Speaker Sound quality issue and how to fix - Sony Xperia XZ3 Questions & Answers

Hello, i've bought this phone and i notice the speakers distort in some frequency (i don't know which) it's not like a very used speaker, it's like high pitched sound getting distorted by too much volume and getting into your ears.
I tried to setup the sound settings, but i don't any major difference.
Someone can give me some tips and a recommended setup for audio settings, like using a modified equalizer, and use or no use the other settings.
Sorry for my bad english, is also time to go bed so i'm not trying too hard to write properly
Thank you

The speaker on mine works fine. Really loud and clear, no distortion. Check to see if your phone's speakers are calibrated. Access the service test menu by dialing *#*#SERVICE#*#*# then go to test, then under speaker calibration. It should say "CALIBRATED".

I can't put words in the dialer.
After some researching, and testing myself, i think sim tray has something to do with it.
If i extract the sim tray, i notice an improve in the sound output, idk what is wrong, still don't like these speakers lack of bass compare to mate 9/10 pro in house, but is rich in details.
So anyone at some point want to share the experience with the phone, i'd like to read it, thank you

Yep, you can't put words in the dialer, which is why you convert them to numbers. *#*#SERVICE#*#* would be #*#*7378423#*#*.
Like I said in my previous post, the speakers are really loud and clear. I don't have the Mate 9 or 10 so I can't compare, but I agree that it does lack on bass, even with equalizer adjusted. If you'd want a lot of bass, I suggest just getting a portable speaker or something.

Today i keep testing, definitively without the sim tray, sound doesn't distort, it doesn't mean is perfect, but good enough.
I'll keep testing today if there is some pattern apart from this, i'm not saying everyphone have the problem, i'm just telling you my personal experience.

Hi, my model distorts sounds at higher volumes too. The top speaker sound definitely worse than the bottom.one. My speakers are CALIBRATED into the service menu and also i noticed no difference when pulling out the sim tray. A ny solutions? Or, i.ll just have to livie with the fact that i have a deffective unit...

Ok, i found the problem. At least for me. The speakers weren.t clean. When dust/drops of water enter near the speakers, the sound gets distorted.

No its not dirt in speaker problem, Xperia xz2 had same issue. And xperia xz3 has same chipset and lot of simular stuf like xz2. So it has same problem. Lot of users of xz3 have that speaker problem. Crackling sound when play media also over bluetooth speaker ect. Also people with xz2 send phone for repair or replacment and problem would stay on new device or replaced speaker. Think its a bug that sony cant fix. Maby if someone have rooted xz3 so he can send catlog we would know more and ask some dev for fix.

Nope, I have my XZ3 and no issue with speakers. True when they get dirty they start to distort but I solve that by playing music loud while my phone is put on its screen to take out the dirt gathered in the speakers (I don't recommend cleaning by any other method. Speakers should never be touched by any object in any phone especially the front). For Bluetooth, I have Sony SBH56 and it works fine. Speakers are clear. I even tested again in many modes. First making call while in my Bluetooth earphones no issue. Second, I tested making a call over Bluetooth but using XZ3's front earphone still nothing strange I can hear the call clear with no issue. Finally, I make the call over Bluetooth but this time using XZ3's loudspeakers and still no issue. I only had an issue a long time ago when I put an sd card my speakers start producing crackling and distorted sound over +70% volume, then I took out SIM tray and then tested again. The speakers returned to work normally. I put back the SIM tray with no sd card and speakers were still working just fine, so I thought maybe my unit has an issue with SD card module idk. I tested a different SD card and the speakers were still working clear until now. I can't stand speakers being too quite or crackling that's why I keep my speakers clean. XZ3 is IP68 certified, so its speakers really have only those two holes to let the sound out. It makes full sense if speakers start distorting if they get dirty.
If you must know the sd card I used that caused my issue was from Kingston while the one I am using now is from Samsung Evo+ 256GB.

What is your model- ‎H8416, H9436, H9493, SO-01L, SOV39....? Because H8416, H9436 have that problem.
And btw. nobody ask if you have or dont have this problem, We ask for solution.

