Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Australian Thread - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

There was an Aussie thread for the S8, so thought would start one for Aussie users of the Note 9.
Anything and everything...
Enjoy
I have the Note 9 from Telstra, I preordered the Ocean Blue 512B model and loving it. I haven't rooted or custom flashed this, and I don't think I will this time. I normally root every device I own. So far the only thing I miss is AdAway, but am using DNS66 for blocking adverts.
I have an Otterbox Symetry case, but no screen protector yet.

512Gb Ocean Blue from Optus here.
Was considering flashing the stock XSA firmware - but not sure whether it will get updates that much faster than carrier branded ones.
Anyone already got the latest Sep update (with the camera improvements)?

Black 512gb model from JB hi-fi I am contemplating rooting, but I have swift installer and adhell3 along with debloated. Only reason I'll root is for better battery life and optimisation. I'm also wondering if anyone has gotten the Sept update.

Nothing yet, still on N960FXXU1ARH2 / N960FOXM1ARGD / N960FXXU1ARGC with Telstra. 1 August 2018 Security Patch level.

It's too late for me to root mine. I refuse to backup my apps and data to any cloud storage and there's no chance of Helium doing what it used to for non-rooted phones on this current generation so bugger it.

Telstra 512gb black here. Using bare case be sure I like my phones slim. Using square home 2 launcher.
Came from htc u11. Always root but I have to admit that Samsung have really buttoned this phone up.
I've even ditched several apps that I've used for ages and give back to stock. Examples are textra, true phone and solid explorer all now dropped for stock feature rich apps.
Still using a+ glaaerh abc sh2 launcher though.

Samsung australia 512gb black

Not all updates are a positive step forward. If the phone does what it needs to for now, don't be in such a hurry. Wait for others to be the guinea pigs before you jump on board.
Seriously, being an upgrade junkie might be instantly gratifying at the time of downloading but it can also be a painful experience too.

Never heard of it

Got Whitestone Dome screen protector yesterday.

512GB Ocean Blue since the launch day. Waiting for September Security Patch. With Optus right now, tried flashing XSA by unlocing bootloader but it stays OPS no matter what!
Anyone else having any luck?

Optus, Ocean Blue 512gb pre-order.
Rocking the Whitestone Dome screen protector and the included Samsung clear case at the moment.
Love it.
Just downloading the September security & camera update via OTA now.

Which telco are you with? Nothing yet for Telstra. But SamMobile shows its out for Optus and Vodafone.

Optus.
Yeah, surprised there's no update for the XSA variant.

512gb ocean blue here given by my wife who won it in a company raffle. Was using a Note 8 and that went to her. She prefers android over the company iPhone. Am using Optus SIM from the office

Both NZ and AU public version are getting the update now.
N960FXXU2ARI9/N960FOXM2ARI7/N960FXXU2ARI4

Telstra Note 9, updated this evening to N960FXXS2ARJ2 with 1 Octobe 2018 Security patch

Marshmellow coming in January 2016

It will probably take longer for vzw versions, but at least we know the order it is being released as well as approximate time.
Wonderful, us VZW guys aren't even on the list. Thanks Obama

I haven't seen anything further. But I did install the free Marshmallow theme from the theme store.
One of my friends received Android 6.0 on his Boost Mobile LG Stylo today. Not bad for a $179 phone!
i see marshmallow has been out for a bit now for the s6 edge. how is there no tar for those of us who would like to try it out?

Google does the update and then sends it to Samsung for testing. IF Samsung decides the update is worthy and fits into their business plan for the life of the phone, they will test the update and correct things that are specific to the S6. IF that is completed then they send the update to Verizon, who in turn, decides if it fits in their business plan and the planned end of life for the product. If Verizon decides to pass it along then they update the code with their specifics and then they release it to the phones.
All of that has to go good before we knaves might see an update.
Unfortunately Android updates and timeline does not fit into the end of life plans for phones by the carriers. That is why we usually only get one or two updates.
Just saw this while searching online tonight.

Don't suppose anyone's heard anything for us VZW guys in terms of getting any updates, have they? About to list my phone on swappa and try to get something else... Not having root access or the ability to even really play with my phone is making this phone kinda boring to me. That and i'm not as much of a fan of the edge screen as I thought i'd be

If you do get a new phone I strongly suggest you get the Nexus 6. A bunch of support and you can unlock the boot loader and get any ROM you want it's awesome. I've been loving mine!

