Rattling Noise from Camera - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I just got my Note9 not more than a month ago and I'm hearing a loud rattling noise from the rear cameras when I shake the phone slightly. I know that cameras with OIS does this, but even with the camera app open, the rattle remains, just a tad bit quieter.
I've also noticed that the cameras seems to move quite violently internally when switching from Auto to Live Focus mode and vice versa.
What could be the reason for this issue?
Thanks.

There is no issue, that is normal. I notice the same with my mate 10 pro. Your phone is fine.

My phone makes a very loud rattle noise near the cameras when I shake it. Starting last night, when I use Live Focus or the 2x zoom, I get a really loud buzzing and vibrating coming from the top ear piece and the camera will not focus (pictures look absolutely terrible). I called Samsung last night and they used Samsung Tutor to mirror my screen and I wish I could have recorded the girl's reaction when seeing the photo quality. Unfortunately, I have to send it back to Samsung for repair. Sucks.

You explained your problem in such a way that you literally answered your first question.
You shake the phone and you hear a rattle. You equated that to the mechanism that allows OIS.
You open the camera app and you still hear it only quieter. Well that's because the mechanism is now being controlled by the camera app so it's trying to keep it stable and centered.
The camera module is pretty small so the force of shaking the phone is bound to make it make some noise.
When you switch modes the aperture is closing opening and moving on it's axis slightly. So it makes some noise if you are listening but it's hard to gauge your definition of "violently" when it's so small and we can't see your device.
Everything sounds normal.

Would be interesting to know if a shock or drop can cause damage to the camera mechanism more now on this note than the previous models.

It's a moving part so it's very possible. Or it just fails with age.

When removing the S Pen, the rattling noise changes slightly but doesn't decrease.

Huh, from my past experience with phones with OIS, the rattle would always completely go away when the camera app is launched.
I'll try to get some video of the cameras moving around when switching from Auto to Live Focus and vice versa

Not sure how you did that video, but it looked cool. Looked like an eye was there. Lol
Joking aside., Removed my S-Pen and shaked my phone , I could here a slight rattle, then with the S-Pen still removed I launched the camera app, and there was no rattling at all. So maybe yours is loose? Or maybe it's within tolerance levels. Hard to say without looking at the technical manual for this phone.

That's the image stabilizer module. It's supposed to move. If you lunch the camera and shake the phone again you'll notice you don't hear the sound.

So, any news on this? I have the same problem, never dropped the phone but have this rattling sound, and it never seems to finish focus. Either in Live Focus or over 2.0x zoom pics in auto mode.
I will send it over for repair, but don't know how much will cost or take to fix it... Any news about that.?

I have this issue as well (unlocked model).
I had a similar issue on my note 5 (that model also produced a "buzzing" noise as the OIS mechanical, possibly MEMS based, system itself stabilized).
My Note 9 does this as well, consistent with the behavior in this thread and reported elsewhere on the internet . There are plenty of Youtube videos that accurately reproduce the problem.
It seems to be a common problem, although I admit I did not notice it when I first started using my phone.
I admit, the first time I noticed it was after a moderate drop. I have a rugged case (a Supcase, one of only a handful of rugged Note 9 cases that come with a built in screen protector).
I dropped the phone from 2~3 feet, and the phone landed on or near the corner, meaning it translated a lot of the impulse of the impact into the phone and the case's chassis.
That was when I first noticed the rattling. I picked up the phone and shook it to hear if there was anything wrong and noticed the rattling. It may be that this was simply the first time I actually noticed the noise and that it was always there, but its also possible that the impact of that fall caused some component of the OIS system to come loose or break.
It would be nice to hear from Samsung about this.
To reiterate:
i noticed this on my super old Note 5. Same exact sort of behavior with the camera, although that one produced the known buzzing/hissing noise associated with the OIS system, itself, stabilizing (also a visible distortion in the image displayed as the system came into balance).
My suspicion is that this is probably similar to the problem with the Note 5. Annoying. Odd for a flagship. Scary. Especially considering the price. AND.... critically.... possibly something that may become worse over time.
No obvious functionality issues.
One thing that might help would be an app or service that will provide a more thorough diagnostic of the camera sensor. Whatever that entails. Running all systems through their range of calibration and functionality to detect any problems.
Given the IP68 rating, I would be surprised if a drop from 2-3 feet with a known quantity rugged case would not be a warranty issue if the camera were damaged in some way.
my biggest concern is that if the, presumably OIS system, is allowed to wobble around to an extent that *sounds* like movement on the order of ~0.5-1.0 mm (which is miles of movement in this type of application), will this result in long term damage. If, every time I take a step, the sensor is wobbling back and forth.... 10s or hundreds of thousands of times... up and down every time I jump in and out of my car (I literally jump, its a big vehicle).... will these things reduce the lifespan of the camera as a result of this "looseness"?
On a side note if you did not buy your Note 9 from Samsung.com directly you cannot ever forever sign up for Samsung Premium care.
They absolutely will not, under any circumstances, allow you to sign up for their premium insurance plan, even if you purchased the device from Att or Verizon or T-mobile.... Even if you bought it yesterday. Even if you go to Best Buy and let someone look at the pone and verify that its not damaged.
no possibility. So its 100% Asurion and the warranty.
If you have ever tried to replace a Note with Asurion, you know that they typically do not provide direct replacements. Instead they will provide you with the newest top-tier S-phone. Either because they don't ever have enough refurb Note devices, or because the Note is too expensive, wholesale. Even Samsung has had issues with Note replacements through warranty or insurance.

