Mi A2 mtp doesn't work in Linux - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

As the title suggests, I can not connect mtp to Linux, but it works in Windows. Other phones of mine do not have this problem under Linux. Does anyone have a solution or the same problem? I've already tried several versions of the stock rom and it also doesn't work in the pie beta either.

My A2 connected with mtp under Linux all the time. No issues.
I'd suggest turn on adb, keep the developer selections open, make the connection, then if no mtp, bring settings back up and in the usb settings section, select mtp.
It seems Linux has some built in detection's for devices, product ID's etc. Many times it results in a 'default' setting of 'charge only'. So you have to change it back after the connection.

What Linux distribution are you using? I have no problems whatsoever using Arch Linux + Nautilus inside i3wm Window manager.

I already tried this. What I personally find the strangest thing is the file transfer via adb push / pull works but when I try in the file manager to open the phone comes the error that the device could not be mounted because of a udev error.
I tried it on 2 PC's one with Cinnamon and the other with xubuntu and it doesn't work.
My other phones (Xiaomi Mi5s and Mi A1) are working flawless on both PC's.

Well, now you have a north to go.
Take a look at the DebuggingUdev wiki from Ubuntu.
Maybe it's just a missing udev rule. Execute
Code:
sudo udevadm monitor -e
After, connect your device and you should get better logs.

If I understand the log correctly, it tries the device instead of mtp with ptp to mount. But to be honest, I do not really understand what's there stand.
Here the output from the command:

[Q] Nook, ADB problems

For some reason my nook won't show up in windows 7 device manager as anything but a storage device (both the nook and sdcard). It doesn't show up under "other hardware" like all the tutorials show. I am at a loss?
Should I reset my device (unroot, wipe clean, etc)? And try again or am I missing something.
I am looking to get ad hoc working and am stuck in the mud
Depending on what ROM you're running... you may need to go into nook color tools and toggle usb debugging mode... it is a known issue in some ROMs....
You may also need to edit %userprofile$\.android\adb_usb.ini so the only line in it is:
0x2080
anyone have problems in ubuntu 10.04 can't get it :'(
I figuered it might be that I had tried some different kerenels recently. I did eventually return to stock. I have toggled debugging mode to no avail.
I will follow the other instructions you provided and if all else fails wipe her clean and try that.
Thanks.
Sent from my rooted nook color using Tapatalk
I have the same problem and am using the stock kernal. I have even tried two different computers (one with Win 7 and the other with XP) and get the same result. The first time it I tried with XP it showed "NookColor" under Other Devices with a ? mark. In just a second, it reloaded Device Manager and would never showed up again. I have tried all suggestions including the USB Debugging toggle with no positive results. By the way, I rooted using auto-nooter 3.0 for Nook Version 1.1. Everything seems to work well and I am using ADW Laucher EX. I am familiar with ADB as I used it root my Motorola Droid. In that case, I had no problems with it seeing my Droid.
Any suggestions would be helpful. I also have Ubuntu on a test computer that I may try if no solutions are found.

I had the same issue in Ubuntu 10.04. My Evo would show up fine. My NookColor I could not get to show up though. No matter what I tried (I tried all the walk throughs on forums, Nookdevs.com, etc).
I finally just gave up. I've just been moving APK's from my Evo to my Nook to install them. There are many other things I'd wish to do through ADB other then install apps though so I may give it another shot sometime soon.
If it worked in some ROM versions and not in others... you need to check the device ID in windows device manager... get the PID for the device listed.... then you will need to add the device PID to the .inf file for the drivers so it will know to use the drivers that work for the "new" device (not really new.. just HWID change in some new kernels/ROMs
I had a world of trouble getting getting my computer to recognize the nook so that ADB would recognize the device. I mean HOURS of debugging.
However.. good news!... The answer that can help you is...: screw it and just download adbwireless app. All you do is run the app while connected to your home network and then on your computer run the the command "adb connect 192.168.1.xxx:5555" and you are connected and can run adb just like you were USB'd up
I hope this helps
Recommend installing the easy ADB install for Windows from the developers forum.
On Win7, sometimes you need to force the driver to use "USB Composite device" or "Android composite USB device", even after doing the easy ADB installer above.
Managed to get ADB working after Autonooker 3.0, Nook 1.1
Hi, All,
I had similar problems. I managed after a bit of fuss on my mac to get ADB up and running.
The main problem seemed to be getting USB debugging working. I went into nook color tools, from ADW launcher. I went to All Settings : Development, and saw that USB debugging was checked, but I didn't believe it was running.
So, I unchecked both Auto Mount (to simplify what the heck was going on over USB) and USB debugging, and hit back, to save the settings. Then I went back into debugging, and re-checked USB debugging.
Then, I made sure that ~/.android/adb_usb.ini contained the line:
0x2080
I killed the adb server and restarted it, and voila, ADB.
Hope this helps some folks.
Dave
I am in the same boat, adb works fine on my other android device, but won't see my nook for anything.
I have tried every permutation I have seen of the rules file, still nothing.

