE. I've had phones where i have disabled all non 4g bands, because i didn't like it switching, and it actually worked better for me. The main reason i ask is because the international version has root and TWRP. Hopefully the US version will get root, but i don't think we'll every get an unlocked bootloader. The verizon version is already sim unlocked, so i'm not looking for more sim unlocked phones that don't have root.

Thank you, that is what I need to know. Now what about getting a S8 or S8 Plus instead? Are those rootable? I mean does it even matter any more? The only thing I really want root for is Youtube Ad Block, but what the crap, mine as well just pay 10 bucks a month and get Youtube Red and allow my phone to update it self all the time.

from what I hear it is possible to root the s8, but it limits your max battery charge to 80%? kinda a **** trade off if you ask me.
so I'm like you I thought I must have root, my last android was a Nexus with a completely unlocked boot loader and I flashed custom roms when I tired of my current rom. that was four years ago and I've been jailbroke iOS since. do you still need root?
most people will say no. if they say absolutely the main arguments I've heard are for xposed(which doesn't even work on android 7) and viper4android (or some similar name, a sound tweak I think) besides those two, removing bloatware, and hosts file ad blocking.
my personal experience: I will be giving up an unlocked boot loader by purchasing the note 8. this mean no custom roms. I haven't given up hope for a future possible root method, but I am willing to accept that it may never come or when it does we can only charge to 80% or something else ridiculous. I don't need root, I would like it, but I will compromise.

The issue is that the Snapdragons have locked bootloaders but you need a SD version to use the Sprint network. It doesn't matter if you buy a Note 8 or an S8, the issue with the locked bootloader is the same.
For me personally, I need root because a lot of the apps I have use root. If you only wanted to block ads on YouTube, it's probably unnecessary and far more hassle than it's worth.

Sorry, I can't provide any guidance in this area. I'm in Australia and don't have experience with the inclusions/exclusions on specific American networks such as Sprint. I do know they use CDMA technology, which the Exynos SoC doesn't support.
Hopefully, one of the other enlightened souls on this forum can help you with this question.

The Sprint Version will cut out the download booster and hot spot unless your plan includes it but include calling plus features which include their version of the Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling for surfing over calls....but we already have that with Wi-Fi calling...Sprint also has Bloat software such as VVM but I install Google Voice for voicmail...it is up to you...at this point I have found no function lost.

That is extremely important. Do I have this right? If I buy the unlocked version. Can I surf the internet while on the phone with the unlocked version from Amazon or Samsung or do I need to buy the Spring Version?
Am I understanding that right or did you mean something else?

When I called my wife on Wi-Fi Calling i was able to surf the web as well...I'll double check tomorrow when she is awake though
I have the unlocked version arriving soon and I will be using it with sprint. (With the free 1 year promo)
AFIK only the sprint and unlocked versions are whitelisted to work on sprint. Any other snapdragon models you will need to request a manual request to add your IMEI to the sprint database.
And I believe the Exynos models isn't compatible with CDMA at all, something with licensing or patent issues with Qualcomm.

Oh I mean not on wifi - calling I am just talking about 4G LTE. I mean I have the note 3 right now. LOL. I know super old. I can talk on the cell network 4G LTE and surf the internet at the same time. Can you do that with the Unlocked Version and the Sprint Version or one or the other?

Are you serious. I will be giving up call over data? WHY? Is this like that for Verizon and AT&T? Have they all lost call over data or do they just not want you to be able to do it?
Should I keep my Note 3 for that very reason?
Does any phone like the S8 or S8 Plus have call over data?

Oh my goodness, looks like my note 3 has two antennas and the newer phones have only 1. that is why i can do both. Why would they make the service worse?

I recently purchased 4 brand new sprint note 8's from Ebay (for a small company). In hindsight I think I should of opted for the unlocked version but I'm here now. My question is what would it take to unlock the phones and flash with unlocked software? I ask because I'm a little PO'ed that sprint takes away a few features native to Samsung (looking at you Hyia caller id). There's apps that can take care of all that, but that's besides the point.
I'm looking for pro's and cons to what that would do. Coming from a rooted S6 and having played with the note 8 I didn't see any reason to root until now. But I think if I root it locks me out of other features? Samsung Pay? And sprint won't fix if I make any insurance claim?
Is there any way to go through all that and then turn root back off? Again, coming from the S6 as my last bit of rooting experience (couldn't turn knox counter off, so Samsung pay never worked....).
Any suggestions?

