After exhaustive searching, I've come to the conclusion that my brand spanking new G5 on the Rogers network cannot be rooted. Looks like I'll have to move south of the border to get a US model.
Does the EU model with the official bootloader unlock not work on Canadian networks? That would be preferable to a US model and a root that might not work after version updates.
@Kudalufi, that might work but it's too much of an unknown for me. I read somewhere along the way that the Canadian LTE frequency bands are unique to Canada. And although I can't see how that would affect a rooting attempt, I'm not going to risk it. A good thought though, thanks anyway.
I find that hard to believe... in 10 years I haven't had a phone that these dudes at XDA haven't figured out... the G4 was a pain but the root was still out there.
Fair enough. But - for me - the potential headaches of rooting this particular phone outweigh the benefits. If I can find a no muss no fuss solution, wonderful and I'll take it. And if I can't get it, that's cool too. In that case, I'll go hang out with my buddies or play with my kids instead

Unfortunately only the handsets THAT LG.. in their wisdom.. deem "unlockable"(EU/European).. will ever have a fully unlockable bootloader.
Unless anyone finds a way.. that so far through all research.. has been for the most part.. A dead end, there will be no rooting ?
The G5 is long past it's new and exciting phase. The root experts have moved on to better pickings. Platforms where rooting will get them attention, money, fame, and wimmin.
I'm relatively certain there will be no general root for the G5. Which is a shame, because this lost LG my business.

i can guarantee you that the big companies like rogers, at&t, etc. offered LG money to have the bootloader locked. and LG, like the idiotic company that it is, accepted.
what is the real difference between the european G5s and the north american G5s? the t-mobile and the factory unlocked US versions(just recently released) can have their bootloaders unlocked. why can't the rest?

By definition carrier never liked root-able phone as they are bearing the risk whatever are the terms, if your phone brick you may ultimately move somewhere else and cost them money in the process.
Whatever we agree on this is or not is not the point, they do prefer locked phone, a lot of the hardware manufacturer also prefer to see their hardware installed inside locked handset this is why some camera are not as good on the rooted version than the locked version (they protect the firmware that work only fully on locked handset)
As far as I know LG never sold the G5 claiming they would support unlocking boot loader on all the SKU... I will always prefer an unlocked device over a locked one. I bought mine used and it was a good deal, but I would not purchase a new phone at full price if it is locked. Some company are better in this regard. Unlocking should be a matter of choice for any non-subsidized model.

I had an H840 that cannot be unlocked, I spent countless hours searching online and following spam tutorials to get it unlocked but no luck. In the end I sold it on eBay hoping to get about £200 for it but to my surprise I sold it for £264 and I bought a used H850 for £240. Now I have a rooted device.
Has anyone tried Magisk?

The reason Canadian G4 has root, is because there was a loophole in the Android 5.0 software that allowed you to do some code injection and root it without unlocking the bootloader. But that was patched in Canadian G4 6.0. And the G5 came even later, so for sure the loophole has been patched. Now, bootloader is everything, and if it is not unlocked, you're out of luck when it comes to gaining root access.

As far as I've read it should work almost everywhere as I've saw the frequencies on first eye.

Hey y'all, Verizon Moto E4 Plus (XT1774) owner here. I've seen a couple posts on XDA and other Android forums about bootloader unlocking for Verizon-specific Moto devices relating to subsidy (SIM) unlocking.
As we all know, the XT1774's bootloader is locked, there is no way around that yet. I have seen people mention that subsidy unlocking allowed their bootloader to be unlocked, but from my testing that is not true.
I tried an H20-Wireless sim, and an US Cellular sim; obviously I also got an unlock code. Neither of the sims changed my get_unlock_data, so neither would unlock the bootloader.
Just wanted to disprove any of these claims so no one wastes their time. Thanks.

You are correct. If unlocking your bootloader to customize the device is the goal, you need to steer clear of any Verizon branded devices. ATT, Sprint and a few others will also not allow bootloaders to be unlocked.
I have found that to be safe, purchase the device straight from Motorola as an unlocked device (Any US carrier/international) is the way to go. You will not get a discount like you do when purchasing through a carrier or big store name like Walmart but you will get a device that allows for bootloader unlocking.