[Q] ADB Problems installing on W7x64 (Composite Driver wont show)

HI,
I've had success installing my other android devices on my windows 7 x64 computer, have even used my (ADB) Nook Colour on a windows 7 32Bit laptop fine.
Problem: Android Composite ADB Driver wont install/ isn't found, Device is Auto Nootered on 1.1 using rooted stock firmware.
Tried:
I have the .android folder in my user profile dir with the device ID in it
Followed various wikis and guides (that worked for the 32Bit version)
Watched the driver load/unload in device manager as I tick 'Development Mode (enable ADB)'
Tried various driver packs from here and googles latest offering, still only matches up with Android ADB Driver not the Composite (wont even show me the composite one)
Wireless ADB works and is disabled, worried about installing CWM using wireless for some reason USB feels safer to me
Thinks I noticed:
Hardware ID is listed as USB\VID_2080&PID_0002 which matchs up with %SingleAdbInterface% in the ini file for the driver, composite aka %CompositeAdbInterface% has &MI_01 on the end. Not sure if that means its not getting the right hardware ID from the device when ADB/ Development mode is enabled of if having the wrong driver loaded on it shows up the wrong Hardware ID.
Things I havent tried, enabling ADB on the Nook using sqlite3 method, but if it works on another coputer didn't think it would be a good idea.
Plan:
Install CWM, flash CM7 or similar to device.
I had the same issues with Windows 7 64-bit and never got it working. Worked fine on my WinXP laptop at work though. If you find a solution I would be happy to hear it, but to be honest I have found I haven't really needed ADB much if at all.

Same here!
This one is weird...
I'm on win7x64 and I *have* got adb to work at times. When I was first rooting my new NC (1.1.0), I fiddled with it and I had it running over usb fine. But now, when I plug in the usb and I either get that the device is unrecognized or it goes into usb sync mode. Haven't quite figured that out...
But, ultimately, I just use adb wireless for any adb stuff, although it's "not recommended". It's worked perfect for me all along.

Glad to help. What do you mean USB Auto Mount? I kind of thought that should happen?
My goal for getting adb working was to get su, which i got here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953110 with a bit of trouble but seems to work, so that i could drag items from my pc onto HC. I'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952456 to mount the media directory. I now seem to have su installed and the USM app is working. i only see my BN media directory from my pc now (yay) but i can't browse that directory from my nook HC (boo). So i can't share files between eggclair and HC. I'm a noob to nook and newbe to linux, so i'm assuming it is a permissions issue but don't have enough knowledge on how to change them yet.
I've installed DropBox but it keeps asking for an SD card, which isn't a big issue, just i haven't found the time to go buy one. Is there a way to use db without an SD card?
unfortunately no, db requires external storage. if you opened the apk to recode its default directory maybe but im not sure its possible
usb auto mount I can disable in nook tools but its a persistant system that defaults every reboot, I dont like to see it popup while using the nook when I plug it in just one of many peeves
Things I noticed:
In the Driver ini it states &MI_01 means composite driver is installed.
Under Hardware ID I only get :
USB\VID_2080&PID_0002&REV_0216
USB\VID_2080&PID_0002
This leads me to believe that even though the box is ticked on my nootered Nook that its not really enabling ADB on the device (then maybe it would show &MI_01 as needed?)
Going to flash a new firmware.... maybe Froyo and see if it comes up right after that.

I thought that as well and flashed back to the EC 1.0.1, sideloaded 1.1 update and repartitioned, used cw to add HC back and all that, and still had the same issue. Came down to the ini file not having a NookColor section.
Did you check the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987409
I'm no stranger to drivers, I could force it to use the driver by changing the ini files but it still wouldn't appear in ADB Devices.
Flashed Nooky FroYo and now the device driver states the hardware ID has the missing '&MI_01' which means the composite driver works out of the box.
I used IOMonsters Easy USB installer and it seems to have installed the drivers for Windows 7 64Bit Fine
After running the install .exe I also had to execute the Inst64.exe

Need help trying to unlock bootloader on HTC One

So last night I tried unlocking my bootloader so I could root my HTC One, but I've had one issue. Whenever I get to the part where you make the back up of my apps I get the following message "adb: unable to connect for backup". My phone is conncected, and I have USB debugging enabled. I also checked the device status and it keeps reporting it as offline. I don't quite know what to do, if anyone can help it'll be appreciated.
First off, I barely know anything with regards to phones as I still learning. However, last night had a similar issue and ended up having to use cmd prompt to navigate to adb and then used it to see the device.