[Q] galaxy s mic problem

hi:
besides the galaxy s I have a nokia 72e and I want to ask if anyone has a problem with microphone (with Galaxy s)? maybe is not something serious but when i`m talking from the e72 the people hear me more clearly than i talk from Galaxy s;they complain that my voice is muffed.
i don`t know what to do .... if i go to warranty and stand in lines and let the phone for almost a week in their custody, and find out after that the phone was alright...?!
i discovered the difference by chance, when I called the same person from both phones shortly.
if anyone knows this kind of problem please let me know......
First of all, this doesn't belong in development.
Secondly, yes there is a known issue with the mic on the SGS, or rather the mic drivers and settings. I don't think there is a community fix for this, and Samsung has not acknowledged it publicly, so I don't think it will be fixed any time soon.
jap, I just finished my mic mod there. I looked the youtube video
how to disassemble the phone and bettered the mic part.
The mic is situated 90 degree and little rubber channel is used
to direct the sound to mic. This tiny rubber channel was incorrectly
pressed in so half of the input was covered. So a I widened the channel input
and also drilled the hole in case little bigger (do not do that! it may ruin the
case chrome). Sounds little bit better.
Now, is this normal, to make a mod to better mic sound for a elite phone ?
yes, there absolutely a known issue. I purchased two of these phones, and both had the exact same thing you describe. It was absolutely horrible!! I received two replacements, and the sound quality is MUCH MUCH better... BUT, it is still no where near where i think it should be. all my previous HTC devices had far superior sound quality than the Samsung GS. The Galaxy picks up voices 100 feet away... and noises from other crap that none of my other phones ever did... I'm hoping that it is in fact a software thing, and once 2.2 is released, it has better canceling technology built in. Will see..
Construction of built-in microphone is not a problem... The problem lies in software. If you connect external mic (fe. headset) sound is still disorted. There's no way 2 microphones will be broken. This is the same headset which is shipped with Samsung Wave and that phone has no problems with build in and headsets microphone.

Good point !
But in my case there was 50% better quality with headset ..
Now that I have some of yours attention - why don't I see more post
of video jerkiness, stuttering problems ?
In my phone After every 1 sec. the video recording stutters slightly.
I saw this we saw this all ready in first galaxy test video.
My main problem with the mic is the distortion... It's so bad you can't even record a clip in the car with the radio on. It already gets distorted, something to be ashamed of samsung.
Nice to have HD recording, too bad the only thing worthwhile is the picture since the audio is utter crap.
(Yes, a bit frustrated )
Is it still this bad with the JPK Froyo firmware?
Moved thread to Q&A section
Never noticed this before. I hope this is software related. More and more bugs keep on appearing, almost wishing I picked another phone. The Galaxy S has downright amazing hardware, yet Samsung choose to let it down with all the bugs

I've just bought the Galaxy S for my other half and have noticed exactly the same problem . Went back to the shop and tried the test phone they have in the shop. I only noticed a very marginal improvement (guy in the shop didn't notice any difference).
Anyway I would be interested to know if anyone has swapped the phone since noticing this problem and had an improvement - i.e. is it just a dodgy batch of microphones from Samsung?
Thanks all!
Is there still no fix for the microphon problem? 5 million items sold and each owner of it cannot take a proper video from a concert or on a fair or even on a birthday party, where there are louder surroundings. Annoying.
Please, devolopers, have an eye, ups, ear on that!

Most smartphone will get crappy sound when using built in microphone on High volume environements. Basically, it's hardware limitation with the built in microphone.
I've done some test (see in the accesorie sections for result with video) and you can use an external microphone with an adapter for theses type of recording.
So, the delivered headset does nothing better than the onboard mic.
It is definitely a matter of the hardware?
Asap I'll give an external mic a try....(using the Nokia-made TV-cable...)

Pls reply to other forum messages showing that u also have the same problem after replacing the phone (it only solve part of your problem), because I see your msg from another post that u were saying that u have no problem after replacing the phone. And that is not totally correct, u still encounter some problems
My problem is slightly different
Hi,
I got a sgs early 2011 and I quickly noticed that the voice recorder gives a very bad sound when listening back. I started to be afraid I would be as bad when calling someone. The problem I have is a horribly distorted sound with a terrible noise in the background. The recorded sound is simply useless.
later I was very happy when I did the call test as the use of the embedded microphone to call is alright. I even rang a friend beside asking what he thought about the sound qualify and he said it was ok. Then we swapped phones and I too thought the sound was fine.
But we tested again a recorded sound & video with my friend and it was awful.
After finding this thread I decided to try again and to compare with the head set microphone. For me it makes a huge difference ! The noise disappears and the distortion too.
first I thought the problem came from the compression rather than the microphone and now I don't know what to think...
My phone is on Froyo 2.2.1 (thanks to this website).

Check the comments, there is a guy who says how to fix it, but he is not very precise, so i asked for more info.

Try out Speedmod by Hardcore in the dev section. Includes fixes for the mic and headphone output.
No need for Audio boost or any hacks. Sound is the way it should be now
A lot less background noise on mic now and no more EU regulations degrading the audio quality anymore.