Yeah it's a catch between the nexus 6 and the turbo 2 if I decide to move away. The turbo 2 in terms of hardware is slightly superior, but unfortunately it seems like it's suffering the same fate as my current phone

Another bit of a tease http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/02/16/samsung_starts_marshmallow_upgrades/

So is note 7 Rom developing coming to am end?

Just wanted to see if devs are still going to be developing for this device with all the issues that are STILL happening apparently. It's such a shame because I absolutely love this phone. TEKs and OVERDRIVE roms looked real promising. I would just to keep a phone for 2 years if of developing is going to die off.
well considering a 2nd recall by samsung will most likely happen within the next few days according to t-mo. i would say the development for the n7 is done period. i got a feeling the n7 won't be back on the market after this either. samsung will probably scrap em all and move on to the s8 or even the note8 which will most likely need to be renamed as this whole thing has literally damaged the notes name.

A true bummer, I really don't want another phone but I guess I don't have a choice. Back to a note 4 I guess until a note 8 gets released which might not even happen. I've been a note holder since the note 2 (except a note5 which I wasnt impressed with)

The Note4 is my daily driver again, took back my replacement Note 7 yesterday.
It's basically got all the functionality where it really matters, the S-Pen.
The other features that were heavily marketed were of no consequence to me.
I definitely notice the difference between the two as for overall performance, but, it's not an awful experience by any stretch.
Throw your ROM of choice on the Note4 & ya got yourself a very comparable experience.

My phone before this was actually a note 4 and the only reason I went to a note 7 was because my phone was stolen. I was running abstrak rom (now discontinued). I'm probably going to see what mm roms they have for it now. Since I have to purchase another note 4, it will probably be on mm and I dont even know if it's rootable. My old note 3 and 4 were excellent phones, it just pisses me off that Samsung stops updates for older phones basically forcing you to upgrade phones. That being said, I'm sure the note 4 will never get a future update.
And, lights out.......

You guys believe a Note 7 V3 will ship with rootable firmware?
I seriously doubt it, we caught a lucky break on this one & some on V2 were left out in the cold w/a phone dead for development.
It's a nice phone without root, Package Disabler apps help a lot, along with a decent Ad Blocker, but, not enough for Round 3 on the exact same phone.
I'll check in on the next iteration, the Note 8,or whatever they'll call it.....

When Samsung has a major fiasco they recall all the product gather all the staff in the court house and destroy the product in front of them and the manager of that department is then banned from the company for life. Korean custom. Not only did the guy lose his job he disgraced his Family for generation to come. Going back to Note 7 the product is being discontinued it was announced in German newspapers today
GREAT!! *sarcasm*
My Note 5 was messing up and I got the 7 for the upgrade.
I'll have to debate this, as mine was one of the ones that wasn't a replacement or recalled. But with no rooting ability, or way to drop back a version to gain root...might have to go back to the Note 5.
I never even attempted to try the software update. I didn't like the stupid green battery icons or grouped notifications. I still have my v2 on original release firmware with updates blocked. I like the phone uprooted but I do not like the current software for it. It's a shame because I love phone otherwise, but without future root to make those small tweaks on the v3, I think I'll wait until I find something I really like. I've always been a Samsung guy that being said I'm not a real Fan of pure Google type phones. For some reason I really like touchwiz (ya I know).

Thank you. But is this by doing manually check thru phone? Or need to sideload using a computer? Because idk how to do the sideload. Id rather let the OTA from my phone.
Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk
If you depend on OTA, you might never get past 7.0. One of my N6 is still on 7.0, the other I applied the OTA file to and it is on 7.1.1 - though I have to keep up with the security updates myself.
My devices are unlocked stock but not rooted. Maybe that is why they never get OTA's anymore.
Try https://www.androidpit.com/nexus-pixel-android-update#installing
It's easy.

I wouldn't. It may work fine on a clean flash but it won't last you long after that. Might be a couple weeks, might be a couple months. It just can't keep up with a newer phone. Also, how come you're looking for a Nexus 6 when your signature says you're using a Galaxy S8? Not trying to bash your decision to switch to an older, less-capable phone, but I'm curious why you'd downgrade.