I sent mine off to Samsung and should have it back this week. They didn’t really ask any questions or seem very concerned, but I rarely get anyone that can speak or understand English. Their lack of concern and customer service throughout this issue has been very disappointing.

Camera makes clicking sound??

Since day one i noticed that the camera makes a clicking sound when it focuses or when its focused. After testing a bit it seems like the camera is hitting the the plastic/glass that is covering the lens.
Is this just me or other people have this as well? I would have cared less but today i made some videos is quite areas and when you manually focus you can hear the camera hitting the plastic/glass and the fact that the auto focus is not suttle but very jumpy. The clicking sound gets recorded which is really annoying.
It's the auto focus. Many other phones do that to.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
Yes i know its the auto focus, it just really annoying because that noise gets recorded as well.
My SGS never did it so this seems odd, can anyone confirm there does this so i don't think its a defect?
I'm curious what kind of testing you did because as far as I can tell, the camera is just like any other phone camera in that it has no mechanisms that control focus other than software.
Yea, the sound is generated by the software

not oh well, if its a defect then i will go exchange it. But if its normal then i guess i will have to live with it.
I'm not talking about the shutter sound its when you focus that when i hear the noise as it focuses the lens.
Mine does the same unfortunately. Maybe it is a thing with the majority of the vivids?
I just went to the ATT store to see if this is just a problem with a few phones. The display model did the same thing. I guess I am not too worried as you really do not need to manually focus while taking a video, as this would be the only way the noise would effect anything.
yeah i confirmed with a friends raider same results. Sad really that a $600 device would have this issue.

It bugs me, but I guess I just won't take videos and manually focus. Other than that it is most certainly the best android device I have owned.
Yeah, just tested it on mine too. Agreed, that a $600 device shouldnt have that problem. It just surprised me just how loud the noise actually is...
The refocusing sound IS software generated. If you are running RumRaider, a user posted a camera.apk that does not have the software refocusing sound. The Actual refocusing lens make a very faint sound that is barely audible.

Turn the phone around and watch the camera while you focus. It most certainly looks like it is hitting the glass which is what makes it click. It is indeed faint, but when recording videos it is highly audible.

You probably can't without root access since you need to replace the camera.apk in the system folder.

I don't think its actually hitting the front lens, it's just the lens inside moving as you would with any regular camera. Its not any design flaw that affects the longevity of the camera.

The loud refocusing sound is software generated to make it sound like a normal camera, the faint one that you hear is the actual lens trying to refocus. Truthfully I wouldn't be too worried as I hear the same refocusing sound from other phones camera that has the capability to focus.
Hello,
I can hear on mine phone the same thing what you describing. But is not so loud. Spoken with HTC support and they said that this sound is normal. So our phones are safe.
I have the same issue with my HTC Raider

My Raider makes the annoying lens focusing sound as well. It's not the shutter sound. My EVO 3D never has this kind of issue when recording.
I've recorded a short video using my Raider to demonstrate the lens mechanical focusing sound. Here's the link: youtube.com/watch?v=lh7m5JPhpBU
Note: the sound is much quieter on Youtube than viewing the original file on my computer. I think Youtube somehow manage to reduce the noise. But that's not the solution, obviously.
Edit: Here's another video a guy shot using HTC Vivid (Raider/Holiday) on Youtube. Link: (youtube.com/watch?v=6xaV8CzPeq8&list=PLF12EB9E9EA26EE3A&index=8&feature=plpp_video).
If you jump to 1:02 through 1:32, you'll hear the "clicking" sound when the lens is trying to focus.

Yeah. I played with the S5 at Best Buy today and confirmed it wasn't just mine. The S5's camera is much more audible than the S4, Note 3's cameras. Very annoying.
It has image stabilization, that causes it to rattle. My nexus 5 is the same way.