I don't know about ATT, but all the Sprint/boost/virgin mobile devices ARE unlockable. It's only the Verizon variant that isn't. This is how it's been for some time.

I agree, but lately, Sprint has stopped support for bootloader unlocking. I read this directly from there site. It may be a little while tool it trickles down to current production devices but beware. And I am taking about Sprint Branded devices, and not devices you bring in on your own.

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I'll have to start buying retail models. A little more $, but I'm very tired of the cdma data problems on custom ROMs every time there's a new Android version or new device anyway.

I hear ya. Where I live Verizon is there only network that is any good/dependable. As much as I despise BigRed, I have to use it. If I had my way I would go Boost Mobile or any other GSM network carrier. That would open up the doors for my YouTube channel and allow me to test more devices the right way and not just in WiFi. I love my OnePlus5 but can only use it with WiFi. So I can't fully enjoy it. But it would in GSM.
They do make a device that is unlocked for the US Big 4 carriers and that's what I bought. Subsidy unlock to my knowledge does not bootloader unlock your device. If I see a really good Rom come out, I'll look at it, but Motorola did a really terrific job keeping what they did to it "light". At the price I paid for it ($159.99); I might buy another one and store it, though I have read a few threads that indicate that Motorola won't update the device to Oreo.

I see if you got your device from Walmart. It will would be able to remove the bootloader? Do I have have to get Verizon to take the lock off? Or has anyone been able to take the bootloader off of Walmart prepaid Verizon xt1774? This will be my first build. I could use all the advice and help! Thanks

You cannot unlock the bootloader of the XT1774. No ifs, and, nor buts.
just got new one today and was gonna to use xposed-after do some reading...smh, should have read before buying to make sure all is set to unlock and flash
As the title says, I'm in the market for a new phone, and after years of using my HTC 10, it's starting to get old and decrepit. I loved how easy HTC made it easy to unlock the bootloader, and I see some of the newer flagship phones, especially w/my carrier(I'm on Sprint) make it tough to do so. I loved having a rooted phone and I'm seeing that the Note8 (US Version) can be rooted, but I'm assuming there's prerequisites that used phones might/might not have to do so. So I'm just wondering if there's any questions I should ask the sellers of a Note8 on Swappa or eBay to make sure that root is possible when I decide to buy one. I don't wanna wind up w/a LS997 situation, where I got the phone but it was too upgraded that the methods to root were patched up. Thanks for any help.
Note 8 US version is pretty much limited to Nougat and early Oreo builds, and i may be wrong about the latter. Only Boot loader v1 an v2 were able to get root, and v3 up to a point. Current bootloader version is v5 with Pie. Chances are you'll get a phone with v3 and up.
If you want a root friendly ecosystem, get the International variant.

Gotcha. So I should ask a seller if the phone has a v1-3 Bootloader? That shouldn't be too hard an ask, so thanks for the assist there. Also, will International variants work w/Sprint, b/c that's the network I'm on? And are they also restricted to same v1-3 Bootloader environment to root?

International variant will have 4G support on Sprint, but 2G/3G wont work due to network differences (Sprint uses CDMA). It'll work with AT&T and TMo however. But somebody from the states should be able to answer this one in detail, i only know that Spint/Verizon phones dont work where i am, which is pretty much the same issue, but reversed.

Finding a <v3 bootloader will be hard, and asking sellers about it will leave them puzzled. If you're going to root, as everyone says, get the Exynos version. As said by others, you're only limited to early Oreo and Nougat builds. Not worth it for such a good phone, honestly. But hey, don't let me stop you ^^
Hi, I did some searching around and can't seem to find anything on the forums about the us unlocked version of the v40. I have a rooted us unlocked v30, display is fubar so I'm desperate and have no time to do the months of research I usually do before deciding on a phone.
Is it the V405QA7? Is the bootloader unlock available, and rootable? If so is there a mod to use the dac in hifi mode at all times? Those are my 3 major concerns atm, I know support for the v30 was very limited and disappointing to say the least but I'm hoping things might have improved a bit with the v40. Thanks.
You can buy any Sprint, Verizon, or ATT V40 and have the bootloader unlocked. Vlad the man will also throw on US unlocked pie on you phone do you don't have any bloat. That's what I am currently running.