I think it still ok with a daily basic task, like calling texting, some browsing and waze? Thats all i need for a phone. I got 3 nexus 6, 1 gave to my dad, 1 to my mom which is now broken, and moto charged me 175 to replaced another n6 which i am gonna use when it come. And 1 n6 i used before then sold it for n6p. Then sold the 6p, bought s7edge, sold it and now bought 3 s8. 1 mom tmobile, 1 wife tmobile, 1 for me unlocked version. Planning to return my s8 or sell it again and use the older n6 when it arrives. Idk but i really like smoothness of the pure android and monthly updates. Which i am aware n6 wont get anymore. Which is fine. S8 is good phone smoother than previous touchwiz. But still got some laggy comparr to nexus. I think i am still good for another couple of years with the basic tasks for the n6. Hopefully.

Anyone else mad their unlocked Note 8 has no Oreo and AT&T does?

This is so weak! First time I bought an unlocked variant Samsung phone and guess what AT&T updated before the phone I bought unlocked directly from Samsung USA. Wtf?
i am mad because i was on ATO 7.1 went onto 8.0 XEF and i waited around 2 weeks, still my f*ckin RMM state is prenormal. I CANT F*CKING UNLOCK OEM. now im back to ATO 7.1 firmware and have to wait MORE TO GET THIS S*ITTY RMM!! cant even downgrade the bootloader.
Cool down, getting so pissed will not solve anything...

This is why I'm not on the beta. I get great battery life on 7.1 and so so on 8.0. I suspect it's because it's the bloated carrier version and not the unlocked. So to answer the OP I say I'm disappointed rather than mad.
Less than 3 weeks and it'll be available. I have Tmobile Note that I flashed unlocked firmware to it. Really it works near perfect...but still I always want the newest. Almost flashed back to carrier firmware but I'll just wait
Nope, not me. Official Oreo has been out for my F but I did not upgrade as soon as it came out. I have flashed Oreo on my phone & played with it a bit but as I knew from seeing all the early Oreo reviews nothing special. I'm back on Nougat now, too many imcompatibilities & things I don't like for now. Hopefully we get 8.1.1 but I don't care if we don't.
It's disappointing, Sprint and Verizon are getting theirs today (3/30/2018), yet Samsung has yet to release theirs for unlocked users.
Soon grasshopper soon.
Just enjoy your Nougat while you can!
It just doesn't make any sense. Why would a carrier bloated firmware be pushed before a non one? We really should not have to wait a year for an operating system, proud. Great job Samsung!
YES.
PS: This would have been a perfect thread for a poll. :good:
Not too long ago on Sammobile.com, an explanation was reported that unlocked devices needed to be tested to work correctly for all networks, while the branded needed only testing for the dedicated carrier...
I don't really buy that story, but I am not 100% sure.
Anyway, I don't expect the pleasure in using my phone will change notably after receipt of Oreo, so I don't really care when it arrives...

Because carriers ones have more slave users than unlocked ones. If there is no update on carrier simply the users could change their phones for another brand into their own cellphones plans (contacts). But if you have an unlocked one you can't protest; better do it by your self. I was on 7.1.1 with the August firmware until few days ago when i decided to flash throw Odin and now I'm happy with all oreo stuff and excellent battery life. Also I didn't have OEM stuff so I just flashed the same csc and that's all.
Regards

Yes you're on the right track...I read that they need to approve it or something along those lines too. People think unlocked firmware gets updated first, but in reality it basically gets updated towards the end, if not last.

But that isn't historically accurate. I believe what has changed is that now Samsung has made their US unlocked phones compatible with all Networks firmware and bloat. Where as before the unlocked phones from years prior were not. I think I am beginning to understand now. Thanks!

Real incentive to buy Samsung's flagship model directly from Samsung unlocked and the go straight to the back of the queue for updates and receive them 6 months later.
I certainly won't be doing that again.

Assuming project treble is part of future Notes, it may not really be a problem after the Note 8.
I'm pretty sure the carriers had something to do with the delay. My first unlocked device , and I am not alone. I think alot of folks went unlocked this time around , and the carriers don't like that. Although I am curious for Oreo , my note runs great now, so in a way I couldn't care less if they released it. Just that techy part of me that wants the latest and greatest.

