OEM skin/software - Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Real Life Review

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.

Stock Android is love

Stoke Android is life

i hate stock android look

It's my first time using stock android. Missing some customisations from my previous phone.
But it's just been 2 days with the phone. I'd rather be open to the change. So far the performance of the device is good.

i purchased this phone for specifications have not used stock android feeling boring wating for twrp and custom roms i would love if some give dots os for it very nice rom using in my redmi note 4

stock android is good for performance. but for appearance and skin is boring

If you don't like the stock android experience just use a launcher to change the look.

I don't like how the icon selection forces us to use 4 shapes that isn't compatible with all apps. Like if Circle is selected, some apps will have their icons encircled if it's not round by a bit while if we choose Square, the naturally round icons will look weird.
Then there's the wallpaper selection and settings. Not really great when you want to use a wide or square type of image for the two-three home scroll-able pages and not being able to select which one should be the home button. 3rd party apps have a hard time to apply the wallpaper due to the strictly stock settings.
Then there's the UI font size which affects the notifications tab and the hiding of the notch display.

I'd love MIUI on Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2. Ofcourse a stable port based on stable release of original Miui.

Why would custom roms have ads?
Even custom roms on official miui roms don't have ads.

Well not everybody likes substratum , theme engine of miui is better than substratum
Zen ui may had been laggy or buggy but trying it out would be great and through constant updates that problem too can be resolved
More over stock android kind of skip out on customisation and features

Stock is lob I'll gibb it 10 out 10
No question in that....

Why I will never upgrade to the Note 5

The Note 5 will never have AOSP because Samsung isnt releasing the Exynos code. So you'll always be doomed to slow touchwiz.
Note 5 going through the recent tabs, stuttering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33pqdsdEqqc&feature=youtu.be&t=31
Note 4 on Marshmellow/CM13, going through the recent tabs, damn fluently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMFGahR-Nr8
That's how Touchwiz ruins beautiful hardware. Who cares about benchmarks, it's all about user experience. And that just s*cks with Touchwiz.

Really doubt the Note 5 performs that bad considering I get none of that (recent apps) lag on my n910c running touchwiz.

Just put it at 60 hz because that's your screens refresh rate (otherwise it will introduce recording stuttering). Thanks !

It takes literally only a few minutes of your time.

In which ways are the apps laggy? (edit: noticed you said themes so ignore this) Cannot say I notice any "lag" apart from the occasional stutter on my n910c (wanamlite's rom and googy_anas' 2.0 kernel (default settings (gentle_fair_sleepers off))). Have you checked the Profile GPU rendering graphs? I usually see stutters in most apps when loading content in the background when scrolling, but should be pretty smooth (60fps) almost 99% of the time. No wonder the scrolling is so slow on iOS.

The screen recording app makes the phone stutter like crazy so I cannot shoot a video that would show off how smooth it really is. Maybe that's why the note 5 appears to lag in the video? I can use an external camera to shoot me scrolling through my opened apps, but wouldn't want to bother. But if you require proof I'll be happy to provide it.

that's why they keep losing every year ...
not like S3 when it came everone loved samsung

I'm using n910c there is no lag what so ever.
Once you have used the Note 5 for awhile & go back to the Note 4 it does feel antiquated both software & hardware.
Don't get me wrong I have note 4 N910C & it's great but to use, feel & look at the Note 5 has it beat.
SD card aside, I never changed batteries, get the Note 5 & you won't want to go back.
Have the Note 4 and went looking for a Note 5 64. Couldn't find one and I wasn't going to be stuck with 32.
I got the S6 edge+
The Note is an excellent phone. However, the more I pick up and put down the edge+ the more I understand how wide the gap is with the illusion of quality.
The edge is a beautiful phone, and feels really special in the hand. The Note 4 is more comfortable to hold and use. I carry them both, and mostly reach for the Note to do anything worky. It's just more reliable. And the removable battery and expandable memory makes is a lot more useful.
I find myself reaching for the edge more and more. It's smooth, it's beautiful, there's something there that's not um tangible. I'm beginning to make excuses to use it - I feel far more special afterward than I do with the Note.
I can see how, if one had the 5, it would be difficult to reach for the 4.
The materials actually DO change completely, how you relate to the phone.
The thing is - the Note 4 remains far more functional, far more reliable, far more efficient, and itself, is beautifully constructed.
Where the edge is sophisticated, the Note has class.
Does that make sense?

Are you kidding me? This is a nexus.
It's a Nexus. The "skin"(such an inaccurate term), or really the lack of one, is the main selling point of the phone.
This thread is funny... to call stock Android a "skin" smh.... I do not think I would trust a reviewer who calls stock android a skin..

But some stock app is boring. Like Messenger, I need to insert receiver before input text. HTC Messenger allow me to type text, save draft without receiver.
Also, I don't like stock icon in Nokia 5 )
I havent texted in years and you can always download nova plus some icon pack
My point is that there a few phones without skins.