Search function in the forum. Look for carrier switching. Are you using them for sprint?
If you go to unlocked XXA you will get the other features but loose wifi-calling and sprint calling plus.
You can download the new sprint zone form play store now so thats a non issue.
If you understand how to put together your own flash-able rom you could pull the stuff for sprint and add to xxa and get both parts but its not something ive seen floating around here.
Ultimately sprint has a paid version of Samsung feature for the caller id part, if thats the only thing you want there are a ton of other free alternative. (soft fix) Sprint isn't going to fix a personal issue you have with their device setup lol, they charge for premium caller id and Samsung/sprint wont change that part, most carriers charge for it as its "premium"
I have a optimized rom for the note 8 (sprint users) but you will be limited to 80% battery charge, spay and secure folder are broken. With the new safestrap recovery you can atleast un-root and re-root from the device to get around apps that scan for root and be able to use them, with my custom rom having edits in /system you will never achieve spay etc , this is reversible by just odin to stock software again and back to stock, the current root methods do not effect knox or warranty.

What is the preferred Samsung Note 8 model for obtaining root if you are in the US? In my area, AT&T(GSM) and Verizon(CDMA) are the two main carriers. I would perfer to have a phone which is unlocked for both network types(GSM/CDMA). I'm not tied down in a contract so I plan on buy from Amazon so I can continue without being in contract. Thank You!

Coming from a totally unlocked Note 4 back in February, I thought that I would really need root access on my Note 8. But with using Samsung themes to get the system color I wanted, then using Nova Launcher to get the icon look. And using notSABS for ad blocking. I can honestly say that with the Note 8, I do not need root access. Yes having full access of MY phone should be MY choice, but I'm ok with it.
My wife and I have the SM-N950U from Xfinity and we love them. For the price of their service you can't beat them. We just pay by the gig and we have never used more than 1 GB of data. So if we didn't get the phones from them and get insurance, we would only be paying $12/month for 2 lines.(up to 5 lines)

If you want to root, there is a big drawback with snapdaragons, after rooting, your batt will only charge 80%, in any case snap or exynos, samsung pay will no longer work, and, after rooting, no OTA firmware updates will show for download
I would stay away from US carriers phones. get the international version instead.
Once you root, you lose the chance of using Samsung Pay and SecureFolder for the rest of the phone's life. Un-rooting won't get them to work.
It is up to you to decide. For me, I root because I need Adaway, Titanium Backup, TWRP. Yes, I love SecureFolder but I love the benefits of root capabilities more.

I have read it's better to keep your battery charged between 20% to 80% for the best battery life, so would that be a good thing?

I don't ever plan on using Samsung Pay, so no issue there, I'm unaware of SecureFolder. What model and what carrier do you have? CDMA or GSM? I have read that the exynos phones cell radio or tower reception doesn't work as well in the US. Have you noticed any issues with that or with WIFI? Any advice on getting the best deal on one?
I would recommend that you purchase the US Unlocked Variant, which is available in the US.
I used to have the U version on ATT. I changed to an unlocked dual SIM 950FD. It cost $600 on eBay instead of $900+ for the US variant. I notice ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between the two. No data speed difference, nothing. Same software, same everything. And I update the rom regularly on sammobile. Plus I have the dual SIM option. So, same thing $300 cheaper.
Oh and lests not forget: no bloatware..
I'm looking at getting a new phone from Verizon and I use the Skvalex call recording app to record all my company calls. Unfortunately the only way to use the good recording quality where it records both sides from the in/out on the routing table on any of the latest android OS fw is to have root kernel access. Can this phone currently be rooted with latest OTA from Verizon if I purchase this phone ?
If not, can someone point me in the direction of one of the phones Verizon sells (or one I can get at Best Buy/Amazon) at a reasonable price? It's been a long time since I rooted a phone as I have had the same Moto Z Force from Verizon for about 4 years now. Great phone just has issues with battery life after a year and data storage is not big enough.

then on top of that there's the (apparent) deal Samsung agreed with US carriers, no Samsung phones for the US and Canadian markets have unlockable bootloaders. only official Samsung firmware images can flashed. T-Mobile will let you unlock the bootloader when you've paid for the phone, AT&T too... Verizon never will!
I'd say buy an imported 4G version the SM-G780G seeing as 5G on Verizon is mmwave (only Samsung's made for Verizon even support that). but check with Verizon first if they'll let use it. I've heard some weird things about phones needing to approved to use on some carriers there.

That really sucks. I always thought the non-branded / non carrier motorola phones could have their BL unlocked through motorola. I will look into the imported 4g version but I'm really wanting to take advantage of the 5g data speeds. I was just hoping for a root method to do some tweaking and unbloating to some of the files.

AFAIK Motorola phones can be unlocked, it's just Samsung that's doing this and most people think it's to keep the carriers happy.
Samsung has ants up their ass over competing with apple so they probably made this agreement as extra incentive to get picked up by more carriers. that's a guess though.
I'm leaning towards getting a pixel 6... direct from google. I'm not giving samsung any more of my money over them having their head so far up the carriers asses I can't tell where samsung ends and the carrier begins.