Buying a carrier phone may mean it is SIM locked, though. I have the V405QA, which is not locked to any carrier, and Vlad unlocked my bootloader and rooted it. Have not come across any systemless mods to enable the quad DAC full time though, however this phone is relatively new to the mod community so give it time.

I just purchased the Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5g (Model#: GM1925 Firmware Version: 9.5.12.GM25CC). I absolutely love the phone to but there is one huge issue with it. Sprint has disabled the OEM Unlock setting in developer options making it impossible to unlock the Bootloader and root the device!
The reason I am starting this thread is
1) Warn perspective buyers that the Bootloader cannot currently be unlocked
2) See if the XDA community has any ideas on how to Unlock the Bootloader without enabling OEM unlock.

I have recently seen some comments like this:
"If you have the device SIM unlocked, you are then eligible to request the token to bootloader unlock your device from OnePlus. This process takes about a week. You then flash the token and it will then allow you to enable OEM unlocking in Developer Options and then unlock the bootloader."
THIS IS 100% FALSE. Both myself and "Whoareyou" have tried this and it does not work. According to OnePlus, "the Sprint version of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5g doesn't support oem unlock". T-Mobile's bootloader unlock procedure will work on our device.
EDL mode -> download global partitions is my guess.

Yea, me too. They didn't do anything like this with the Essential PH-1 or Pixel 3 so I was pretty surprised when I saw that they disabled "OEM Unlocking".
I understand that Sprint has to protect themselves by sim locking leased devices to their network but this is ridiculous.
Good luck getting support from OnePlus on any issues regarding the 5G device. I have the UK 5G variant and support from OnePlus is non-existent! We have ONLY JUST got the camera improvements etc that the LTE version got............2 months ago. And we've spent the best part of 3 months on June's security patch until 2 days ago when OnePlus updated to August's patch. Support for the 5G variants fcuking sucks guys!

I’d like to know if the Sprint edition has the Local Update option in Settings -> System -> System updates. Maybe that can be of use to free your phone. Can you post a screenshot of the system updates screen?
It does not have that option and OEM Unlock is greyed out on Developer options.

I was also unable to OEM unlock this phone. I tried via Fastboot as well.
Would the T-Mobile method prevent me from activating the SIM or using the phone on Sprint's network? Seems like it would be risky considering I don't have any backups of the firmware, since there are modem changes and whatnot Unless the factory reset retains root/TWRP? I just wanted to touch base with people on this before I attempt it.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this phone?
Perhaps a Dev would be willing to use an exploit to gain root to unblock the OEM unlock feature. Here is a link to a zero-day found not too long ago.

Thanks for the information and I appreciate the response.
Just for anyone who (is probably not) interested... I am returning the phone and ordering it directly from OnePlus. I'm going to switch my service to T-Mobile and take my phone there. OnePlus supports the modding community, but Sprint disabling any ability to mod is a bit frustrating to me. I'm tired of being tethered with CDMA too. So I'm going to go an easier route. Besides, I'm sure the extra RAM will be nicer than the 5G anyhow.

Yeah, I'm keeping mine. I've been in this boat before with other phones that I have had from Sprint and XDA has always come through. Once the phone has a wider release I'm HOPING it will get a bit more support here. Hell, I'll be a guinea pig since I now have insurance on the phone.

I've never been a fan of insurance for phones, but now that they offer screen replacement for $29, and this phone being damn near ALL screen, I went for it. And I may get around to testing the method I suggested earlier. I may have to do some stuff in Linux.

Anyone tried a Sim unlock yet? That was the way around the 7 Pro and 6T on T-Mobile network. Once sim unlocked you could enable OEM unlock.

I would love to know if anyone has had success unlocking the bootloader on Sprint? Or if one of our amazing devs is working on something for us. I have no issue donating for their time and work.
I'm on the same phone, it also includes a single sim tray so I just ordered a dual one to see if it works.
Did some testing of the 5G yesterday and the Sprint network is a joke.

What type of speeds were you getting? I know it's not as fast as Verizon 5G but should have better penetration.
I am a little hesitant to try flashing the other 5G OPS to my Phone. I don't have a backup device atm... Although, if I could get my hands on the Firehose for our device, I would have to option to backup and restore partitions. Or, if we could get our hands on the OPS for the Sprint OP7.