New security enhancements in android 4.2.2 builds (and above) require the end user to explicitly grant adb access to any connecting computers before that connecting machine can successfully issue any adb commands to your device. When you connect a 4.2.2 (and above) android device to your machine (with USB debugging enabled) for the first time, you should be prompted with a confirmation message to allow or disallow USB debugging. This message will display your computers unique RSA key fingerprint and provide you a checkbox to “Always allow from this computer”. Check this box and select ‘OK’. Your device should no longer be listed as ‘offline’
If you don’t see this prompt then you should try the following:
With your device connected via usb and the toolkit running, toggle USB debugging off/on in Settings > ‘Developer Options’ and see if the prompt comes up
Also try unplugging and re-plugging the usb connection.

You have to help us with a little more info -- ADB and Fastboot just *have* to work or you'll get nowhere:
1) What OS are you using? Version included;
2) Plug in your phone, open a command window in the appropriate place and type: adb devices
Tell us the output.
If you don't get a device listed, either your drivers are bogus on your machine and need to reload, or you're not getting USB debugging setup correctly (not sure how you miss that, so I'd think the former).

I know you don't want to read this, but you'll need to read all about Macs and this issue. A quick Google on "adb unable to connect for backup mac" brings up all sorts of folks fighting exactly what you are. I don't have a Mac -- use Linux almost exclusively, but it all appears related to either usb debugging, or a connection timeout setting.

No OS on phone! OTG USB / conncetion to PC not recgonized! Seeking Help

In the past 3 months or so I noticed that my Mi5 3GB 32GB is not recognized by my PC anymore. I didn't care too much because I hardly connect my phone to PC.
I was running the lastest xiaomi.eu Rom unrooted.
So on Thursday, I deleted my OS by mistake, therefore I do not get past the Mi Logo.
I can boot into TWRP Recovery & Fastboot however, there is not code when using CMD adb/fastboot devices such as 1cwe3f23.
Also, I read about the EOL method aka test point method, to force a connection as Qualcomm driver with no success. Different PCS dont recognize any drivers.
The battery is not an issue because I can easily charge my phone to 100% and it can hold its charge, therefore I do not think it is a battery related issue.
What i did so far :
- used 3 differenct USB C cables and PC -> phone still not recognized
- Installed all lastest driver on Drivers -> phone still not recognized
- tried to use the test points method -> phone still not recognized
- tried Miflash tool -> phone is still not recognized
- tried Mi PC Guide -> didn't work either
Then I read somewhere that I can use a OTG cable with a pen drive
- OTG storage is not recognized in TWRP recovery and cannot be selected. [OTG STORAGE 0MB even if different pen drives are connected]
SO my Main problem is not the phone itself, it is that I cannot get any data onto the internal memory because I can't get past TWRP.
Please help me out since I really struggling with this problem for the past 7 days and I'm desperate now for any kind of help.
Greetings and thanks in advance.

What do you mean by "can't get past TWRP"? Is it that you can't flash any ROM to system?
You have fastboot and TWRP, so things are likely fine. Rather than use Windows, you might have more luck running linux inside VirtualBox (plenty of guides around XDA). If you can sudo fastboot devices in linux, you should be good to go. Otherwise, the error reporting is often richer/simpler in linux.

could you be more precise please? How did you overcome not having a PC conncetion?
Currently, I am not able to transfer any kind of data to the phone either by PC or OTG. Furthermore, the internal storage is completely empty after wiping everything by mistake.
I have twrp working fine, but without any data on the device, I cannot use it. Also, the device only stays in fastboot for roughly 20 secs before it turns off.
any help is welcomed. Thank you

A number of different issues could be here.
#1 Firstly, ensure you've installed openvm tools and reboot. This should enable things like hardware pass through.
$ apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop
$ sudo init 6
Then, follow these instructions for the pass through (may be slightly different, but very similar) https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=570452
#2 Type "adb" and see what version is in use in the first line of output. If it's 1.0.0.32 or older, it might be an issue. Try installing the following packages:
$ sudo apt-get install android-tools-fastboot android-tools-adb
You might need to find a newer version elsewhere, Ubuntu repos are often old. Google around for 1.0.36 or newer. This could solve your issue.
#3 Ensure you have the necessary rules for the Mi 5. There's a few different hardware models. The Arch Wiki can walk you through it better than I can: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/android#Connect_device (ignore the package hyperlinks, they're arch-specific). Only do this if you've properly configured the pass through from #1. Do F"igure out device IDs" and then "Adding udev Rules". Instead of the "udevadm" command run
$ sudo service udev restart
If you're still not detected, no idea.