Beautiful stock android. I use nova launcher that makes the homescreen a little more snappier and prettier.
Unmodified Android is one of the biggest reasons why I bought this phone, it's not a great performing phone, but the software is very clean.
Pure Android, and using it with Xperia Home and Nova prime with custom icon pack for the home screen. Cause the stock launcher isn't very customisable and the stock launcher's dock is taking too much space in the display
Sime annoyances in the UI like having to scroll all the way to the to to clear all apps. Some more themeing would be nice too. otherwise stock ftw

TBH miui is getting boring, and there are many time when I am unable to find some settings I have to relay more on search option
I have purchased this for a family member of mine. Presently I am using it for a day or two for testing to see if everything is working fine within the return window.
MiUi is out right intolerable for me who loves custom ROM and using Z2 Plus (SD820/4GB).
But I kind of appreciate Xiaomi for their update commitment for their devices running MiUi.
UI is good enough for some one who is a completely non technical person.
Battery backup is excellent, so are their overall tuning. Yes there are some issues but their update cycle is dependable to get continued update for fixing any such.
But there are complaints, even from those users.
UX look and feel issue (China Factor)
How on earth MiUi Dev's think everyone likes Chinese bubbly design language?
Look at Oppo, they are Chinese to start with but Oxygen OS is getting so much love from rest of the world. Look at Samsung with their UI. So much different from stock android but loved around the world.
Can't they have a different UI which rest of the world will like?
Complicated Navigation
MiUi is getting complicated with its settings layout. Things are embedded so deep, it's problematic for non technical users for find their way around.
Getting Old and Boring
Once again another complain I am hearing from non technical user of MiUi. New device doesn't give new feeling anymore since the UI is kept same for half a decade now.
Similar issue what non technical users are reporting.
Like for example, my family member who would be using this device refused to upgrade from Samsung On8 (J7) to this year's On8 (J8) since everything looked same. Even though underneath, it's a completely different device.
Ads and privacy issues
Yeah they recover their cost from ads but it's utterly objectionable when they are showing adult ads without any specific option to toggle or filter such ads.
Lastly why do they need so much permission for ads? Our privacy too matters.. You really don't need so much personal information for showing ads.
No notch Support for MiUi
MiUi isn't yet notch compatible. Simply it's a cut in display. Nothing else. Notifications bar needs to optimised for this Notch. But judging from their MiUi agresive update cycle, hopefully we can have a better notch management.
Thanks.
3 starts. There's no 4K 30 FPS or Full HD 60 FPS recording option, and I know the sensor is capable of it.

USA Version.. No Global Dark Mode? No Gesture Navigation? No Theme Engine?

Just got my USA (Global) version RM3. It appears DARK mode is borked. If I change to dark mode in the settings, the settings menu stays bright white. Disappointing.
Also, there doesn't appear to be any way to change the 3 button navigation bar whatsoever! No reordering the buttons, no hiding the navigation bar, and NO GESTURE NAVIGATION! WTH? This is Android Pie. Why did Nubia remove this option? Apparently gesture navigation IS available on the Chinese model of this phone. Hugely disappointing.
Lastly, no way to theme the phone is disappointing, but not a deal breaker at all.
Here's a video of the Chinese Rom. Look at 5:50 in the video. The settings menu is in dark mode and completely different! Also notice that the stock home screen of the launcher has a nice theme with custom icons that are not present in the Global version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRucqyT7DDQ
Hi,
Yes, you're doing the same experience than a large number of other early adopters.
About the Gestures : it is indeed really surprising that this feature has been removes as it is a real function in Android 9. However, this is really simple to circumvent and in a really easy and covnenient manner. Just install Fluid N.G.n enable it with ADB and configure to your likings => there you go, gestures as you want them
The absence of Theming is indeed quite annoying. But even more annoying is the "Dark Mode" not functionning. I still rather have a function that is not present than one that appears and does not work. I have good hope that an update will solvez the problem.
But of course what you're saying here is just the most visible part...
Is there a way to have Always On Display, which is a feature that is a must have on AMOLED ? Not that I have seen...
Is there a way to sync with the simple touch of a Quick Setting tile ? Not that I have seen...
Is there a way to set the display heu/saturation and the refresh rate ? Not that I have seen, unless in Game mode where you can set the refresh rate but obviously only at gaming...
This is a really nice device, but it is so far plagued with a B.A.D. software.
But as it has been released really recently, there is still hope that some software updates might solve these problems.
Regards.

Hi,
I can't say.
There's no way to measure that...
I would guess 60Hz in non gaming mode, and maybe 90Hz if in Gaming mode.
But that is just a guess and I'd like to be proven otherwise.
Software on this toy is really poor

Hi,
Thanks... I know that.
But the setting is for the gaming mode is it not ?
So the question is still the same : if I set the refresh rate to 90hz in the gaming settings, does this affect the refresh rate in gaming mode only or for all uses ?
Regards.
The screen prob stays at 90hz all the time, most games tho won't go any higher then 60fps so the 90hz is mostly beneficial in the menu's and website scrolling.
Pubg runs at around 60fps and fortnite at around 30fps, there are some other games tho that support a higher refresh rate.

I follow MANY tech YouTubers. None of them were able to successfully install Google apps or services onto the Chinese variant of this phone. I suspect that's why the USA/GLOBAL version of the phone has a much more vanilla android skin than the Chinese version which is heavily modified.
The Chinese rom isnt heavily modified, yes it contains more features then the global rom but its still very stock like.
Google services is working perfectly on my Chinese rom btw, no problem installing huge apps etcetera.

Is there a way we can install chinese rom on global devices? Installing gapps is no problem as chinese rom going to get faster updates and its filled with features. Global rom is just a stock skin no feature inside it

Your Chinese variant only comes with 6GB of Ram? That sucks. Looks like the global models comes with 8GB minimum.

Like you would ever use more then 4gb of ram with an app on Android
More ram is a profit point for company's and doesnt give more performance to the user, unless you enjoy switching between 20+ programs all the time.

I'll happily take more ram over less any day.
Do you have any Google sync/notification issues on the Chinese ROM? Also, can you cross flash ROMs from the Global->Chinese and vice versa?