[Q] Speaker mystery

Hello everyone. A few days ago I started having a problem with my cappy, and I can't put my finger on the cause.
My speaker stopped working. Partially. When I'm on the phone with someone, I can't hear anything from them. If I turn the loudspeaker on, I can hear them just fine. Phone rings and notifies me of smses but I can't hear anything else. I don't hear music or video playing on the phone or the alarm clock.
In short, Working: In-call loud speaker, sms and calls.
Not working: everything else - music, alarm clock, in-call sound.
In summery, I can't decide if it's a software or a hardware problem.
I'm running CM 10.1 M2 with devil 4.2.
I should also note that I disassembled my phone to try and apply the
"loosen the screw" fix on the speaker assembly with no luck, nothing changed.
I think both. Earpiece and speakers are different devices.
Hardware - earpiece, software - speakerphone alarms, music etc.
One simple idea: take a piece of something thin, like needle and clean 3.5mm port.
I had almost-same issue 1 year ago. just dust formed wool and began shorting contacts inside port.

Thank you for the reply. Let me get this straight, you suggest I clean the 3.5mm port even though earphones work fine? (I haven't mentioned this but with earphones, everything works properly).
earphones = headphones = ear plugs? no, not this.

Your phone has 2 speakers - front, and back.
As i understand, your front speaker (for usual calls) is malfunctioning.
And if you turn SpeakerPhone in call, then you can hear oponent?
Try to clear port, this wont hurt. But might fix issue. You don't need to disassemble phone, wooden match will do too for cleaning.
Just nothing wet, and don't do rough movements inside port.
It's a bit fragile.

When it happened to me I had to re-seat the ribbon going from the speaker to the sim board. it is very sensitive and I had to do it twice before I got connection back....i just banged the phone around too much and the ribbon lost contact....After the ribbon is seated correctly then just don't tighten that screw too much as it will unseat the ribbon again.
So, gosha.
Anything fixed?
I did as you suggested Yuna, I tried cleaning the 3.5mm port but I'm afraid it had no effect.
Then I disassembled the phone again and as Rmntruexjr suggested, I tried re-seating the ribbon connecting the speaker module to the circuit board several times while the phone is turned on and I'm trying to play music throughout the ordeal. That didn't help either. As previously, ringers work and the loud speaker works but alarm clock, music and the front speaker for calls do not.
Does anyone know if the music and alarm clock are being played by the front or back speaker?
If they are played by the front speaker then the problem is obviously a malfunction in the front speaker and I should just get a new one. Otherwise, there is something weird going on and the back speaker only plays some of the sound and then I can't explain it.
music is played from back speaker.
stupid q: did you checked volume levels?

Yup. Just to make sure, we are talking about System Settings -> Sound -> Volumes?
However, your question has just made me recheck all the settings and apparently the alarm clock does work!
The current situation is music and front speaker in-call sound doesn't work, but back speaker in call sound works and so do all of the ringers, notifications and alarms.
So, if you play music - no go? Try volume buttons in-playing.
There are 4 different volumes, and 1 hidden.
Front speaker might be broken. Try stock rom, if not helping - service.
And also in call try to adjust volume.
Try kernel with/without voodoo sound. Install/uninstall voodoo sound.

No go on the music, same with the volume buttons in call.
As for the kernel, I don't think there is a voodoo and cmc version for the 4.2 Devil kernel (for whatever reason), I only found one version of it - set me straight if i'm wrong.
I'll try rolling back and flashing CM 10.0, i'll see if it helps and report back.
Servicing the phone here is probably out of the question since i897's don't exist in my country, only i9000's so if it comes down to hardware, i'll just order a new speaker module from ebay and install it myself.
But to order, you must be sure its speaker itself.
Sounds like software issue now...
Crazyness...

I'm actually surprised the ribbon trick didn't work. I know your issue sounds messed up, but what you describe is detail for detail what I was seeing. It made no sense what so ever to me how for instance no front speaker in call but still speaker phone worked, but then no music, yet alarm works....(i think the ribbon can lose contact on just the right side so you only get some things working).
Sorry it didn't work for you, but it might be worth it to try again if you exhaust all other possibilities. If you do, keep the phone off while trying to seat the ribbon(and make sure the little black fastener is all the way open(up) when inserting the ribbon). Then to test without putting it all back together I used an elastic to hold the battery and tested that way........
If it really does turn out to be the front speaker/jack/sensor unit, I found one last month on ebay for around $2 for a cappy with a bad Jack and it was fairly easy to replace.
For what it's worth, mine stopped working the other day for no reason. Hit it, and now it works. Just something to try (not too hard of course, just a light tap on the hand )

Same issue....That is how mine started...I dropped it one day then I went to play music and the sound would just cut out for no reason it seemed...I could shake or tap on the phone and it would come back on for a while, then nothing again....for me, it was the speaker ribbon.
Ahh that's kinda crappy (no pun intended). As soon as I hit mine, it worked the whole time the phone wasn't bricked .