General [Australia] Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Discussion

Hi guys
The preorder is up early morning itself. Place my pre-order for S21 Ultra Phantom Navy (Custom Color) from Samsung Online. Noticed the special note that it will take 3-4 weeks for getting it ready. I hope they deliver sooner than 3-4 weeks.
Whats your choice guys? Model-Color etc.
Thanks.
Anyone from Australia got their phone yet?
Ordered mine on the 21st and in my hand on the 25th January (Vodafone).
Upgraded from an S9+ and very happy (so far).

How is it? It says Dual SIM on the website. Is it Dual Physical SIM or SIM + eSIM?

My Phantom Silver 512GB model is single SIM. Was given an option to use eSIM but stayed with the physical SIM I had in my S9+.
Coming from the S9+ it's taken a while to retrain my brain to use the in-screen fingerprint scanner.
Other than that; the only annoying bug is the occasional switching back to the One UI 3.1 launcher (from Nova Prime).
Other than that, I'm very happy so far. I do miss having the option to use sdcard expansion. Transferred 3,500 odd photos and 5,000 odd MP3s from the S9 to the S21 and still have 75% free.
I tend to take far more still images than video so the physical storage limitation shouldn't cause me any issues but time will tell.

Never been a problem. Always in cloud. I stopped using MP3s long time ago.
Got update that my Phantom Navy Ultra is shipped. Should be getting tomorrow

I'm moving from Exynos S9+ too. How's battery life and general camera quality for you in comparison?

No update yet. Based on my experience, Australia is the last country to get any update from Samsung
Finally for the Feb update .....HUZZAH
Got it last night.
Meanwhile, March has started rolling out in some countries.
I've been refreshing Sammobile and Frija the last couple of days hoping that they'll push it out. Nothing yet

Why? I still find it really baffling that people blame Samsung for the delays. It's the carriers that hold the updates until they've completed testing. It's been that way for as long as there have been galaxy phones. Ranting makes 0 difference, if you want to make a change, don't buy the product, hit Samsung where it actually hurts so they can push carriers to fall in line to an update cycle like apple.

Not everyone buys from carrier. I have Tab S7+ LTE & S21 Ultra bought outright from Samsung online. I don't buy from carriers for the reason you explained above. Samsung completely ignores centain countries in their release cycle.
I want to mention that, both Tab and Mobile got update on the same day after the morning rant. Could be coincidence but I posted my thought to them.
Why I have switch when I am completely ok with Android phones? If I switch, I am one in millions. For Samsung, its nothing. Because I bought Samsung, I didn't sell my soul to them and why I to be quite. If Apple can do it, Google can do it, Samsung can also do it.

You don't understand how it works in Australia then. Regardless of where you bought your phone (samsung, voda, telstra, optus) the carriers test the firmware before it's released <== process takes weeks.

100% coincidence. 100% those types of comments (your rant) have no impact on their process

Exactly. But Samsung has no vested interest in doing it when it doesn't impact them selling phones. You just said it, it doesn't stop you from buying the phone, despite you knowing that Australia releases later in the month. If people want a company to change, the most effective way is through $$$ <== don't buy their products so they know things need to change.
I'll also flag that Australia DOES get regular updates out in a timely manner i.e. it's the generally the same time each month. The issue for 'techie' people is that they know it's released in other parts of the world weeks earlier, then get annoyed about it.
If you're bothered by it, use Frija and Odin to flash the latest update manually, it's an easy process and ensures you're on the latest firmware.

Actually you don't understand how it works. All your theory is only true for carrier customised and sold phones. Rest has no relationship. If you look at CSC of unlocked Australia, it different than what sold by Telstra, Optus, etc. Please do some research before you talk about it.

Nope. None of the builds are even touched anymore since multi-csc came into play. But Aussie carriers (as in the wholesalers of the networks not the badge/csc of phone) won't allow the firmware to be pushed until they've ALL tested it. That INCLUDES XSA.
EDIT: changed wording to clarify badge/csc not brand of phone

It's pretty amusing how wrong you are, but given how defensive you're getting, I'll drop it. If you think your ranting and annoyance has any impact, go for it - you keep fighting the fight.
