Best rom and kernel for performance (gaming) and battery? And tons of customization? - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

So I've only tried OOS, Omni and LOS 15.1
I found OOS to be the smoothest but it felt a lot like nougat despite being based on Oreo.
So I tried Omni, but I found it to be laggy and there were random frame drops.
Right now, I'm on LOS 15.1, it's good but I feel it's lacking alot of customization and it isn't as smooth as OOS.
What's a good rom with great performance and battery life? And features like Always on display and vibrate from switching the alert slider?
I'm also willing to try custom kernels.
I've tried Caesium but it caused lag and freeze up issues in Pubg

Don't judge me but I'm still running Sultans. Battery and gaming are great. I have xposed and am using Gravity box and a few other modules for r customization. Couldn't be happier. No vibrate in the slider and always on display. But I can live with that. No lags in pubg and battery is between 4-7 hours depending on usage. I play pubg near a charger so that's a bit different but you get the idea.
Now, if you find a oreo rom that can compete, in interested! I will keep am eye out on this thread.

Flashed Franko Kernel on LOS 15.1 after posting this the other day and pubg definitely runs better now. There's still stuttering issues at times but it's better now.
As for battery I still get around 3-4 hours sot. Nothing special.

Use skydragon + mcd kernel.... No thermal throttling at all.... Can play pubg without any lag

Long story short, no. Pure Nexus has been the most consistant performer to me, along with Xceed kernel. The other ROMs start out fast but seem to slow down to the point where it freezes over time.
thank you very much for ur reply ill try it and give u feedback

I have used JDC for more than a month now. No freezes, no dips in performance. Maybe you should try that.
MIUI EU 8.2.2.0 doesn't disappoint me in performance.

Any rom with min of 5h sot and full oms support?

Hi, i am looking for any rom which offers minimum of 4-5h sot and support OMS, now i have AEX aosp i really like that rom but the battery is so rubbish. (about 3h sot) I had stock oos 4.1.6 i really enjoy it but it does not support fully oms... Any suggestions?
Please don't tell me that u got 6-7h sot but u don't use any social media apps, no one buy's a phone with snap821 and use messenger lite etc...

What has the processor to do with social media apps?
Its a fact that apps like facebook drain a lot of battery. As long as you use them that will happen on every rom.
4h SOT is like my worst case scenario on latest freedomOS CE. Mostly like 5-6 SOT.
But this highly is dependent of your personal usage (screen brightness, auto sync and ofc battery hungry apps like facebook).
I for example use "Friendly" for facebook which is way more battery friendly and has same features and even messenger inside.
noone can recommend you any ROM and say with this ROM you will have X hours of SOT. So thread title is kinda obsolete.

Since its OOS based, no. But you still can use special OOS substratum modules like Ozone, which is pretty great and feature rich.
For OMS you can use pretty much every non OOS based ROM. All big ones have it: RR, DU, AOSPA.
I tried these 3 also but always went back to freedomOS.
Apart from that you can use custom kernels like bluspark which might save some juice. Available for OOS based and custom Roms (lineage based).

I had the best battery life on freedomOS CE + bluspark kernel so far.
If you can live without OMS i'd recommend FreedomOS.
I had higher idle drain on AOSPA and a lot other users also reported that in the thread, but that was in early stage of the rom. I dont know how many and what updates they released since then. But AOSPA seems like the only real OOS alternative to me since its great camera.
I guess you can give AOSPA a try. If it doesnt suits you, go for FreedomOS CE (has touch latency improvements and other nice features which stable doesnt have) + custom kernel like bluspark or franco.
I know you want OMS but will talk about battery life
I recommend flashing custom OxygenOs rom like freedomOS or xXx No limits with bluspark kernel and you can easily achieve 5 hours SOT if you installed AKT profile

Help! Why am i facing performance issues with custom roms

Hey guys. I usually wouldnt have made a thread like this, but honestly, i am getting tired trying rom after rom to find the one that works. I am the sort of guy who switches phones pretty often because i like what Devs at XDA are able to do to customize them. So i have recently started using higher end phones, and coming from mid-rangers i expected awesome performance and lag free experience. My last device was a one plus 2. After switching to mi5(which has a better processor), i have been experiencing lag spikes with rom. None of them work perfectly smooth, I would go to the depth of saying that my old Nexus 5 provides much smoother experience compared to this. Surprisingly, this is not the case with miui. The stock Miui rom aswell as my current rom(cpMIUI) are both super smooth(as is expected out of a sd820). I am stock android guy though, also google camera port doesnt work on miui. I just wanted to confirm if it was just my unit or is everyone facing similar issues. Buying a sd820, i dont expect something as simple as pulling down the notification bar to be laggy. Also. this issue is more prominent with Lineage OS and Lineage OS based roms. I found AOSP rooms to be generally smoother, but still, laggy enough to notice. This really wasnt the case with OP2, and i honestly wouldnt have switched if it wasnt for the amazing camera of Mi5(only with GcamMod ). Any help would be much appreciated. PS: I have tried custom kernels, even those which overclock this sd820 to normal frequencies. But no luck . I really dont have the budget to switch phones rn, and i would like to stick to mi5. Hope someone can help.