I'm afraid I tried everything I could which relates to the common Cappy speaker malfunction, that's not it i'm afraid.
I spent 10 days in the desert prior to this malfunction so it's very possible sand caused something (there is sand inside the phone ) or I may have dropped it or something. I didn't want to mention this earlier so I don't throw you guys off straight into a hardware issue.
Well imo hardware is usually an easy fix, so long as it's not the main board (at that point it'd make more sense to just buy a new phone). Open the phone up (don't be scared, there's a tear-down guide on this section w/ pictures), take a can of compressed air, and lightly go over all of the parts inside the phone. Take care not to knock anything out of place. You may also want to re-connect all of the ribbon cables, just in case one came loose (very VERY high possibility). If you need any extra help you can pm me here or shoot me an email (I work in IT and do hardware repairs all the time ).

Speaker Crackle/Rattle

Has anyone observed speaker crackling above mid-volume? My top speaker has a buzzier character that gets more noticeable as you play louder and bassier/fuller sounds. I'm not sure if it's crackling or something rattling inside the case. The lower speaker sounds clear and normal.
I have this as well.

Same
Mine doesn't
I made a short recording to show what I mean. The sample is from plugging in my magnetic cable a couple of times. The charging sound is particularly annoying to hear crackling.
I may have to send my unit back to Clove for warranty service. Bummer.
I have the same issue, and yes, it is the charging sound that is the most annoying, it sounds exactly the same as yours, is if something is loose inside and vibrates.
Until now I was willing to live with it since apart from that I love this device... until yesterday evening that is, when I realized that also the gyroscope calibration is way off (when trying to play Doodle Jump) and there doesn't seem to be a way to do a system-level calibration of that thing anymore. There used to be in older Xperia models in the service menu. Now I'm thinking of sending it back, which I really would rather not, having already configured everything to my liking...

Earpiece not working after Battery Replacement, any ideas?

I replaced the battery in my wife's phone and immediately afterwards I hear no audio from the earpiece. When I plugin headphones I can hear audio fine from the headphones, youtube pauses when I remove the headphones which indicates it does know that the headphones aren't plugged in and should be sending audio to the earpiece. Does anybody have any idea what connections might be the issue? I have taken the thing apart 4 times trying to find what connector might be misaligned with no luck thus far and really don't want to have to get another phone.
Same exact problem here...
Hi there archangelus2,
Have you ever found a fix to the problem? I also noticed that my loud speaker is now not as loud as it used to be... and by trial and error, I found out that squeezing the top right corner (looking at the screen) it gets a bit louder so I guess that some of the contacts aren't touching well or some other odd crap is going on. The phone is easy enough to open and take apart (if you know what you're doing and are very careful and gentle), but I did notice that given the complains that have been posted post-repair, it does not seem to be too reliable when putting it all back together. The earpiece going completely mute is complete nonsense for instance as there isn't all that much that could go "wrong" in those contacts and I wonder if something gets messed up at the software level after a replacement of hardware like the battery, is performed.
Any help and info will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers! and stay

Is there anyway that you accidentally messed with the earpiece? There is a small rubber protector inside the phone on top of the earpiece, I suggest you check to make sure this is positioned properly on the speaker.
Best of luck,
Matt
Yes, I just got my earpiece fixed. I had a 16 GB AT&T model who's sound was terrific. Then i got greedy and went for a 32 GB latin american model (some telecom I forgot the name of) its earpiece sound was extremely low. I ordered 2 earpieces from ali express just in case they were to be changed. Yesterday I took it to a shop and the guy fixed the original earpiece by applying some tape around the earpiece to focus the sound out of one way and now its as good as new. $10 and am happy.
So yeah probably in your case I'd say he kinda misplaced the earpiece. You may get it checked.

speakr stop to work calling but youtube works fine

Since I bought the z3c speaker was very low, but after one year and a half it became more and more lower, now still it's working playing music or youtube, alarm .... but when I call stops to work and I can not lisenting nothing persons can ear to me., sometimes they tell me that they lisent to me with a buggy sound
Other thing I feel was that headphones seems sound lower now as well.
Using *#*#7378423#*#* I look for test service and speakers and speaker right works with a low sound but works, but when I try left speaker does not work.
Has z3c left and right speaker? why on hell works on youtube but calling stops to work, maybe is the speaker?
I have tried differents roms, open bootloader and change kernel but still happens.
I'm thinking about to buy speaker and change it, Do you think is speaker problem? I saw loud speaker and ear speaker what is diference? maybe I should change both and mic phone ass well and is anyone speaker louder thand others?
Thank you
Anyone knows a good speakers for z3c or seller is phone parts? I saw on eBay and alien a lot of cheaper speakers, about 2€, I don't trust their speakers are original like they claim.
Any help please, anyone change the speakers?