You didn't notice it your S4 because it didn't do it. It's a byproduct of image stabilization, which the S4 didn't do, but the S5 does.
It's not a defect, there is nothing to fix, it's just how it is.

that's a shame.. because it makes it seem like some cheap plastic parts moving inside if somebody notices. Bad manufacturing process by Samsung IMO. and image stabilization? As far as I know there is no physical optical image stabilization on the S5, it just has the software stabilization. The odd thing is that the rattle happens only when the camera is not in use. When I open the Camera app, the rattling is gone.
I don't kmow, I just assumed it was ois like everyone else does it. If not, then I'm not sure where the rattle is coming from. My nexus 5 makes a lot more noise when shaken than the S5 does.

Have not noticed this yet. Ha Ha now when shaking it slightly I do hear a little rattle. These types of things usually bother me, but if it has a purpose I don't think it will.
It's in my pocket most times staying very quiet lol.
I didn't even notice until I read this post. My phone is in an Otter box defender case, so its mostly quiet.

I had to shake the crap out of it right next to my ear to hear it. I do not hear it just with normal use of the phone though. I try not to shake my phone that much

My wife has a 1500.00 Digital SLR with image stabalization, guess what same rattle, that's how it work, nothing for Sammy to address.
This seems to be going around/asked even on other forums with people thinking their phone is broken or something wrong. Nothing is wrong, it's b/c of image stabilization, even high end cameras have a similar rattle.

No... the rattle is the lens elements not image stabilization it doesn't have it it has software IS which wouldn't warrant camera rattle. It's the 6 lens elements that make the noise and it should be loud like some people are saying. Mines is loud to the point of the vibrate making a terrible noise. My other s5 doesn't do this thus it being a defect of sorts. I am a photographer and also have a dslr with a lens that has IS so I know as well...

Dual camera won't focus, makes crackling sound (water damage?)

Last Tuesday my phone got wet while on a bicycle ride where it started to rain. The phone got wet enough that it started to randomly jump to different screens. I turned it off and put it in my pocket. Once I got home and dried the phone it seemed fine, and in fact the next day used the dual cameras to take a pic with no problem. There seems to be no water damge indicator in the dual flash.
Today tried to take a picture using the dual cameras and immediately got this crackling sound and the cameras wouldn't focus. I've done a search and couldn't find this exact problem elsewhere. The best way to understand what the cameras are doing is to show a video taken with them:
https://youtu.be/rms54f8O4vA
You can both see the inability of the cameras to focus and hear the crackling sound they make while trying to focus.
If I shift to the front facing camera it works just fine.
What to do? are the dual cameras kaput?
No one huh

S10 Rattle

Hi All!
Need to get some opinion from all of you.
I have the Galaxy S10 for a month, but juts noticed htis a couple of minutes ago.
When holding the phone as usual, facing to me, and shake it front and back, I can hear a very clear rattle on the area of the cameras.
If I open the camera app and try to shake it the same way, the rattle is almost gone.
Never noticed this till today.
Does this happens on your S10?
It's something to do with the camera. I remember on my s8 the viewfinder would be sometimes unfocused until I shook the camera
My 10 does not have any focusing issues.
Just wondering about the ratlle, since I a«haven't really noticed it before.
I've shook mine like crazy and haven't been able to hear a rattle.
Probably the gyro (ois) on the rear camera.
Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
Its the camera's. Your just shaking the lens in and out. Its normal, mine does it, wifes does is, old s9 and s7 did it. As long as the zoom does not get stuck when you open the app your fine. If you have to shake it to get focus or zoom to work I would get a replacement. Had to have wife old s6 replaced for this reason.

You're right. I can't hear it from side to side, but shaking front to back, it's very noticable.
Its optical image stabilization.
Any phone with ois will rattle.. be it iphone or lg.
The camera lens can move freely when camera app isnt opened and hence it rattles with shaken
When camera is opened, ois kicks in to remove shaking and hence it wont rattle anymore..
I was scared a bit when i heard it first time on my galaxy s6.. but apparently its a common thing..
My Note 10 plus rattles and its quite noticable. A slight shake causes loud rattle noise. Is it normal or not????
These are absolutely normal.

Question My phone started to rattle...

Hey all, It's a strange situation, but I just noticed that my phone rattles... By saying that I mean there is sound of some loose component from the inside while gently moving/shaking the phone.
Probably it wasn't the case since day 1 because I would notice it earlier during phone call or something.
Important facts:
1. I did not drop my phone (it's less than two weeks in my hands)
2. The noise do not come from buttons / lenses
3. It looks like everything is working, but this sound isn't optimistic.
There is a link for short video:

Should I be worried? I never had such situation with any phone.
