Unlock BL in Android Pie - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

i haven't unlock my oreo h8324 yet and it is hongkong version
I've heard that unlock bootloader in 9.0 is harmless to the camera preview
Have u guys unlocked in9.0?

At the moment you cannot unlock bootloader in Pie (9.0), the option is greyed out. You have to downgrade to Oreo before unlocking. And once you do that and unlock, you'll lose camera preview in Pie.
Some have reported that they still have camera preview working in Pie, but I do not. I did not do the DRM fix on Oreo, so that may be why. Just waiting patiently for DRMfix in Pie

I unlocked my bootloader on Pie...no problems however I did lose the camera preview, but only on photo, it's fine in video mode.

@ionSeven even when recording? My preview on video looks fine but when recording it starts getting all jittery and eventually stops.

Mine seems fine, I'm on H8216 UK

Huh ... Mine isn't, on H8324 (XZ2C). Here's hoping Xperifix for Pie comes out sooner rather than later

MIUI update UK model

Hi there. I have a Xiaomi Mi 8 (from Three) which I have currently got the region set to India, mainly so that I can use Face Unlock, Theme Store, etc.
What I'd like to know is, if I continue to use the Mi 8 under the India region, will I still get the MIUI 10 update when it's released, as its not set to UK?
Thank you for any help on this matter.
Unlock your BL, install MIUI EU and you can freely choose any themes you want without any stupid restriction from Xiaomi.

Thank you for your response, but I haven't a clue how to unlock the BL and where I'd get a non hacked version of MIUI EU from.
I'd probably end up bricking the phone. lol
I'm just worried that if I keep using it under a different region, I won't receive the update.

Usually updates are pushed to phones based on the build number. If yours is a UK variant then it'll have a UK variant build number (most likely). I wouldn't have thought the region setting you put in when first starting & setting up the phone would make any difference. But don't quote me on that...

Many thanks for that.
I initially bought this phone as a work phone, but I actually enjoy using it more than my S8+, plus I've heard that MIUI 10 (plus Android Pie) is way better than MIUI 9.6.
Thanks again.

I'm actually not an owner of the phone myself (yet) still torn between this and the Honor 10. Hard to choose between such good budget phones these days.
Glad I could help though.

I can confirm that MIUI 10 based on Pie is WAY better. Just the "OK Google" hotword detection to fix and it'll be pretty much perfect.
I'm in the UK, use mine with both my work and personal SIM in - I'm running the latest ROM from Xiaomi.eu (MIUI 10.2 - Weekly 8.11.23).
It's great.
Also have installed the custom GCam for it, which is superb! I use the Xiaomi cam for video and portrait mode and the Google Camera for everything else - night mode is seriously impressive.

I bought my daughter the Honor 10 for her last birthday. It's a great looking phone with a very good camera/cameras. The back of the Honor 10 (blue) has to be seen to be believed, it looks amazing.
I must admit, the Xiaomi does have the edge when it comes to the screen, but it is a close battle.
I do love the camera slightly more (it's very close) on the Xiaomi too, but everything just seems a little more stable with the Honor 10 and it's EMUI skin on Android 8. I've had a few older apps that have refused to run on the Xiaomi.
That will hopefully change on the next Xiaomi update.

As no one is not giving a answer, so I'll try to help you out.
It's no matter what you have chosen, if you have the stock recovery, you'll always receive OTA updates. You can not change the stock recovery without an unlocked bootloader which can be achieved by the official tool provided by Xiaomi, for further information, use Google.
Unlocked bootloader gives you access to all functions of your device, and this means that you can use even a Pixel device Android "mod", and it's the closest to the native Android.
If you are using IM apps too often, you'll notice that your notifications are not being delivered just in time. also, MIUI has tons of bloatwares and limitations that won't allow you to use your device freely, and appearantly Xiaomi is collecting some "not innocent" data from your phone, so you might want to consider your privacy. These are just my perspective as an user that was on Android for 7 years, I hope you will enjoy your device.
Have a great night.

Perhaps you will need to update it manually. Get the very first Android 9 release from official forums, and try to sideload it.

Great, do you know if stabilisation is now working properly in the camera again? I wonder if you can test to see if Camera2api is enabled? I know in the first stable they disabled it for my cor-l29.

Yes OP. Please check if EIS is working and for which modes. Am currently on 9.0.0.157 COR AL00
I have this device and updated to 159. I can confirm Widevine has been reverted to L1 (Yey!). But there's still no video stabilization. No EIS or AIS whatsoever in any video modes.

Guys, what does L1 have to do with Stabilization. lol

When it was updated to Android Pie, stabilization was gone together with other features such as Widwine L1 support.

Ok but you're talking like L1 was responsible for it. Lol
Ps- I still have L3
Got the new update 9.0.0.184 build sizing 706 Mb.
Indian version of phone. Nothing has changed for me. Widevine is still L3. Camera 2 support is still limited.
See changelog on honor club app.

There is no camera fix for P (unless t is going to be 100% functional) I recommend that you upgrade to Q directly and the camera works

Will I be able to receive and install official updates after unlocking the device?

Hi,
I own an XZ3 and it is on Android 9, I still don't receive Android 10 update.
I want to install Camera2 enabler (HAL3) and for that I need to unlock the bootloader.
Question: Will I still get and be able to install official updates if I ONLY unlock the device and install the Camera2 enabler? I don't want to install a custom ROM, just the phone's RAW capability.
Thank you!

No, you will need xperifirm and newflashee.
Camera2 enabler never works to enable RAW
It's a driver feature which needs someone at Sony who develops the feature.

What if I install Google Camera after enabling camera2?
In other words, how can I have my phone shooting raw and maintaining the possibility to receive and install official system updates?

Unlocking -> no OTA
Since it means you could have modified the systems and delta updates would fail.
For RAW please use a SODP based custom ROM.

For the real raw support you need camera drivers with that feature
All you can do is faking raw support for the gcam app, to prevent it from crashing
You also can't relock the xz3
Relocking was introduced with the Xperia 1/5 and the Xperia 10 II
Also since android 9/10 several features continue to work without DRM including the camera

Yes, the xperia 5
This is a thread for the xz3 [emoji14]
And the Xperia 5 doesn't have full raw support
It's semi raw
Only on SODP you get the full camera 2 API including raw.

Question No Netflix hdr support...

That's not correct. I've unlocked bootloader and I'm using arrow rom with L1 without problems. I haven't tested hdr though
Facing the same issue. L1 is there, but no HDR
huh that's weird. my phone also had L1 with no hdr after UBL and flashing arrow.
but then came in the latest ota and checking back at it again, now it supports hdr.