Mi devices works better with MIUI... That's just the way it is. Custom rom experience on Mi can't compare with the likes of Oneplus, Nexus, or maybe Pixel...

u can install Gcam in miui just use magisk to root and add camera fix module
Gcam will work in miui9
am using los15.1 and most of the apps freezed now its smooth and giving good battery life
All lags, freezes and scroll stutters caused by kernel. All oreo kernels based on HMP scheduling with perf daemon. And don't know why, but it cant provide smooth FPS while ui drawing (maybe some bug with frequency drops). So, 90% roms based on Oreo will lag while drawing UI all time (you can check it in dev settings > Profile GPU Rendering). Some roms trying to avoid this bug, like LOS, AEXMod with some tweaks in governor. This 2 roms much smoother than other. Or you can change default governor from Interactive to Conservative (root required). It brings massive boost on ui drawing smoothness. Or try something based on EAS kernels (Purefusion, JDC AOSP). But these roms based on 8.0 Oreo.

Thanks for a constructive reply. I am not using LOS because of the fingerprint delay bug, also i found LOS to be the laggiest of them all. But i recently installed Cosmic os 8.1, and this one seems to be rendering fine. It is using the priima kernel i suppose, with interactive governors and cfq for io scheduling. Also, i just checked, it has oc'ed the sd820 to normal frequencies (2.15 and .16)
Also, i have tried Floppy kernel, based on all 3, Google, linaro and ubertc. Also, i tried switching the governor to zen(the one i am aware of thats made to make your ui smoother). This issue is not only persistent with oreo roms, but also the nougat roms. But i have been happy and impressed by cosmic, but i will keep on switching roms and hopefully would be able to provide some feedback to the XDA community.

Absolutely yes! People were blaming me also for using antutu, because I had this doubt, then discovered that the kernel uses a strange sort of cpu scheduler which causes a performance drop of 20/25%, (still can't fix switching performance profile) results were different switching to a custom kernel. I think that people when create new roms they just steal LOS kernel, so that's why this issue occurs in more than one rom.
Anyway I also prefer the stock android camera, and I like to use the "classic" way instead of magisk thing (never liked that), just download GCam, then remove in the framework folder the camera_experimental.jar (or something called like that) and you should be fine, there are some little bugs too but is is usable.

Yea, me too, and there were people who treated me like crazy lmao, imo is a kernel scheduler issue, btw Idk why that happens , anyway there are plenty of custom kernels, in particular I used Floppy which fixes the problem.(Still need to tweak some kernel governor settings)

When i said it needs some tweaks, that is because it works in a strange way, the performance profile in the "Battery" section of LOS needs to be set to something higher, that controls the CPU, meanwhile there I also used an app called "Spectrum" that lets you control the GPU performance profile (Even though it should be control CPU), you need to set all of those to "Balanced"

Hello, I have the same problem. My MI 5 only works on miui. Any other newer rom with android Oreo brings me problems, slow looks like snapdragon 4xx. Game performance gets horrible. But they are only in the most recent roms, because in the stable JDC Team 7.1.2 rom it behaves absurdly fluid and fast, in Lineage 14.1 as well. I do not know what causes this but I can not use any more Oreo roms. I prefer Pure Android but can not use the new roms at the moment, I should settle for the nougat or miui roms. Well, I'm not saying that the new roms are bad, the work of the developers is wonderful, congratulations to everyone, but something in the new roms does not behave well.

Try the cosmic os. It seems to be working amazingly well. Also Los never worked for me, full of stutters and the ofc the fingerprint delay on lockscreen issue. Also yeah, jdc aosp should work, in my experiments, all AOSP based roms are working fine, there is some issue with Los kernel, and hence with all roms based off of it.

What rom(Pie) do you guys use as a daily driver?