Thank you again for the help!
Unfortunately, it appears that my device is still not recognized by either Ubuntu or Win10.
I Have taken the necessary steps to install Ubuntu and update the adb drivers (1.0.39) but still no luck so far.
It really pisses me off since I was stupid enough to wipe the internal storage ☹ and not I am not able to transfer any data to the devices again.
Any other out of the box ideas?

You configured the USB pass through to your Ubuntu host? Double check you followed #3, and then run sudo fastboot devices. That step is tricky for some.
Reconnect your phone to your Ubuntu host (in fastboot) and run "dmesg -T", see what errors are present. If you have no errors, I would image it's a configuration issue. Other than that I'm out of ideas.

Reconnect your phone to your Ubuntu host (in fastboot) and run "dmesg -T", see what errors are present. If you have no errors, I would image it's a configuration issue. Other than that I'm out of ideas.

OMFG!!! First of all, thank you for support and your patience. I really appreciate it.
HOWEVER, all it was is that the USB PORT was full of dust( literally tons!) which appears to have allowed to charge the phone but seemed to have cloaked up some part of the responsibile for a usb connection to a computer.
Stupid me should have known this because the usb port was kinda wobbly which I had mistaken for degradation using the phone for almost 2 years
MANY THANKS!

Hey , I was researching about my issue and came up to this. I'd be really glad if you can sort me out with this. I have the same mobile , by mistakenly wiped out the phone including the internal storage , my pc does not detect the device , and whenever i go to fastboot mode to try something like miflash , it goes back to twrp after 15 seconds. Also , i tried several OTG's but none of them get detected on TWRP , and I am stuck on this thing for almost a week now . Please guide me on how to sort this out . i basically just downloaded adb files , miflash , etc from the internet and never reinstalled them. also i used several usb c cables to connect to pc and even then device manager does not detect it . thank you . i would really appreciate your reply.

Fast boot <waiting for device>

I just got hold of an xz2 for a bit of development work, and am trying to unlock the bootloader (yes, it's allowed, I've checked)
I'm connected to a usb2 port (same one I use for my mi mix 3 because that doesn't like usb3 for fastboot)
ADB works perfectly, however, fastboot lists no devices, and executing a command just causes <waiting for device> to show.
I've installed the drivers supplied by sony, though, the installation reported they installed but could not start.
I've never experienced this before, so, tell me if I'm doing something wrong.

Does it work with
Different cable
Different port
Different pc
Different OS like linux
?
If I remember correctly I had issues with windows drivers.
Tried different ports, same issue, not tried a different cable, but I know this cable works as I use it for fastboot on my mi mix 3.
I'll try Linux though, a few posts seem to say it works

yep, worked with linux, well, i just connected it to my mi mix 3, installed the adb/fastboot binaries in magisk and ran the commands from the terminal, looks like all my fastboot work is being done from another android device

Arch linux only ?
Don't see why not, the binaries are just compiled for ARM, don't think they are architecture specific.
My mi mix 3 is ARMv8 (64 bit) sd845, and it worked fine, not sure about ARMv7, but as I say, I think the binaries are ARMv7 anyway.
So long as the device can host a USB connection it will work.
For anyone having problems with the,"Waiting for Device" in windows,
USB debugging enabled on the phone.
Connected to PC through USB data cable and Phone screen unlocked and File Transfers enabled.
In windows> Device Manager> Android device(or your device/phone) >ADB driver or similar > Properties> Driver> Update Driver > Browse Computer > Let me pick from a list of devices and Un-tick the show compatible devices and find one that works.
I've had to keep this general as there are quite a few variables with different phones makes/models but the problem is caused by Window's Device Mangler not getting the correct ADB driver installed/chosen and or too many varied ADB driver packages installed
HTH
First hit in google... so let me explain it again. (Yeah... fresh windows install ****ed me over... )
You need ADB/Fastboot.
Sony Drivers?: https://developer.sony.com/file/download/xperia-xz2-driver/
Google USB Drivers: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
If you can't install it. Disable Driver signature enforcement (Hold Shift while you press the restart button with the mouse)
When ADB works but fastboot isn't recognized reboot into bootloader "ADB reboot bootloader" and then in Device Manager find the "Android!" device and manually select the Android Bootloader as driver.