Hey guys, can you recommend me a custom pie rom for Oneplus 3T? I have been reading about Pixel Experience Rom & LineageOS. I'm unsure about which one to go. I mostly use my phone for messaging, calls and reddit/instagram/quora and stuff. I don't use my phone for gaming. So, what rom would you guys suggest for a daily driver.
Thanks!
For a long time Msm Extended. Stable and full of customization.
I'm on SkyDragon and quite happy with it. Very fast due to chip specific optimizations, has enough customization options, no apparent bugs at this point.
Tbh any ROM will do if you're not a demanding user so just try something

Well, apart from ROM specific customizations menues (which you can simply ignore if you don't wanna tinker with it) they all use stock AOSP interface, so they're all pretty much the same in that aspect.
I haven't personally tried (yet) those two that you mentioned, simply because SkyDragon was first Pie ROM that I tried after a bit of research and then I didn't feel the need to change it. I would assume however that LOS can't be a bad choice; I've used it before (older Android versions) on multiple devices and was always satisfied with it. It is still in beta though so some minor bugs are to be expected.
HAVOC, SKYDRAGON, MSM(next release)
I would highly encourage you to use NLOS 16. It's a stock LOS 16 build with developer's cherry picks to add more stability. There no extra gimmicks or customization than what you will find in a LOS build. Instead, it's more stable and bit better on optimizations that stock LOS build. I would highly recommend you to try it if you want to chose from LOS and Pixel Experience.

Is it stable? - Yes, during my 1 week usage with it, it was a stable ROM.
Battery Life - Your usage is different than mine. No one can answer this question for you. You need to flash and try and then see for yourself if the battery life is good for your usage. Someone who watches a lot of netflix or youtube can have 6 hours SOT and will call the battery life great. On the other hand, with 4G 100% time connected, and lot of location access, phone calls, high brightness usage, i am lucky if I have 4 hours SOT at the end of day. So, rather than asking battery life questions, just try the ROM and see for yourself. It has all basic functions working so you won't lose on anything. It's the beauty of custom ROMs. If you don't like one, switch to other one of use stock till you find the one ROM that works for you.
AOSiP
I have tried every pie rom , nothing can match AOSiP in smoothness and stability
Havoc Os, the best pie rom ever...
Using closed beta. Bugs are present
I use LineageOS 16, and it's the best of ROMs for me.
I like AOSP style OS, and I have ~5 hours of active screen.
DU -> Havoc -> Closed Beta ... I can not decide and jump between this 3 roms...
Currently NitrogenOS...no bugs, very smooth, great battery life

[Discussion] Wich ROM are you using and why?

So one of the things that sold the idea of getting this phone was the existence of an active community and plenty of custom ROMs. So much that I don't have time to try them all.
So can you guys share your own experience, which is your favorite ROM and why?
I can share mine in the following:
From the past couple weeks I've been bouncing between a few and honestly they all were pretty smooth and everything that I needed worked, so basically I will only consider the things I like in them, such as looks and feels.
HavocOS(official)
Pros: the one with the most customizations, there is even this built in theme called Glassy/Transparent that I love, btw is there a similar theme in any other ROM?
Cons: battery life is reasonable but not as good as stock ROM. Sometimes my Bluetooth head set would connect but the audio would only come out from the phone speaker.
PixelExperience(official)
Pros: really deliver the Google pixel experience, smooth, stable, if you like Google you will like this.
Cons: doesn't offer too much in the customizations department but that's just imo, as one could argue that customizations are not the point here, anyway, battery can last a full day but still not as good as stock. Also I'm not sure if this is an confirmed bug or it was just on my end but my phone couldn't fast charge, for some reason it was only slow charging pretty weird.
Superior OS
Truth be told, I saw somewhere saying this ROM was really good, so I've installed but the looks and feels didn't catch my eye, so I didn't used for long, everything seems to work but I can't say how much the battery performs.
AEX 6.7(unofficial)
This is one in using now, is made by the same dev that made SuperiorOS, doesn't have as much customizations as Havoc but it has enough options to make the phone look like the way it pleases me, although I do miss the Transparent theme. As the others so far it's been smooth and stable, it does have things that I like very much such as a Pixel or Oreo recents style, a progress bar in the music notification, my Bluetooth head set worked flawlessly and so far the battery seems to be as good as stock ROM but I will need a couple more days to confirm that.
So please share your thoughts about the ROMs you already tried, have you had any problem with any of them? Is there any ROM that is a must try?
Great post thank you for for bringing it up. I only tried pixel experience and EU Rom. I liked how smooth PE was overall great rom but i have faced some bugs so i decided to try EU Rom. So far i'm happy with MIUI because it's easy to control and i use the appvault often to take quick notes.
ATOM OS
ATOM OS 10.
Open app fast, easy to flash, pin saver, and is android 10.
Sorry my English.
Syberia OS. Enough customization, a little less than Havoc.
Great Battery Life, installed Evira 4.5, Kernel settings: alucardsched and 100mhz for both core clusters. GPU Adreno Idler enabled .
Enjoy a great experience. Only bug for now is LTE Tile in Quicksettings doesnt seem to work for me, but it is no biggy though.
AOSiP pizza
Cuz its the only ROM which has "launch music player when headset or Bluetooth is connected" option even havoc and RR don't have this and it's super useful to me.
The latest build by smglat also comes with genom which gives 10hrs sot easily.
Also the boot animation is dope

The problem with that ROM is that you have to contact the developer directly to find out what Gapps/TWRP to use etc.

I'm also using Atom os, 8 hour SoT and a taste of android 10, with Bitgapps and Gcam. I found the firmware 10.3.6.0 to be the best base for 10, just needed to edit the updater-script
Nice, great suggestion guys, I will def gonna try Siberia OS and AOsip at some point in the future, I briefly tried Atom OS 10 last week but unfortunately it didn't support exFAT for the micro SD card so that's kind a deal breaker for me in any ROM.
So far things have been working in AEX and the battery life is good.
The screenshot is my Sot with AEX from a charge of 90% to 20%, I don't play heavy games like CoD but do play games like Feh and Mario kart.

Xiaomi.eu MIUI 10.3.4 Stable + Evira Kernel 4.5 + Magisk
I was trying other roms like RR, Lineage and crDroid but they all had some bugs. I was finally testing Xiaomi.eu and it is my favorite because it is stable, debloated, has many optimizations and is updated frequently thanks to the large community behind. Also, I have debloated the rom more using XiaomiADBFastbootTools leaving a very simple and smooth rom.
With EviraKernel + Kernel Adiutor I get a great life in the battery using alucardshed or zzmoove governors, underclocking CPU and using Adreno Idler GPU + powersave.
Overclocking CPU (big cluster) up to 2.4ghz thanks to Evira Kernel helps me when I want to emulate things like Sega Saturn which run perfectly on the SD660.
With Magisk I rooted the mobile to be able to install Xposed modules and YouTube Vanced.
I think this combination of xiaomi.eu + evira kernel + magisk is the best I've tried in Redmi Note 7 to date.

Once you select a ROM and go to the download page look at the bottom, there is a changelog there.
I don't think the dev is on xda, even the SuperiorOS thread was created by another user, I was just looking at the dev's androidfilehost page when I saw that AEX had a pretty recent release and decided to try it out. So use it "As is".

well, i tried pixel exp for a while, it was great, but the proximity sensor bugging was annoying to me, so i decided to go with xiaomi.eu stable version. I really liked, i got used to miui interface and atm i think i prefer it over the stock android feel of pixelexp.
Tough i did try to install android 10 beta of pixel experience, but my phone got softbricked every time i tried to flash it so i gave up and decided to go tih xiaomi.eu weekly releases.
Also, the main reason i'll stay with xiaomi.eu is that they base their rom on Chinese stock, which comes directly from the phone vendor, which mean that it is quite less likely that the dev will just get tired of releasing regular updates and the rom get abandoned. I don't wanna get used to a OS only for it to not be supported anymore.. Not saying that it will happen on pixel, just that it is a fear of mine.

Thanks for sharing your experience. How did you debloat more over the EU?
Official ResurrectionRemix 7.0.2 (20190705)
Minor bugs (Sometimes phone needs multiple tries to wake up), but no force closes, restarts or similar at all. Even the WhatsApp camera (And therefore WhatsApp Web) can be made to work by enabling and disabling HAL3 in "System > Advanced".
I'm using it for these reasons:
1) Stability. The dream of a daily driver that you can rely on in every circumstance. If I have no signal, I know it's not the ROM, if Hotspot doesn't connect, I know it's not the ROM, if I install an app that doesn't function, I know it's not the ROM. Very few bugs and unimportant ones at that.
2) Customisability. Resurrection Remix is still the gold standard.
3) Battery life. It's phantastic. There may be ROMs that are a tad better, but this RR is already great out of the box, no custom kernel needed.
I know the build is a bit older already, but I still recommend this particular one. It's the last build before another developer took over.

Is the same font used in Nier Automata and in some Nintendo products, I've seen it go by different names you can look up for Rodin font, but the ttf file I used is called CafeSTD. Custom fonts must be manually installed.

Apparently he is using this tool XiaomiADBFastbootTools
But I would argue that a much simpler process, if you have root, would be to just use a file explorer to navigate to these paths:
Code:
/system/app
and
Code:
/system/priv-app
And just delete the apps you don't want to keep, reboot after and it's done.

Using this "Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot Tools"
Download from Github. I can't put the links because I am a new user
you need to have java installed on your computer to make it work.
I am using Unofficial Resurrection Remix 7.0.2 Latest version
As others already said very good rom that you can rely on a daily basis.
Very customizable, fast, no drain in battery.
For my use everything is working fine no bugs.
